The Counter San Jose Reviews
the most flavorful and upscale spot i have ever been to. veggie burger is also incredible, not many spots that can do both. sides are outstanding i love the shoestring fries and the sweet potato fries are done right; no grease. altogether a great american style restaurant with all fresh ingredients and a dependable menu that even has a blank build your own menu where you check the ingredients you’d like. amazing
This is a fantastic spot to eat! The food quality is excellent—fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. The atmosphere is inviting and comfortable, making it a great place to relax and enjoy your meal. The only downside is that it’s on the pricier side; I spent around $32 on a burger and sweet potato fries. But if you don’t mind spending a bit more for quality and ambiance, this place is definitely worth a visit! Also the parking is free for the first 2 hours.
After not getting proper service at another restaurant we decided to walk around until we stumbled upon the Counter. They were very welcoming and friendly even though they were closing soon. Johnathan our server was attentive and always asked how we were doing. I loved this experience and I highly recommend the minis sliders and the shoestring fries with a chocolate shake. I would give this place more stars if it would let me!! Thank you again for making our night :)
Make your own burger! At its best one can make a nice burger, it's a nice way to put the things you want in your burger, they give you a sheet of paper and you pick ingredients and the sauce and the bun and the proteins. It's actually a fun activity. They have separate kids menus and it's pretty much like McDonald's. It's for families adults and anybody who wants to enjoy a burger and beer.
Always had a wonderful experience here. Fresh and great quality ingredients. They are very generous with their toppings, hence it is easy to turn your dish into a huge meal, especially if you add any sides. So, be thoughtful of what you want on your burger. This location is very clean and pleasant to be at. The staff is very attentive and friendly.
Great burger place in a great location. I got the Gouda Bison burger and sweet potato fries and they were both tasty. They have many organic foods and a wide variety of choices. There is even an option to customize your own burger from choosing the bun, to the meat, to the toppings, to the sauce. The service is good and this place is perfect for the whole family.
Don't remember how I found this place on my list of places to visit but I went today and it is strongly OK. It's not bad but isn't good enough to warrant the prices. Not to say I didn't like it but for the cost I'd visit sparsely at best. Overall it's nice in a good location so maybe a good visit if your just exploring the area.
Although the burger was fine, it's a little pricey. Burgers start at about $16 and upwards. You can create your own custom burger with whatever toppings you want for no additional charge. I did like the garlic fries, these were delicious. The staff was super nice and friendly, gave recommendations and helped us choose. Lots of nice seating area outside and inside. Was overall a good experience.
Review meant for vegetarians: The Counter's concept of customizing your own burger through a form is truly amazing. The Santana Row outlet impressed with its cordial staff and excellent service. Opting for a vegan patty, we selected our preferred veggies and sauces, resulting in a delicious burger. The overall experience was awesome, making it a must-try for those who appreciate personalized and tasty burger options. PS: Like the review if it helped make a decision.
Great burger joint and I like the make your own burger offering. There are a lot of topping options that are free, while there are other premium add-ons. Service was good. I had a lot of questions about a coupon and my server was gracious in answering my questions and calculated everything as expected when the bill arrived.
Santana Row has a lot of places to eat, so wanted to try The Counter. Went after the lunch rush, so it was a bit slow. The fireball milkshake was the best part of the meal. The burger was dry and overcooked, with the fried onion strings sitting in a pool of grease. The service was okay, but the additional $4 "small business" service fee - but The Counter is a burger chain... With so many other great places in Santana Row, this was disappointing
3 of us stopped today and only one of us ordered a custom burger w string fries. My wife and I ordered side dishes since we both were not hungry. She wings and I ordered chicken strip w a side sweet potato fries! The food came quick but I was surprised the bill was nearly $80 dollars ! They had added about $11 dollars for tip automatically but it felt like too costly specially with a drunk and loud female at the bar who was chatting w the staff! I cannot justify a return visit!
So, I've eaten here numerous times. Usually the burgers are very tasty. This time it was very bland, almost tasteless. Maybe they forgot to season it. I added a few toppings: lettuce, tomato 🍅, pickles, jalapeños, and thousand island dressing. All that was fine, but I chose the gluten-free bun. I would NOT recommend it. Tasteless and it literally crumbled while trying to eat the burger (see photo). I dont eat gluten-free often, but I've had other buns at other establishments that didn't fall apart. They should find another brand because their current one isn't cutting it. The regular and sweet potato fries were very good. Hot and crisp. Server could have been more attentive. Not sure I'd come back here, but its worth a try.
I had a very bad experience the last time and I will not be going back again. It takes a lot for me to say that. I have tried it a few times and I really wanted to like it and have a good experience the last time, about 10 days ago at this point. The hamburger was extremely overcooked, both, and the 1/2 lb patty was the same size as the 1/3 lb patty except that it cost much more. The two hamburgers were both very overcooked, and unenjoyable, when I asked for rare, and the bill was much bigger than usual, without any breakdown. When we mentioned it to the waiter, who I think is more like the bartender or something like that, he barely listened, and he said "Oh I am sorry" and quickly walked away. Oh, I am sorry, but I will never ever go back there or recommend it to my friends and family.
I sat at the bar, alone for a meal, and was greeted by Oscar. As this review nose-dives into the dirt, I want to say upfront that Oscar was fantastic. It was not his fault they were out of stock of the mixed drink I requested. It was not Oscar's fault that the diet Coke was brixed horribly and tasted like 80% syrup. I enjoyed customizing my burger. My burger was delicious, and I would return if it were not for the ambush service charge. It was extremely convenient to only mention this when I was finished and handed my bill. I have a hard and fast rule that unannounced service charges are unacceptable. If I had known upfront, I would have chosen not to visit. Despite the fee being a mere $4.94, it pissed me off. I vote with my money, and because of this ambush service charge, I will NEVER return here. It is sad actually because I am a burger guy, and they have a good burger system in place. I would have easily been a repeat customer again and again.... but that is forever lost to a 18% service charge.
