Ducks Breakaway Bar & Grill Orange Reviews
I'm going to write this in a moment moment type of review. At first trying to pile into this tiny little sliver of a restaurant with my extra baggage it was challenging but I managed to work my way around the back of the bar is on a great spot next to a window with ample seating. The beer arrived very quickly, I am super happy. And then this... the Angus burger with cheddar, bacon, avocado and sweet potato fries. And the service by Alicia was super duper!! Nuff said, it's great!
Great stop for an airport beer! Hope was a great bartender!
Jose, our server, was awesome! He found a high chair in the back for my daughter and he checked on us multiple times to make sure we had everything we needed. Thanks for suggesting the sweet potato fries and making my daughters day!
Loved the salad, it was a great size portion and there was plenty of shrimp. Their drinks are super pricey, though... So don't be alarmed if you walk out with an $16 tab for a double cocktail after the half-price 2nd shot
Had the Turkey Burger with Mango Salsa + Bacon. I was thoroughly surprised how good the turkey burger was! Really nice mouth-feel to it and very, very juicy! The mango salsa went really well with it, so I'd want to extra next time. They also give you plenty of fries that makes the airport prices (if I remember about $15 for the sandwich & fries, $2.5 for bacon) very much worth it. Service was pretty fast when I was there, but it wasn't so busy then, and I've definitely seen the place fill up at times of the day, so probably best to leave yourself some time to eat.
Amazing customer service! Good food with good views.
Food was great! Ordered a steak Ceasar 🥗 salad. Salad is great. They brought it out super quick. Only thing is maybe I'm a bit old school but I had to order through my phone once scanning the QR code. I guess for convenience it works. But then you have less waiters or waitresses. Kills jobs and tips. I mean hard to leave a tip when they only just drop off food and you have no other contact. If this continues we will end up with the robots that come to your table. Anyhow the food was good. I recommend this place.
Get the Hot Honey Flatbread and the Fajitas you wont be disappointed. I fly around to quite a few airports and this spot has some of the best food, service and vibe for an airport eatery. I highly recommend this spot!
I rarely take the time to review an airport restaurant, but I was really pleased with lunch here. It's so hard to find good fruit and veggie options at airports, but this was on point. I used the app to order and pay, and service was prompt and friendly.

Hope was the absolute best server I’ve ever had. I don’t know what you’re paying her but it should be more. Maybe she should train other servers. We were here for the Rose Bowl - go Hoosiers! - and weren’t looking to a long trip home. Hope made the first part of our journey feel welcoming and fun. Hoosier hospitality in Cali!
Very delicious breakfast. Also it’s nice that you seat yourself so there is no wait.

Recently visited this place, which is in John Wayne Airport. Got a window seat, where I was able to watch planes taking off and landing. Service was pretty good and reasonably quick. Ordered Chicken quesadilla, which was very tasty. Nice place to spend if you have extra time in the airport.
Bar/restaurant in Terminal C at Orange County/, John Wayne Airport. Friendly bartenders. Had the shrimp tacos that had just returned to the menu. Added some chipotle hot sauce and enjoyed them! Served street taco size. Tasty! Washed them down with an IPA and a shot of anejo tequila.
I always worry about places where you order via QR code. Usually the service is poor Before I could get my order placed the server asked me if I had any questions. I appreciate that. I placed my order online and it worked fine. The food was very good. I wanted to post a great review for the service. It is so rare these days. Thank you Patricia.
Great sports bar in the middle of the John Wayne airport. Doubles were half off the second shot. Which may not mean a lot when you’re at an airport bar, but it still FEELS like a deal. Didn’t grab food but everything thing that came out of the kitchen looked tasty.
Another day goes by, another airport, another burrito. So, in the right context of “airport burritos,” can they change your life? No. But as places to wait in airports go, this one does the job. I was able to find a seat and snagged a nice, comfortable booth in the back to hear the sweet sounds of jets and terminal announcements. Everything was clean, and the atmosphere friendly. Once I got my coffee, they kept it full, and the waitress was quick and polite. Their menu has alcohol, a good variety of food, and if you have some time to kill, this is a great choice. Don’t get me wrong—it’s airport food, and I only eat burritos. So it’s on par with that. Seating was open and the comfortable booths were tucked away in the back. The online ordering was easy, and whoever the waitress was did a great job with service. I’ll be stopping here again when I fly into town.
Food was great, you order through the QR Code on your table, only problem is that with bar seating on the perimeter of the restaurant there are not QR codes for every seat making you have to order in person which can be difficult with very busy servers. The Food took 20 minutes which was great and it was delicious for the price.
One of the best options at this airport. Ordering and payment is primarily done via the phone.
Food was good. Wish I could've ordered lunch bc I've been up since 6:30 but lunch isn't available until 10:30. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Was also aloud to sub out toast and potatoes for fruit and cottage cheese :)
Solid choice in a pinch. Probably the best the terminal has to offer in 2023. Decent pint, very prompt and friendly service and a great place to kill time.

Located in John Wayne Airport (Santa Ana/Orange County), I always seem to find a way to stop by the Breakaway Bar & Grill before my flight.. Here's what I've had from my last couple of visits in 2021 Spicy Wings- decent wings for an airport resto. Generous with the meat an pretty spicy sauce. If you're going carb free, the spicy wings will work for you.. Angus Burger- This is a pretty tasty cheeseburger served with skinny fries. They cooked it at a perfect medium rare for me. This was the perfect dish for me before I started downing IPAs and tequila to kill time... Speaking of which.. the draft beer and shot for me went like this: Goose IPA + Don Julio Blanco $18.49 THe entrees are in the $15-$17 range...pricey? Yes, but you already knew that because you're in the airport right? hehe I love how you seat yourself and servers always stopped by almost immediately after I sat down. They would check on me and were overall generally very friendly. There's a full bar and plenty of flat screen TVs throughout to kill time watching the game. I like sitting in the booths in the back to watch airplanes land and take off. =) This has always been a nice safe option for me whenever I'm at John Wayne Airport. Always use a designated pilot. Cheers!
We had some time before our flight boarded so we sat at the bar here. The bar tender was friendly and what you would expect from a normal bartender. We got everything we needed and he knew when to check on us. We got some local brews. We recommend the mango cart. We also got a shrimp flatbread to share. It comes with four pieces. It isn’t huge but it was enough to hit the spot before a flight. The menu isn’t expansive but there’s enough choices. We were there during playoff hockey so we got to watch some on the TV screens at the bar. We had 4 beers and a flatbread and somehow our bill came to $87. So be aware of those California Airport prices and get in the right mindset ahead of time so you aren’t shocked like I was when I got the bill. Was this meal worth $87? Absolutely not in the slightest. Take your $87 elsewhere and get more for your money. However we did enjoy the beers and flatbread that we had in the sports bar atmosphere, and was a great way to eat some time before our flight.
Had an angus burger with bacon... bacon was as hard as a rock, almost no flavor. Would not order that again. The service was pretty good though, and the views were nice as I had one of those booths that are next to the window facing the tarmac.
Service was good. Not a fan of the goat cheese in the omelette and the coffee was a little weak. Still, belly satisfied. Cottage / home fries and toast were good and filling.
Food was good. We had white chili nachos not enough chili for our taste. The burger was ok not great. The service was slow.
Bartender or barback on the right in black in the picture with the black facial hair. I would NOT recommend going to him. All I asked was a cup of Ice and he asked me to go to the bar......which is where I was at. He was pouring a beer at the time and I was more than willing to wait. Pure laziness and bad customer service.

I was waiting to board my flight at gate 19 which is right next to the restaurant. Previously I purchased a meal from McDonalds and could not find seating by the gate because the flight was full. I walked around to the Ducks Breakaway area to eat as there were plenty of seats available. After I sat down with my food I was confronted by a woman who seemed to be a manager asking if I wanted a menu. "No ma'am" was my response. Then she stated, "You know this is a dine in restaurant only?" I began to answer "No I didn't" but she began to walk away quickly. "Do I need to move?" I asked. She stopped and turned to say, "No, but if we get busy, we are going to move you." I proceeded to gather my things and leave anyway. This situation was an honest misunderstanding. I would have been happy to move for her if she would have simply asked. A little politeness would have been greatly appreciated instead of the condescending additude. I understand you have a business to run, but please be polite to people even if they are not your customers.
Terrible food, very low quality. Surprised that any restaurant associated with the Ducks would have frozen food quality.
The wings were really good , the burger was good but that's where it ends. Seat yourself, noone said hello, order off the qr code at the table , which is where the menu also is. Someone dropped off drinks, brought food and that was the extent of the service.no asking g how things are(thry were chatting in the back the entire time) , we had to ask for refills, noone cleared plates, I paid at the table online the same way we ordered and they recommended 18% tip. What a joke. I get more service at McDonald's. Maybe being an airport bar they don't have to care, who k ows.
A Monday afternoon about 5 pm. 4 bartenders, 4 wait staff on duty. Sign says to seat yourself, so I did. Waited 12 minutes before being acknowledged while a bartender walked right by me twice with no acknowledgement. After the 12 minutes, got a menu and a grumpy waitress, an older woman who said nothing after each “Thank you” I offered. After another 7 minutes, she returned for my order. Food and drink came out relatively quickly. Burger and fries were decent, on par with airport food expectations. I wasn’t in a hurry, but attentiveness is important to me in service-oriented environments.
If they ask you if you "have time", tell them you don't-otherwise, you'll be an afterthought to your server. Upon taking our drink order, it took about 25 minutes for the server to return with them. More long stretches followed between finishing our meal and bringing the check. Steak fajitas were okay. Angus burger and sweet potato fries were very tasty.
I've eaten here twice, first experience was okay. Second time the host stand said "seat yourself". All of the tables were dirty from the previous guests. We were forced to choose one, we sat for a long time before we had to ask if anyone was coming up help us or to clean the table. A waitress grabbed a dry paper towel and pushed the mess around 3/4 of the table and told us to use our phones to order. This has to be some kind of health code violation, I thought tables were supposed to be wiped down with a disinfectant solution. I used a Lysol wipe to clean our table, we ordered our food on our phones, it came, nobody checked on us again. Not sure what else this airport has to offer... Gotta be better than this though, just sanitary wise... I guess if you have time, keep walking.

Food and beer were great. Great experience until shift change where I tabbed out for the lady leaving. Nbd, left her a good tip. Then the next one ignored us for an hour then told us we needed to leave for others waiting. Guess they cut me off after two beers.
This burger was cold, underdone, and very plain. The sweet potato fries were okay. The service was okay.
Flatbread was not good. Stale bread and mostly cheese w a hint of marinara. Could not get a glass of water for the life of me.
We had a hamburger and chicken sandwich. Hamburger was the only edible food. Chicken was not good, fries terrible and the service was non-existent.
The price was way too much for the quality of the food. The food wasn’t good at all. The burgers taste dry & are chewy. Our salad had hairs in it. You have to order and pay on your phone & the website is hard to use. You can’t split the checks either. Not a good experience
Awful. Hospital food at best. Nothing good about the fajitas. The steak was stale, even the veggies had a bad taste to them. Way overpriced for portions/quality. $14 for about 4oz of a bloody mary. Do not come. Do not come. Do not come.
The older woman server was so rude, yelling at guests frustrated because the online ordering wasn’t working correctly. A table messed up their order next to us and instead of talking to them she rolled her eyes and walked away. I would eat anywhere else in the airport. Don’t give your money here.
Got the nachos. It costs $17. It was burnt on top and soggy on the bottom. Tried to eat it. Couldn’t get much of it down. Soft drinks were $4 with no refills. Very disappointed especially since it costs so much. “Waitress” never came back. Only brought the food and soft drink.
The app was continually spinning and kept making a broken symbol. After spending a half an hour there trying to order things that noone really wanted, we decided to leave and go down the terminal to Ruby's. The price ranking is based upon the menu. We only had and paid for drinks out of sheer frustration with the app and not being able to order like a normal restaurant (the waitress insisted that was the only way to order, apart from drinks, after all). Plus, why spend almost $20 per person on a meal (after taxes and tip it would be about that much) when noone was really digging what was on the menu.
Got the saddest $30 chicken sandwich I have ever seen. 0 out of 10. Chicken tastes like rubber
Carls jr is just steps away and actually serves good food and has good service and would have been cheaper. This place is Trash 🗑 😒 😪 😕 avoid at all cost
Holy smokes, the food is awful here. I stopped here before my flight to grab some breakfast. I think I would have been better off going hungry. I ordered the Steel Cut Oatmeal and a coffee. The oatmeal was served as a watery mess and ice cold. I ended up just eating the fruit and not messing with anything else because it was so off-putting. The coffee was served nice and hot but was unbelievably weak. Also want to note that the cream served with it is the pre-packaged stuff.

Bland tacos that taste like they were frozen. No cilantro. I'd never recommend them to anyone I know, and I'm not sure why the hostess recommends them to people as she must not have taste buds or has never eaten delicious tacos.or she recommended them based on the best thing on the menu. My friend got a spicy chicken sandwich and that was so-so but not for the premium price. On the plus side the fries were good. I'd recommend those. Overpriced. I'd recommend McDonald's or any other vendor in the airport over this place unless you're getting a beer/drinks and fries.
