Java Girl New York Reviews
Cutest little coffe shop. Very nice decor. Like a french coffee shop. Good service. Tasty coffee and croissants.
The best coffee I ever had. We are buying coffee only here from now on. Also service is good and people are nice.
This is a great little off-the-beaten-path coffee shop where they are really into their craft. Great ambiance for two or three people to meet up.
Great coffee, good spot to read, wonderful to people watch in the summer, owners are wonderful, cash only. New York could use more places like this
Amazing coffee place that once you get it, you don’t want to leave again! Great coffee, tea, pastries, sandwiches, juice, etc!
As a visitor to the city I always search out places that make me feel welcome and 'at home'. . JAVA GIRL is that place. I always look forward to being there. It's a great way to start the day!
A charming place to take a break from your busy schedule. Good service, robust java and tasty goods. The late Mr. Miyagi loved it and Jigen was a regular too.
If you would declare yourself a coffee / espresso aficionado then you simply must come meet the lovely ladies at Java Girl. Boasting a bustling homey-feeling location, friendly staff and owner who will remember you and never fail to greet you with a warm smile or even a hug, Java Girl is sure to never disappoint.
What coffee shop dreams are made of! Places to sit. Breakfast, lunch and snacks. Coffee everywhere. The best lattes I’ve ever had!
Cozy ambient with great service. They have a good selection of coffee beans and to go options. The Bourbon flavored Latte was a treat!
Best coffee in NYC. I walk from my apartment about a mile away passing all the other coffee places on the way. Nice ambiance inside and outdoor seating as well. Prices are very reasonable .
Best neighborhood coffee shop in the UES. The staff are warm, friendly and welcoming, and the coffee/coffee selection is great! My favorite is the coconut almond, with the “Georgie” being a close second.
I always go for regular. The coffee is unlike any other coffee I have had anywhere. Just love the rich and deep taste. Wherever they get the beans from, its the best!
Place serves delicious coffee and pastry Sweet and calming music perfect for an afternoon break. People are working on just on their phones even though the place is cosy and tabled are close to each other.
A unique place like a hidden gem Charming atmosphere and decoration Very lovely❤️and friendly owner Best coffee If you want to buy very different and unique small gifts, you can find them here I highly recommend🌺
Go there almost everyday. Love the dark coffee, Linda and her staff are the most friendly people on the planet. The interior is classic, coffee chic ..
Thus is worth a visit if you're a tourist in the city. It's our go-to place for coffee, with a large selection of roasted beans and teas. Small seating area.
Cozy little Cafe with nice service and good coffee. Usually you can get a seat in their cute seating area. Nice place for a catch up with a friend.
A Whitmanesque barbaric yawp in the face of the Strabucksification of coffee. Great coffee in a cozy setting that could be in a small New England town right in NYC. They also offer their Java Girl house blend for home brew. FYI, let them grind it for you.
Cozy, cute cafe. Excellent coffee and fun space. They even sell their own beans. I highly recommend coming here
Really cute, warm place at a decent price point especially compared to the surrounding area. The coffee and croissant were both really good and I'd go back for sure.
Good quality espresso and brewed coffee. Unique atmosphere, coffee beans and loose tea available for sale.
The turmeric latte was fantastic even on a hot summer day! Very cute atmosphere, good for thinking and reading and writing. They have a no cell phone conversation policy and no outlets that I noticed near indoor seating so it’s a very peaceful environment. Highly recommend!
One of my favorite coffee shops in the upper east side. Staff are super friendly and kind. The coffee is amazing! Pastry items are baked fresh every morning. Nice assortment of teas and other quick bites. Cute and charming little nook. I have been a customer for years and the service and quality is always consistent.
Locals love this cozy spot, so international travelers will be happy they read this review. The glorious smell of fresh burlap sacks of coffee beans from around the world and the aroma of the daily brews meet you as soon as you open the door. The owner is always there and her wonderful smile and artwork welcomes the weary traveler. If you love to enjoy coffee in a warm atmosphere, this place is worth a trip out of your way, but there is not enough room here to open up a laptop computer; if you want to do that or have a business meeting, go to Starbucks.
An intimate cafe with enough activity to be interesting without the forced bustle of the national chains. It's charm is enhanced by seasonal decor. The low key but pleasant staff serves up well prepared snacks and quality beverages at reasonable prices. The coffee and tea selection is extensive and well priced. They may not know everyone's name, but they sure treat you right.
My girl friend absolutely adores this place and for good reason. 90's style, good seating, friendly staff and good food/drink. I had a hot chocolate here in winter which was amazing and an iced coffee in summer which was good, not great. They sell cool cups and other things, fresh coffee beans as well cookies/pastries. Worth a stop if you want to support a local business and a must if you want to sit and drink/eat, the atmosphere is really the best.
Overall, FANTASTIC! Great coffee, attentive owner and staff, cozy and friendly. I have been going since 2000...my most favorite coffee cafe in NYC, an absolute must for your daily fix!
They make the best cappuccino that I’ve tried for now in New York, I can easily compare it to the Italian’s one. Also the pastries are prelibate, I ate the croissant with chocolate (it actually was more similar to a “pain au chocolat”), the croissant dough was light, buttery and with many layers like the European ones, Loved it. Very cozy atmosphere, it’s little but if you can find a spot you can enjoy a really relaxing breakfast with an chilly ambient music!
One of my favorite cafes of all time. Their almond croissant is out of this world! They also have a distinctive taste to their coffee which I really liked as a latte.
Ambience: Quiet and quaint coffee shop with small tables, mismatched chairs, and woody decor. No wi-fi, and there's a sign requesting that phone calls be taken outside, leaving the atmosphere nice and slow. Coffee: Their self-serve coffee is very good, with two regular options (French/strong and a varietal roast), decaf, and a flavored. Don't know how often they brew the regulars, but they always tastes fresh and robust. Prices (for coffee) are very reasonable - $2.20 for a large.
Super cute neighborhood coffee shop with genuinely good coffee, a variety of fresh pastries, snacks and packed small bites like almond biscotti and chicken salad etc. Can’t get over how rare it is to find a simple coffee shop like this. They have such a loyal following.. rain or shine; there’s always a line to get in during rush hour and I’m so glad they survived the pandemic
Great little coffee place that is a welcome respite from the ubiquitous Starbucks. Solidly good coffee and tea, artsy decor, sit as long as you like policy, great place to have a conversation or an informal meeting as many from nearby Cornell or Sloan Kettering do.
My go-to coffee shop: On my way to work in the morning, on Saturdays and Sundays to get reading or writing done, to pick up delicious ground coffee to brew at home or at the office, or to pick up unique gifts for friends and family. The owner and staff are extremely friendly and they make an effort to get to know their loyal customers– of which they have many! It is your quintessential neighborhood coffee shop and the Upper East Side is lucky to have it. Wide selection of coffees and loose leaf teas, fresh pastries, handmade sandwiches, healthy and often vegan and/or organic homemade soups and salads.
Excellent local coffee shop with knowledgeable and friendly owner and top notch drip coffee and espresso. It has a nice little seating area both inside and outside to enjoy your morning cup of coffee. This is some of the best coffee in the neighborhood.
It was my favourite spot in NY. Coffee and pastries are just amazing. The atmosphere is relax as well. A perfect spot tp enjoy your coffee. Moreover the owners are super friendly and you can see they trest the customers like friends/family. I would definetely suggest to go to grab a coffee:)!
This place is super cute, feels like you're in a new England style general store with wooden floors, benches, and homestyle furniture. Seating is limited to 7-2 person tables, plus a couple seats outside. Ambient music and lots of people working on computers make for a quiet atmosphere. Will definitely be coming back here.
Beloved upper east side cafe has been serving the hospital district for more than 20 years. Strong coffee, attentive staff, and cozy places to sit and chat including sidewalk seating in the warm months. This is not a place to work on your computer all day (go to Starbucks!) but to meet an actual human being for coffee. Java Girl also does a brisk takeout business. Large variety of coffee beans for sale and a welll curated gift section that is the place to go for Valentine's day and Christmas gifts.
Java Girl was the girl I knew best from yesteryear. She had a cash end dash reputation for all the broken hearted boys she left behind. Fortunately for me, I didn't date her. I was her best friend. My dear friend Meredith taught me her subtle ways with coconuts and my personal favorite, a beanbag of oatmeal cookie. A ribbony morning's caress of tiramisu and red velvet cake occasionally passed across my breakfast dish as well. This divine place miraculously butters your heart with soul as its majestic brews defeat all parameters of time in a humanity that over seeks its welcome within time. Enjoy your space in place.
I wish I had taken pics but you can see others. Super cute and peaceful just to enjoy a cup of Joe. The whole place is warm and the smells envelope you. Bring a book and leave your phone on vibrate.
My favorite coffee place on the upper east side. Warm cozy nook for sitting. Friendly baristas. Decent food. On a sunny day there’s a great coterie of older patrons sitting outdoors that’s like a slice of Rome.
Java Girl is a lovely little spot - delicious coffee (great range of filter options!) and a perfect vibe for chilling.
Absolutely the best coffee shop in NYC..you get treated like family, Linda during my cancer journey you have been such a beautiful light in all this darkness. I am so blessed to have you and your beautiful shop to decompress and forget about cancer for a little with my family until we need to walk up the street, can't wait to see you when I come back home in September...God bless you and I have my Angel and blessed stone next to my bed....
TLDR: Java Girl is a charming, quiet coffee spot on the Upper East Side with excellent specialty drinks, friendly service, and a cozy atmosphere. Perfect for a quick coffee break, though limited seating makes extended stays challenging. This hidden gem on E 66th Street delivers a delightful coffee experience with personality. Their specialty drinks shine, particularly the Toasted Marshmallow latte, which offers a perfect balance of sweetness and coffee flavor. The Cafe Mocha maintains high standards with rich, well-balanced taste. At $6-8 including tip, the prices are reasonable for quality NYC coffee. Atmosphere & Space The cafe's charm lies in its intentionally quiet, intimate setting. The "Take your phone calls outside" sign sets the tone for a peaceful environment, enhanced by well-chosen background music and the comforting aroma of coffee beans. While some customers manage to work or study, the limited seating makes it better suited for quick visits. Service Quality The staff strikes the perfect balance of friendly efficiency, making the experience pleasant whether you're staying or grabbing to go. Quick service and genuine warmth from the baristas add to the neighborhood coffee shop feel. Java Girl excels at being exactly what it aims to be - a cozy, local coffee spot that prioritizes quality drinks and peaceful ambiance. While not ideal for long working sessions due to space constraints, it's perfect for morning coffee runs or brief planning stops. The combination of skilled baristas, quality drinks, and thoughtful atmosphere makes it a standout in the neighborhood coffee scene.
Always love to support a stand alone love coffee shop...and Java Girl does not disappoint. BEST COFFEE...and I like coffee with cream but HERE I can even drink the coffee black...it is so delicious. THANKS for being such a long standing neighborhood place!
I’ve been coming here for years and years and it never disappoints. Delicious coffee, pastries, chicken and tuna salad. Arty gift items - love the T shirts. Friendly staff. Just a very cozy unpretentious place for take-out or to relax and read while listening to an excellent soundtrack. Bravo.
Not only does Linda have the best coffee in the hood, but her shop also boasts a unique atmosphere that transcends the city bustle. Stepping inside feels like entering an oasis. Warm, soft lighting illuminates the space, showcasing decorative rustic furniture adorned with unique ornaments. Gift items, Linda's unique designs, line shelves, tempting you to browse while you sip your coffee. A gallery of polaroid pictures adorns the wall, snapshots of neighborhood history. Additionally Java provides a truly exceptional social scene for the neighborhood. I've met some amazing people here over the years.
Love Java Girl. And will go out of my way, the coffee is excellent, but the ambience is awesome as well. That home style feel, a cozy throw back to the days before chain coffee shops. Love the coffee barrels and ability to buy house coffee beans. Great touch. Love the chairs, bench, outside when the weather is warmer.
Java Girl is my favorite coffee shop in all of NYC! I'm always there and love the environment and staff. Always a great experience (+ amazing Apple Pie Lattes).
JavaGirl is and has been my most favorite coffee and tea cafe in NYC, anywhere. I'm a coffee lover, tried many all over the US and beyond, but JavaGirl and the shops atmosphere is just wonderful. Great coffee, at a great price, friendly staff and true welcoming cafe experience! Can't wait until my next visit!
A gem on the upper east! Wonderful selection of coffee and roasts- I always pick up a new bag for my at home set up. Their pastry selection is always delightful and the staff are so kind and easy to chat with (they also have great recommendations)! The cafe is adorned with such amazing decor- so unique compared to the corporate chains all over the city.
Honestly, I love the place and I definitely love the workers that work here. I got an Apple caramel iced latte, I already thought the drink was pretty well made. When I was going to add some sugar on the side, the barista told me that it was a while since she made the drink and that she forgot to add some apple syrup, as there’s already hints of apple in the bean roast, and asked if she could add it to the drink. It caught me off guard, i really didn’t notice the lack of apple in the drink, I thought it was a really sweet gesture. Definitely will come back for another coffee
More than just caffeine, Java Girl offers a daily pause. It's a stolen breath in the relentless rhythm of New York. A place to watch the city blur by outside the window, while you are held, momentarily, in this small, warm pocket of quiet. Thank you, Java Girl, for the gentle art of brewing not just coffee, but moments of grace in a frantic world. A story unfolds in each cup, rich and dark and quietly golden.
Best Blueberry muffin that happens to be multigrain. It is moist and does not crumble. I was asked to test the Gregory blueberry muffin compated to Java Girl multigrain muffin. The Gregory muffin is “good” but does not compare to Java Girl muffins that has the blueberry taste throughout the muffin not around the blueberries and in the center you get a wonderful surprise. I already love this place for the atmosphere, friendly vibe and great variety of quality coffee.
A nice and cozy coffee shop. The coffee quality is pretty good and the pastries I had were fresh and delicious. This reminded me of many neighborhood coffee shops that are all over the place in Seattle/Portland great for spending a raining afternoon with your laptop working out of office enjoying good coffee. I definitely didn't expect to find such a place on the Upper East Side. I highly recommend it (especially if you are looking for a place to camp for a bit and enjoy the moment)
The cafe and staff are really nice, and the staff was very polite and patient. They made our drinks very well, and they also had a lot of teas and coffees to order off-menu. They do have a sign that asls for phone conversations to be taken outside so as not to disturb the other patrons, which was nice. They also have a shop inside with some locally made gifts, and mugs, which was really cute.
Adorable place for a quick drink or to stop and read a while. Highly recommend their iced coffee or dirty chai tea. Salads and pastries are great.
I really like Java Girl, it's quaint, cozy and has a selection of tea, coffee related gifts. It's a very cute place. I've been a customer for 10 yrs.
On the expensive side for decent coffee, but wow talk about nostalgic. This place makes me feel like I walked into the blooming coffee shop scene from the 90s. One word -- cozy. Planning on this being my new local spot.
Very cozy and pleasant place. The baked products are tasty. Coffee is not that great but better than average in NY...
Quaint & Quiet neighborhood coffee shop with phenomenally delicious coffee. It's a quick grab-and-go stop with a traditional coffee menu with some bonus signature lattes. The baristas know how to make a fantastic latte, but I asked for a recommendation between two of the signatures and was met with uninterested energy. I went with the Reeses Peanut Butter Latte and I was not disappointed! It was FANTASTIC - the mocha chocolatey notes were in perfect balance with its nuttiness. I wish I would have ordered two! I am from out of town, but when I return to Lenox Hill I will be a repeat customer!
The place looks nice and cozy ngl, smells amazingly because of the coffee however the pastries are disappointing, the croissant was flat, not crunchy, top greasy but not buttery good, if you know about croissants then you know what I am talking about.
With such great reviews, I guess I had high expectations but coffee was mediocre. I ordered a mocha but there was no mocha flavor in it and tasted like light coffee with an aftertaste rather than espresso. Pretty disappointed. Won't be coming back.
Small place and no WiFi. Java and no Internet, not my cup of tea unless you are serving some serious java and I didn't get that feeling when sipping. Thanks anyway. It's good if you live on East 66th and your walking to the subway or bus. Wouldn't go too far out of my way for this one.
I regularly went to Java girl on my way to work at Rockefeller for about 8 months for their delicious and generous espresso shots (not that this place is practically cash only). Despite the great coffee and cozy fun atmosphere, I stopped going because of unfriendly service not once, but many times. The general aloofness was consistent enough that I eventually felt uncomfortable being a regular patron despite the fact that the store seems very neighborly and off the beaten path. Maybe I wasn't as frequent a customer as I thought? Anyway, the coffee is good so I'd still give it 3 stars.
Coffee is decent, but the layout is cramped and the place is chock full of frufru items for sale. Good for grandmothers with a ton of time and disposable income.
The best part about this place is the ambience and it caters to that 90’s “You’ve Got Mail” dot com NYC coffee shop girl. The design of the space is sublime, with cozy reading nooks and whimsical merchandise like coffee mugs decorated with Steve Madden-esque shoes and kitschy kittens. The baristas are always nice. The downside is, the coffee isn’t great. Maybe the other flavors that they display in proud barrels are tastier, but everytime I’ve ordered coffee or a cappuccino to go, I have been disappointed. When it comes to food, options are limited. They have a small selection of pastries and granola bars, but not many substantial food options. Additionally, there are old, creepy men that sometimes lurk outside and attempt to chat up the young women that come in and are trying to mind their business. This isn’t the shop’s fault, but it does kill the vibe.
Completely pretentious. They act like they are the be all and end all of coffee, and is its not even that good! They used to have wifi, stopped, and now they straight up lie that they never had it . It's too bad it's such a nice spot.
This place was just what I was looking for on my Saturday morning, local coffee shop instead of the usual chain. They made me a fantastic double latte which would help me with an early start. As I was having one pure moment of happiness sipping this latte and enjoying my favorite breakfast carbs that I try to save for the weekend (Dunkin Doughnut's White Cheddar Bagel Twist), the woman working behind the counter approached me from behind and said I could not eat that here since they sell their own pastries. As a customer who was having a good experience, my morning was disturbed by her attitude as she said it and perhaps lack of customer service sensitivity that I have experience in (working as a in international flight attendant for 4 years working with all types of customers). Perhaps next time, she could let a customer who did not know this policy with an "I know you did not know, but next time, please be aware." I probably will not return to this small cafe since I like to sip my first morning coffee in peace.
The coffee is burnt, the service is rude, and the prices are high. The scone I had was ok, but there was mold growing on one of the yogurts in the refrigerator case. To be avoided unless you like pretentious people talking loudly on their phones, obnoxious baristas, mediocre coffee, and dodgy food.
The ambience is all this place has going for it. The coffee is watery and slightly burned. Also, the cookies come from a Tate's package, that they refill their jar with and call it their own. 2 stars for the decor and public restroom.
Staff is super nice and the place is very quaint. The coffee tastes like your grandma, though. Not your grandma's coffee, but your actual grandma.
I’ve been going here on and off since 2004 and after all these years the owners still get nervous when I walk in the door. I stopped by recently because I broke my mug and the female shopkeeper was up front and I soon as I walked in the man walked out from the back and said what do you want?
My first time back at Java Girl since before COVID, back when I actually lived in the neighborhood. The place is still cozy with that slightly bohemian vibe. The coffee is somehow more atrocious than I remember (an impressive feat, honestly). The almond croissant was dry enough to file paperwork with. I do appreciate the “no phone calls” rule. Very civilized. But for the love of God, get a bathroom. If laptops are welcome, bathrooms should be too.
cute aesthetically but the workers were cold and rude particularly the more elderly woman that works there- also I find it weird that they only put one shot of espresso in a latte. Felt like I was drinking milk.
While looking for a local coffee shop with good coffee, I stumbled upon Java Girl. Looked it up, had great reviews, and lots of bean variety. Decided to give it a try. Was greeted by a very friendly member of the staff. Ordered 1 plain croissant and 1 small latte with oat milk. This being my first time, I was not directed to grab my own croissant, which turns out was a self service station, so waiting for it was a bit awkward when a small gesture towards it would have made things more clear. All good. When I received my latte, the milk was burnt, and there was no micro foam. Instead, the latte had huge bubbles and was not integrated into the espresso, making the entire top layer big foamy bubbles of just milk (like you’d find in a poorly made cappuccino). The espresso was extremely bitter as well. The latte stayed hot for so long, that I burned my tongue trying to sip it after 20 minutes and ultimately decided to throw it away. At this point, all the foam and milk have completely separated. Considering all Java Girl does is make coffee, I was hoping and excited for a great cup, but instead was left disappointed and feeling like I’ve wasted my money. On the bright side, the croissant was crisp and fresh and the vibes and aesthetic of the shop is cozy and homey. People working on their laptops, but there is a no cell phone/FaceTime conversations inside (understandable considering how small the space is. Don’t want to be rude to others). Seems like they get a good amount of regulars, and it’s a staple for the neighborhood. Wouldn’t recommend going out of your way for this place and think it’s worth it too walk a few extra blocks in search of better quality coffee, but it’s a nice chill stop if you’re out and about on the upper east side.
This was bizarre - coffee tasted weirdly burnt, and I bought a pound of coffee. The bag Coffee was over $20 - no reason it should be this expensive. The total (large iced coffee and bag of coffee) was $30.
Poor service. I was just in town to visit a friend in the neighborhood. I purchased a drink and a dessert while waiting for the friend to arrive. While I sat down to eat my food, the server asked me to move from a two-seating square table to a two-seating round table without any reasoning. I didn’t move, it was a ridiculous request.
Nice place but super deceptive and shady pricing . Small late with extra shot (two shots) was $7.25 but a large with two shots is $5.25.?? The honest route would be to let me know as I order as a courtesy. Instead, after charging me Daniel #1 thin gentleman, curly hair says it is what it is, you can email us on the website Daniel #2 dark hair, darker complexion says my bad , I didn’t make your drink, I’ll refund you. Dishonest barista vs honest barista .
Go there for their matchas usually & wanted to try their coffee today, wasn’t the best, I second the comment about it tasting like grandma (not grandmas coffee but grandma) & it’s overpriced! Would go for the matchas but not for the overpriced coffee and the attitudes I got from the baristas! Cafe has a nice vibe tho
This establishment boasts good coffee with barrels of beans laying around and the scent of tea and coffee lingering in the air. However, this is just a ruse, a masquerade to hide the cheap, deli, quality coffee that you will receive from dismissive workers who don’t know what they’re doing, who don’t know what they’re serving and who couldn’t care less that you are there. I once commented on the egregious price of their espresso and their workers simply agreed with me. When the “Java girl” isn’t there service drops significantly to the point that I would rather get a coffee from Starbucks.
Okay food, HORRIBLE service. I went in looking for a quick bite and a drink to get a break from the cold weather. Everything was mostly seamless until someone walked in, not seeming to speak English and asking for a hot chocolate, but coming up two dollars short. The older lady and younger guy seemed to debate it for a bit and ended up looking like they were not going to make the hot chocolate. I ended up asking if I could pay for it since I had just paid for my order earlier and even insisted it was okay, but the refused to take the money. It felt deeply prejudiced to not allow someone to pay for this particular person’s order and it’s fairly obvious why they denied taking the money for it. I wouldn’t advise anyone to support people like this.
