Tacos de comal Oaxaca Reviews
There’s a reason the line is long. Just wait in it, order some stuff, enjoy the low prices, then stand there and gobble up the goodness. I had a quesadilla with chorizo and an empanada de amarillo. Both were fantastic but the empanada de amarillo was outstanding. A little messy, but worth it. Super nice folks working there too.
The food was okay. I ordered the mushroom dish without cheese, and while it was decent, I really think adding a vegan cheese option would make a big difference so us vegans don’t miss out. With vegan cheese, I’m sure it would taste even better! I’ll definitely come back because I want to try their other vegetarian options without cheese. You can tell this place is popular — lots of people were eating here.
The hype is legit, mi amigos. This is one time where the emperor DOES have a new suit--and only the special can appreciate it. I ate here before I knew they were featured in the Netflix series, so my mind being blown was wholly due to the amazing food. Let's start with the fact that the sweet abuelas make all their tortillas from scratch. Rolling, kneading, everything ground and processed the way nature intended. So chewy, so corny, so perfect. Then there's the tacos themselves. In runner-up, we have the delicious Flor de Calabaza (y Champiñón) con Quesillo, probably the most perfect veg taco ever created. Tied with that is the Chile Relleno, bursting with capsaicin and flavor. And if I hadn't returned to the same stall that same evening, I would already have been satisfied. But I did come back for their evening menu, and that's when I had the greatest taco I'll probably ever had on this earth: Empanada de Amarillo con Pollo. Picture the fluffiest tortilla you've ever had enclosing the most savory, umami salsa amarillo you can imagine. Add to that juicy--and I cannot emphasize enough, JUICY--strips of chicken. And top it all with the greatest herb Americans have never heard of: hoja santa (holy herb). I could write sonnets about how much I love hoja santa, but then this review would be a tome. Let's just say that the combination of their amarillo, pollo and hoja santa is the stuff of dreams--delicious, savory, lip-smacking dreams. I loved this taco so much, I went back for it again before leaving Oaxaca--and found to my delight that it's one of the items they offer during the day AND night. I think I ate about 5 in total. You don't want to know how often I fantasize about this taco now that I'm state-side. Pretty sure it would make the holy herb feel much less holy.
Amazing rolled tacos (tacos placeros) filled with beans, quesillos and other fillings of choice. My fav filling was chile relleno. The ladies roast the rolled tacos on comal to give the tortilla crispy texture. My husband’s favourite was salsa de chicarron. Memelas with quesillos are also a treat. You know the place is good because there are so many locals waiting for their food. We went back twice.
Terrific spot that I’ve visited more than any other Oaxaca food joint. Streetside food cart near Santo Domingo church has great Tylayudas for 120MNN. A must try when in Oaxaca, basically a huge quesadilla, one is enough to fill you for hours. Also great are Empanada de mole amarillo con flor de calabaza and Taco de chile relleno and memalitas. Closes mid afternoon and usually runs out of some stuff in the last hours.
Super popular with tourists, thankfully not too many people the day I came. I got chile relleno and mushroom tacos, could've done with more flavor for the mushroom. Also got an empanada with amarillo (yellow mole) with chicken - SUPER tasty flavor, really enjoyed that. The sauce is also quite liquidy. Everything made on the spot so it's hot, and there are three salsas you can add at your leisure. 30MXN each per taco, 60 MXN for the empanada.
Great place for morning tacos. It’s quite a busy place, but you won’t have to wait long for your order. We recommend the Tacos de Chili Relleno. Super tasty and a great way to start the day! Check out our channel for a full review of our experience: Hungry Two Travel.
Empanadas with the yellow stew and shredded chicken was yummy. The drinks could be colder as it was a scorching day (maybe ask for the bottles at the bottom of the ice box!). We paid 300 pesos in total for 4 empanadas and 3 drinks. Very limited seating so be prepared to perch in the corner and scoff your taco!
Olivia said it perfectly 2 reviews down. Don’t get the hype. Unfortunately, the tacos/quesadillas we had here were the worst of our 10 day trip in Mexico. Don’t want to hate but everything was flavorless/extremely bland. Even the salsas tasted like spiced water. No where to sit and the staff were pretty indifferent/inattentive to their customers. Many options nearby will leave you feeling far more satisfied.
Below average honestly. Think it’s a bit of hype surrounding this place / people being performative in the queue taking photos and filming TikToks. The food itself is super plain, simple and flavourless. Don’t want to be a hater on a family business here, but wanting to set the record straight and honest for my future amigos on the hunt for something delicious…
Pretty average if I’m honest. More hype than good food. Bland food that wasn’t even what we ordered. Had to return food twice and they were out of half of the ingredients and it was just on midday. We’ve eaten at taco stands throughout Mexico that were 10 x better than this one. Don’t believe the hype
We heard a lot about this place and happy to try. We ordered several tacos, but a man who charges the order said no more tacos, tlayudas only. We were happy to try that also, however we noticed that two tlayudas was already cooked and waiting. In the mean time they were cooking tacos too! We got our food, people who came after us they got theirs tacos. Tlayudas that we got very dry and has no flavor. It was a huge disappointment. And there is a serious hygiene problem too. I am not expecting a super clean place but what we saw was not ok.
