Hilltop Perk New York Reviews
Unassuming but perfect and beautiful - from basic grocery needs to LOADING UP on gyros and infinite buffet at lunchtime, this is a jack-of-all-trades of delis, and I find it to be delicious and great value. Be careful loading up on the pay-by-weight lunch buffet, or $16 of spending on a mountain of food might quickly be converted into 16 hours of slumber to gestate the resulting food baby!

its so convenient, sandwiches are delicious and they have so many things to get and always great service!!!
I’ve been to Hilltop Perk (deli & grocery) a couple of times now, each time to grab a bite for lunch. With each visit, I’ve had good experiences!! They make a delicious Turkey Club Sandwich, and the staff have always been kind + helpful when I’ve visited.

I had both a Rueben and a Cuban sandwiches from here. Both were very tasty, classically made. Staff pleasant, typical deli setup. Prices were good. Recommended.
Nice grocery store located near the Columbia Medical Campus. Its convenient for the locals living nearby. You can find the basic essential items that are needed. It is a little over priced but thats a trade off for the convenience they offer. The staff is very friendly and courteous.
Disclaimer, Im a slightly picky eater, but I'm not a huge fan of the place. I went in around noon hoping to get something from the buffet but it wasn't up and running and, as far as I'm aware, they don't have a website to explain why. I got a turkey wrap with avocado, lettuce, and Chipotle mayo instead and it was 95% turkey. Some people might prefer a lot of meat but if that's the case they can always ask for extra, for me it was way too much. I also got a bagel with scallion cream cheese since I figured I might not like the wrap and it was meh: really fresh scallions in cream cheese on bagel-shaped bread. However the staff are really kind and I had a nice conversation with the guy preparing my sandwich.

Convenient and overall a good experience. Had some difficulty with food order: didn't add fries to order of platter and when brought it up, said they ran out but did not inform me. Seemed more like an issue with the server so may be one off issue.

Food is good. But given that majority of customers are students, it would be thoughtful if they had student discounts. A plate of food being >$15 is annoying and everything in general is on expensive side.
2025 edit: They were recently forced to close by the city. They have reopened but they have also raised their prices. Before closing Ben and Jerry's pints were $7.50, which was ridiculous, but after reopening they are $8.50! Good lord. Original 2023 review: Very convenient but a little pricey. On par for being near the hospital and Columbia Medical School. They make a mean sausage, egg and cheese!
I come here pretty often and the food is pretty good but expensive. I don’t know what’s going on in the front door but there’s a disgusting smell when you come in that has me wondering if I should be eating there. Smells like a chicken coop mixed with garbage.
The first time I came here it was ok, just overpriced. The other day I ordered a gyro and it was the most pathetic one I've ever seen. Maybe 6 or 7 skinny, clearly frozen slices of gyro meat and then a lot of lettuce.

Good soda but hair in my food. And no it’s not mine I have braids in right now and my natural hair is curly while this one is straight.

Terrible grocery store, got a gallon of milk and when I opened it it was completely sour and bad. A separate time, got a gallon of milk and two protein bars and they charged $27. Pretty sure they were trying to scam me because they don’t have a barcode scanner, they just type in a price into a credit card reader and expect you to go with it. A very dishonest and low quality shop, won’t be back here!
Gal of water is $4.25….. smells of mold when you enter as well. Closes early and opens late. “Last resort” place for sure. Just go to broadway instead
Would love to visit more often as it's super close. I went in Saturday, and the clerk was so high that she couldn't function. Took 15 minutes to pour a lukewarm coffee, dropped a gallon of milk on the floor, and couldn't use the computer. I put the rest of my purchases back. When I got outside, the milk was curdled; chunks in the coffee, I dumped it out. I couldn't bear walking back in and dealing with her again. Do better.
Decided to grab a sandwich instead of making dinner. Long week, lazy girl. While waiting for deli person to finish my 🥪. A mid-sized rat 🐀 scurried outcome behind the cashier area to under one one over beverage refrigerators. Take out and ran.
Something weird is happening here with their pricing. I have paid 5 different prices for the same item over the course of a month, sometimes more, sometimes less. Don't buy things without an advertised price or you might get grifted. Edit: They posted prices on some items since my original review, but refuse to honor the advertised prices once you get to the register and try to charge you twice as much. Scam sales tactics, go elsewhere when possible.
significant markup for grocery price. half gal milk for 6.50 - do yourself a favor just walk to key foods or any other nearby grocery store for regular items. this is not ok. funny enough on the outside of the fridge it says 3.50 for that milk. scamming students money is how they stay open
Yes, the buffet may be good. But for a 'convenience store' this is most inconvenient. They NEVER open on time in the morning...you never know when it will open. If you need an early coffee, milk, a can of cat food, etc you'll have to walk to Broadway like I did this morning. They disconnected their phone so you can't even call.
The ‘female’’ at the register is horrific. She was rude and had broom sticks for eyelashes. Her demeanor was disgusting very disrespectful and have absolutely no sense of customer service. I asked the young lady if l was suppose to hold all the products l purchased in my hands her reply , This is not my business, you need to ask for a bag. Really l need to ask for a bag after spending money. What type of people hilltop deli is hiring? She’s at the register the first person one sees when entering and the last when exiting the place of business. Sorry, not a good representative.
