Opinions de Vatan New York
Amazing experience and service. Our server Sharon was so amicable and fun. The food was very yummy and definitely spicy enough for me. They also had a lot of vegan options for those with that dietary restriction.
Vatan is an extraordinary representation of regional authenticity in Indian cuisine - Gujarati food. This isn't some hole in the wall, but quite a spacious, architecturally beautiful and soul satisfying restaurant. The moment you walk in, you are charmed by the village style decor of Gujarat. The unlimited prix fixed menu is the way to go - lots of Appetizers, main course & desserts to fill you up. Each item has a unique taste and is mostly healthy, vegetarian food. I am from Gujarat & can vouch for this place as authentic. At $50pp, it ain't cheap but overall absolutely worth the pleasant experience. The service is genuinely warm & exceptional.
The food quality and variety is great. We loved each bite of it. The reason that bowled us over was our host of the evening JAY!!He is the manager at Vatan, his warm smile and down to earth hospitality is something that remained with us even after our dinner. Excellent choice for anyone who loves and appreciates quality Indian vegetarian food especially from Gujarati State.
Devashi, she was really nice. She was fairly helpful and informative of the options and varieties and very very kind. The food quality was really really good as well. A regular visitor of vatan
Awesome place. Flavorfil and authentic food, they have a lot of consideration for vegans and alergies. I love that their portion sizes aren't tiny like Italian places. Waiters are professional and helpful. I only deduct one mini point because they rush people to finish their meals so they can sit moee custormers.
Very Very nice quality food so much hijenic. I am so much impressed. Thank you so much Maliniben your restaurant is best. thank VATAN
One of the best home away from home experiences, far away in the midst of New York. If you are seeking a genuinely Gujarati Thali experience, look no further than Vatan. With best service, genuine care, excellent ambience, and with food that is sure to fulfill your stomach and heart 💜❤️ alike. It's not often one expects to fine this kind of experience so far away from is origins. If you are visiting New York and looking for great vegetarian food, check this place without a miss. Definitely not your normal Indian restaurant, so feel free to talk to the restaurant with any questions before reserving a table which is highly recommended.
One of (if not the only) Indian restaurant in Manhattan serving Gujarati food. The meal is all-you-can-eat and served thali style. The whole restaurant tries to transport you to the villages of India through a huge mural complete with a painted ceiling, a few low tables, and bamboo/straw overhangs. Despite the top notch ambiance, the food itself is the highlight of the experience. They serve an appetizer thali, a main thali, and a few desserts. My favorite items were the khaman, sev puri, spinach bhaji, and kneer. All the flavors were very authentic and reminded me of the homemade Gujarati cooking I grew up with. Cannot recommend this restaurant more for anyone who wants to try new cuisines and regional Indian dishes not available elsewhere.
Came her with family and friends for dinner. We had a truly exceptional experience with the food but to top it all Harsh was a fabulous host . He not only made the experience enjoyable but he also informed us about every dish and had interesting fun conversations with us. Thank Harsh for making us feel like home and enjoy the food. Thank you Vatan to make this a fantastic memory.
It was a wonderful experience, the food was delicious and atmosphere was amazing! Our host - Krupa was also very sweet, explained everything and as it was a birthday celebration they had special seats and sweet little treat towards the end from the host. Wonderful experience overall.
Vatan on 3rd Street NYC is a must-visit for authentic Indian cuisine. The ambiance is warm and traditional, making it a cozy spot for a great meal. Our server, Bindu, was friendly and attentive, offering great recommendations. The thali was delicious, with a perfect blend of spices and flavors. Highly recommend for an authentic dining experience!
I just had the pleasure of dining at this incredible Gujarati restaurant, and it was a culinary experience to remember! The flavors were authentic, with every dish bursting with the perfect blend of spices and tradition. The staff was warm and welcoming, making the dining experience even more special. The ambiance was cozy yet vibrant, reflecting the cultural essence of Gujarat. If you’re craving authentic Gujarati food, this is the place to go. A hidden gem that I can’t wait to visit again!
My all time favourite Gujarati restaurant in NYC. From the detailing of the restaurant to the people to food, I love everything about this place. You feel warmth by the grandeur of the place and the people. It is 2 floored and some tables have seatings where you can remove your shoes and fold your legs and have food ( Indian tradition). Everything is pre set, the thali costs 45$ and will have a 20% gratuity included, so keep that in mind. The { and entrees are really well crafted. The servers always check on you if you need refills etc.. so you are well taken care of. I love the hospitality and the traditional food served here, I'm coming again *__*
One of the most unique experiences we’ve had in the city! Wonderful staff, Yash was exceptional and we had a lovely dinner!! Would highly recommend this restaurant.
It is crazy that I walked by Vatan for 15 years without knowing that it was an Indian restaurant. The food and staff especially Devi were amazing. Vatan is more than a restaurant, it is an experience. Come hungry as it the set menu is a lot of food (which is all wonderful).
This restaurant is one of NYCs best kept secrets. Truly great ambience, amazing vegetarian Gujarati food, and most importantly, great service! Went there on a busy Saturday evening, but our waiter, Harsh took great care of us, tended to our every need very professionally. The food is like a home cooked meal at a Gujarati home (Gujarat is a state in western India, known for it's gastronomy and sweet people and even sweeter cuisine!) The meals are served in 3 different courses, unlimited and in traditional serveware. Most Indian food is best enjoyed with your hands and this meal is no exception either! Definitely a must try if you are in NYC. Why don't they have a Michelin star yet?
Unlimited 3 course Gujarati meal with each course having many great tasting dishes. The staff are super friendly and attentive and explain each course. It did feel a little rushed which I put down to the high turnover in reservations but still plenty of time to enjoy all the food. Honestly, I could not function after this meal - food coma was real! Vegetarian place that caters for various diets. Highly recommend.
Khush was amazing and he took care of us and our daughter. He answered all our questions and was very kind. The food was also fantastic and the new additions to the menu is amazing. I wish I could eat more.
We had an incredible experience at Vatan, NYC!! This is a must visit restaurant if you are in the mood for authentic Gujarati thali dining experience. The food was delicious, the ambience was stunning, the smallest attention to detail to ensure a complete Indian experience was heart warming. I haven’t tasted such perfect food!!
Krupa was very warm and professional and gave excellent service. She took the time to explain all the items on the menu. Because of friendly and kind staff like her, eating food becomes a celebrated experience. Thank you Krupa :)
Davisha was absolutely THE BEST ! We were celebrating our friend’s special birthday and our table of 6 was on a time crunch . Davisha made sure we had premium experience here for many of our first time. She helped us make sure our friend feel so special bringing out the birthday cake and taking ultimate care for all of us 💕! Will definitely return here often . Davisha deserves all the praise and raises !!!
Very good food from the western india- Gujarati Cuisine. The service was also excellent our sever name was Payal , she was extremely attentive and very pleasant. Please reserve the table before going there . We were asked to remove footwear and sit in crossed leg seating- traditional Indian seating for eating meal. They serve the 3 course meal - appetizers, main course and then dessert. We were stuffed in the first course it self. I would definitely recommend this place and visit again when in New York city.
Vatan is an amazing and unique spot in NYC. The food, value, service and atmosphere are all phenomenal. Sharon went above and beyond in our recent visit and dug up mohanthar for me when I mentioned I loved it. Unbelievable - thanks Sharon! We come here time and time again and the experience always delivers.
Incredible dining experience! Especially as a Gujarati (but also loved seeing plenty of people from other cultures coming to try the food!). My waiter Venkat was super attentive and friendly, and made the whole experience that much better! Thank you Vatan for a lovely evening!
If I could give 10 stars I would. This vegetarian Indian restaurant has remained consistent over the many many years I have been going. You are welcomed in like a friend. Two levels, some seating is shoeless… the food keeps coming… presented in many smalls trays each explained in great detail… if you had a favorite you can ask for more ! I’ve been to India and this is spot on. Be sure to make a Rez. Interiors not to be missed. 💕
Have been here couple of times. Authentic mix of Marathi and Gujarati flavors. Vatan is not just about food. This family owned and run place is about Indian village experience. Rustic mud walls, small huts, floor seating and served food in big steel plates. The price point is also something that will not break your bank. People there are also caring and helpful. I have taken few non-Indian friends there and they loved it too. You can ask for non-spicy food and they will serve that.
Vatan offers an incredible Gujarati dining experience! The thali was perfectly balanced with traditional flavors, and the presentation was beautiful. The staff was friendly, the service was quick, and the atmosphere made me feel like I was in a real Indian village. Highly recommend this place for anyone craving authentic Gujarati cuisine.
Overall really great experience, and food made me feel like i am eating in india. Service was really good , guy name amit was really friendly in nature. The staff here were truly wonderful – so kind and welcoming in nature. I really appreciated how patiently they explained each detail of the recipes, which made the dining experience even more enjoyable and personal. Their knowledge and friendliness added so much value to the meal.
This was our first visit but my son's second. It is a fairly nice place with a unique decor and style and the service was superb. However, I have given only 4 stars to the food because although it was quite good it wasn't the best Gujrati thali I have had. I have had Gujarati food in various restaurants in Vadodara, Ahmedabad and Mumbai and on 100s of occasions. This was good but it doesn't fall in my top 10% of all times but definitely better than the Gujarati thali I had in the Bay area of the USA several years ago. Quite costly though but maybe everything's too costly in the US post Covid. Possibly for this amount I could travel to Ahmedabad from residence in India to have a more authentic Gujarati thali. In the US though I would definitely recommend this place to anyone missing Gujarati cuisine.
Had a wonderful experience at Vatan! Our server, Venkat, was absolutely amazing — so warm, friendly, and genuinely funny. He made the whole experience even more enjoyable and went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time. The food was fantastic! The main course was especially delicious, and because of the Diwali special, we got to try shrikhand and mohanthal — both were outstanding. Overall, a lovely dining experience with amazing food and even better service. Definitely coming back!
Fantastic spot! The ambience feels warm and homely. Our server Divisha was genuinely pleasant and attentive! The food was absolutely amazing, flavorful, authentic, and served with such care. It’s an all-you-can-eat experience at a very reasonable price. A must-try if you love Gujarati food or are curious to explore this wonderful cuisine.
Came here for a friend’s birthday - we all got the buffet option. Divine Indian food: all of us were completely stuffed by the end of this meal. The samosas, different curries and bread - all of which were excellent. Fair warning: as someone with a reasonably high spice tolerance, the fried pepper definitely challenged me. The service was also amazing: they made sure everyone in our party was taken care of (different spice levels, bringing water, brought out the cake after I called ahead). Would definitely come again either for a casual meal or for a special occasion.
Vatan is truly a gem of a place to experience heartwarming and bellywarming Gujarati food in the US. As a Gujarati, I appreciated this rare place in the States that offers variety of dishes from my culture. The food flavors are authentic and of high quality - no excess oil, nor excess spices. Just an amazing balance of flavors that made me feel at home having warm home-cooked meals. The three course meals were a lot but the quantity offered was just the right amount to taste every dish and enjoy the flavors. The ambience was a little too dark to fully see everything but I thoroughly enjoyed the traditional touches here and there that made me feel like I was in Gujarat. Our server Dhara served us with warmth and kindness which we appreciated. The only thing I wished for was that the buttermilk should be included in the three course meals. It is an integral part of a full Gujarati meal and fully completes the whole experience. Overall, deep gratitude that Vatan exists and the unique value it brings to its customers and celebrates Gujarati food culture which is such a rare thing to find in the US. Thank you everyone for creating this place.
Divisha, our server, was amazing. Kind, funny, and easily explained everything. The food was delicious. Easy to make nut free or gluten free. Having all the food essentially ordered for you makes the experience very simple and fun to appreciate the culture and food. The atmosphere is calming and inviting. Strongly recommend for vegetarian Indian.
everything here was to the point. loved the food, service and ambience. We were served by Divisha who asked us about our food preferences or if we had any allergies which is not seen everywhere. She explained all the dishes and their contents properly just after putting up the plate in front of us. so we were aware of what we were having. job well done. we will definitely come back here. I think this place good example of how to host customers
This is my second time here after 3 years and it was amazing as always. Yash took care of us today and an awesome time was had. Be on the look out for him when you’re here the next time. Super attentive, caring, knows his job really well. Thanks guys! Can’t wait to be back 😇✨
Omg this place is an absolute gem! The food is amazing. We had a 3-course meal with authentic Gujarati flavors. Honestly, it’s not just about the taste, it’s the warmth in their serving that makes it special 😍
exceptional service and good. atmosphere was top notch and the food was extremely flavorful. i would say its really affordable thalli and in the heart of the city. jiyan was super sweet and was amazing with everything!!!
It’s quite an experience dining here. The service was brisk and attentive. The server did an excellent job explaining the many dishes. Our Indian friends brought us here and said the food is authentic. If you like Gujarati thali then this is for you. For me, the food was too sweet and on the heavy side.
Excellent food, service (shout out to Divisha who did a fantastic job) and interior design. It’s such an interesting space and you’re given three amazing courses that had a ton of variety. It’s my third time here and I highly recommend.
This is hands down the best dining experience I’ve had in Kips Bay. This was my first time having Gujarati-style Indian food. First, the ambience was perfectly intimate, authentic, and cozy. The staff was wonderful and made our date night dining experience unforgettable. Our Waitress, Dhara was the best waitress - she was very informative in all the dishes we were being served and had such a wonderful energy about her. The food is all you can eat for a very affordable price. From appetizers, entrees to desserts. The first round served as a tasting experience which let us explore the flavors of the cuisine. And if we liked something we were able to get refills as much as we want. Love this place - Thank you so much Dhara for making it unforgettable. We will see you soon
Our server, Divisha was great. Super friendly, checked in on us frequently and did not rush us at all. The food was excellent. Simple and traditional. The ambiance really makes you feel like you’re in an Indian village.
A pure vegetarian restaurant in New York and that too offering all you can it or what we call back in India...unlimited Gujrati Thali. Awesome Indian style sitting. Beautiful Decorations with Idol of Ganesh and beautiful paintings on walls. A fixed set menu but you can get all variety in it. Authentic Gujrati taste just like back home. Variety of Indian starters, main course with options of breads like chapati aur fulkas or rotlis. Indian style daal rice or pulav. And at the end Indian Desserts. Beautiful Indian tunes playing ambiently in background. Well mannered Poilte smiling staff. A Huge Baniyan tree added in the Interiors for homely feel. No hurry in either serving or getting the table vacated. You can have a sumptuous tasty Indian food with no hurry. Nice clean restrooms. Being Indian and vegetarians this place was a bliss. We loved it.👍🏻😍🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
Hands down the best Indian food I’ve had in NYC!! They’re right- don’t go here if you’re on a diet bcoz the flavors are so delicious and filling that you’d keep wanting to eat more! It’s a 3 course set menu which consists of pretty much all kinds of snacks like samosa, vada pao, paani puri, veg sabzis, gulab jamun. The value in their food is so high! Would recommend a 10/10 Our server Divisha was fantastic! She was prompt in checking in if we wanted something and explained everything she was bringing to the table with great details!!
Wow. What an experience. Everything about this restaurant was amazing. Firstly, the service was excellent. Our server was super nice, knowledgeable, and patient with me, haha. The dinner starts with a sampling of every appetizer, which I really enjoyed most of. Then, the same thing happens but for the entrees. And lastly, dessert. During and after all of that, you can reorder whatever you want, however much you want. Such an awesome experience.
Amazing Gujarati food in NYC! All you can eat so come hungry. The food is well flavored. The dessert is fantastic. Just need to add Coke Zero to the soft drink selection. Great service too.
I had a wonderful experience at Vatan last night. The staff was exceptionally warm and hospitable—a true reflection of Indian hospitality at its finest. The food was served generously in large silver thaalis, and every dish was vegetarian, authentic, and beautifully prepared. The team even went out of their way to accommodate a cake cutting for our party, bringing the cake out while singing Happy Birthday, which was a lovely and thoughtful touch. The atmosphere of the restaurant is remarkably serene and peaceful. It’s the kind of place where, once seated, you effortlessly forget the stresses of everyday life. The décor, designed to resemble an Indian village, is absolutely stunning. From the majestic banyan tree and hand-painted murals of Indian village life, to the large Ganesh statue placed high in an alcove near the ceiling, every detail felt intentional and exquisite. Even the traditional well added to the immersive experience. After dinner, we asked to see the rest of the restaurant and were shown the lower-level seating area, inspired by the Ajanta and Ellora caves. It was both beautiful and private. The upstairs seating area, designed to feel like dining in the skies among thatched roofs, is equally charming. Tip: Request a seat under the banyan tree—it’s the best spot in the restaurant, in my opinion! Vatan is truly a must-visit—and absolutely worth returning to!
Vatan Indian Restaurant is not just a place to eat — it’s an experience. From the moment you walk in, you’re transported into an Indian village setting, complete with hut-style décor, earthy tones, and beautiful wall paintings. The ambience alone sets it apart from most Indian restaurants and makes the visit feel special and immersive. Vatan focuses on Gujarati thalis, with thoughtful variations to accommodate different dietary needs. The concept is simple but executed extremely well. The staff are very attentive and take the time to explain each dish as it arrives, which adds to the enjoyment, especially if you’re new to Gujarati cuisine. Their warmth and hospitality truly stand out. The meal begins with a generous selection of appetizers, and they are surprisingly filling. By the time the main thali arrives, you already feel satisfied. While the thali is technically unlimited, the appetizers alone could be a meal in themselves. Everything is served fresh, well-seasoned, and balanced — flavorful without being heavy. When the main course arrives, it’s a colorful spread of traditional Gujarati dishes, each with its own distinct taste and texture. The variety is impressive, and the pacing of the meal allows you to enjoy each item without feeling rushed. Refills are offered readily, but honestly, the quantity and quality make it easy to reach your limit quickly. Overall, Vatan offers something truly unique — a combination of authentic flavors, generous portions, and a setting that feels like a cultural journey. It’s perfect for anyone looking to experience regional Indian cuisine in a thoughtful, immersive way. Highly recommended if you want more than just a meal.
We loved the food, atmosphere and service at Vatan. They offered a large variety of delicious and flavorful dishes. It was wonderful to get to try so many dishes. Kira was so welcoming, sweet and respectful. We were so impressed by her patience while she took the time to explain each dish. It has been a while since we actually experienced such genuinely kind and considerate service at a restaurant. Absolutely loved our experience, will definitely visit again.
The price might seem a bit high, but the variety of dishes they offer in the unlimited thali is worth it. The meal was hearty and has home feel to it. There is a plate full of appetizers and another plate for mains. The gulab jamun was heavenly. I recommend going here hungry if you want to try all the dishes!
We host a monthly supper club (roughly 15-20 people attend) and this was a perfect setting for the large group. The pre fix is robust and well prepared. This style of food is inherently carbohydrate heavy, the menu even mentions something about not coming if you’re on a diet! They serve all types of alcohol. The setting is really fun, it’s supposed to make you feel like you’re visiting the region. An experience worth trying. Not your typical NYC restaurant.
Vatan means Home. Authentic Indian vegetarian restaurant. Big ganesh idol, Banyan tree, hand painted table, bg elephant in front. . Vegetarian thali consists of 3 dinner meals appetizer, main entree and desserts. Open 5.30 to 9.30pm Food was typical Gujarati. Staff was polite, excellent service, the price are around $58 with taxes are higher but you can try once as all you can eat. Difficult to find parking outside. Recommended this restaurant.
This restaurant is so beautiful. It was my first time having a thali, and our server Sharon was so patient and informative about the dishes in each course. The staff also took extra care about my nut allergy. They accommodated for my nut allergy. Everything was delicious. Come prepared to eat.
The food was absolutely excellent, and I enjoyed every single bite! 🍽️ A must-visit for anyone who loves authentic Gujarati pure vegetarian food or enjoys exploring different cuisines. The flavors were rich and satisfying, and a special mention goes to Mr. Venkat, whose outstanding service and detailed explanations about the dishes made the experience even more delightful—⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for him! 🌟
Absolutely amazing place and food. I can say you will not regret visiting this place. We ordered Gujarati Thali and i have never eaten such a delicious food. They have everything starting from Starters, Main course and finally deserts. And all are far beyond expectations so yummy and tasty. Even the service is expectional, Thanks Venkat for offering wonderful service. Ambience is 👌 awesome.. Highly recommend..Don't miss to visit VATAN New York..But please book your table in advance..
From the very first bite of the fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth dhokla and mirchi bhajji , I knew I was in for something special. The service from Venkat and Rohan was nothing short of gold standard — warm, attentive, and so genuinely kind that it felt like dining in a family home. True to the spirit of atithi devo bhava, they made us feel cherished guests. The kadhi leaned a little sweet for my personal taste, but still beautifully balanced — and honestly, when everything else is this good, you just smile and keep going back for “one more bite.” 😋 Vatan runs on a single unlimited set menu, but with such variety and freshness, you don’t need choices — you just need an appetite! A true homely experience in the heart of New York. 🥘💛
Vatan offers an amazing all-you-can-eat vegetarian thali in a beautifully decorated, traditional setting. Every dish is packed with authentic flavors, and the variety is impressive. The service is warm and attentive, and the overall experience feels like a cultural escape. Highly recommend for anyone who loves Indian food. One thing to mention that it’s a fixed menu and all as you can eat, so make sure you are really hungry and have enough time to enjoy everything..
I'm truly speechless and out of words for this restaurant. Everything from ambience, service, food quality and taste is top notch and most authentic Indian food you can get anywhere. Every single dish/appetizer/main course has been nailed down to perfection, just how you find it in India. I was homesick and this restaurant definitely is going to be my go-to comfort place for a wholesome desi meal.
I loved the place! I came here with high expectations, and I'm leaving thrilled. Everything was very fresh and yummy. I was amazed by not only the flavors but also the ingredients and all the different textures. Mina was 10/10. Thank you so much for an unforgettable experience. I'm definitely recommending this place. It is also very clean and welcoming. The place inside is amazing, too.
Ambiance and service is great. Love the food too and it's a set menu. The Mirch bajji is really spicy Definitely an experience worth trying.

A very good authentic vegetarian restaurant with excellent service. Dishes are well prepared and served with attention and style. Must try.
Good food and great service. A totally authentic experience recreated like that of Choki Dhaani village in India. Although that is in Rajasthan but the Gujarati food here at Vatan is all Gujarati. Come here when you want to taste the authenticity or missing home. Only con is that it’s super expensive but maybe okay for NYC crowd. Server name- VR
Vatan was a pleasant surprise. The thali felt anything but generic. Every dish tasted thoughtful, fresh, and perfectly balanced. The space itself feels warm and inviting, and has has this comforting, home cooked charm. Kira, was lovely and made the evening even better.
Vatan is a pure veg restaurant with an unlimited fixed menu for $34. And it's totally worth it. I really loved their food. The flavors are authentic and the food is fresh. The minor issue we had was with waitress who seemed in a hurry for reasons unknown to us. Overall we had a really great time and enjoyed the food. Definitely coming back.
One of my friends told me about this place. The interior of this place reminded me of the roadside restaurant back in india. It's beautiful, I loved it. Ok, only go here if you have a big appetite. It's all you can eat prefix menu. The food was delicious. Staff was friendly and attentive. 20% service charge is added to your total bill.
We were in NYC for a weekend. Google search led to Vatan. We got a reservation for 9:30 pm and it closes at 10. Their atmosphere is amazing! Nice vibe, you feel like you’re eating in a small village in India. It’s all-you-can-eat concept. Menu is fixed, you get appetizer, entree and dessert. It is bit pricey (~$60 per person) but that’s expected in NYC. Food was decent. Nothing top of the line but you pay for the experience and service. We were served by Suchi (Suchitra). She was excellent and explained us all the items.
The place is very cozy and ambience was good. The food is mediocre. If you like everything mildly sweet, you will like it. It's Gujarati cuisine. The table we got was hard to get into. We were asked to take our footwear off and we literally had to slide both our legs into the crevice and slide our bodies into the seat.
Looking for Gujarati food in middle of New York downtown then it’s a good place to go. There were lots of options for appetizers and those are unlimited as well. The ambiance was good. It shows Gujarati culture in typical way which is cool. The taste was little blended. Since we requested for spicy food but it wasn’t spicy at all for us otherwise everything else was perfect. Good customer service and very humble staff.
Beautiful atmosphere, reminds you of the traditional villages in India. Fantastic service. The hosts and waiters were very kind to walk us through different parts of our meals and answer any questions. It's a pre-fixed vegetarian 3-course meal. One can order alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages on the side. For me, the appetizers were better than the main course. The food was tasty, but not really mind blowing. It was a lot of food.
Good enough place if you want a pre-fixe Gujarati tali. Little pricey for the experience ($45 +tax/tip so about $58/pp, but it is unlimited "refills" on the food. Place does have beer/wine/cocktails (extra $). All in all, a good place, but not worth a trip into NYC just for this, but a good optionif looking for a fix for Gujurati food and are already in the area.
We recently visited Vatan, and while the overall experience was good, there were a few aspects that stood out. The Thali is priced at $50 per plate, which includes unlimited appetizers, main course, dessert, and masala chai. The waitress started off by mentioning the price, and I appreciated the transparency. The appetizers at Vatan have always been a favorite of mine, but this time, I found the Dhokla to be slightly less fresh, and the samosa wasn't as flavorful as before. However, the Bhaji was quite good. Surprisingly, we didn't opt for a second serving of the appetizers, which is unusual for us. Moving on to the main course, we noticed that the mango pulp/puree for the puri was missing, and overall, the main course didn't meet our expectations. On the bright side, the desserts were enjoyable, and we ended up getting a second serving. The ambiance and decor of the restaurant are pleasing, creating a comfortable dining atmosphere. However, I couldn't help but notice a decline in food quality compared to my previous visits. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the desserts this time. What truly impressed us was the excellent service provided by our waitress. She was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. Her professionalism and personal touch added to the overall dining experience and made it memorable. Here are few pictures.
Vatan is a vegetarian, all you can eat Indian restaurant... The food was good, authentic and simple. The appetizer and mains all came as an assortment of veggie dishes with an array of bread and flatbreads. Besides the food the atmosphere is fun, it seemed to me that it would be a good place to host informal events. The room is great and there is also a more private balcony inside. All in all I would definitely come back..
I really enjoyed the all you can eat Thali meal here. The staff was also very accommodating considering we didn't have a reservation and they got us in relatively quickly, though the food still took a long time since they were full. The nice thing is that you get a little bit of everything here. So many vegetarian appetizers and so many vegetarian main dishes and even 4 or 5 dessert options. And you can ask for seconds for anything. I'm usually not a fan of deal, but here the deal was so delicious when mixed with a little khitchri that I had to get seconds. Absolutely delicious.
Vatan is a wonderful vegetarian place! The chapatis taste just like home, and the servers were really kind and attentive. They serve buffet-style rather than individual items, but I actually loved it so many dishes to try and everything was flavorful. Definitely a great spot if you enjoy authentic vegetarian food.
We came here to celebrate a birthday. We picked this place because we heard a lot of good things about it. Let's start with the ambiance. It is excellent. Good for groups. Relaxed spacious atmosphere. The service, while not rude, was not particularly warm as others have mentioned here. The service was quick though. In fact, everything felt a wee bit rushed. They asked to clear the trays while some of us were still eating for both courses. They asked maybe once during the meal if there was anything else we wanted. For dessert, the impression was that you can have only one or the other. In reality, nothing about the meal felt like it was all you can eat. The check was dropped off swiftly, while still eating, of course. However, id say the food was good. There's a good variety on each thali so there's bound to be something you'd like. We didn't come on a busy night, nor was it near closing time. So I don't know why they were in such a hurry. Maybe all the reviews gave me too high of expectations?? I'm not sure if this is going to be a repeat for me.
Great appetizer selections, good main course varieties, could be more dessert options.

The thali is overpriced and not worth it . The food taste is less than average . Only the ambience is good . Won't recommend this restaurant to anyone.

If you are interested in getting a food coma, then @vatannyc is a good option for you😂 With $45 per person, you can get an all you can eat experience that includes starters, mains, and desserts. The service is great, and they serve you a full plate for each part of the course, and you can choose all or specific items to have more until you’re satisfied!
Extremely expensive for what is offered. Selection is limited and most appetizers cost more. 80$ for all you can eat vegetarian only open at night is steep especially for Murray hill where there ar…
overrated. Used to be awesome years ago. Now the items are bland and don't taste elevated in any way, and the service is just ok, nothing special. You can get better food at a number of places, and…
Not a great food as it is priced. They have a good ambience but I am a person who loves the food taste more when I am paying high at the restaurant.
it's vegetarian, "quasi all you can eat"\n\n$45 per person plus tax and tip which is pre-determined $13, totaling $58 per person. Your drinks are extra cost.\n\nFood is about C to a B-\nAmbiance A-…

Food no doubt is good and tasty. Gives you small portion of everything and you can ask more that way it's less wastage. Now service quality isn't that good and that's why 3 star. It felt like they…
The price is 45 and not 32 any more like mentioned in TripAdvisor. Food taste is not that authentic or that tasty either. Muthia was really bad. I like ragda pattis. And mirchi bhajji. It's all yo…
If you are looking for authentic Indian food, or even just good Indian food, this is not it. The dishes are bland and forgettable. The batatavada and the mirchi bhajiya were good in the appetizer thali. None of the dishes in the entree thali were good, it tasted like pre-made, frozen meals. We were all highly disappointed. The malai ice cream was good in the dessert thali. Ambience is nice and service was meh. For the price they charge, no justification for this quality of food or service. I recommend anyone that enjoys Indian cuisine to skip it entirely. NYC has countless better Indian food to offer.
Poor behaviour and terrible service. The food was meh. They tried a very hard upsell on liquor and were disappointed that we didn't take them up on it
Tacky ambience. Sub-optimal food filled with baking soda to fill you up, and chapatis layered with oil instead of ghee and Gulaab jaamun made with oil/vanaspati. A good Gujarati restaurant back hom…
We liked the ambience and food but the service was poor and bowls in which food is served were too tiny. Portion size of food served is small. It would hold just 3 teaspoons of vegetables. I unders…
Had heard a lot about this place and called them on a recent trip to NYC. The place opens for dinner at 5 PM so we called them at that time while driving to make a reservation for 5:20 PM. Called t…
The staff was very rude. We had 2 young kids who are not interested in the thali. We were forced to pay the full price of the thali when the kids did not even eat much. We also ordered a bottle of Malbec which seemed kind of spoiled. They did not even offer to exchange to another bottle when told about it
I was quite disappointed with the pav bhaji. The taste was bland, there was hardly any salt, and the spices were extremely mild. The butter used didn’t seem to be of good quality, which affected the overall flavor. It simply wasn’t worth the money. I used to eat their tehri and golgappa, which were good in taste, but I would not recommend trying their pav bhaji.
I wish I can give 0 rating. I went to Vatan expecting an authentic Gujarati thali experience, but the overall value and pricing structure made the experience disappointing. The base price of the thali itself is already very high at $45 per person, which is significantly above what a traditional Gujarati thali typically costs, even in major cities. What makes it more frustrating is that this is not the final price. On top of that, the restaurant adds an 18% “operational/service charge per plate”, and then tax is applied afterward. By the time everything is added, the total comes out to an amount that feels completely disproportionate to what is being offered. Gujarati thali is traditionally known as a simple, wholesome, and abundant meal, rooted in home-style cooking and value. While Vatan does present the food in a traditional format and the concept itself is interesting, the pricing completely breaks the spirit of what a thali represents. At this price point, one expects either exceptional luxury, premium ingredients, or a truly standout culinary experience — and this does not feel like that. The additional operational charge also feels poorly justified. If service and operational costs are part of running the restaurant, they should be transparently reflected in the menu price rather than added later in a way that feels unexpected and excessive. Seeing a mandatory 18% charge before tax makes the bill feel inflated and leaves a sour impression, regardless of the food quality. Overall, while the idea of showcasing regional Indian cuisine is appreciated, the cost-to-value ratio is extremely weak. For the same total amount, you can enjoy multiple high-quality Indian meals elsewhere, including Gujarati food, without hidden or layered charges. This restaurant may appeal to tourists or first-time visitors curious about the concept, but for anyone familiar with Gujarati cuisine or looking for fair value, the pricing structure makes it hard to recommend.
