A16 San Francisco Reviews
A charming and atmospheric dining experience with true character. A16 in San Francisco has a distinct style and a warm, inviting ambiance that immediately sets it apart. We enjoyed a light yet flavorful meal, starting with the burrata salad and the fresh green salad, both beautifully prepared and perfectly balanced, accompanied by a lovely glass of white wine and delicious focaccia. We were seated at the outdoor sidewalk tables, surrounded by plants and softly glowing string lights, which created a relaxed and intimate atmosphere—ideal for an enjoyable evening. The service was prompt, attentive, and professional, adding to the overall sense of ease and comfort. A16 offers a simple yet refined Italian dining experience with great ambiance and thoughtful execution. A wonderful spot to return to.
We went for dinner for the first time with my boyfriend and loved it! We ordered the octopus to start, which came with some amazing bread, and for our main dishes we had the lingcod fish with a delicious green salad and the mushroom pizza. Everything was really tasty. We also had a glass of red wine and a beer. The girl who served us was super kind and attentive. We’ll definitely be coming back!
Great experience for a date night on our trip to SF. I have never, ever had a red sauce that tastes just like my Sicilian mother makes so my mind was blown. Sat outside which was a bit more bustling than we expected, however server was attentive and friendly, and the Lambrusco was amazing. Our server made sure to note any differences in the drinks and food we might not have realized from other Italian spots, and unfortunately we were just too full for desert! Will be back for the sauce, for sure.
We had our daughter’s graduation dinner at A16 and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The service was outstanding—friendly, professional, and incredibly attentive. Every dish was delicious, from the wood-fired pizzas to the house-made pastas. Our whole table was raving about the food! The atmosphere was perfect for a celebration—warm, welcoming, and full of energy. A16 made a special night even more memorable. Highly recommend!
The food was absolutely amazing — fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. The vibe was classy but relaxed, and everything came out perfectly timed. We had an awesome waiter (wish I caught her name!) with red hair who was super friendly, attentive, and made the whole evening even better. Would definitely come back — highly recommend!
Italian restaurant. The pizza were ready in 5 minutes and super delicious. Probably the best I had in the city. The chocolate budino was a very good dessert too. Only complaint, the back of the restaurant gets super noisy. The app on my phone measured it at 95 decibels! It was very hard to maintain a conversation.
Third visit and first time meeting the owner. What she doesn’t know about Southern Italian wine is probably not worth knowing. Very unassuming and warm lady - which matches the unpretentious restaurant. Sure, I’ve had some better Italian dishes, but it has the whole package here - great food, wine, service and atmosphere. Pizzas were a standout, as was the Berkshire pork.
Had a set menu for dinner where there were multiple courses. Main courses were great but appetizers were lacking a bit for the price point. Mains were extremely filling and desserts were delicious. Service was a bit spotty that day for an occasion set menu so was understandable. Would come back to try their other regular menu items.
Absolutely not recommended for a date or an important business dinner The restaurant has a beautiful atmosphere, a pleasant setting, and very good food. As Italian cuisine goes, they are doing a great job, and overall we did enjoy our evening here. However, several service details took away from the experience and from enjoying our company. The timing and coordination of the dishes were off: we ordered multiple plates from the kitchen, and they all arrived at the table at the same time. The table was overcrowded, we didn’t know where to start, and the hot dishes cooled down while we were still eating. Ideally, starters should arrive first, but this may have been a miscommunication. What I appreciated less was being asked to take boxes away in the middle of the meal, as if we had finished when we were still eating, and not being provided with serving spoons for shared dishes. These are small details, but they make a big difference in the overall dining experience. There is definitely room for improvement in service, attention to guests’ needs, and understanding the right timing at the table. A bit more attentiveness from both the dining room and the kitchen, as well as a warmer farewell at the end, would have been very appreciated. I’m leaving a 4-star review because I can see the effort and potential, and I truly hope the service improves over time. This was my second visit, and I didn’t expect the service to be this inconsistent. I hope next time the experience matches the quality of the food.
This definitely has a family owned vibe and it has a nice backyard that's great for larger groups. Of course in SF it may get windy and cold even on a sunny day so be prepared for that if you want outside seating. The service is decent but when it gets busy they do forget to bring new bottles of water. We also weren't offered bread. As for food we only has pizza and dessert so I can only comment on that. The pizza is very similar to any other Neapolitan style pizza except there is more varieties of different meats they add to pizzas. Tiramisu is delicious as it should. Overall it's a good choice but be aware that parking is ridiculously lacking so be prepared to drive around for a while for street parking even if you park several blocks away. The name reminds me of a16z but probably doesn't mean anyone who's not a techie.
The pizza and wine were amazing, but the service was not good. Took almost 20 minutes to get our wine and water. The Salumi (cheese plate) was very odd - it was like a pickled styled / latin flavored cheese plate and couldn’t finish it.
The ambience is charming and carefully designed. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a modern touch of Italian style that really stands out. However, I was a bit surprised by the pizza selection and especially the pricing. I was expecting something more faithful to traditional Italian pizza. The dough itself is excellent, but the pizzas is too Americanized for my taste. A Margherita topped with Parmesan (even when not listed on the menu), or options overloaded with garlic, miss the mark for anyone seeking authenticity. It would be great to see classic Italian style pizzas included as standard options, not just add-ons that raise the price. Another issue was the oven: the pizza base was completely blackened, which not only made it unhealthy, but also gave it an unpleasant burnt flavor. The oven needs proper maintenance.
Food and drink were mediocre. We got 2 pizzas, meatballs, arugula salads, and a spritz. The pizzas were okay. The meatballs were probably the worst I’ve ever had. They had barely any flavor and broke apart so easily. It seems like it was made with more breadcrumbs than meat. You needed to cover them in the sauce for some flavor. The spritz I ordered: There was no hint of pomegranate, lime or rosemary like it was supposed to have. My husband tried it and said it tasted like a plain sour beer. The best thing we had was the simple arugula salad. It was pretty empty inside when we got there. Of all the seating options the host sat us across from the oven. We asked to move to the back outdoor area-but she said it’s fully booked. The whole time we were there no one took the empty table we would’ve liked. She did eventually move us over 1-2 tables from the oven. Unsure why we weren’t seated near the other patrons in the back part of the restaurant vs right by the kitchen (which also would’ve been more comfortable due to the heat). Our server was really friendly and nice while she helped us order. But, she never came back to check in on us during the meal (and neither did anyone else). When we were finished we were looking around for her to get our bill. It seemed like she went on a break as we finally saw her sitting and chatting with her coworkers. Someone else eventually came to get us our bill. A change of server mid-meal is fine, but normally you’re told who your new server will be.
I want to be clear this review is based on the Christmas Eve set menu and not based on their normal menu. This was a 4-5 course meal and my favorites were the tuna crudo and the roasted salmon, the king salmon was cooked very well, seasoned beautifully, however, everything surrounding the salmon was below average, more specifically, under seasoned, you can tell the beans and the chickpeas were under seasoned in hopes the San marzano tomatoes would mask it. That was the theme of the evening is the majority of things that came out were under seasoned. We ordered a pizza for the kids, unfortunately the dough for that was underbaked. We also opted for the wine pairing, they forgot to bring one the reds to us.
We were "influenced" to try A16. We sat at the wine bar area, which was small and unfortunately very cramped. (My chair was backed up to my neighbor's chair.) The atmosphere was nice, but loud. We shared a little gem salad and the Margherita pizza. I also tried the Aperol spritz, which was refreshing. As you can see from my photos, our first pizza did not arrive with any mozzarella cheese, only the burrata, which is an add-on. After a few bites, I noticed something hard in my pizza. I initially thought it was a piece of old crust from the oven, but after the next bite, I realized it was wood chips from the oven. The bottom of the pizza was burnt, which overpowered the overall flavor of the pizza. We couldn't locate our waiter, so we flagged down the hostess. She quickly removed the pizza and made us another. Our second pizza arrived with both mozzarella and burrata cheese. This pizza was better, but still had a burnt crust. Due to the issues we encountered, the hostess comped our pizza. This was my first time dining here, and I won't return. SF has a lot of options for pizza, which are better. We did not try any other dinner entrées, so maybe those would be a better option.
Mediocre at its best … real disappointment. Just don’t go to save your money. Had a high hope/expectation as it has such many James beard nominations. Wrong. I visited with my friend as I was in SF for the weekend. The server had zero passions. For “Outstanding Wine Program Winner”, he couldn’t bother us much to give a recommendation. He said something and I agreed to get a carafe of it, before I read deep enough he pulled the menu out of my hand - not to mention he never said “hi welcome to join with us” or any sort of pitch: -1pt. SERVICE - We ordered two antipasti, pizza and pasta, they served EVERYTHING in under 10 minutes. How did you think we can eat all in one go? It’s not a chain family restaurant. - While we were served everything pretty much rushed to be out of the place, couple next to us had plates/utensils replaced after their antipasto. So why I’m getting the different service from the same exact server? FOOD - Everything we got, was alright, but nothing fantastic. Considering it’s in SF, it’s pretty bad. - Pizza (ROMANA)was rather “soggy” than juicy. Couldn’t tell if it was because of the dough or the amount of tomato sauce - Pasta (MACCARONARA) was really “meh” for the price. The noodle is super chewy, which is good but didn’t go that well with the sauce. - Two appetizers were good, but who can mess up asparagus? - He added prosciutto to our smoked burrata without asking for it. It was charged on the bill as well. Definitely not worth $31. I always have three metrics to measure the restaurant; price, food, and service(ambience). I’m okay to miss one element, but this place missed alll three. Too expensive for a mediocre food, and service was just too bad. Easy worst meal during 4 day SF trip. Wish I could get a refund but I’m totally fine by not visiting them again at all. I can only imagine owner/main chef have changed since 2015. Ugh.
Disappointed that they decided at the last minute to force a $132 prix fixe set menu for Valentine's Day. I booked weeks ago, but 1 week before they messaged to say they were not offering their a la carte menu. A16 was supposed to be the third stop (at 9:15pm) on our romantic tour (which also included a nice cocktail bar and a show), so we certainly had no need for a full five-course meal. I understand why a restaurant would want to force all reservations to a minimum spend, but they should have done so much much more empathy and advanced notice. By the time they told me, it was hard to find another reservation/ They also gaslit me and made it sound like they had always had the prix fixe on OpenTable, but it was obvious they added it later as new reservations had San Valentino as an "Experience," but my reservation was "Standard Seating" and had no special experience. I wish I had taken a screenshot of the messages to share just how unfriendly and unsympathetic the staff was. Glad we didn't spend a day of love with such unfriendly people.
My boyfriend and I came to the city to enjoy Christmas Eve and were super excited about attending A16 celebration of 7 fishes. We had planned for this to be special and worth the price. I ordered the wine pairing and was equally excited to see how your Chef and Somm put the pairings together as I am a Sommelier myself. Sadly this evening was full of disappointments. The food was all super bland, the calamari and pasta dish was rubbery and inedible and the salmon was beyond bad. My piece was dried out and way over cooked where the other piece was grey and a lot of it was from the lateral line. Seriously I have never seen a lateral line not cut off in a high end restaurant. The dessert was horrible. It was full of pectin and unimpressive. We didn’t eat it at all. The wine was just as bad. The 3 oz pours were nothing more than 2 oz and when I asked for a glass of the white since there was not enough to try with the ramekins of salad I was told it was $49 a glass. ( for white Italian wine)that is completely unheard of. Our waitress never checked on us and I had to ask 2 other people to get her. The wine after the second course was brought after the course as finished and the next course brought out so I never really tasted what the pairing was supposed to be. Every time the food and wine was brought out it was never explained or talked about. How did you ever get a Michelin star with this quality of food and wait staff. I can’t believe that after the meal was over and I had nothing really to eat that the total was over $500 with tip. What a waste and disappointment. We can’t get the moments back or money but so bummed that I chose to spend my Holiday with A16. Super disappointed, Kristi Snyder and Chris Junge
We made a reservation yet weren't seated until 20 minutes after we showed up. We were able to order an appetizer (meatballs) which was ok but the sauce was a bit watery. Another 30 minutes passed before anyone came to take our order, at which point we paid and left. While it was busy, I've had better and quicker service at a packed bar on St. Patrick's Day pub crawls. Food prices are a bit on the high side and wine selection is limited if you don't want a full bottle. There are better places to go in Marina for dinner.
