Uma's Rockaway Beach Reviews
Not a single complaint. the food is made fresh to order. the place is really nice and clean. great vibe. lastly... Food is dynamite. never had anything on the menu before and will remember it forever.
Delicious food, cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. Russian food influenced. Do NOT miss the Uma salad, the scallion pancakes and vegetarian or beef manti! They are the best!
Outstanding food and ambience with lovely people making a critical mistake over and over: because your servers fail to write down orders, 4 tables during our meal, including our, received the wrong food at least once, with multiple fast meetings of servers holding plates trying to recall what was coming, and for us it was that our appetizer dish arrived long after all of the entrees were finished, we actually wanted to leave the restaurant but they kept telling us it was on its way, and they didn't even have the grace to comp that appetizer. Write down the orders and you won't make those kind of mistakes.
The meatballs and the dumplings were delicious. Good craft beer on draft
Delicious food and I like the options to pair tangy, crisp salads with more filling dishes. Owner and staff are friendly and there are spots for bike and surfboard storage out front.
I was here earlier today after a long day on the boardwalk. Some wonderful dishes from Uzbekistan can be found here. They can be best described as Chinese food, meets Italian, meets Russian/Ukrainian food. I ate Lamb kebabs, beef dumplings and butternut squash dumplings, and some sort of delicious beef dish. It was 90deg weather but I was living for that soup! Also had some delicious Halva ice cream to end off . I’ve had Halva before, but the ice cream form is something I have never seen! Service was super nice and chill, the vibe was really nice and inviting. The music at the time was classic rock, which I’m not a big listener to but I enjoyed it. And to boot, they had clips of both Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee on a tv by the bar, which is a whole vibe in and of itself. Only thing I would say is that I was super hungry and the portions were more for normal person. If you’re someone who needs a lot of portion then you’ll need to order more. I will be back!
Their menu never fails. Certainly one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. I ordered samsa with lamb and an Uma's salad. I took home what was left because those two dishes are great leftovers! Have the ice cream too.
Near the beach area, so the decor is beach/surfing. Their cuisine was original home style Russian/Uzbekistan. Service was very attentive, courteous and friendly. The food was delicious and a new experience for people to try and enjoy.
We've been twice this summer and loved it! The first time we had the beef manti which not only look gorgeous on the plate but generous, succulent, and delicious pillow-like dumplings of beef studded with onions in a tender dough with sour cream and tomatoey condiment. The fried eggplant salad with fresh tomatoes and shredded feta was YUM! The carrot salad looked very simple but had great flavor and some MSG which is a component of the traditional recipe after I researched it on the internet. I forgot the name but we also had the butternut squash baked pastry. Their borscht was the best I've ever had and I usually care for borscht. We went back the second time, we had the fried potato dumplings which were good, more manti and we tried the pelmeni which were smaller but similar to the manti. I don't think you would need to order both and I think I like the manti better. Oh, and the halva sesame ice cream = superb! So far, it's my favorite place to eat in Rockaway!
Dumplings are awesome. Coconut red lentil soup is excellent. Plov is great, large portion. Service and ambiance 👍🏻
Uma's have been consistently good for 7 years I have been going there. The comfort Central Asian food that is not overpriced and healthy. My go-to are salmon kebob, Uma's salad, moshkichiri, borsch, scallion pancakes.
Everything taste good pretty much and i never wait long. Had the coconut lentil soup probably the best soup i ever had. Brang my mom on mothers day great service excellent food!
Amazing place to take hot plov after a freezing surfing.
Food was amazing so amazing I didn't take pics of how hungry I was after being at the beach 🤣 A man who is a customer told us everything was delicious. HE WASN'T LYING MY BESTFRIEND AND I ordered many appetizers and the famous soup. Everything was delicious.
What an amazing kitchen in the middle of nowhere! I'm originally from Ukraine, and while Pelmeni were larger than normal and with yogurt instead of sour cream, they were just as amazing as I remember them from Ukraine (hint: ask for Vinegar and drop 2-3 drops of it on top of every pelmeni). Lagman soup was excellent. Nice service, and very fast - no complaints. Seriously, we were impressed.
This was the first time I've eaten there and we were pleasantly surprised! The food was very flavorful and came out in a timely manner...I definitely want to try some of the other menu items soon!
Always delicious. Warm vibe, cozy and pretty place. Good service. I am always happy with my meals here. Everything is delicious. Vegetarian / vegan and gluten free options.
This place is a gem if it was anywhere. Especially that it’s so close to the beach. Uzbeki food, or Bukarian the kebabs, the soups the manti. Are all incredible, it reminds me of the spots I go to in Forrest Hills or Rego Park.
This restaurant is delicious. I came here with all my family all five of us and we had such an amazing time. They have a live singer. He was amazing. I had a great time.
Don’t sleep on this place. Best homemade food. The soup and the squash dumplings were to die for. I’m still thinking about them! Can’t wait to go back!!
WOW. What a surprise this place was. The food was outstanding. We were in awe of the flavor of the Lagman noodle soup, manti meat dumplings were delicious and the chicken masala was just perfectly cooked and spiced. It was so good I had to write the review before we even got our dessert!
What a cozy and welcoming place! Huge thanks to the café staff. It’s amazing to sit by the ocean and enjoy such tasty Central Asian food — a real treat!
Been here three times — twice before the pandemic and once yesterday — and it continues to be wonderful. The squash manti (dumplings) are savory and tender, and the yogurt sauce they come with is a nice extra touch. The chicken skewer is the biggest winner — super tender and juicy. The servers are attentive and the food comes out pretty quickly, plus the vibe here is just right for being slightly inland from a beach. Although I’m rarely in the area i do hope to go back here again!
Delicious post beach dinner! So dang tasty, everything. Steady flow of delicious dishes one at time, came upon us, and we devoured it all. Party of seven (four kids) fed very well. Go here!
Had a great dinner with friends and our kids at Uma’s - we loved the food and atmosphere. Highly recommend!
Went with my best friend after a great "girl day" at breezy point. Eating here was the best end to our day. We ordered the coconut red lentil soup. So good. It was warm and creamy and fully of flavor. We also order the Manti stuffed with squash with a Filet Mignon skewer. Honestly, the flavors all exploded in my mouth. I literally can't wait to come back. Highly recommend.
Meat mantys doing pretty well. Non alcoholic beer - just exists and that’s makes me happy. By the way they have good list of beer, including European. I also appreciate that intérieur was modern and simple. It is out stands from restaurants with certain cuisines.
This is my new favorite food in the Rockaways. Came here with a group and we ordered a bunch of different things- dumplings, scallion pancakes, eggplant salad, some meat and rice dish. Everything was packed with flavor and the meat was so tender. My only regret was coming here on our last night in town because I definitely would have been back at least one more time, if not two.
Uma's is the best! The staff is super nice & the food is delicious! Been there a few times and I loved it. Also, I ordered through seamless recently (kind of late towards closing), and when my mom went to go pick up the food, they didn't even have the order. The staff was super Duper, nice, and was ready to put another order through, even though it was almost closing time. Finally, the seamless order went through, and they got the ticket. it really was a mistake on seamless' part for putting the order through so slowly (like 20mins later). But the fact that they were so accommodating, and nice on the phone was very refreshing.10/10 love uma's
Great meal after the beach. Loved that we could walk into this restaurant at 6:30 PM on a summer Sunday and actually get a table. Both the beef dumplings and squash dumplings were great. Each dish is 4 huge dumplings for $12 - a very nice value, especially given the quality. Coconut lentil soup and scallion pancake were also very good. Good service and clean bathroom. Definitely will return.
food is delish. traditional uzbeki food with a twist! johnathon is also such a great server, friendly and speedy. would recommend this rockaway gem 😎😎😎
Excellent..every single thing on this menu is a 10
The dining experience was awesome. My wife and I had appetizers, entrees, sodas and had no room for dessert. The tastes were sublime! The price was even right for our meal. The atmosphere was comfortable and grown-up with our being to stiff and forced. Go there; eat there!
Uma's is a great local restaurant with delicious food and very friendly staff. We went there for a lunch and were not disappoint! We had Manti With Meat which were awesome, and Pelmeni which I loved. Everything is very fresh and delicious. We will definitely go back to try the rest of the menu. Highly recommend!!!
the plav and manti dumplings were delicious, we got both dishes and split between three people
A big "Let's go to the Rockaways" reason. Butternut squash dumplings are to die for. Many of the daily dishes just absolutely wonderful. Portions are large and great for sharing so just have it! Get a bunch of dishes and share! And then there's the beer: Ukrainian, Russian and European! You will not be disappointed.
Very cool that they had Ukrainian beer on tap. Comfortable, airy interior. Attentive service. The dishes tasted authentic. I'm a meet eater, so I had a plov and lamb kebabs. Both dishes were fresh and tasted great. The plov had crispy rice with cooked carrots, generous chunks of melt in your mouth lamb and spices.
The best restaurant in the rockaways right now imo. Super friendly staff, delicious food, seating, takeout and close to the beach. Many restaurant food differ in quality from indoor to takeout. Not here. I only went once or so before the pandemic, but the quality since the pandemic with takeout has been superb. Uma’s has been by far the takeout of highest quality and taste in our rockaways neighborhood. Thanks so much to their team for providing their services during these months. Highly recommended!
Really nice spot doing authentic Uzbek dishes. Delicious food, laidback vibe, the perfect way to indulge after a nice beach session. The vegetarian dumplings were the standout dish for me. The noodles were also delicious.
Had never been there before. Wasn’t sure of the menu. Ended up being very good. Even for picky eaters like my wife. Would go again, no question.
A Central Asian culinary oasis in rockaway with high quality fresh vegetables, succulent grilled meats and off the beaten track local delicacies of Samsa a central Asian answer to the empanada. If you are fortunate you may spot Patti smith at her table munching on the superbly spiced Korean carrot salad.
THE BEST LAGMAN I HAVE EVER BEEN TASTED! Pumpkin (squash) manti are also very delicious! The atmosphere is welcoming, the staff are considerate and friendly. Uma is a wonderful chef and so is the lagman chef 🧑🍳 The best of luck to Uma’s 🇺🇿🇰🇷🇺🇦🇷🇺🇰🇿
The food there is always fresh and the menu was awesome. The staff are always friendly and kind. Highly recommend.
We've been huge fans of uma's for a few years now. Everything is so fresh and delicious. The kimchi salad the red coconut lentil soup, and a hearty mash are vegan and so tasty. Great staff and people vibes.
We were hungry and found ourselves in front of Uma's restaurant. Everything I tried was delicious. Uma's house salad, a leek filled something, salmon skewer, and roast potatoes. All super delicious. Our friends have 2 small children that ate everything on their plates. Shocking as they only want McDonald's! Their parents both had lamb, and mashed potatoes. Their plates were licked clean. I can't wait to go back.
I've dined here many times over the years and have always had an excellent experience. Their menu is quite interesting and diverse, and the food really hits the spot, especially after a cold, windy day at the beach. The atmosphere and vibes are always very cozy.
Our meal after the beach at Uma’s stopped me dead in my tracks. I couldn’t believe such a delicious meal was tucked all the way in Rockaway. Hands down one of the best meals I have had in a long time. We ordered practically all of the popular items: Plov, Manti, Borscht, Samsa, Korean carrot salad, and the lamb kebab. We shared everything family style and nothing missed. The balance of crunch with savory dishes drowned in sauce was perfect. The servers were very friendly and attentive the whole time and it was all reasonably priced for how much food we got. Highly recommend to anyone heading out to the beach and I’d even argue it warrants a trip out of the city in and of itself.
A very cute and hip uzbekistan restaurant that offers decently sized dishes. I love the moch Kichiri because it was packed with veggies and left me very full. The wait for your food to arrive can be very long and many of their dishes run out at night. Despite that, the waitstaff was very helpful and accommodating.
Really amazing place. It's a shame it's so far out for me, because otherwise, it'd be a real frequent. The place itself is nicely furnished, and has a decent amount of seating. It does get crowded, but only because the food is so good. The bathroom is nice and clean, and the service was nice. No complaints. The food was amazing. The Korean carrot salad was stunning, and the samsa was a crowd favorite in my group. I got a lagman soup which was thoroughly enjoyable, and my group partners got manti and pelmeni, which were really great. The price was reasonable for the amount, and it's more filling than it seems. Truly an amazing place, and will come back whenever I'm done beaching around.
My friend and I were looking at places to eat after a long day at the beach and we found this Uzbek/Kazakh fusion restaurant on Rockaway Beach. The decor was vintage, the lighting was dim, and the service was nice. We’ve never had this cuisine before and it was truly a great first introduction. We ordered the red lentil soup, pelmeni, and manti with butternut squash. These dishes were quite hearty and flavorful, despite being so vegetable forward. Uma’s described the pelmeni and manti as large dumplings, and they certainly delivered on that aspect. I really like the touch of detail with the caramelized onions and fresh dill, brightening the dishes. My absolute favorite was the soup. If I could have a gallon of the coconut/red lentil soup from Uma’s I would certainly drink it all up. It was so earthy, yet creamy and had the right amount of salt for my taste. The ice cream was also quite yummy, it was refreshing and the toasted sesame crumbs enhanced the rustic nature of the dessert. If I come back to Jacob Riis or Rockaway Beach again, I would certainly come back to dine at Uma’s. I definitely recommend bringing friends here to share various dishes with, as it was a bit pricey. Overall, this was a great dining experience and I’m glad we got to find this gem in the neighborhood!
Appetizers Green Bichaki and Samsa. 2 apps arrived with 3 plates to split. Both were enjoyable. Silk road salad for the table. For dinner 1 person ordered Dumpling bone soup, 1 salmon kabob and 1 filet mignon kabob, 2 sides potatoes. The soup came out 15 min before the other meals. One of us was done before the other meals arrived. When I enquired why, waiter said that's how they do it and had I been there before. Honestly, I would have preferred he apologized for mistake instead of acting like we were splitting the soup. I mean he didn't bring out 3 spoons, so... Nice Rose'. Overall enjoyable experience.
Ordered for pickup and it was twice as expensive as advertised on this google menu when I picked up the order, but I’d pay the higher price again it was so good. Got the borscht and squash dumplings, both were excellent and served in great portions.
Overall, it was a very pleasant experience. The Russian dumplings were very tasty, good house wines, and a cozy inside. I would recommend it for a nice time out
It was interesting that the Lagman, hand pulled noddles, tasted similar to the Xinjiang Uyghur noodles. However the noodles I had do not have much texture, simply overcooked. The Samsa which is a bun with lamb meat inside was very good. The price was reasonable. The service was good. Overall good value.
Great variety of interesting dishes and appetizers from eastern european and asian cuisine. Once in a while the live lone guitar player who plays the same four notes all night comes to ruin the atmosphere but the food still makes this place worth your while
I went for a dinner with my bf to Uma's. I got the rice with beef which was soooo delicious. The vibe is so nice and romantic I loved it but its a bit too pricey.
very sweet staff super trendy atmosphere. the food is delicious. we got pelmeni dumplings which were scrumptious. The filet minion kebab, and salmon kebab were also wonderful.
Umas is good food at a good price. Their use of spices is on point and the yogurt sauce is something I cant eat enough of (pairs with practically everything on the menu). The bichaki, beet salad, manti with squash, and plov are my staples here. Lately they've been offering tikka masala as a special which is perhaps the only indian food being prepared at a restaurant in Rockaway, for which I am grateful. Last time I ordered the samsa, lots of little bits of tough gristle. Might want to steer clear of that one, although the pastry shell was very good.
Great to find this Uzbekistán restaurant in Rockaway. We got some plates to share so we could all try different things, I absolutely recommend the dumpligs as well as the kebab Fillet mignon and the lamb one. Both delicious. The ice cream is interesting too. If you’re gonna take the buckwheat make sure you pair to something creamy, or it’s very dry. Also the turkey rice was not bad but I felt it was a bit dry. Value was great, I feel the price was really reasonable, and the atmosphere is nice. I’ll be back to try more plates!
Ivey been excited to try Uma's for a long time but I wasn't impressed. I had the butternut dumplings but they were incredibly dense and seemed old. The service was slow despite a nearly empty restaurant. Also, nobody was checking vax and the manager (I guess? Literally did nothing while we were there) was unmasked the whole time.
★★☆☆☆ “Authentic… in some unintended ways” Stopped by this Uzbek restaurant hoping for a warm Central Asian welcome and a comforting plate of plov. What I got instead felt more like a self-service experiment. Service? Practically a myth. The waitress didn’t bother with a menu introduction — just put it on the table and disappeared like a desert mirage. Specials? Who knows, maybe they’re special enough to remain a secret, she did not bother to explain what they are. Ordered the pilaf, expecting that classic slow-cooked harmony of rice and meat. Instead, it arrived as a pile of rice with a few random chunks of lamb tossed on top like an afterthought. Definitely not cooked together — unless “together” now means “sharing the same plate.” As for the lamb skewer — $18 for five small pieces. At that price, I almost expected a souvenir or at least a side of enthusiasm. On the bright side, the food looked roughly Uzbek, and I didn’t leave hungry. But overall, the place could use a little more heart — and maybe a reminder that hospitality is supposed to be part of that cuisine.
Disgusting, again disgusting. Shishkabob was practically raw while other parts were extremely tough mentioned to server and she was very non chalant like, " what do u want us to do" appetizer made with what seemed to be 2 day old bread wasn't sure if I was in a restaurant or medieval times literally. You guys can do a little better than that. Great concept and ambiance food and service again disgusting.
This was my go to spot for great Eastern European food, but it became extremely unaffordable now. There’s no way I’m going to continue to pay $14 for one stick of chicken kebab with 3 small pieces of bread and a few slices of onions. (I understand that we’re going through inflation, but that same cost can get me one kebab with rice, salad, and a warm pita at another place.) The yogurt sauce that comes with the pelmeni has become very salty for the past few months. I like the Uma’s salad, but feta cheese is naturally salty. Did they have to put 1/2 pound of the shavings in there? I thought that was a bit crazy. Unfortunately, I won’t be returning because the prices here have become ridiculous.
The Indian Masala chicken is microwaves, came cold to the table! My daughter found a short hair in her chicken kabobs!!! Flies are over your food!!!
Ordered Plov and Lulu (lamb) kabab for take out. For quality of food and price; I do not recommend. The Plov for $19 is not even fill up the take out box, once I tried it - it was a disappointment. The rice was so hard like I was chewing soft pebbles, in addition the rice was drenched with oil 🤮 - the beef on the Plov was very dry. The lulu kabab $13 - was very mid at best. I’m confused at their pricing justification for a single low grade kebab. For $35, and low quality food, I’m appalled. Only thing giving me 2 stars instead of 1 star is the friendliness of the server when I went to pick up order. Avoid and go else where, or try for yourself 🥲
Cosy and relatively clean. Soup was delicious with hand made noodles. However, all main dishes ordered were very salty. Server replaced items twice, but returned dishes from the kitchen were still exceedingly salty. Chief should be very conscious and mindful about high salt content in the dishes. Server was responsible and helpful. Not sure I would return, unless owners assess their excess salt issues.
Orders delivery and received cold food and no utensils (despite asking for them). The bag was soaked inside as well. Total disappointment.
My 1st time & last. I wouldn't mind the prices if the food was good. The chicken kebab tasted like it wasn't seasoned & the Samsa was dry that came with a sauce that was like water with tomato paste for color. Not what I was expecting. 👎🏼
I found this place on Instagram and l have always wanted to try this place so I decided to come here on Labor Day. Upon arrival, I was told they ran out of plov which was insane to hear 1:30 in the afternoon. I left very disappointed but I will come back to try the food. I wish the server did more to keep me there. I will call ahead in the future to make sure they have plov and I would advise anyone coming to Uma's to call as well if they want the plov
Ordered via Grub hub for a special occasion. Received the wrong order that was less than half of my actual order. Called to clear up the error and got a very rude woman named Katya who told me it wasn't her problem or the restaurant's. No apologies. Told.me there was no manager to speak with. Then hung up. We've gone to Uma's for years. No more. Unacceptable.
Uma’s dishes are really gentrified versions of Caribbean meals. I ordered the salmon kebab and found it bland and underwhelming. I also ordered the dumpling bone broth soup and found no dumplings just two pieces of carrot and a bits of potatoes. It just was not worth the cost. The staff was professional and friendly, but the food was not worth it.
Very convinced the staff here are RACIST! Treated me like I was a ghost in the restaurant. The food was disgusting. Cold and overcooked. The waitresses were so rude to me and my party. I ended up walking out. There's so many better places to eat in the area then coming to here. Trust me!
I ordered plov and it was a complete disappointment. The rice was undercooked, the carrots overly salty, and the meat completely bland with no spices at all. I told the waitress, and all I got was a quick "sorry." They didn't offer to fix it, replace it, or do anything to make it right. I paid, watched them throw the food in the garbage, and left hungry. No respect for customers or quality
Unfortunately, the chicken in my Tikka Masala was refrigerator cold, which really turned me off. I told my server, who was super sweet, and he took my plate. He returned with the same plate, just microwaved. I didn’t mind at the time, but it did gross me out a little. The sauce was a different consistency after being heated up. The food was okay, and it was super expensive. I won’t be returning.
