DESTAPAS San Francisco Reviews
Destapas recently made Eater’s Best Spanish Restaurants for 2025, and it lives up to the hype as arguably the most authentic Spanish spot in SF. The Tuna Tartar is the standout—unexpectedly creative with potato chips and avocado. The Patatas Bravas are the reliable classic you want them to be, and the Cod-stuffed Piquillo in creamy pepper sauce is a masterclass in texture. The decor feels like you’ve stepped directly into Old Town San Sebastián, though the menu leans toward a traditional Madrid-style tapas experience. It’s vibrant but polished. Excellent wine list. The Mencia (Bierzo) was bright and elegant, cutting through the richness of the tapas perfectly. Finished with a classic Basque Cheesecake that hits the "crustless/burnt" profile exactly right.
I LOVE Destapas! I’ve been coming here at least once a month for the past 3.5 years and every time I love it more. Luis, Raul, and his staff are so welcoming and friendly that they make you feel at home. I’ve tried almost everything in the menu, and I everything is just so good. I love that they have seasonal special menus which makes me excited every time I visit. I love the sangria and the tartar de Santiago dessert is just one of my favorite desserts ever. I recommend this restaurant to anyone that asks me for a food recommendation in SF! Spanish food is one of my favorite cuisines, and this place just has everything I love and more! Yummy food, great service, and cozy atmosphere. If you are in the Bay Area, this is a must try !!
Authentic Spanish food. We had the vegan paella and bravas and they were both fantastic. As a Spaniard, having eaten hundreds of paellas before and cooking them myself very often, I think Destapas' paella is outstanding. Vegan paella is trickier to cook, because the traditional one owes its flavor mostly to the chicken and rabbit. But this vegan paella had a bold and robust flavor too, with a great saffron aroma, and even with "socarrat". Highly recommend!
Destapas SF is, without question, the heart of our weekends. We live in Marin County and happily drive every other Saturday just to have dinner here, that’s how extraordinary this place is. It’s not just a restaurant, it’s the spot where we instantly feel at home. The food? Spectacular. The patatas bravas are the best in the Bay Area (crispy, spicy perfection!), the croquetas de jamón serrano are pure comfort in every bite, the beef empanadas are juicy and addictive, and the pan con tomate & jamón serrano tastes like it was flown in straight from Spain. And the tarta de Santiago? A sweet masterpiece that should win awards. Pair everything with their sangría or a glass of Spanish wine and you’ll understand why we keep coming back. And the staff is kind, attentive, and genuinely wonderful. They treat you like family every single time. Destapas SF isn’t just our favorite restaurant in the Bay Area, it’s our culinary home. A place filled with flavor, warmth, and corazón. If you want authenticity, joy, and food Destapas will be your favorite place 🍷🔥
As Spaniards, we have high standards when it comes to Spanish cuisine, and this restaurant truly exceeded our expectations!!! The food was absolutely delicious, with top-quality ingredients that made every dish exceptional. The service was impeccable, Raul (owner) was super attentive, friendly, and professional. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. If you’re looking for authentic Spanish flavors and outstanding hospitality, this place is a must-visit!
We had an excellent experience here. My husband is Spanish and we have a tough time finding Spanish restaurants that he deems “authentic” (none in Boston, and only one in NY)- but were lucky to find this one shortly after moving to SF. The croquetas de jamón were phenomenal with great flavor and texture. We also tried the classic paella which was spot on! The vermut de la casa was also a nice treat. Luis was super attentive and knowledgeable. We will be back (and plan to try the squid ink paella next!)
Madrid in San Francisco. Los Callos is fantastic, atmosphere and service is on point. Very well worth a visit.
Beautiful and cozy restaurant. Very nice heated patio. Owner was really friendly Food was wonderful! Small tapa options so you can order a variety of dishes to share. My favorites were the oxtail, meatballs, and octopus. Everything we tried was great!
Huge win for the neighborhood and SF. Exceptional tapas and paella. Incredible service. Owners are amazing and the outdoor setting is really well done decked out with heaters and adjustable awning Update: Run don't walk to get a slice of their incredible Basque style cheesecake. Delicious. Happy to know we can order a whole cheesecake to go if order placed ahead of time.
The food was exceptional, especially the grilled octopus, which was perfectly tender and full of flavor. The sangria was also amazing - refreshing, well-balanced, and beautifully served. The service was excellent from the moment we arrived. The staff was warm, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. Without a doubt, this is a place I would highly recommend. Great food, great drinks, and outstanding hospitality - I'll definitely be coming back!
Delicious tapas in a lovely atmosphere! A beautiful restaurant and a great menu with good vegan options marked. We had a lovely time here - we really liked the white anchovies with chips and Spanish omelette
We got a last minute reservation outside and the heat lamps and ambiance were dreamy! The food came quickly and was tasty and authentic. The sangria was delicious and my family had a fantastic time! Get the oxtail and potato puree, and the beef empanadas!

Really lovely food! Many vegetarian options. I lived their potato bravas and the vegan pallea! It was delicious! 🤤 If you’re looking for good Spanish food, look no further! 😊

We stumbled upon this Spanish tapas spot in the Mission and were absolutely blown away. From the moment we walked in, Raul, the owner, welcomed us warmly and was kind enough to accommodate a third seat last minute. The hospitality alone made us feel at home. We ordered boquerones, grilled shrimp, garlic shrimp, beef empanadas, and a squid ink seafood paella that was rich and tasty. Everything was bursting with flavor and felt authentically Spanish. It was so good we forgot to take photos! The sangria was a standout refreshing, not too sweet, made with real fruit, wine, and a hint of sparkling water. It was great to learn that Raul and his business partner are from Madrid and opened this place during COVID what a gift to the neighborhood. We’ll definitely be back!

The food and service was absolutely fantastic. Great outdoor seating with very comfortable heaters. The food was truly authentic and tasted great, especially also all the seafood seemed very fresh. Our favorites were: The octopus and calamari The croquettas The Jamon Iberico plate The Paella Mixta The red wine (Rioja Reserva) and the Sangria were amazing too! Highly recommend!

Really enjoyed our meal here. First rate. The croquettes were really lovely, the Mallorcan bread with chorizo was delicious, we followed this with the shrimp (in a wonderful sauce with crunchy bread to dunk!) and the grilled octopus. The octopus was the star of the meal. Crisp char, with the most tender octopus I have ever eaten. Had a delicious arugula, goats cheese and pear salad to accompany. Fantastic food, the house white wine as great, service lovely and friendly, but casual. Highly recommend.
Great Spanish restaurant! We had an amazing seafood paella, full of flavor and perfectly cooked. Unfortunately, we didn’t even have time to take a picture — it was gone too fast! We also enjoyed a sangria, which paired perfectly with the meal. The total was around $60 for two people, very fair for the quality. Definitely recommended!
Super cute and cozy vibe both inside and on the master patio. Great service every time. Great variety of small plates and paella. Nice portion sizes. Everything we had gotten is good. Tons of gluten free options and the menu is marked.
High quality food. And wine. Kind staff. Had my birthday dinner here. They overheard it was my birthday as we were closing out and then came out with a slice of cake. We were on the earlier side but the volume and atmosphere was great. Relaxed, welcoming, well-designed environment. Would definitely recommend!

Tried the mixta paella, which was very good. I'd like to try the squid ink paella next time. Overall, the tapas were excellent. We didn't love the crispy pork belly. We enjoyed the charred broccolini, grilled octopus (good though I've had better), and hamon. I wouldn't get the devilled eggs again, it was a little too sweet. The aperol spritz is superb - they got the flavors balanced perfectly.
The seafood tapas were the standouts. The squid ink paella was really good, but the star of the show was the octopus. We also ordered the beef pasta dish and a sausage on toast dish, which I could have passed on. Basque cheesecake was phenomenal, churros were overcooked and to crispy. Great value for quality, service was awesome. Good date night spot.
Great place to share a paella, the paella is indeed for 2 people. I recommend trying the devil egg appetizer. Would not order the arugula salad again, it was fine but just expensive for arugula. As for specials, they had a great flan but the Basque cheesecake was amazing

Had a friend’s going away party. We had a large party (12 people) Excellent service, very accommodating. Great patio ambiance. Paella and appetizers were good too.
We went just for the paella, it burnt. I was terribly disappointed. The ones from Costco tastes better. The shrimp dish was just garlicky. The only eatable dish was the calamari.
