Templo Del Sol

We've been eating at TdS for many, many years now, and it's always, to a single visit, delivered the best Mexican food not just north of the border, but perhaps south of it, too. Yes, they're always a bit understaffed, but they're friendly, the prices are good, but most importantly, the food is just perfect. Try the deep fried burritos (esp. the Burrito de Calabacitas), or, as my wife likes, the "Jonathan sampler" which delivers on all traditional Mexican culinary fronts.

twenty years ago I was a scientific instrument salesman responsible for UCR. My company would let me take my customers to any restaurant I wished but they all wanted to go here for $5 burritos. When Jack Lemon was filming a movie at the mission Inn in Riverside he ate lunch here almost every day. This place is incredible. I have traveled extensively in Mexico and love the place but the best burritos in the world are to be found at Templo del Sol in Riverside, CA.. For the first time in 15 years I stopped there today and it is every bit as good as it ever was. Try the Nopalitas Burrito, deep fried. Today the place was clean, the service fine and the food sublime. They have great guacamole.

Good food is fun but their sauces are to die for, from the shrimp omelette to the calbacitas with pork but save room for the apple burrito she's been making long before other places have. Oh just order any of her deserts 🤪

Albóndiga soup is just like mom's and the Templo special can feed two. The horchata is the best I've had in any restaurant. The staff is always friendly and they always remember me.

I was thinking "am I in another class,"! The place was retro golddigger and I was country club Corona with a lime. Our of this world original salsa and a boy waiter spun out of his mind on rec. D

Accidently stumbled across this place! Building is small and easy to drive past but boy are they worth finding! Food is cheap and delicious! If I want to go out to Mexican I always go here

Order from here through Door Dash all the time. I love the Calabacitas with beef SO much I've never ordered anything else. But my son loves everything he's ever had. Our favorite for dessert is the bunelos. Numm.

Very good Mexican restaurant. Big portions, tasty, and reasonably priced. Location tip: It's a bit hard to spot this place, as the trees obscure its signage. It's right across the street from IHOP, on University.. that should help you find it. Enjoy!

Excellent food... I was visiting the area and was looking for Mexican food. Restaurant was very clean and server was pleasant. The salsa is the best I've tasted. Burritos and rice are really good.

My parents started bringing here when I was a baby, and as long as they keep doing what they're doing we'll keep coming back. The food is delicious and there are some more traditional dishes in the menu like mole and albondigas that you don't always see in Mexican restaurants. Also I don't think the prices have changed a lot over the years because it's all really reasonably priced.

Fabulous green chili verde. Great beans and rice. Wonderful staff/owner. They need to get better or homemade tortilla chips. Basic store bought chips. Salsa was pretty good, I would go back again and again.

This is a terrific mom and pop place that is a Riverside staple. Great people. The food is like I would imagine mi Arbeulito in Guadalajara would feed the family at a celebration.

That's what I'm talking about!!! 😋pure and simple. My order was made to my taste, they suggested their house sauce for my huevos rancheros. For 30 yrs, every day or at least 4 times a week I eat my huevos rancheros the same way. The sauce was a surprise, not what I'm use to, but not bad at all either, something different. The customer service is off the chart, these ladies made me feel like home. But don't be fooled, these nice sweet ladies pack a punch with their salsa roja. Loved it!!!!

Bomb food, my family and I ordered different plates on the menu and it was all delicious. Also we loved the salsa. It's Homemade and really reminded me of my grandmas salsa.

My son, wife and me thoroughly loved this authentic Mexican restaurant in Riverside, as we were driving back from Lake Arrowhead towards Irvine. We weren’t entirely sure how good the place would be just based on their online recommendations, and especially since we don’t frequent dining in Riverside. Since the location is near the University of Riverside, we thought it would be a place for students. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of service, the charm of the place and of course, the food. Both my son and I ordered their special that includes simmering hot cheese enchilada, mouth-watering chili relleno, fresh vegetarian taco and tostada, house salad, along with delicious beans and rice all for just $9.99. Better bring a humongous appetite since they serve a lot of food... My wife asked for veggie quesadillas, custom-made as per her likes, that she completely devoured. We were quite blown away by what we experienced at this place, and are sure to visit it again when we go to Riverside.

Templo Del Sol is THE BEST Mexican food I’ve ever had! The Shrimp Burrito is out of the world and is to die for. Generous serving and very friendly staffs. Highly recommended!!

My favorite restaurant in Riverside. You gotta try the chile relleno sauce. It's like liquid crack. The best you will ever have in your life!!! I buy the sauce just to use at home. I love the people, the atmosphere and the remaining owner, Josie! Great place!!!!

Been coming here for over a year now, and the place is clean, food is outstanding, and the service is warm, friendly, and attentive. They never disappoint! It's like my grandmother is back in the kitchen cooking up all my favorites. The green chilaquiles are the best, and portions are big. Also good is the albondigas soup. Home cooking at its finest! They have two tvs, but the noise is kept at a minimum for your dining pleasure. I highly recommended Templo Del Sol!

I have lived in the university ave area for over 10 years and this was the first time eating here. I ordered the enchilada plate and it was absolutely delicious. My hubby ordered the hamburger and he said it was great too!! Try this place!!

I found this place just by searching on Google. I wanted it to be close to Riverside national cemetery where my father was having his service at. I contacted the owner Maria several weeks prior to see if she can accommodate a party at about 30. She had no problem. She even printed out mini menus with the items that I selected for the occasion. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Her staff is amazing. The food was great. No complaints whatsoever. Even with the large party that we had she was able to steal accommodate people coming in with phone orders, and other patrons. That tells me a lot about this little restaurant. If you’re ever in the Riverside area, I highly suggest you stop by for some great food at a great place. Thank you for helping me on a day full of emotions feel comfortable and at ease.

This is my second time coming in, the first time I was looking for a job (I’ve worked in kitchens for years) and discovered this place accidentally because it appeared on my maps- despite my never noticing this hidden gem even living only blocks away. The atmosphere is very comfortable, you feel right at home as soon as you take a seat. I’ve been helped by two women so far, both are very sweet and helpful. The staff is patient and happy to help you figure out what you’re likely to enjoy, I even requested an item that had apparently since been removed from the menu and was no longer available- but when I expressed that I was bummed to hear that because it sounded so good, they figured out a way to make it for me anyway. Everything is incredibly well-priced, especially for having a true “grandma’s kitchen” vibe to the restaurant as a whole. There are many items on the menu that I almost never see at Mexican restaurants in the area, including many soups, salads and even several desserts that each looked fantastic. I’ve decided to make an effort to come here to eat instead of the mostly generic food and atmosphere generally found in the area, I would highly recommend you do the same. The location makes the restaurant almost blend into the background and the surrounding area has many closed shops which doesn’t help it stand out as an open business with exceptional staff and service-which it most certainly is. Come check this place out, you won’t be disappointed.

We had not been here in over 10 years, but we talked about it often, so we finally made it back, and it was just as good as we remembered!!! We will be back. Pricing is really reasonable, portions are not too huge but enough to fill your belly.

This place is sort of hidden, more of a locals type of spot but all are welcomed. I started going here about four years ago. I went for taco tuesday once and was immediately hooked. Staff is great and always checking in on you. They have the best tacos dorados around but they have something that most restaurants around here do not have. Their enchiladas are hands down some of the best I've had in recent years! The sauce that comes over them with the melted cheese, is just phenomenal. They are piping hot so be careful when digging in!! They sell beer too!!

I have been going to Templo del Sol since I moved to Riverside about 10 years ago. This is where I go when I'm not in Mexico (which is often) and to me it's just like being in Mexico. I especially like the way they serve Albóndigas soup at the beginning of the meal. I have not been here for a while but the waitress would always remember us and verify that I wanted carnitas and jamaica (my usual). Some reviewers complained that the food is not authentic--well, the cuisine varies in different parts of Mexico so there are differences in the way a dish might be prepared. This is one of the very few restaurants that I actually enjoy giong to in Riverside.

It has been a household name for over 50 years in my home. My family and I love this spot so much. The chilaquiles are always on our meal ticket. Absolutely delicious food and incredible family service

A really descent place to go and enjoy some real custom made Mexican food. The employees are nice and take their time to prepare your meals; and is indeed worth the wait when it comes to enjoying the meals at a descent price.

This is a family owned restaurant, ran by some of the nicest people you will meet and the food has never been less than perfect. You will not regret visiting Templo Del Sol. This is my FAVORITE in town! I craved this frequently during both my pregnancies.. I love the salsa and the carnitas are very well prepared. I just wish they delivered! We would eat from here more often if they did!

Super sweet, family run restaurant. I love their chile verde and chile rellenos. They have great vegetarian options if you don't eat meat. I eat a ketogenic diet and I can eat here without destroying my macros, if you know what I mean.

Goos food. Place was clean and the staff was very nice. Only negative remarks would be that we had to wait over an hour for our food to arrive after ordering. They did have a large party in the restaurant at the same time.

This is a longtime restaurant in Riverside. Its pretty much remained the same, it doesn't have any surprises. Both the menu and dining area has remained the same--so your favorite food is probably what you remember--this is a good thing.

Their nopalitos and pork burrito was delicious but I think next time I will order it without the pork just the nopales, salsa and beans. Their horchata was good too. Their employees were very friendly. The only thing I didn't like was the wait to get our food. After we ordered we waited 50 minutes for our food. But other than that it was great.

The food here was good. The service and atmosphere were not good. They messed up our order a few times. They overcharge us. Could have used some music and better hospitality.

Honestly we've gone here a few times and always get some kind of soup (albondigas or caldo de res). This time we decided to also try some nachos locos, taquitos and enchiladas. Well I have to say the soups always hit the spot and worth 3 to 3 1/2 stars but the other items we tried were lacking real flavor and just fell flat; honestly if they hadn't been served at the same time I wouldn't think it came from the same kitchen. It seemed like the meat in the taquitos wasn't seasoned and the guac didn't help much either, we actually only ate one and left the other. Most of the flavor in the nachos came from the broiler as some of the cheese and chips got wonderfully browned; the chile verde/colorado were rather plain and needed help from the salsa. The enchiladas fell to the same culprit of having a bland sauce and again maybe the meat not being seasoned enough. Based on all the other reviews, maybe they just had an off day.

I really wanted to like this place. The people are unusually nice. The atmosphere is pleasant, although the location is a little dicey. I read other reviews before going, & a lot of people praised the food, but I'm sorry to say I just didn't like it. And I continued not liking it for many hours afterward.

It breaks my heart to leave a negative review... I really wanted to love this place. I've been 3 times now, always hoping to give them another shot because I love the history of this place, but they have unfortunately disappointed every time. The first time I came the food was just entirely flavorless. I tried again a year later (this was a few weeks ago). We picked up food to go and waited 20 minutes after our latest order estimate for it to be ready. I got pezole and it was pretty good. My partner got the templo special and they did not include two of his 4 items, the beans were rancid, and they charged us extra for salsa. Tonight I got pezole and the templo special again. It was a good thing i checked the order because one of my items was missing. They charged extra for salsa, which I just cannot understand. And again, the beans are rancid. I don't know if they're using expired lard or what, but beans should not taste sour. It's a bummer because beans are my favorite part of every meal. Again, the pezole was good. I think if I come here again I'll have to stick to pezole because everything else is pretty flavorless and mediocre. I don't know how so many people can say this is the best mexican food in riverside. I really wish it was, but it's not. Los jilbertos and tios tacos are consistently better, more flavorful, and more timely... and they don't charge for salsa.

I got takeout from here and the food was pretty lackluster. The enchilada was not very flavorful and the beans tasted like beer. The taco and the tostada were the best part and they tasted like Taco Bell. I also got agua de limon and it tasted like syrup. Perhaps I didn’t pick the best food on the menu but you would think they would put their more impressive dishes in a sampler meal.

My family and I came here wanting to try a new Mexican restaurant close to home. I was going off the reviews, so my expectations were a little high. My husband ordered the carne asada wet burrito and I ordered the fish plate. The burrito was sad. It only had carne asada inside (my husband doesn't like pico de gallo, so he omitted that from his burrito), sauce and cheese outside, and a small side of guac. No rice or beans in sight. I was under the impression that the fish I ordered was a mojarra frita, but it was just a small filet of fish with a side of rice and beans. No tortillas. The service was bare minimum. We were there for about an hour. Our server came to check on us 3 times during that hour. Never offered to refill our drinks or the chips and salsa. The ambiance was cozy. It looked like the place could hold a max of 50 people. This place wasn't my cup of tea, but I'm glad I tried it.

Beware folks I took me and my wife out for lunch last week at this restaurant I ordered a big burrito open it up to poor hot sauce all over it much to my surprise I counted six pieces of meat very small so I let them know about it and they told me that's how it is Anna brito you only get a couple pieces of meet not to mention the beans I ordered in the meat and didn't even get like I said folks beware spend your money this place is trash 🗑️👎👎

We just left this place and we will never go back. We were looking at the menu and a COCKROACH feel from the celing into my menu, I closed my menu and almost ran over my husband to get out of there, he didnt know what happened, I made him take me home to take a shower. I am stiil grossing out! We had been here before and thought the food was good, now I wonder what else I was eating YUCK!! I am so glad I had not ordered and my dinner was sitting in front of me or I would of been sick right there. I have recommended this place to so many people and I feel so bad now. When my husband went back in to tell them what had happened they just said "OH SORRY" How did they get an "A" rating from the health deparment? SO NASTY!!! :(

Id give it zero stars but it won't let me. My husband and I ate there. At first the food seems good. But after we start eating it was not. I got a templo house special. The tostada was something i could have gotten at taco bell. The hard shell taco i have had better from del taco. The meat didnt even taste like ground beef. The enchilada was ok and the chile relleno was greasy. I got a bite that felt like i swollowed a tsp of grease. My husband got the shrimp chile relleno and said it had a weird smell and taste Will never go again.... Made my baby sick for 2 days after eating there. Best thing we ordered? French fries for my toddlers

I visited this place on 3/5. When we asked the lady what kind of burritos did they had she told us "did you guys even checked out the menu". I found that to be very disrespectful. If a customer has a question simply answer. The reason why we ask her was because the menu was mostly in english and not everyone reads enligh. My accompanions only speak and read in spanish and for her to answer in that way was very unprofessional.

There was no one in the restaurant so service was quick. Although the cuisine is okay, it lacked on flavor. But as far as the way the employees are trained, my husbands hand got blistered because the lady forgot to mention the plate was hot. And I mean extremely hot. Not even a Sorry!!!

Food was just OK. For the price we paid we should of left full. Portions are great for an elderly home. A 8.99 bean and cheese burrito thats not even on a burrito size tortilla. I could of made these myself for a few bucks. For a table of 4 they give you about 24 corn chips thin and cold, for the one size soda it's 12oz if that, only one refill the same for the chips. They have a kid size burrito that left my 5 and 7 year old hungry they also finished in 3 minutes. Then started eating mine and my wife's. For over 40 bucks???? Rip-off PLACE!!!! We will Happily go up the street to our regular spot where I can get regular size food. A big basket of hot & thick corn chips a nice heavy burrito plus 5 grilled chicken tacos 2 large 40oz sodas for under 30 bucks. Perfect for a family of 4. I know times are hard for small businesses but they need to find a better way to do business so they can stay in business. Service was also lacking at this place. They get the 1 star for the A/C. I bet they don't care and we should be so lucky to eat them Rosarita's on a Stater bros tortilla. Hit up Dos Hermanas right down the street you'll leave full and with a smile. 😃 food even taste homemade at Dos Hermanas.

About 20 years ago I ordered and enjoyed best Chili Verde ever in fact it is reason I order this dish at other restaurants. My sister and I were looking for place to eat and thought try them again. I ordered Chili Verde combo and she had shredded beef taco and shredded beef enchilada combo. Chili Verde had so little meat that I needed a strainer to find any and the sauce was unlike any I had on this dish. It was watered down and inedible. My sister said her taco was good but enchilada was inedible. Bean and rice on both plates was OK. Very disappointing.

This was our first time here. Staff was very nice. We ordered food to go. My wife ordered a asada burrito and it was the size of a taco bell burrito for $14 and it was salty. I ordered a Asada plate with no pico with flower tortillas . I got plenty of pico and no tortillas with my meal and it was salty to me and I love salt. My meal was the size of a child's plate. Very disappointed spent $45 for a meal and didn't even get full.

The ambience was nice, a local small restaurant serving decent Mexican food. It was until we received the bill that I thought something was wrong. Family of four with three shots and four margaritas came out to over 160$. Very overpriced for the service.. I love family owned restaurants however I can tell when they are over charging versus the menu. Just be careful going here. Check your bill and fight it. They claim they are working on the menu prices however they do not honor them unless you fight. I would suggest Applebees over this for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Cannot express the explanation mark any more detailed) Each plate should have been ~17.00 each. Shots - 10 a pop Margaritas - expect 16.99 Good luck

Waited over an hour and I placed the order ahead of time on the phone to pick up. My asada burrito came with just lettuce and meat?? Long wait and food was just okay, especially the burrito with no rice and beans? I'm confused? Wouldn't recommend. They weren't even busy? Only two tables?

We used to come here all the time and believe there is a new owner. We had a long drive back home and decided to eat here. While waiting for our Dad to show up to go inside, the man who claimed he was the owner and another man walked out and approached us in hostile manner as my family and I were chatting in the parking lot. He made false accusations and said to pay a $10 parking fee stating "wouldn't you rather pay a $10 parking fee rather than a $500 for a towing fee". There were no signs stating to pay a $10 fee. He made other smartaleck comments after his statement, making the family feeling unwelcome. We've been coming here for years and never had to pay in the past. Very bad look on the business to approach customers in a rude, unprofessional manner, making false accusations, and lying about a parking fee. We ended up leaving and will no longer be coming here after that experience. I would give them zero stars if I could. Don't wait for family in the parking lot because it's clearly prohibited.
