Bad Ass Coffee San Juan Reviews
Absolutely incredible experience at Café Manolín in San Juan. I ordered the chuleta kan kan and flan de queso, and I can honestly say this was the best pork chop I’ve had in my life. The chuleta kan kan was massive, perfectly seasoned, and cooked exactly right. The crispy skin had that ideal crunch, while the meat was juicy and flavorful all the way through. It came with mofongo and a fresh salad, and everything tasted authentic and homemade. You can tell this is Puerto Rican food done the right way. The flan de queso was the perfect finish smooth, rich, and not overly sweet. Exactly what you want after a big traditional meal. On top of the amazing food, the service was outstanding. Friendly, attentive, and welcoming from start to finish. If you’re visiting Puerto Rico for the first time and want a true introduction to local cuisine, this is the place. Authentic, generous portions, great atmosphere, and unforgettable flavors. Highly recommend. I will absolutely be back.
This place was recommended by a local and I’m so happy we came. If I could give it more stars I would. Lots of locals in an energetic environment with amazing food. We had the chicken and beef Mofongo with beans and rice. For a starter we had plantain soup. Everything was delicious and I wish I could have eaten it all. We’ll definitely come back the next time we visit Puerto Rico.
I had a fantastic experience at Café Manolín thanks to Yandel, our waiter. The restaurant was extremely busy, yet he handled everything with calm professionalism, efficiency, and a genuine smile. He made us feel welcomed, checked on us at the perfect moments, and ensured our order was exactly right. It’s not easy to deliver this level of service in such a fast-paced environment, but Yandel truly stood out. Exceptional customer service like his is what keeps people coming back. Highly recommended!
Ordered the Chuleta Kan Kan and it was perfection. Huge portion with beautiful seasoning and great crunch and texture. Attentive service and a long wait for large parties. I was a party of one so I was easily seated. The AC was on and it was a bit cold indoors so bring a shawl. Gracias por su atencion
Amazing breakfast spot! Everything was fresh and delicious. 😋🍳 It’s hard to find good coffee with almond milk sometimes, but they nailed it. ☕🥛 We had a great time! 😄❤️ thank you 🙏
I absolutely love this spot. Nothing super fancy—and that’s exactly the charm. Café Manolín has one of the best menus in Old San Juan: inexpensive, comforting, and consistently tasty. The real star for me? THE AVENA (oatmeal)—hands down the best I’ve ever had. I honestly go here just for that. It’s that good. I made a quick stop before heading to the airport, and it was the perfect way to end the trip—fast, satisfying, and full of local flavor. A true Old San Juan classic that never disappoints. 🥣☕✨
Loved the counter seating and the food was solid too. I had the chuleta (pork chop) with rice and beans. It was delicious. The tres leches wasn’t very good but I had a craving for something sweet so I tried it.
Great local/spanish food, good recommendations by our server, Caldo Gallego and Mofongo de camarones with habichuelas and Amarillos. Service was good and food was delicious.
In Manolín you really get to experience the true local vibe — both in the food and in the service. The place is fantastic. It has that authentic atmosphere where you instantly feel part of the community. At times, local performers even come inside to sing and put on a show for the guests, which makes the whole experience even more special. Totally worth a visit.
We were on the hunt for affordable Puerto Rican food in Old San Juan—and we found a hidden gem! This place is absolutely amazing. There’s no big sign out front, and while GPS said it was on the right, it’s actually on the left. Just look for a purple building with a small sign—that’s your spot. The vibe inside is warm and cozy, like a mix between a café and a diner. The prices are super reasonable, and the menu has a great variety of Puerto Rican favorites. We ordered the 10 oz churrasco and wow—it was cooked to perfection. I’d read that this spot has the best churrasco on the island, and I have to agree. If you’re in Old San Juan and craving authentic, affordable Puerto Rican food, this place is a must-visit. Highly recommend!
Manolín Café was the perfect taste of San Juan during our cruise stop. The place was buzzing with locals, the line moved quickly, and the energy felt authentic. I had the mofongo with fried pork—crispy, garlicky, and packed with flavor. It was exactly the kind of local experience you hope to find between ports.
Best mofongo I have had. Worth the wait, a must go if you’re in San Juan.
Great local food (Mofongo) at affordable prices. Lots of locals at this restaurant, which is always a sign of great food at affordable prices. A short walk from cruise port, with ample seating capacity.

Our food was out of this world and the wine pairing elevated our experience to the next level. The service was exceptional, thank you Anna! This was a special treat but way worth the cost.
Café Manolín is a gem in Old San Juan! Super chill spot with classic Puerto Rican food that hits the spot. They serve up authentic island comfort food with fast service and generous portions. Don’t leave without drinks & dessert too; coffee with brown sugar, “china”(fresh orange juice), flan & a shot of local Rum made this a great way to kick off our adventure in PR.
Great, reasonable priced food with a diner/neighborly atmosphere. Great friendly service! We went there twice in our half week vacation and touring Old San Juan. Great daily specials!

Like all my reviews, context is key. Cafe Manolin came recommended by a local. It's a very walkable distance from the cruise ship ports in San Juan. 10 mins boat to door, maybe a half mile or slightly less. Upon entering you'll see a dated interior packed with locals and tourists. The staff are busy and hurried but friendly at the same time. Don't go here for a fancy date night, it is not that place. It is however a great spot for a genuine local food experience with indoor seating and full service bar to go with your diner like food experience. I asked for a meal that had a taste of everything and like most places, it has the starch based plantain base, sort of like mashed potato but stuffed in this case with beef, chicken and shrimp. There is a side of simple white rice and small pieces of sweeter fried plantain with a cup of beans. They also had a nice pina colada which is the local drink invented up the street in the early 1960s. The meat on this dish was all tender and juicy (the bbq/fried chicken options appeared to be drier but didn't try, just observed those). The dish along with pina colada and two bottled waters and tip was $45. Dish was enough for a couple to share. So, for a dive type diner with good local food, this is a good spot. Not amazing but there was random live guitar and a good local vibe. Definitely a top spot if you just have half a day to get a local vibe and legit food, if that's your day then go for it.
Definitely a San Juan vib. Had breakfast. Lots of bar seating and a few tables. Nothing fancy. Lots of waiters getting ready for a big lunch crowd.

As Asian tourists from Canada we tried local diner and loved the experience. The menu has a long options and must try is the fresh orange juice! It might not be for everyone but always pick your favourite ingredients if you are not as adventurous as your travel companion. Spicy 🌶️ sauce was nice too!!
Enjoy the few breakfast options Sunday morning in Old San Juan. If you are not good at Espanol, the experience may not go that well.
Was excited to eat here, but honestly very disappointed. Ordered the plantain with pork and the beef & onions. The pork was very very dry, I liked the flavor of it and the plantains under, but entire dish was dry. The beef was okay, like a thin hamburger with some sautéd onions. Great service, place full of people - we ordered the dishes based on wait staff recommendation. Unfortunately, would not return.
We sat at the counter which was tight. The waitress didn’t tell me switching rice and beans for mofongo was up priced. The mofongo dry and hard. The waitress forgot to upgrade my husband’s rice and beans which was a good thing because the rice and beans were better. His king fish and plantains were good.

I would actively dissuade people from coming here because the food is bad- the mofongo was dry and flavorless, as was the rice and fried pork. Even the onions were raw with little or no pickling. I tried the churrasco as well, which had a strange, almost sour flavor. This doesn’t happen often, but it was so off putting and disappointing I wanted to warn people waiting in line to go elsewhere. As the for the service and vibe- our server was sassy when we didn’t know what a Puerto Rican empanada was and the AC was so high it was uncomfortably cold. I’ve heard it’s difficult to find good food in the old town but I would recommend going somewhere with better service and vibe at least.
Food might be good if it were served hot. Looks good. Atmosphere is perfect for what you would expect for local counter restaurant has a few tables in the back.
Amazing cultural experience- lots of people and laughter and a gentleman playing the guiro! My friend came for the mafongo (I’m honestly not a fan or the best judge) but in all honesty, it was a lil’ dry! I gave it a try but it didn’t make a “liker” let alone, lover of mafongo. We did go to another spot in San Juan and theirs was very saucy… made a difference to me! But look, clearly I am not a mofongo expert. Café Manolín was a great atmospheric experience in VSJ!

The fried pork mofongo was not impressive. Very dry. Even if it doesn’t come with sauce, the fried pork itself was dry. The mofongo was dry, too. The waiting service was also poor. Won’t come back again.
