THE best homemade ice cream in South OC!! If you're craving a hot fudge sundae that will blow your mind, this is the place to go. Fresh homemade ice cream, plenty of traditional hot fudge, nuts, whipped cream and don't forget that cherry! Perfect combination in every bite, just perfect. The staff was super friendly and they've been doing this in the same location since 1972. Took a quart home and of course we will be back Thank you Hans for a blast back to when quality ingredients and love goes into your ice cream, makes you feel like a kid again.
This is a proper old style ice cream parlor, in taste, atmosphere, and price Great family friendly spot. Good seating, three booths and several smaller tables. Shared an ice cream sundae because that's what you do in an ice cream parlor! We ordered at the counter and they brought it to us at the table. Super friendly staff and try the butterscotch! It was delicious and best of all they still have old style prices. Only $7 for a two scoop sundae.
Good decent amount of icecream you will get. Good quality ice cream. Lots of flavors. Don't hesitate to ask to get different flavors in small or medium cup. Sample option is not available. Lid for the cup is available if cant able to finish in sitting.
The best place for ice cream! I've been going to this place for more than 15 years. They have delicious interesting flavors. I LOVE THE BLACK LICORICE ICE CREAM! My family enjoys the purple yam and the berry flavor. The black licorice ice cream is a unique flavor that I believe has many benefits I say to myself. ;)
I had high expectations because “homemade” is in the name. I would have been disappointed if it didn’t have the smooth, rich, extra creamy texture that I was expecting. Also, homemade ice cream has a rich sweetness that’s missed in mass-produced ice cream. This place did not disappoint. It tasted slow-churned, thick, and creamy just like I had hoped. I couldn’t decide which flavor to get since there were so many, but I decided on Peach. It was a very refreshing summer choice. I highly recommend this place to anyone in the area, and it might even be worth traveling to even if you’re not nearby.
Probably one of the best ice cream places in South OC. Came here a handful of times as a kid and wanted to come back ever since. The ice cream is really good but I ordered the almond-covered frozen banana (pictured) very good small business, perfect for dates, family outings, or a place to write your novel in a booth. The frozen banana was FROZEN, pretty tough to eat but after a bit it was great. The interior is really charming and the vibes are immaculate. What are you doing reading this? Come and get some ice cream!
Alright!! These guys have to get 5 stars!!! Just in town for a couple of days for work and was looking for a treat after dinner and ran across them. Store has a great interior vintage vibe! Too bad it’s in a strip mall….but oh well! Great selection of flavors all of which sounded good! Talked to Alexandra and she gave me a great idea! For coming here on a whim couldn’t ask for anything better!! Great stop all around!!
This place was miles beyond what I was expecting. The employees were great, the variety was incredible, and the food was excellent. We had two shakes and an egg salad sandwich. The portions were generous and the cost of the sandwich was well worth what we got. It was also delicious, with a freshly made taste and texture versus a premade or bowled egg salad. Definitely going to return
The best and creamist ice cream around. Unique flavors rotated thru so everytime is a new experience. Generous scoops too!
Been coming here since the 90's best place nothing can compare to the competitors, my top choice for ice cream
Omg!!! I have been a fan of Hans since it was Swensens over 30 years ago. When the family bought the shop and continued and improved the ice cream, it was a god send. My father and I love this place. He loves the drumsticks, and I love the mint n chip munchies. If you love ice cream come here.
BEST BANANA SPLIT IVE EVER HAD! *super friendly lady *not too sweet *not soaked in sugar coating/artificial syrup Banana split: You can order traditional which is the good ol chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry flavor. OR You can pick 3 of your own. I had “butter brustle, vanilla honey, and coffee cookie” with all the topping that comes with it. Topping: strawberry, pineapple, cookie, chocolate syrup, almond, etc Surprisingly cherry wasn’t soaked in sugar nor did it taste artificial like most places! The strawberry puree like thing also tasted more like fruit and less like sugar syrup or jam! Added with kind explanation and smile just elevated the experience over the top! Thank you! Ps. They also have sandwiches, salad and coffee. Will be back to try them later!
Best ice cream in town!! Can't go wrong with their sandwiches and soups as well!!
We were shopping at Vons and this place stood out to us, so we stopped by for sandwiches and ice cream. Cute little place with yummy treats!
Kids get free ice cream with kids hot dog and chips meal. Cute family friendly place, and ice cream is good too! We didn't try any fun big ice creams, but we saw alot of cool stuff around us! We'll be back to try more for sure!
One of the few truly great I’ve cream shops left in a wasteland of mass production. If you like small patch high quality ice cream drop by and satisfy your need. I had the Banana Almond and the Coffee Oreo this time. Superb!
Hans- creamy ice cream. Lots of different flavors and it changes!! How exciting, especially since it is so good. This place is located within a shopping plaza a few blocks from south coast mall. It is in the same plaza as a thai good place I like to frequent (shout out to George's!!). Been here many times, this time going for ube ice cream. Love this flavor, it is so good left with a pint of it. If you are the type of person who wants a bargain and can be patient go for the pint size. They pack that thing till it bursts, such a deal since I think it is like getting 2-single scoop ice cream cones. I mean I still was able to quickly finish the pint (within 3 days) but soooooo good!!! Awesome during the summer days, but I eat ice even on rainy days haha.
Place makes their own ice cream love their sundaes and their sandwiches are delicious great place to enjoy lunch and have some delicious treats highly recommend it
One of the last surviving Swenson’s Ice Cream shops! Make sure to get the chocolate fudge sundaes with rice Krispy’s. Yep - you heard right - rice Krispy cereal. It will blow your mind!
Simply the best ice cream I ever had! Home made and authentic. You will love it if you have a passion for ice cream 😍🍧🍨
Excellent service and very tasty sandwiches.
I’m just going to say that all ice cream places should hope to be half of Hans’ You’re amazing I love all the flavours
One of the Best ice cream Ive ever had
My kids LOVE it here. Ice cream is always creamy and very tasty. Price is reasonable and have decent portion sizes. We love that it's still an old school parlor were we can sit and enjoy each other's company. Yes I recommend Hans ice cream
We love to get gelato in Italy, but this is probably the closest ice cream to that in the States! It’s so creamy and delicious. I got the double fudge chocolate and loved it!!
Good ice cream and loaded! Shout out to the 2 young men staff—they were nice and we had a great little chat.
Really great place for ice cream, cool flavors that are unique and really well made
Has great time cream. If your a 1 flavor pallette, and not willing to give other flavors a try, this place is not for you.
Cool little ice cream shop little wide variety of flavors & great pricing. My fiancé loves coming here for a sweet treat & her taste
GF used to come here years ago so she dragged me. Got a club sandwich, she had a French dip. Our drinks came in frosted mugs, Unfortunately by the time I took a pic the frost was gone. Afterwards she got an oreo ice cream for desert. Quaint little shop. Staff was great.
Old school ice cream place, serving ice cream and food. There are interesting ice cream flavors like Thai tea and cookie butter. Good place to go for quick dessert.
Good ice cream not bad. They just didn't have many flavors as they ran out of them.
very popular ice-cream place, like a small restaurant, very crowded at weekend night. provide some tea flavor ice-cream also.
The ice cream was good. Very disappointed there are no samples here. You’re rolling the dice if you’re not already familiar with the product. It ruined the experience for me.
Great Ice cream 🍦 Family oriented. Good size Sandwiches and very friendly staff.
Grabbed a Rueben from here for lunch. It was a little confusing at first as they don't really have a food menu hanging but they do have paper copies you can peruse. It was a bit pricey for really what it was and took a strange amount of time given I was essentially the only customer for a while. The sandwich itself was average, certainly nothing I need to get again. Service was SUPER nice. While I didn't get ice cream, they did have some interesting flavor and cone options so would consider coming back for this. Old school ice cream parlor vibes in a way. Super accessible.
Serving Orange County from their Santa Ana location since 1972 Hans' Homemade Ice Cream prides itself on making every flavor on-site, a use of Cream from local dairies imparting good density in classic flavors one is unlikely to find at spots like Wanderlust or Jeni’s. Unfortunately not offering tastes, arrival just past 1:30pm finding two staff members baking Cookies without any other patrons present, $7.70 yielded two scoops including Butter Pecan with less sweetness than most plus Vanilla Caramel Wafer that adds bits of textural variance to traditional swirl.
Been here a couple times and only get the dipped, almond crunch cone. It’s pretty good for $6.95. The owners spend little to no time maintaining this location. It’s too bad they don’t invent into presentation of the interior which is glib, stale, old and has a stench to it. I know they’d say they’re focused on ice cream which is mid tier at best. If you want top tier ice cream, hit up Salt & Straw.
I’ve been going to this location for 30+ years. Have taken most friends and relatives too. My 2 daughters have great memories going there since they were little. We recently moved to Riverside, however, we continue going 1-2 a month. Every time we go we see new employees (most of the time young girls - in their early twenties- who either do not receive good training or management is not taking the time to supervise who are they hiring. Most of the time, tables remain dirty for over 10 minutes even when new customers are already seated and there’s not that many people. Employees are most of the time working very slow and don’t have an urgency for making sure customers receive their ice cream in a timely manner. I have asked three employees in three different occasions to please wear a glove when touching my peeled banana after they handle money, sometimes they have a bad attitude, and tables are most of the time dirty! Last night we went, @ around 8pm, Friday 2/23/24, party of 5, got a table (completely dirty), waited for someone for almost 10 min to take our order (there’s was only 2 customers in front of us and there were 3 employees). I asked the girl to please clean our table, she said yes, took our order, we waited for other 10 min to get our ice cream and for her to clean our table. All of us got something wrong on our ice cream order even when she wrote everything down. We waited other 3-5 min to get fixed. It is not that hard to read what you write when you take an order! Management : please provide a good training to all of your new employees! Increase the salary maybe? Do whatever you need to do so you don’t start loosing loyal customers. This place is nothing compared to what it was 20 years ago. Ice cream is the best, but customer service is the worst! Will try new locations!
We wanted to like this place. Since we just moved to the neighborhood we were looking for our new spot. The place could be great but unfortunately you are welcomed by a ton of signs that say no free samples all over the place and a sign on the toppings that says "don't tap the glass it scares the ice cream. " lol. It would be funny if the other signs were not present. The staff was not really happy to be there and besides the signs the atmosphere looked like the set of the show "cheers" only nobody knows your name or cares that you are there. On to the ice cream, it has potential but is lacking sugar. Not very sweet. I had the unicorn and the cookie butter, I couldn't really tell the difference. Bruesters is much better and the staff is nice and happy. Plus, and I can't stress this enough, FREE SAMPLES!!!!!! The fact that this place didn't have free samples tells me that they don't really have faith in their product that people will buy it. Makes sense to me after I have eaten it. I will try it again in 6 months in the hopes they read this.
Ice cream quality is good. I wanted a sample of one ice cream I had never tried before. ONE sample in a flavor I thought would be amazing but wanted to be sure before I spent almost $7 on a single scoop. As told I could not sample. Asked why I couldn't try. “Covid policy”. Guess what? It’s not Covid anymore. Will never go back. Handels or pop bar for me thanks.
What kind of icecream store doesn’t let you sample? How am I supposed to know what I like if it’s my first time there ? I understand if they need to limit samples to maybe 2 or 3, but to not let your customers try it at all at an ICECREAM shop is ridiculous. Don’t know the owners problem..
Husband and I walked in. We were not welcomed in even though they were not crazy busy. Worker was making someone’s order. We were standing there ready to order but because they were taking a long time, we took a seat and patiently waited. We waited about 10 mins possibly more. Another customer walks in and immediately a worker from the back comes to take their order, not acknowledging that we were there. The worker that saw us could have told her coworker that we were there first. We got up and left, nobody said anything to us. I like to order ice cream but I won’t be coming back. Went to yogurt land instead and was welcomed immediately.
Have been coming here for years. I have always enjoyed the delicious food and the good customer service. I walked in today and the place was not busy there was a young lady behind the counter, giving out free samples to a couple which surprised me because they advertise no sampling. I proceeded to go to a table to dine in. There was no acknowledgment from the young lady or a young man that was just standing. They both proceeded to go to the back and I still waited and waited. Then they walked out with food for another table and they headed back still not acknowledging me. I finally got up and asked if the protocol for ordering had changed. I could tell the young lady was not happy when I asked her if the protocol for ordering food had changed. I proceeded to place my order. I inquired what type of a sandwich they had served the other customer because it looked delicious. She proceeded to respond. I wouldn’t know I didn’t make that sandwich which I found to be very rude. To the owner, you’re more than welcome to check your cameras to verify that what I’m saying is correct. It’s so sad but I don’t think I’ll be coming back to this establishment.
You are not allowed to sample any of the ice creams, and unfortunately the one I actually got was not very good.
They don’t have any customer service whatsoever, they don’t greet you, they’re not polite. Just straight up hate their lives or something. The ice cream MESSES UP your stomach like CRAZY . And i’ve tried at least 50 other ice cream shops in my entire 7 years of living here. DONT come here if you want quality ice cream!!!
