Mother in the Mission is such a gem — one of those rare bars that gets everything right. The cocktails were outstanding — so flavorful, balanced, and genuinely fun to sip while catching up with friends. The ambience is what really sets it apart: a huge, airy room with a warm, welcoming vibe and a big screen playing movies that adds to the laid-back charm. It’s the kind of place that feels easy — no pretension, just good drinks, good company, and great energy. A perfect spot to unwind, connect, and feel completely at home. 🌈🍸

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 An Absolute Gem – A Must-Visit Queer Haven! This bar is everything a community space should be—warm, inclusive, and downright magical. As a lesbian-owned establishment, it radiates authenticity and pride from the moment you walk through the door. The energy is always electric but never overwhelming—just the right balance of cozy and alive. You can vibe to music while still being able to chat with your friends without shouting at them 🙂 The bartenders are absolute sweethearts—welcoming, attentive, and somehow always remember your favorite drink (which, by the way, might be hard to choose because the drink menu is out of this world: from having their own custom Mother beer, cocktails with playful names, top-shelf spirits, and fun ways to take your shots, that make the experience fun! What truly sets this place apart are the unique events—from drink & draw to dance parties, trans meetups, tech networking social mixers, the diversity of events is palpable and it's easy to meet new friends or just vibe with chosen family. It’s not just a bar—it’s a pillar of the community, a safe space where joy, connection, and celebration thrive. Whether you're a regular or it's your first time walking in, you'll leave feeling like you belong. Can’t recommend it enough. Five stars doesn’t do it justice. 🌈💖

Drinks and service were wonderful. I really wanted to like this place more but none of the toilets were working and they couldn't run the dishwasher due to a plumbing issue. All very unsanitary. Also cash only but they have an ATM. Hopefully they will have the plumbing fixed before we try again. We didn't want to leave early but we had to since there was not a functional bathroom. Update: it's fixed 🙌 🤗 and now I can just love the vibes.

Fantastic little punk rock lesbian bar. Loved the vibe. A little cramped but it was definitely atmospheric! Also, I heard the explanation they give to masc presenting men over preserving the space and keeping it comfortable for all women, love that!!

My boyfriend and I are both transgender. We are always looking for interesting nightlife that also feels comfortable and inclusive. Mother has always been that! We have never felt uncomfortable here and always feel welcome. The bouncer is always very nice and keeps the right crowd in the bar. Angelica, a bartender has also been very kind and informative and has made us feel welcomed. The Malibu pineapple was also delicious ❤️😊

Good beer on tap, and lots of wholesome queer punk energy. I've never ran into any haters here, just good vibes.

I was slightly hesitant after reading previous reviews mentioning negative experiences with a male bouncer, but I had no problems with that (the female bouncer on Sunday just checked my ID and reminded me that it's a queer space and cash only.) I felt welcome as a very straight looking gay/aroace man. The draft beer selection is pretty good.

One of my absolute favorite bars. Great drinks, safe atmosphere, good music, community events, queer vibes, and the cover is usually worth it on the times it's applied. Even has a nice patio. Good music most of the time. Overall an amazing spot.

I loved the vibe here sooo much. The drinks and music were amazing. The bartender was so nice, too!! My sapphic ass was in heaven and I’ll def come back next time I’m in SF. ***CASH ONLY*** was the only downside, imo, but they did have an ATM inside. NOTE: I saw some reviews about men not feeling welcome here or having issues with the bouncer, but my AMAB (queer) best friend was me and loved it, too. We personally experienced no issues, felt welcomed, & had a great ass time. We were told it was a lesbian bar before entering — which is why we were there lol — but I felt that was completely appropriate and I actually appreciated that.

Wonderful bartenders, enthusiastic management, friendly and protective bouncer, I really enjoyed my time here. There's not many bars like this where I find other people to dance with, but I had so much fun and I was quite pleased with the pleasant energy of the crowd! It is a cash only bar, but there is an ATM machine, just as you walk in. The bouncer also does a good job in an attempt to make sure those coming in, are appropriate attending a "lesbian" bar. I'm looking forward to going again!

I only ordered a few beers the hen house which is pretty good. Really sucks that they don't accept Visa MasterCard and they are cash only. Had to help a friend with cash so they didn't get ripped off at the ATM or scammed. 2025 I think? It's time you can accept credit cards and pay taxes on that money. Nothing worse going to a bar and having to either leave finding an ATM or using a janky one inside. That's why the door guy asked if you've been there before and lets you know it's cash only. Carry on tho maybe one day we'll be back but not the vibe we really care for.

This is my 2nd time coming into this bar. I like the lesbian vibe although I’m a gay male. I’ve never been interrogated or questioned when I attempt to walk in. Just odd. I’ve been reading other reviews. I’d give 5-stars but it’s “Cash Only” Standard bar but with a cool, chill vibe.

Who knew that the L in LGBT would be discriminatory towards gay men. My friend and I were very excited to visit the "only lesbian bar" in SF but were told by the white male bouncer that we would make the females uncomfortable as if we would be interested lol just go to Castro where all are accepted. I wish I could give zero stars. Low and behold after leaving skylark (neighboring bar) the bouncer said we could come in, boy bye this is everything against all gay spaces. I'd definitely skip everytime I'd pass by and this is coming from a SF local.

The server with the braids was so nice, gave me my modelo quickly and I tipped her accordingly. No complaints there. The dude checking IDs is also very sweet always. However, the girl with straight dark hair has a big attitude. I am a newly 21 girl and didn’t know you couldn’t bring your drink in front of the bar. I wouldn’t even have minded having my drink taken away if she had politely told me it wasn’t allowed. It was only $5 after all! She proceeded to accuse me of threatening the livelihood of a queer bar, as if I wasn’t a lesbian myself. She also asked me if I was from here, which why would that even matter? You’re lame for that haha. Didn’t appreciate that at all, I won’t be coming back again for solely that reason. The bar is always empty every time I peek in on weekends anyways so I don’t know why she’s driving away customers like this lmao. Very lame behavior girl get a grip!!!

I went to this place because it was my sister’s birthday. They would not allow me in saying it was a ladies bar. I had went there the year before for my sister’s wife birthday. The bouncer was rude and kept saying I could not stand in front of the bar. I was standing there waiting for my sister and her wife to come. The bouncer during my waiting period allowed cis males to enter that she knew. After she kept turning away any group with men in it. Then the bartender and the bouncer cussed me out while I waited on the sidewalk for my sister and her wife to find parking. This place is toxic I would rather go to the DMV than this establishment.

The white man at the door was so discriminatory. He started by asking if we knew what kind of bar it was and began to tell us how all men suck. He made so many assumptions about me and the people I was with. He was cold rude and mean. Very unwelcoming. He needs to remeber he is in the mission which is a brown neighborhood.

Every time I come to this bar there’s an issue getting in. “Do you know what type of bar this is?” I do and thought I would be welcomed since I’m part of the lgbtq+ communtiy. I’m trans and masc presenting and the bouncers take it upon themselves to determine what my business is being there. God forbid any one one other than a stereotypical looking woman or lesbian want a drink.

👎👎👎 Would have liked to try it out but they discriminate based on appearance and don't let certain people in based on how they look or identify. Racist, sexist and discriminatory. Don't know how this is allowed in 2025.

Walken to this bar for the 1st time. I have been going there for 40years! The very large young person who was getting said, this is a lesbian bar. That's why I went there!!when she exclaimed that was for lesbians, I explained that I love lesbians, I am gay. She took that to a discounting level and refused me!!
