Moya Cafe San Francisco Reviews
Highest quality Ethiopian food in the city. I have only ordered the vegetarian options before, but I can say with certainty their veggie sampler, shiro, and mushroom tibs are the very best you will find in San Francisco. Their Injera is also better than most other establishments.
Love the vegan sampler they serve here - the veggies are seasoned so well 🤤 🌿 I get delivery from here all the time but I went to the restaurant last week. It's a really great interior that's clean. The staff were attentive and friendly. And of course the food itself was yummy.
The best Ethiopian food I’ve ever had in a very relaxed setting
Stumbled upon this place by accident. The BEST Ethiopian food by far!!! So fresh and delicious. I had the Vegetarian platter with EXTRA homemade injera bread. It is fermented and gluten free. So good for the belly. I took extra home and will make “burritos” with it. The owner is an incredible lady. She often gives boxes of food to homeless folks in the community. You can tell she makes her food with love. 💗
got a couple of things to share with 3 people, mushroom tibsi was so so good!!
Amazing food, relaxing environment, and wonderfully nice service! I will return
So delicious, I can’t recommend it enough! The mushrooms were the favorite, but the chicken and vegetables were also great. The bread is done perfectly
I've only ordered takeout a couple times, but I'm a huge fan! The vegan platter is perfect
Amazing food, simple atmosphere, really good value (almost cheap)! I highly recommend this place, sort of a hole in the wall which I believe is a family-owned small business.
I got off late from work and had missed my dinner. This restaurant smelled so good walking by I had to go in. I simply asked for something cheap for me and easy for them to make cuz they were close to closing. The food I got was simply amazing. I can't explain how much I enjoyed this food. The woman working was friendly and beyond nice. This was such an unexpected find I'm still in a lightweight shock. I will definitely be going back for more and I encourage anyone hesitant to just walk by and smell the food as you pass. It's so much better than it smells! Thank you again!
My go to for whenever I want a quick and satisfying meal. While Ethiopian may not be for everyone, it really should be. This neighborhood staple makes me happy to call this area home.
I have never been disappointed after choosing Moya. The only thing I would change would be their hours so I could enjoy their food more often.
Moya is a superb spot for Ethiopian food in this part of the city. Came here after another spot nearby was closed unexpectedly and so glad we did. We came right as they opened for dinner so the service was quick and easy. The food came out in less than ten minutes and what a feast it was. The vegan sampler platter was enormous contrary to the photo of it looking like a grain bowl. Everything on it from the greens to the lentils was full of flavor and absolutely delicious. Enough to feed 2+ people for sure. I also had ordered a spicy tofu dish as well and THAT was something else. I don't see tofu being used often in Ethiopian restaurants but this was really a hit. Savory, spicy, and filling. Our meal came with a side of injera and I was shocked at how fast it came out too. The quality of the injera was great too and made for the perfect vessel to get all the tasty food in our mouths.
As a tourist from Illinois who was fiending for Ethiopian food, Moya did not disappoint. I’ve only had Ethiopian food three times in my life: once when I was 16 in Milwaukee, another when I was 21 in Nashville, and now at 27, I got the chance to have it in San Francisco. The service is top-tier, the kik alicha was flavorful and filling, and the vibe was great. If I’m ever in SF again, this is the first place I’ll go. Women-owned, affordable, and quality.
The food was amazing. Gluten free injera was freshly made and came with small extra cost. Vegan sampler was so good. I would even recommend not getting any meat and sharing two samplers.
Sooo goood! Lots of delicious vegan and vegetarian options as well!!
If you haven't had Ethiopian before, do yourself a favour and drop by this little restaurant. Has a little cafe-esq vibe, do note if it gets busy there may be a bit of a wait while they prep and cook everything to order. Don't forget to get some extra injera (Ethiopian fermented teff flatbread), it's soft and fluffy and has a bit of an acidic tang to it! Not to mention is goes well with all the curries and dishes! If you are unsure and have extra folks to share, get the the combo platter. Don't forget to eat it properly with your hands! The staff here are most lovely, and you can tell they put a lot of heart into the food they make!
I had to stay at the All Star to keep an eye on my old palette K Ĺoompatata from Nairobi, because she was just released from the hospital and needed a night watchman. Tata tells me the food from the Moya Restaurant a block away is worthy of a visit so I sent a runner to bring back whatever the special of the day is. I don't know what the the food was but it was amazingly delicious with simple local ingredients, and wonderful spice flavors of lands far off. Would I recommend Moya...Yes! Would I recommend a stay at the All Star...No! Moya Restaurant ☆☆☆☆☆
Yeahhhh this was a good one. I enjoy Ethiopian restaurants and its always the vegetarian sampler platter I order. Yum. At first I was concerned because I thought there was a piece of feta cheese in it. I made sure it was all vegan and the Head Chef said it was only tofu, or soybeans technically speaking. So yep it was 100% vegan and that matters for some people. I'll be back again for another experience. Thank you Moya!!!

Quiet, unassuming, delicious Ethiopian cuisine. Order at the counter and they'll either take it to your table or you can take it out. All the food is great, I'd recommend the Doro Wot and the veggie combo. Hidden gem!
So yummy!!! We got the veggie sampler and doro and soga tibs. Everything was amazing, plenty of injera. Service was fast and easy to order.
The lady here, who I believe is the owner, was friendly and great. On a cool day, the inside of this restaurant was sweltering, too warm for me. They had a dedicated vegan option, which is nice to see. This was my first exposure to ethiopian food. It is not my favorite cuisine I’ve realized, but I’m glad to have tried it here. The rolled bread is quite sour, may be an acquired taste, but so pillowy soft.
Amazing Ethiopian food! We got the vegetarian samplers, the chicken and the beef. Everything was delicious and really well packaged for delivery. The injera was so fresh, and the perfect accompaniment to all the tasty dishes. Mel was also super friendly, helpful and kind. Strongly recommend/will be back!
I rarely write positive experiences, but I've been going here three times, and for the amount of food and flavor they give for the price, it's a 5/5. I've only eaten Ethiopian food four times including here. Very good place to go for first timers.
Excellent Ethiopian food at a very affordable price, incredible service, and lots of vegan options. We got the vegan sampler for 3 of us, and added the tofu tibs and mushroom tibs. I haven't seen tofu tibs or mushroom tibs offered at any other Ethiopian place and both were excellent. Highly recommend.
Moya is truly a must-try! This was unlike any other Ethiopian restaurant we’ve experienced. The injera had a wonderful chewy texture that stood out right away. Every dish had a comforting, homemade feel and was prepared in a much healthier way with noticeably less oil and butter. The vegetarian dishes especially impressed us — lighter in flavor yet with a satisfying, denser texture that made them unique and delicious. The meat dishes were excellent — flavorful without being too sweet and served in generous portions. We also appreciated that everything was less salty, allowing the natural flavors to shine through. A refreshing and memorable dining experience — highly recommend!

Food was tasty. The injera was cheap, otherwise I would have given 5 stars.
Main Points: 1. The Injera is delicious. 2. So many great veg options. My dish had a side of collard greens and it was the star of the show. 3. You get a PLATE of food and what feels like a bucket of injera. This alone is a reason for me to come again. 4. Service is incredibly quick and I was chowing down in <10 mins of sitting down. 5. I ordered the doro tibs with medium spice and it was incredibly mild. I was bummed because this tasted like a generic homestyle chicken dish. Aka: this was tasty but forgettable. 6. Don’t order the tea since it isn’t anything special. Not worth $$. TL;DR Even though Moya isn’t 5 stars, it’s well worth the trip (especially if you choose the vegetarian and vegan options).
+Great food. A little expensive but fair prices -Terrible ambience and mediocre service. =Next time I’m getting take out!
Individuals with trypophobia must beware: the spongy injera served as the perfect vessel to scoop up all the delicious flavours of the vegan platter and the doro tibs. Never had Ethiopian food but this was a great foray into it taste-wise.
Came here on a Monday afternoon and the whole place was empty at 1 pm! Food: I got the shiro and it was quite a large plate and I definitely underestimated it at first. I loved the variety in flavors on the place from the injera to the chickpea soup to the salad it was a medley of textures. It tasted super fresh too and we got a lot of extra bread too! Service: Super quick 10 minutes or so for food to come out and the food was super warm. You order food at the front and they call it out. Ambiance: Very homey place with nice decorations and a tv that played repeating loops of people dancing and of nature. Felt like a good place to get work done. Overall, enjoyed the food and experience and really cozy vibes.
Modern take on Ethiopian, offering choose-your-base accompaniments (injera, brown rice, salad) to classic vegan and meat mains. Siga Tibs, sumptuously spicy, is generously portioned and full-on flavor.

Delicious Ethiopian food with a good variety of options - it was difficult to decide so I went with the veggie sampler and it was a great mix of everything. The staff even gave our group a sample of a dish we wanted to try. The meals are a little pricey but the portions are large and come with lots of injera. We left very full and will definitely come back!

What a home-cook food! Vege sampler is the most authentic ethiopian food you can taste here. The sauce is nice and thick, so comforting! Collard green has nice sour flavor to it! The complexity harmony of multi-layer spices, the contrast of tastes when paired with authentic injera make the foods even more perfect.

One of the worst Ethiopian restaurants I've ever been to. As a DMV native, I've had a lot of Ethiopian food but nothing as tasteless as moya. I'm flabbergasted by these reviews, I don't know how I ate at the same restaurant. Well the kitchen itself is cute and the service is friendly. The food is tasteless, overcooked and well below average. As with most Ethiopian restaurants, the portion sizes are gigantic. So you really don't need to order much to feed a small village, but that village may not want to eat the food.
The worst experience! I walked in, waited to either be seated or to order food for a food 5 minutes. Then went to use the bathroom since no one was available to assist. As soon as I head over the bathroom, the lady jumped out of nowhere and rudely, says “ BATHROOM NOT WORKING BYE” like dude that’s how you trea customers??!! Yikes! Her hair was a mess, like wear hairnet geez!! Gross attitude!
