Vatan New York Reviews
I had a wonderful experience at Vatan last night. The staff was exceptionally warm and hospitable—a true reflection of Indian hospitality at its finest. The food was served generously in large silver thaalis, and every dish was vegetarian, authentic, and beautifully prepared. The team even went out of their way to accommodate a cake cutting for our party, bringing the cake out while singing Happy Birthday, which was a lovely and thoughtful touch. The atmosphere of the restaurant is remarkably serene and peaceful. It’s the kind of place where, once seated, you effortlessly forget the stresses of everyday life. The décor, designed to resemble an Indian village, is absolutely stunning. From the majestic banyan tree and hand-painted murals of Indian village life, to the large Ganesh statue placed high in an alcove near the ceiling, every detail felt intentional and exquisite. Even the traditional well added to the immersive experience. After dinner, we asked to see the rest of the restaurant and were shown the lower-level seating area, inspired by the Ajanta and Ellora caves. It was both beautiful and private. The upstairs seating area, designed to feel like dining in the skies among thatched roofs, is equally charming. Tip: Request a seat under the banyan tree—it’s the best spot in the restaurant, in my opinion! Vatan is truly a must-visit—and absolutely worth returning to!
Vatan Indian Restaurant is not just a place to eat — it’s an experience. From the moment you walk in, you’re transported into an Indian village setting, complete with hut-style décor, earthy tones, and beautiful wall paintings. The ambience alone sets it apart from most Indian restaurants and makes the visit feel special and immersive. Vatan focuses on Gujarati thalis, with thoughtful variations to accommodate different dietary needs. The concept is simple but executed extremely well. The staff are very attentive and take the time to explain each dish as it arrives, which adds to the enjoyment, especially if you’re new to Gujarati cuisine. Their warmth and hospitality truly stand out. The meal begins with a generous selection of appetizers, and they are surprisingly filling. By the time the main thali arrives, you already feel satisfied. While the thali is technically unlimited, the appetizers alone could be a meal in themselves. Everything is served fresh, well-seasoned, and balanced — flavorful without being heavy. When the main course arrives, it’s a colorful spread of traditional Gujarati dishes, each with its own distinct taste and texture. The variety is impressive, and the pacing of the meal allows you to enjoy each item without feeling rushed. Refills are offered readily, but honestly, the quantity and quality make it easy to reach your limit quickly. Overall, Vatan offers something truly unique — a combination of authentic flavors, generous portions, and a setting that feels like a cultural journey. It’s perfect for anyone looking to experience regional Indian cuisine in a thoughtful, immersive way. Highly recommended if you want more than just a meal.
We loved the food, atmosphere and service at Vatan. They offered a large variety of delicious and flavorful dishes. It was wonderful to get to try so many dishes. Kira was so welcoming, sweet and respectful. We were so impressed by her patience while she took the time to explain each dish. It has been a while since we actually experienced such genuinely kind and considerate service at a restaurant. Absolutely loved our experience, will definitely visit again.
The price might seem a bit high, but the variety of dishes they offer in the unlimited thali is worth it. The meal was hearty and has home feel to it. There is a plate full of appetizers and another plate for mains. The gulab jamun was heavenly. I recommend going here hungry if you want to try all the dishes!
We host a monthly supper club (roughly 15-20 people attend) and this was a perfect setting for the large group. The pre fix is robust and well prepared. This style of food is inherently carbohydrate heavy, the menu even mentions something about not coming if you’re on a diet! They serve all types of alcohol. The setting is really fun, it’s supposed to make you feel like you’re visiting the region. An experience worth trying. Not your typical NYC restaurant.
Vatan means Home. Authentic Indian vegetarian restaurant. Big ganesh idol, Banyan tree, hand painted table, bg elephant in front. . Vegetarian thali consists of 3 dinner meals appetizer, main entree and desserts. Open 5.30 to 9.30pm Food was typical Gujarati. Staff was polite, excellent service, the price are around $58 with taxes are higher but you can try once as all you can eat. Difficult to find parking outside. Recommended this restaurant.
This restaurant is so beautiful. It was my first time having a thali, and our server Sharon was so patient and informative about the dishes in each course. The staff also took extra care about my nut allergy. They accommodated for my nut allergy. Everything was delicious. Come prepared to eat.
The food was absolutely excellent, and I enjoyed every single bite! 🍽️ A must-visit for anyone who loves authentic Gujarati pure vegetarian food or enjoys exploring different cuisines. The flavors were rich and satisfying, and a special mention goes to Mr. Venkat, whose outstanding service and detailed explanations about the dishes made the experience even more delightful—⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for him! 🌟
Absolutely amazing place and food. I can say you will not regret visiting this place. We ordered Gujarati Thali and i have never eaten such a delicious food. They have everything starting from Starters, Main course and finally deserts. And all are far beyond expectations so yummy and tasty. Even the service is expectional, Thanks Venkat for offering wonderful service. Ambience is 👌 awesome.. Highly recommend..Don't miss to visit VATAN New York..But please book your table in advance..
From the very first bite of the fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth dhokla and mirchi bhajji , I knew I was in for something special. The service from Venkat and Rohan was nothing short of gold standard — warm, attentive, and so genuinely kind that it felt like dining in a family home. True to the spirit of atithi devo bhava, they made us feel cherished guests. The kadhi leaned a little sweet for my personal taste, but still beautifully balanced — and honestly, when everything else is this good, you just smile and keep going back for “one more bite.” 😋 Vatan runs on a single unlimited set menu, but with such variety and freshness, you don’t need choices — you just need an appetite! A true homely experience in the heart of New York. 🥘💛
Vatan offers an amazing all-you-can-eat vegetarian thali in a beautifully decorated, traditional setting. Every dish is packed with authentic flavors, and the variety is impressive. The service is warm and attentive, and the overall experience feels like a cultural escape. Highly recommend for anyone who loves Indian food. One thing to mention that it’s a fixed menu and all as you can eat, so make sure you are really hungry and have enough time to enjoy everything..
I'm truly speechless and out of words for this restaurant. Everything from ambience, service, food quality and taste is top notch and most authentic Indian food you can get anywhere. Every single dish/appetizer/main course has been nailed down to perfection, just how you find it in India. I was homesick and this restaurant definitely is going to be my go-to comfort place for a wholesome desi meal.
I loved the place! I came here with high expectations, and I'm leaving thrilled. Everything was very fresh and yummy. I was amazed by not only the flavors but also the ingredients and all the different textures. Mina was 10/10. Thank you so much for an unforgettable experience. I'm definitely recommending this place. It is also very clean and welcoming. The place inside is amazing, too.
Ambiance and service is great. Love the food too and it's a set menu. The Mirch bajji is really spicy Definitely an experience worth trying.

A very good authentic vegetarian restaurant with excellent service. Dishes are well prepared and served with attention and style. Must try.
I really enjoyed the all you can eat Thali meal here. The staff was also very accommodating considering we didn't have a reservation and they got us in relatively quickly, though the food still took a long time since they were full. The nice thing is that you get a little bit of everything here. So many vegetarian appetizers and so many vegetarian main dishes and even 4 or 5 dessert options. And you can ask for seconds for anything. I'm usually not a fan of deal, but here the deal was so delicious when mixed with a little khitchri that I had to get seconds. Absolutely delicious.
Vatan is a wonderful vegetarian place! The chapatis taste just like home, and the servers were really kind and attentive. They serve buffet-style rather than individual items, but I actually loved it so many dishes to try and everything was flavorful. Definitely a great spot if you enjoy authentic vegetarian food.
We came here to celebrate a birthday. We picked this place because we heard a lot of good things about it. Let's start with the ambiance. It is excellent. Good for groups. Relaxed spacious atmosphere. The service, while not rude, was not particularly warm as others have mentioned here. The service was quick though. In fact, everything felt a wee bit rushed. They asked to clear the trays while some of us were still eating for both courses. They asked maybe once during the meal if there was anything else we wanted. For dessert, the impression was that you can have only one or the other. In reality, nothing about the meal felt like it was all you can eat. The check was dropped off swiftly, while still eating, of course. However, id say the food was good. There's a good variety on each thali so there's bound to be something you'd like. We didn't come on a busy night, nor was it near closing time. So I don't know why they were in such a hurry. Maybe all the reviews gave me too high of expectations?? I'm not sure if this is going to be a repeat for me.
Great appetizer selections, good main course varieties, could be more dessert options.

If you are looking for authentic Indian food, or even just good Indian food, this is not it. The dishes are bland and forgettable. The batatavada and the mirchi bhajiya were good in the appetizer thali. None of the dishes in the entree thali were good, it tasted like pre-made, frozen meals. We were all highly disappointed. The malai ice cream was good in the dessert thali. Ambience is nice and service was meh. For the price they charge, no justification for this quality of food or service. I recommend anyone that enjoys Indian cuisine to skip it entirely. NYC has countless better Indian food to offer.
Poor behaviour and terrible service. The food was meh. They tried a very hard upsell on liquor and were disappointed that we didn't take them up on it

I wish I can give 0 rating. I went to Vatan expecting an authentic Gujarati thali experience, but the overall value and pricing structure made the experience disappointing. The base price of the thali itself is already very high at $45 per person, which is significantly above what a traditional Gujarati thali typically costs, even in major cities. What makes it more frustrating is that this is not the final price. On top of that, the restaurant adds an 18% “operational/service charge per plate”, and then tax is applied afterward. By the time everything is added, the total comes out to an amount that feels completely disproportionate to what is being offered. Gujarati thali is traditionally known as a simple, wholesome, and abundant meal, rooted in home-style cooking and value. While Vatan does present the food in a traditional format and the concept itself is interesting, the pricing completely breaks the spirit of what a thali represents. At this price point, one expects either exceptional luxury, premium ingredients, or a truly standout culinary experience — and this does not feel like that. The additional operational charge also feels poorly justified. If service and operational costs are part of running the restaurant, they should be transparently reflected in the menu price rather than added later in a way that feels unexpected and excessive. Seeing a mandatory 18% charge before tax makes the bill feel inflated and leaves a sour impression, regardless of the food quality. Overall, while the idea of showcasing regional Indian cuisine is appreciated, the cost-to-value ratio is extremely weak. For the same total amount, you can enjoy multiple high-quality Indian meals elsewhere, including Gujarati food, without hidden or layered charges. This restaurant may appeal to tourists or first-time visitors curious about the concept, but for anyone familiar with Gujarati cuisine or looking for fair value, the pricing structure makes it hard to recommend.
