Champa Garden Oakland Reviews
This place is my favorite Thai in The Bay area, if not the entire country. We moved to Hawaii and are here for the holidays and, oh, have we missed it so! My daughter gave it a 38 star review! Drunken noodles is my absolute favorite and the papaya salad is to fie for! But everything in the menus is fantastic! So absolutely delish!!!!!!
I've been searching for years for a really good Thai restaurant and I believe that I found a good spot. I loved the Angel Wings and the Basil fried rice. I was very skeptical of the rice because it was wet with sauce which usually is not a good sign for me but the rice was delicious with a nice smokey flavor to it. And I can't remember the name of it, but i drank a pretty good beer as well. Excellent
DEE-LICIOUS YELLOW CURRY. I asked for mushrooms and shrimp to be added.
Four of us split an amazing family style meal (rice ball salad, roasted duck larp, the #27 noodle soup, pineapple fried rice, and mango sticky rice) and our bill came to just $54. The rice ball salad and mango sticky rice were by far the standout items, but everything was delicious. I've heard the wait can be bad, but we were seated immediately at 7:00 on a weekday. Great place to bring people who want to try something new!
Super yummy, great staff! A little rundown, and out dated. The food was all very good. We had Pineapple paradise, Tom Ka, Pad see ew, the Champa sampler and angel wings. This was for a party of four old men who can eat! and we had leftovers. ( Not allot but for us, any leftovers is like a Christmas miracle. )
My greatest experience multiple times with authentic Lao Thai food. The pad tai is amazing and genuinely priced for the serving and addictive taste. This has been my goto for Thai! Once I made a mistake by trying another one in the Bay Area and I won't make it again! When I think Thai, I think Champa Garden.
Great food at a nice price! Location requires a car or motor bike, but it's not too remote The people are friendly, efficient and the place is cozy & clean. It's as good now as it was in '09 when I last ate there!
I've had Champa Garden a few times and was surprised my review isn't up (I had one before). My favorite dish is probably their Nam Kaow. Fried Rice ball salad... the crunchy rice is just done so well. Fresh spring roll, chicken Satay and Lao Sausages are all great too. Price is good. Staff is friendly. Service seems to be good (depending on how busy). Before the pandemic, the times I came here it was busy. Of course everything is kinda weird with business somewhat opened and regulations. I did eat inside this past Friday night. Parking has always been an issue for me since it is kinda in a residential area, but I was able to park up the street.
Loved this restaurant! Quality food, great flavor and decent prices. We ordered the Tom yum soup, red curry and basil fried rice 10/10! Highly recommend! 😋
I had the house special on 04.06.24, catfish with eggplant and peppers with house sauce. The fish was fried and soaking up the incredible sauce that I will never stop thinking about it. The peppers are fresh and crunchy. The eggplant melting in the sauce to soak up the unexpected mint. Amazing. Thank you.
Born and raised vegetarian.. this place is perfect. 👌🏽it’s family owned and run which makes the food that much better. This is one of few places where I’m not afraid to try something new every time I come. I’ve been impressed every time.
Two separate visits - delicious each time. First tried a noodle soup, next a pan-fried dish. There are a lot of food options to picking two was enjoyably difficult and I doubt I’d have been disappointed with any of the choices. Orders were done fast, veggies were fresh and prepared perfectly, and the wait staff were personable and despite probably serving over 100 people each day, they recognize me each time I go in and remember my order when I’ve done pick-up. Great, comfortable, well-priced dinner spot.
I LOVE THEIR PAD THAI SOOOOO MUCH! It's juicy and tangy and delicious. I also love their appetizer sampler! If you don't want to get the entire sampler, the dish I'd recommend from the items would be the crispy rice salad for a dish or appetizer!
Let's just say that they're popular for good reason. Excellent all across. Our server had jokes and was very knowledgeable of the dishes. We closed the place down, yet the staff all went about their closing/cleaning procedures and had no issue with us finishing up. Highly recommended, but prepare for a short wait.
We ordered Larp (Lao style), Kaow Piak Noodle Soup and Pad Ped Duck (Duck curry with eggplants). The servers were helpful with their recommendations and even offered to make certain dishes vegetarian. Everything was delicious and the service was great. The Thai tea was sweeter than I expected and made for an excellent dessert. I would gladly eat here again anytime I am in the area.
I've always loved Champa but my experience last night took the cake. I was meeting up there with a friend from the city only to find they were closed on Monday night, although Google said they were open. Apparently they close every 3rd Monday for cleaning. The owner saw me looking disappointed and invited me in for a meal on the house. My friend arrived and we enjoyed our custom-made meal together for about an hour with the staff keeping the lights on just for us. Very generous, and as always, the food was delicious!
This place can get crowded fast so I recommend calling first to see if there's seating. Parking will be tricky but worth it. My suggestion if you haven't had this style of food is to order the "Sample Platter" plus either a soup or curry and that will give two people more than enough food and a basic idea of flavors. Then branch out on the next visit. I haven't had a bad meal here. The flavors are both familiar and unique at the same time. Yummmmm
We live Champa gardens so much! A little bit secret, hiding back from n the neighborhood. They make the most delicious food. Truly every dish is excellent. The sausages are super great, get those, the curries are excellent, the veggies are fresh. Have a a cold beer with some hot food. They are small so it can get pretty busy. You can also do orders to go. Because it's in a neighborhood, parking can be difficult at dinner. The prices are also very reasonable, especially for the quality. Another Oakland gem! The only thing that is bad, is they don't make the peppermint beef anymore.
I love eating at Champa Garden. By no means have I tried everything, but I've never been disappointed with anything I've tried. I recommend the sampler; I love variety. The last time I went, we also got the catfish curry (pla panang), which was good. I've also enjoyed the eggplant with basil, all of the different fried rice dishes, the noodle dishes (pad thai, pad see ewe, etc.) I've been eating here soon after they've opened and I recommend them so they can continue to stay in business. Btw, it can get busy, so expect that.
I know people from out of town who like to eat here. It's usually full.
This place rocks. Best Panang Curry I’ve had in a long time.
Did take out & delivery as parking is near impossible. Food is great!
Excellent food and friendly service. My only "complaint" would be that the portions are so large/generous!
Got Champa fried rice. Everything was on point. Cooked perfectly. Seasoned perfectly and well balanced flavors.
I was fully satisfied. Huge portions fair prices for sure! With exception to the mango sticky rice.. which was actually fabulous, tasted great but, it was $9.. a fair price comparable to the rest of the menu would be maybe 6.95 for the mango sticky rice. But, full stars bc it was still great.. Even the thai iced tea, tasted great, & was only $4/each. I'll definitely be back!
The family that runs this neighborhood gem are so warm and welcoming, and their food is so fresh and solid and obviously made and served with pride. Really local vibe like many of their customers walked here from home. Old folks, families, teens on a date, and everyone in between. Not trying to be fancy, but quality above expectations and very reasonable. Everything's good here.
I believe that this is THE BEST green curry I have ever had in my life. When I eat Thai, I always order it because it is my favorite dish- and I thought I knew what good green curry was. Well, I didn’t- and I felt like such an idiot for not finding this place over the years. They should applaud the chefs as they walk into work every day…there should be some sort of award for this place. As for the rest of the food, every curry offered is otherworldly. The Thai & Laotian dishes are equal, if not better than the best Thai restaurants. The price for these dishes is jaw dropping considering the expertise and care- there are so many restaurants that charge more and give you less with a bad attitude. Not this place. This is in my holy grail of Oakland restaurants.
Great Lap Thai Viet place. Very authentic food with flavors that excite your tongue.
Love this place for years. Great ppl and food. A neighborhood gem!!!!
Very cute small restaurant with great authentic Thai food. Lots of options available dine in or takeout.
Food here is always bomb!! Anything you get will be amazing! I love their Champa Sampler, Chicken Satay, Khao Soi, any Fried Rice dish, their Yellow Curry, Pad Kee Mao, Pad See Ew, Pad Thai, Lat Na, their Eggplant or Basil Stir Fry, and don’t forget the Thai Tea! Staff is super friendly and always accommodating as well. When it can get super packed and busy especially around dinner time, I recommend calling in and getting your order to-go, they’re able to quickly prepare it even during the rush hours.
I don't know how this only has 4.5 stars, it's definitely a 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
It's was my first time eating Thai food. It was delicious!
The Champa Sampler is the best thing if eaten in SF!! It’s a bit pricey but easily can feed 2-3 as an app. The Lao Sausage was spicy, flavorful, and had chunky texture-very different. The crispy rice salad was my favorite, it was packed with flavor and texture. All wrapped in a lettuce wrap with herbs and fish sauce. Amazing!
Incredible local Lao/Thai staple. My go to for "sick-soup" (spicy Tom yum.)
What can I say that hasn’t already been said? It’s all delicious and I can’t help but order too much every time. So many vegan & vegetarian options! The takeout portions are good sizes, though some dishes don’t hold up as well and really need to be eaten in person, like the catfish is 10/10 but I wouldn’t recommend it to go. I love dining in here with 3-4 people and sharing family style. The only time I regretted my order was when I got “spicy” drunken noodles since “mild” hadn’t been hitting. Thankfully that was to go so the staff didn’t have to watch me cry my way through my whole bowl.
I had pinned this place from yelp a couple weeks ago and just got to try it out last weekend. Literally 10min away from Lake Merritt hidden in a residential neighborhood in Oakland. We went there at opening dinner time just after 5 and let me tell you, we were surprised the place was packed!!! We knew then the place was THAT good!!! The menu was full of choices - we opted for the fresh shrimp rolls with garlic sauce, the egg fried rice and catfish curry. Oh my God!!! The portions were great and we thought we would have to take leftovers home - boy were we wrong! The food was so amazing we overate! Too Good! Hadn't had such an amazing food experience in a long time. Thumbs up for the great flavors and addicted taste! Champa Garden we will be back in no time!
Hidden gem of Oakland. It’s intimate, homey and incredibly delicious. The glittering string lights out front clued me in to the magic waiting inside. There can be a wait, but it’s worth it. Food is authentic and interesting—get the angel wings for an explosion of gluttony—but stay for everything else. It’s very reasonably priced too, especially given that I usually leave with lots of leftovers.
Very high quality, delicious food, and fantastic service provided even during a busy hour. The takeout was doing numbers too. Thank you Wayland and team!
This place is so delicious. The flavors are wonderful in every bite! Must get the Champa Sampler. We got that and a duck curry. That was more than enough food for two people. The portions and prices are really good. I can't wait to go back. We went on a Friday night, the wait wasn't too bad an hour before closing.
Love the food over here. It's Lao/Thai cuisine. Must get dish is Champa Sampler (sausage, rice salad, egg roll, & noodle) to eat with lettuce. Very affordable price even though the restaurant increased a bit due to inflation but still cheaper than SF. My other favorite dish is pad see ew, amazingly tasty. Easy to find parking.
This nondescript Laotian corner eatery is clearly doing something right. Stepped in on a Sunday at 5:30pm, with every table taken and a list of neighborhood regulars waiting to get their fill. Friendly and attentive service. The vegetable clay pot with silver noodles and a shrimp add on, served in a tasty and comforting ginger sauce. Lue Kaow Soy #30, umami heaven: a noodle soup with lightly pungent, fermented bean broth (think miso), served with bean sprouts, topped with sliced chicken and ground pork. Season to your personal taste, with wide assortment spice tray on every table. Peanuts key. Champs Sampler, a must when eating as a party. All the stars of the appetizer menu present: herbaceous Lao sausage, crispy rice ball salad, and fried spring rolls served with a heaping portion of lettuce wraps, rice noodles and fresh herbs.
came here on a saturday night at 6:30pm without a reservation with a large party (7) and was seated after ~30 minutes, i lost track of how long it actually took. it was pretty cozy and the tables are not huge so a party of 7 was almost pushing it. from the get-go, it was really popular by the looks of all of their takeout orders! there were 5-6 people waiting on takeout orders while there were probably 6 bags already waiting. the food is remarkably affordable, we ordered two appetizer samplers, 6 entrees, and 2 mango sticky rices. we were stuffed and had leftovers! all for about $25 per person WITH tip! a steal!! food is delicious and fresh, my favorites were the sampler, duck curry, and champa fried rice. the dessert was also delicious! only complaint was the crispy pork belly was most chinese broccoli with some slices of pork belly. otherwise, would definitely order from here again, takeout or dine in!
I had been dying to try Lao food and this place was a great place to try it for the first time! I got the chicken Khao Piek, which is a rice noodle dish similar to Bánh Canh for those familiar to Vietnamese food. Although I was a little saddened by the fact that there was no pork blood cubes in the dish, I really enjoyed it anyway with a good amount of chili oil. Khaopoon curry noodle was also tasty. Lovely servers and cozy atmosphere. Nice and reasonable prices, as well. Def plan on coming here again!
Amazing Thai & Laotian food at the right price point and flavor! The restaurant is quite busy so be ready to wait a bit. The food is definitely worth the wait. I particularly like the boat of Champa samplers and the rice noodle soup (Kao Piek). The duck curry with eggplant is not bad at all. I would love to come back and explore more in the menu!
We purchased the Basil Fried Rice, with beef, Pumpkin Curry with chicken, and the House Special which is fried catfish with eggplant, basil, and bell pepper in their house special sauce. Everything was delicious, and the service exceptional. Our water glasses we're not allowed to be empty. The dining room is simple. The only things I would've wanted different is for the Pumpkin to be a bit softer in the curry, and the beef softer and seasoned in the rice, but everything was still good, prices reasonable, and when I'm in Oakland I would definitely visit again.
I love to take out of town visitors to Champa Garden. A trip here is a trip off the beaten path, away from the trendy parts of town, a trip to East Oakland, out of a lot of people's comfort zones. What kind of cuisine is it?? Is it Thai? Is it Lao? Is it Tai Lue? It's all of the above -- a cultural hodgepodge, hard to pigeonhole like the City itself. To further extend the metaphor, like Oakland, the flavors of Champa Garden are funky & fresh! The tables are covered in condiments inviting you to further customize these mashed up dishes. I haven't had anything I didn't like here. But don't miss the rice ball salad, or the Lao sausage. My son swears by their fried rice. Come take a trip to the avenues, be patient if you arrive at 7pm, over order (it's not expensive), and bring a few friends.
Great service, even better food at affordable prices. Simply the best. Shoutout to OG uncle that services the tables. I will never be dehydrated when he’s on shift. Felt very taken care of while dining in.
Hands down, the best flavors you’ll ever have. The Curry's are amazing and I come here every chance I get. My #1 choice for eating out —- 9/13/23 The duck curry with eggplant is mouthwatering, the pad se-ew is perfection, sticky rice is great and the Thai tea is magical. I have been coming here for years, with my family, and on solo dinner dates with myself. This is the go to place for flavorful Thai food in Oakland. Not to mention the space is beautifully decorated, clean and welcoming atmosphere. Shout out to the kitchen chefs and the great service from the servers. I’m a forever customer :0) — 9/20/23 Returned two weeks in a row, ordered the pumpkin curry, pad Thai, brown rice, and a Thai tea. Will say that the flavors were more potent with last weeks visit, but still good.
Was looking for a comforting meal around ~20 drive from Berkeley and didn’t want to spend more than $20. This homey neighborhood spot fit the bill exactly! Service was very friendly and fast. Food was delicious and well priced. The side of rice was perfectly portioned. Also had a nice array of sauces and condiments for those who like a little spice. Was delighted to see tamarind mix and pickled Serranos! We got the yellow curry and the pad see ew as well as the calamari. I would recommend eating the calamari first because it’s not as good when it’s cold. Also I got an empty calamari but it was prob a mistake. My one complaint was the soy sauce; I have a sneaking suspicion it was watered down, but then again my taste buds are particularly attuned to soy sauce quality.
Nestled in a highly residential neighborhood in Oakland, Champa Garden is a great local spot with friendly service, great food, and reasonable prices. The place has very homey decor and vibes, and the staff is very attentive and good at making you feel at home. Each of the items we ordered was great. The iced tea was among the most flavorful I’ve had. The basil fried rice is a staple. The spring rolls are fun to wrap and eat. The fish was brilliantly seasoned. Can’t wait to go back!
Champa is delicious! Since it’s a popular, small neighborhood place you need to know the following: Expect a 30-60 minute wait at dinner time. Yes, late in the service if it’s crazy busy the food quality is definitely less. For example; your curry will be mostly gravy and onions. (Sorry guys, it’s true!) Get the fried spring rolls!!! Just plan your visit a little and you’re in for a treat! It’s seriously delicious, spicy, flavorful food. There’s a reason the wait is long, it’s worth it!
Amazing food! Fresh! The flavor is 5 star. Also, very accommodating to vegans. They know the details of what has animal products like the fish and oyster sauce. I hope they will keep expanding their vegan options. The only reason I'm docking one star: I HOPE THEY SEE THIS I hope they will start to ask if people want plastic utensils. I got them automatically and they went unused, straight in the landfill - plastic utensils cannot be recycled. Most plastic doesn't get recycled even if you throw it in the right bin. For that reason I hope Champa Gardens will consider transitioning into biodegradable/paper to-go containers. Other than that, wonderful restaurant.
This is hands down my favorite Lai/Thai place in Oakland. The food is soooo very delicious and the portions are great. The staff is friendly and accommodating. We were a big group and we did family style. We are all full and ended up paying far less than I would have thought for such a large group. We loved the sampler player, which is a must. The green curry with duck is also out of this world. The drunken noodles were also delicious. They have a choice of meat for everything which makes things a lot easier. The Tom Kha was also very delicious. This place is worth the wait. Can't wait to go back again.
Usually - almost always bomb, the last hour of Saturday night service left me underwhelmed. I’ve had great service on way busier nights. I’ve had food SO good, I lick the plate clean. I think everyone was sleepy and/or ready to go home.
Food was fast but a little lukewarm. Taste was great though and prices are very good. Street parking.
When I moved here in 2017, this place was touted as "bomb" to me. I excitedly became a patron (I used to live walking distance to here). However, after dining here after being not coming here since the pandemic, the food quality and service fell off a lot. I don't know if it has the same owners or what, but it's not the Champa I remember pre-pandemic. There are better Thai/Lao options in the east Bay.
Fantastic neighborhood Laotian spot in Oakland. There are so many good things to order but we always come back to the Crispy Pork Belly with Broccoli and House Sauce. Service is attentive and the staff is nice. Parking at peak times for dinner can be tough since it’s a neighborhood joint but you’ll find something.
Food was good. Love the crunchy fried rice! Definitely would come back. Staff are awesome 👌
Staff were kind and very happy to explain everything on the menu. Pad Thai was a bit too sweet for my liking, but the salads, platter, and curry was nice! Thai tea was authentic and well-spiced, although not for those who don't have a sweet tooth. Our company also recommended the mango sticky rice!
Review is for takeout via GrubHub. 5/5, they had the order ready early and handled several orders perfectly. They're very nut allergy friendly for a Thai restaurant! I added notes to my order and everything turned out fine. Pad See-Ew (Duck) (4/5): The noodles and vegetables were very tasty, but there was very little duck in the dish. Fried Wrapped Spring Roll (3/5): I could see this being very good in person, but in a to-go order it gets too soggy. I love that they serve it with vegetables and vermicelli to make small wraps. Larp Salad (4/5): Very tasty for a "salad". The lime adds a nice kick and the portions are very sharable. Lue's Noodle Soup (4/5): Nice kick to this, the noodles were very tasty in the soup. We added beansprouts for some extra texture. Overall, my advice is to try to be on time because I can imagine that their dishes are delicious fresh, but the fried dishes don't travel too well.
Quaint family owned restaurant with yummy food. Good options for vegetarians and server was good about asking whether fish/ oyster sauce was ok or not which was much appreciated. Happened to be in Oakland for last weekend of Glowfari at the Zoo. Didnt snack in the park so I could enjoy a proper meal at Champa, have not been there in 7years or so it was a meal I was really looking forward to. The portions are good for the price which is super helpful in these times of inflation. I was shocked when I paid the bill and it was under $75 including tax and tip. We had 2 appetizers, soup and an entree. It was 2 in my party but was super happy to enjoy variety without breaking the bank and having leftovers to enjoy later in the week. I remember the food being more flavorful back in the day but it was still delicious and would go back if I am in the east bay.
We got take out. The food was fairly good but nothing special. Not the best Thai we've had and probably wouldn't return. The champa fried rice sounded interesting but was disappointing. Pad se ew and drunken noodles were pretty good. The champa appetizer sampler was different..and was pretty good though the Chiun was dry. Overall, definitely worth a try.
Very middle of the road Thai food spot. Won’t be disappointed but you won’t leave craving more. Their fresh veggie spring rolls are gigantic, but almost entirely lettuce. Pad kea mow is quite flavorful, I personally didn’t like how soggy the noodles were. Would come back one more time to try some other items on the menu and discover what the hype is about.
Looks like a hole in the wall 😅 but the inside is nice. Like the atmosphere. Food wasn't bad. Sharable dishes. Only 3 stars because I was still hungry after 😅😆 so if you have an appetite you'll have to get more than one dish 🍜🍚
Ordered takeout for the first time since Neecha was closed on Black Friday. I had heard great things about Champa Garden but was definitely disappointed. The yellow curry flavor was fine but nothing special. It felt like the majority of the time I was chewing through large, bland chunks of tofu and potato. My dad thought his spring rolls and fried rice were OK but didn’t finish either. Nothing about it was compelling enough for me to come back again.
This place has definitely gained popularity since we’ve moved here four years ago. It’s always busy and fortunately their take out ordering is pretty quick. But if they’re really busy it’s also hard to get them to answer the phone because it’s always busy. For vegetarians, the options are pretty good, most things can be made with tofu. The Thai fried rice is really good but sometimes it’s inconsistent with flavor. Other favorites Pad Thai & Pad Se-Ew noodles.
I’m glad the staff are friendly and welcoming. Parking is very difficult and the food actually doesn’t have a lot of flavor, more so tastes like grease ( pineapple fried rice , pad prik king, won ton soup) For some reason I’d still be willing to give it another try and maybe go with something different.
I used to frequent this place when I lived in the Bay Area, so when I have the chance to go back, I took my friends here. We waited over 40 min for 3 people on a Friday night. Unfortunately, most of our dishes fell flat - it was on the bland side and nothing spectacular. Even the sampler dish was just ok - nam kaow rice was not crispy enough nor was it well seasoned. The only dish we enjoyed was the wonton soup , which is the most flavorful. For comparison, Night and Song market in LA, or Sticky Rice Lao street food in Orlando, FL, blows this place out of the water. It definitely does not deserve the recognition it deserves. Or perhaps its quality has changed since I visited over 10 years ago. However, we did randomly run into an old friend we haven’t seen in 25 years here, so that was super cool.
The food was okay but certainly not inspired, I could have done better. The service was efficient and acceptable but a bit bored and grudging. The atmosphere is poor. Crowded, not well decorated but not awful either. If you're shooting for good enough, this comes close.
Please notify the food deliverer to handle with care or your service. Please cover the lid tightly; it has spilled more than three times every time i order from Champa Garden.
Ordered online through their website. Google maps said they were open. Drove over to pick it up and they were closed.
