The Penny Farthing New York Reviews
Came in last night for dinner and drinks and had an amazing time! We sat at the bar; bar staff was so kind and accommodating! Recommended two of their specialty cocktails that were delicious. Food was great. Overall wonderful experience - will definitely be back!
This place is great for laid back night with friends for watching a game or for a cozy date night! The place is sectioned off very well, you have the option of being seated near the bar on communal style tables. They have booth seating for parties of 4 and 6 to the side and larger parties at the back. During the warmer months they also have sidewalk seating. All the tables are very comfortable and have cozy lighting. The food is delicious! I recommend the spinach and artichoke dip with freshly made tortilla chips. If you're a fan of grilled cheese, you can't go wrong with the tomato and Vermont cheddar grilled cheese on brioche - it's delicious. All their sandwiches come with a side of thick hand cut fries, I especially love their sweet potato fries. Their happy hour is similar to most east village taverns- half off cocktails, wines and beers. Drinks are pretty decent. The staff is friendly and are able to give good recommendations on drinks if you want to try something adventurous, the food and drinks are quick to be made and served. Overall, a fun place to spend a relaxing evening with friends.
Atmosphere is great. The deal for the happy hour is great. Had a burger combo only for $15. It’s very cozy to spend a night with friends and family. The food is delicious. And affordable.
Snuck into this place when I got caught in the rain and I’m so glad! Service was quick, friendly and polite. Claire behind the bar was great! Salmon was delicious and perfect temperature and her recommendation on a bread pudding dessert was on point. Also a huge lovely space with tons of delightful regulars! Definitely worth a visit.
$5 espresso martinis during happy hour!! This place is amazing!! So are the staff, our servers Grace, Sarah and Steph made sure we were satisfied throughout our meal. Couldn’t recommend a better Irish pub in New York!
Great seating and plenty of TVs to watch the playoffs. Good Vibrations was my drink of choice, shout-out to my waitress Bailey for recommending it to me! The service was great and the chicken tacos were delicious. It can get a little crowded in the evening but the service is never lacking even when it gets busy! Would definitely recommend this place to a friend
I had been going to this place for years and the food quality has never disappointed me. The purpose for me going there has been really during the retirement, someone leaving our group and or Christmas party. I had always ordered the chips and artichoke, Grill Salmon Burger with Fries. I would highly recommend visiting this place if you are in the area. They do take reservations online if you need it.
This place is AWESOME!!!! my friends and I went here last night and the food was so good and the staff are even nicer, they couldn't have been more accommodating as our group grew in size. The music is GREAT, the dj was so good and we pretty much danced all night. We can't wait to come back. Also pretty cute bartenders ;)
If you haven’t had their burger and tater tots, you’re missing out :)
I love it here 🥹! Great drinks, ambiance and amazing staff.
Almost a week ago now, I proposed to my girlfriend where we first met years ago, namely at The Penny Farthing (she said yes!). That (yes) notwithstanding, I couldn't have pulled off the proposal without the help of Penny's general manager and absolute angel, Hanna. She, along with her wonderful staff, made it a truly memorable experience for us. From the very beginning when I spoke to Hanna about my plan, her enthusiasm and excitement warmed my heart and provided me with relief, knowing that I had a welcome partner as part of my plan. She accommodated my every request, ensured that all went as planned, and paid attention to every detail, while also going above and beyond the call of duty. I cannot say enough about how wonderful Hanna was. I am truly indebted to her and thank her from the bottom of my heart. Go and enjoy the environs of Penny! Rest assured, knowing that there is a caring human soul looking out for you there.
Fantastic pub with great atmosphere and lovely bar staff. Super welcoming.
I recently hosted a party here for a friend's 50th birthday. The events manager Nikki who I liaised with via email was super accommodating and responsive. The party went without a hitch and everyone had a fantastic time. They all loved the food and drinks and the staff went above and beyond. A few of the guests were in wheelchairs and the Penny Farthing was spacious enough for them to move around with ease and has an accessible restroom close to the bar. There was a great atmosphere and I have no doubts we'll be back to celebrate again! As a side note- I have also been here on other occasions for lunch. The menu is well priced and the food is always very good. It's a nice relaxed atmosphere during the day too.
This is a fun, local place to eat, meet, and be inside or outside. From the moment you walk up, everyone is attentive and welcoming. It gets a bit louder on the weekends as everyone is going out. This is a very popular place for 20-30s on going out nights as well as for professionals meeting casually or having office parties. There are two sides. The main side is much more casual with two floors and dancing areas, ample seating at tables and at the bar. The other side is smaller and caters more to food service and is more calm and relaxed. It seems to be a better place for an intimate date or a meeting where a discussion will be had. The outside area is clean and airy with TVs to watch a game as well. The seats are all comfortable and wait staff are attentive to you inside or outside. It is very clean and orderly. I definitely recommend it for a welcome break anytime or for a night out with friends.
This place had such good music on Saturday night! We danced our hearts out. The bartender Thomas was so sweet and made us some good tequilas drinks. We will definitely be back!
Fun spot! The bartender was very friendly and she was on top of our service! I an for sure going be back here for drinks with friends again…
Great gathering place and good food at reasonable pricing. Highly recommend
Booked the Cellar Bar for a party and everything was amazing! Perfect, large space with your own bar, warm and accommodating staff, and great drinks. I will absolutely be booking future events here! Truly a gem.
Decent food depending on menu. Good service. Very noisy.
Upon entering, I was met with enthusiastic acknowledgement by Tara, a brilliant and cheerful bartender. She inquired about my friend and about work. Informing her that my friend would be joining us shortly, she instinctively asked to confirm our order: two bubbly waters and two glasses of Sauvignon Blanc. The pours were generous and the service personable and delightful throughout our stay. Would highly recommend!
I hosted my birthday party in their private room & it was amazing. Everyone was so kind and accommodating! They made hosting an event seamless & fun. I definitely recommend having your next event here!!!!!
First time I have been to Penny’s and it was one of the best experiences I’ve had in Toronto. Great vibe and great deals. The server Brooke was excellent. She recommended the best Buffalo Chicken Slider and a few different cocktails. Next time I go back I will request to get into her section again. 5 stars Guys. Well done.
Amazing customer service. We ordered few glasses of wine, chicken sandwich( it tasted so good! You can tell them If you want a different kind of bread),chicken tenders and then for dessert, we ordered chocolate lava cake. And let me tell you, when you are kinda tipsy, that amazing combination of gooey warm chocolate with ice cream is all you need!
Nice and relaxed atmosphere and very friendly staff. The bill wasn't dumped on our table while eating the last bite, so there was no rush or pressure to get us out the door asap. This is very much appreciated. Very good food, made with fresh ingredients and very reasonably priced. The homemade fries are delicious! Love the European style atmosphere and decoration.
Best bar in town. If you like tearing up a dance floor under a disco ball courtesy of a DJ who will play any request, head to the PF.
We really just love this place. We live in the area and have been eating here for probably 10 years or more and each time we are always amazed by how consistently delicious the food is! Such a welcoming vibe with friendly service. We have eaten plenty of burgers and their Penny Burger is the best! as are their fries! Whether you have a salad, salmon, steak, sandwich, burger, pancakes, French toast, Bloody Mary etc- they are all top quality and delicious!! Hands down our favorite place ❤️
I normally come to this place on a Sunday after a hang over. And it’s cures me every time not mention how welcoming the employees are. Not to mention this is one of the places I’ve had a better experience being brown. Furthermore the night life on a causal weekend is also worth the visit. I have to say this establish got it right. In love with Curry along with the fried chicken sandwich when’s fresh. I recommend anyone in the area try won’t be disappointed
Service is amazing. This is my go to spot for a drink and dinner near me in the east village. The servers are super nice, their steak salad is perfect (tho I ask for extra arugula to make it a proper salad) and their manhattans are well poured. They also have a great Monday burger special and a wed espresso martini special. Generally whenever I’m looking for a good spot to go to after a tough day, this is where I come
If you’re looking for a place for groups this is it! We recently celebrated my brother’s birthday here. It was a surprise party of 20+ people and was exactly what I was looking for. Nikki, Sarah, and Nicole were the Event Managers that I coordinated with beforehand. I submitted an event inquiry via email to their sister restaurant, Phebe’s, which was booked at that date and time. Fortunately for me, they offered me a slot at Penny Farthing! We had one of the high tops in the main bar area which was great for standing and individual tabs. I was able to preorder appetizers for the group as well. The food itself was very well priced for groups! They were super accommodating and wanted to make sure they had all the details ahead of time. Once I arrived, Hannah, the manager on duty, greeted me. I’m so grateful that Hannah was there! She wanted to make sure my brother had the best time so she had the staff sing and bring out sparklers for his birthday. The food was awesome - we had the Spinach Artichoke dip, Fries Medley, Chicken Tenders, and Beef Sliders. Everyone loved it all. When it came time for the bill, it was super easy to pay for the appetizers since everyone was able to order drinks individually at the bar. Thank you to Hannah and all the staff at Penny Farthing. We’ll definitely be back!
I was pleasantly surprised with my meal here! I had the double cheeseburger and it was pretty solid. I thought the portion size was good, the burger was pretty sizable. For dessert I split a chocolate lava cake and a cheesecake with my friend, and I was a fan of both. I do think I preferred the cheesecake, though. I regret not getting an appetizer, cause they looked pretty good. I think the best way to go at Penny Farthing is getting an appetizer, and one of their burgers. I love close, so I’ll be back at some point soon.
My friend and I intended on eating somewhere else but passed by on our walk. We saw how cute and rustic it looked inside, liked their menu display outside, and decided to try it out. It was honestly probably better than our first choice! Everything was so yummy and the service was so friendly and warm. We will be back to try that lava cake, though.
The food is always delicious and has a lot of flavor. Great location and the place is huge for NYC. The employees are beyond friendly and always so helpful. We dine here weekly and will keep on coming back.
got the Mac and cheese, and it was DELICIOUS! the Cajun fried chicken was literally perfection: right amount of spice, crispiness, and juiciness. my friend has been coming here for about 10 years and assures me that you can't go wrong with anything on the menu, which is a good thing because everything sounded great.
We were in New York for four weeks and the restaurant was very close by, so we went there. Four times in total. The food we had was really, really delicious. My favorite was the steak salad for $16. We like the place. The atmosphere is great and the service is super friendly. Highly recommended. A little tip: If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, you should probably avoid eating there late in the evening on weekends. It's usually very crowded and unfortunately really loud. Or reserve a table in front of the restaurant early enough.
affordability made the food at penny farthing all the more delicious. my french toast was an excellent brunch choice, especially with the added berries on top. my friend ordered scrambled eggs with bacon, a classic american way to start her day in comparison to my french choice. we washed down both of our meals with pulp-less orange juice, something my friend was more a fan of than myself. the waitress was friendly and patient with the long catch up at the table until we were ready for the check. oh to be an nyu student with penny farthing at arms reach!
I have been here twice already in the last 2 weeks. Great happy hour deals and daily specials (for example, $5 espresso martinis on Wednesdays after 4pm and $5 Aperol Spritz on Thursdays after 4pm). The food is really good too, would recommend the firecracker shrimp and wings. I've only had appetizers but I will be back to try the main dishes. Try to get reservations in advance if you can as it gets busy in the evening.
This place was great!! We walked in by accident and right huge smiles from everyone since we walked in. The very first thing we saw was this waitress holding some wings that looked amazing!!! It was a Sunday brunch so I thought it was gonna be chaotic but no. Service was ok. They took a little while to get to the table but I think there were only 2 waitresses for the whole restaurant. We got the avocado toast and the chicken sandwich. Everything was delicious! I really liked the ambiance aaaaand to top it off they have tvs all over so you can get brunch and catch the games!!! Definitely coming back
Came here with a friend and enjoyed great service from the get go! All staff was friendly and welcoming. They have a great menu! So many delicious options, we both got sandwiches and to my delight they had mashed potatoes! 😍 Drinks are also great and so fun they had seasonally themed cocktaials. I would love to come here more often
Customer service was Great and the food was Excellent! I loved the music that played as we were dining. I took 2 orders to take home after my meal. Meghan are host was very Courteous and got everything right! I am definitely going back!
Nice atmosphere, went happy hour Friday, nice beer choice, hard to get served inside. After an hour sat at a table we were asked to move to another area as there was a reservation, no signs. Moved to another room but little atmosphere. Ordered Mac and cheese. Very salty. Nice enough place
This is a good, solid pub to get a drink at. I’ve been here on multiple occasions (once for a birthday party at the bar and a second to watch some basketball games). The tv availability in the main dining area is a bit limited (there were about 2 TVs) and when the bar starts getting filled, if you’re sitting at a table it’s likely that a group of people standing will block your view. The service was great, and attentive. Plus the drinks were really good. Would definitely come back here for another night out.
I got the 3 beef sliders which were delicious. My wife’s burger was a little dry. Pretty loud if you’re just there for food. But we really enjoyed our time there.
Great neighborhood place. Been there many times and have never been disappointed!
Lovely spot I'm NYC. Had a great atmosphere very pub like but modernized. I didn't get food here so no rating there. I did enjoy and have a great time with the bar staff as they made great Tom Collins. First drink was the best though. I would make this one of my regulars if I lived in NYC.
The food was yummy. We had a plain burger for the kid, a bacon, cheddar, sautéed onion burger, a salmon sandwich. All of the sandwiches come with fries, which were SUPER. We also ordered roasted Brussels sprouts. The sprouts were tasty, but could have been a tad bit more roasted. They were more seared on one side. The mojito was my least favorite. 😔
Randomly stopped in here with my wife and we were blown away. I had the steak sandwich and she had the fig and prosciutto flat bread. The food was incredible. I don’t ever post reviews but I had to for this place. Everything was wonderful. The prices were fair. I could’ve done without the loud drunk girl yelling but she was having a good time so no bother. We will be back.
Nice place for drinks/food. The burger I had looked and tasted good, the fries were good too. The staf was friendly and the overall vibe is pretty cool. It was quite noisy, so keep that in mind if you’re looking for a calm place to drink/eat.
Pretty decent food but nothing extraordinary. I got the Penny Vegetarian Pasta and it was okay but not as good as I was expecting. Our server was very welcoming and helpful and the food came out fairly quickly which was nice. Not too busy during a weekday lunch.
The only bad thing I can say about Penny is that the guy at the front is extremely rude. Other than that, the vibes are great during the day and even at night. I’ve been to watch several games and it’s always a nice time. I wouldn’t go just to eat but I’ll go to have a few drinks and get a shareable plate
This place is nice. We always go there for lunch and sometimes we have our Christmas, Farewell lunch their or small events. We love the place because it is quick and close by our workplace. The place is always jam pack so you have to call ahead of time your order if you have a party and we always do. For appetizers the spinach dip with chips so yummy my all time favorite. And for the main course I have salmon or most of the Penny Pasta which had shrimps and arugula which for me its delish. For the dessert- lava cake is my fave always.
Very friendly service and comfortable seating at the bar. We had quite a large portion of really tasty nachos with guacamole, salsa, melted cheese and tender strips of steak. Wide range of beers and hard liqueurs. Spacious place but crowded on a Saturday night like everywhere in Manhattan at this time of day. Nevertheless, I checked it and of course I recommend it!
Great food and beers. Subpar service. Server tried to clear plates and drinks before we were finished. They also took our menus after we initially ordered, so we didn’t bother with a second you d.
I would normally say that PF is a great spot and I love hanging there as a regular from the immediate neighborhood. A “regular”. I have only given 3 stars here due to the Chef dropping the ball on hospitality. My experience in front of house is always fantastic and I’m acquainted and friendly with a few bartenders there. They’re great and understand what hospitality is about and the stars are for them. . Although I am very disappointed to find that the Chef does not share the same level of passion in hospitality. I simply wanted to order a side of garlic bread to enjoy with my pasta. I was denied this simple order by the chef that I mentioned I would happily pay extra for. He has bread. He has garlic. He has olive oil. What he doesn’t have is desire to be hospitable to regular guests.
I didn't order any food so I won't judge the food, but the drinks were good. The service is okay because this place gets crowded easily and it's hard for the staffs to keep up with the customers.
Penny Farthing is a good place to watch sports in this area, thanks to its lively atmosphere and plenty of screens. The food is generally mediocre. It offers a mix of dishes but falls short with its salmon. While it was cooked perfectly, the portion was disappointingly tiny—definitely not suitable for anyone with a hearty appetite like me. If you’re looking for a satisfying meal, I would recommend sticking to traditional bar food. The atmosphere is great for a casual night out, but for those expecting a filling dinner, the salmon might leave you wanting more. Overall, it’s best to enjoy the classics here rather than venturing into the seafood offerings. To top it off, our server dropped off the check right as we started our dessert, which felt rushed. If you go, try the wings—they're the highlight of the menu.
Food was great but our waitress really didn't do a good job. It's a weekday lunch and we got there around 1:30 pm. Not busy at all. After we were seated outside, no one showed up to serve water or take orders for a long time. We had to flag the attention of the young woman behind the bar to send our waitress. Then she forgot to bring my friend's diet Coke. Again, we had to ask another waitress to send ours to remind her of the drink order. My Cobb Salad with grilled chicken was good, so were my friends' Salmon and Burger.
Nice place, inside gives you a good old tavern vibe. The staff was very pleasant. We didn't wait long to be served. I had the Passion fruit frozen Magarita, it was delightful. Tasted like real fruit, not too sweet and had some good amount of booze 😋. Try their salmon sandwich 😋 so good. We substitute the bread for french bagette. Their burger was good quality, fries were ok. Reasonable prices.
At first glance the menu looks really good with a great variety. However, that thought quickly left my mind when I was met with some of the worst service I’ve ever had right off the bat. The waiter refused to let me order food with my drinks after waiting 15 minutes for them to take our order. Then I asked If I could have the omelette on the menu with out cheese and make my own and was told no. I asked for a burger which was bland and mediocre. Asked to substitute potato’s instead of fries which she was about to give me a hard time for but she let me. The potato’s were bland. Overall, I would look else where. With rising food and labor costs, restaurants need to focus on exceeding with service and hospitality more than ever to differentiate themselves from other restaurants. When you lack on that, you are just a price on the menu. And that was our thought once we left. Do better at hospitality!!
There's a giant sign on the wall that says "Wednesdays all day -- $5 espresso martinis". So i ordered one. The bartender says "we don't do that anymore". I asked why. He said "the deal stops at 10pm". That's not what your giant menu on the wall says. He says "the menu is outdated". Uhh, then take it down. Lying to your customers is not cool.
Sloppy service- paid 23% incorrectly higher bill!! So we had two glasses of wine, bread pudding, Mac and cheese , and grilled cheese sandwich . The food is terrible to all right. Grilled cheese sandwich came with roasted tomato in the bread and did not taste good. Mac and cheese was okay. The wine was supposed to be on happy hour. The waiteress did not apply the happy hour discount. So we ended up paying $15 for each glass which should have been $8!!!! It increases our bill by good 23%!!!!!!!! For food which did not taste good to pay with tips $90!! . Nope. Ambience top notch. Service sloppy.
Used to be ok. Now very overpriced and food quality went way down. Ridiculous high pricing for a glass of really bad wine. Just awful. You need a strong stomach and a full wallet for this place. Plus the service is lousy. They throw the food on the table and run. Get your own salt and pepper if you can find it.
I used to love going to this place for their Happy Hour deals. Unfortunately, they changed their policy out of nowhere (despite failing to update their advertising), so they shouldn’t expect any more of my business. Unhappy happy hour, unfortunately. In addition, they were also hounding my table to leave for an incoming reservation with no prior heads-up as for the 90-minute limit, despite discussing a 2-hour period for my business event.
Unfortunately I was not able to enjoy this space because the HOMOPHOBIC bouncer would not let me in. He allowed all of my friends to go in, then accused me of “stumbling” on the sidewalk even though I was sober. I went to dinner & went back two hours later & the bouncer told me I had to walk to the corner of the block & back in order to be able to come in. I was targeted & this was a clear example of homophobic behavior & I am so disappointed in this establishments behavior.
I was overcharged here during happy hour and had a really disappointing experience trying to resolve it. When I called the employee acknowledged that I was charged incorrectly and took down my information but no one ever followed up or fixed the issue. I had to dispute the charge through my bank just to get it addressed and it’s still pending.
The head server was super rude to us she gave us a table and asked us to order 5 appetisers at the beginning. We to her our friends are a block away and we would order the remaining two in a minute. She straight up said there’s no special rule for us you got the table because you said you would order 5 appetisers and we want it now. Very very rude
Apparently happy hour is only at the bar, and margaritas don’t count as cocktails for half off?? They could have at least told us that they were charging full price for drinks they said would be half off. Total scam
I had lunch with some friends here this weekend. And it was insane and loud and busy. Because it was a Saturday during college football season. Our entrees were great. Our server was excellent especially considering how slammed her section was. As I was drinking an Aperol Spritz I noticed there was a fruit fly in the glass. I alerted my dining companions to look out for the server so I could get it replaced. And she was unavailable for quite some time. So when she did come over I brought it to her attention. And said I’d rather it just be taken off the bill as we had finished eating and had to be somewhere after. What happened next was insane. The server was sent back to the table 3x by a manager to ask questions and take the glass away to be examined. And all of this happened within sight of our table. Then the manager came over and rudely told me that she shouldn’t take it off the bill because I drank so much of it. I ingested something you served me with a bug in it and you are mad I did not notice quick enough? She then said well things happen when you sit outside. What was in my drink was a fruit-fly. Which I know from working in hospitiality are usually found inside of a bar. It was probably in their fruit tray where they keep the garnishes. Her whole tone was so nasty and condescending. Sadly she didn’t introduce herself and I was too stunned to ask her name. From the other reviews I have read here it seems like there is an issue overall with the management team of this establishment.
