What a fun place to enjoy breakfast on the beach. We ordered the brisket hash, blt, and omlettes. The chairs on the beach are in sand, so wear appropriate shoes. They also have 2-3 tables outside that are on concrete, but those are limited. The parking is on site but is city-owned so you park in a spot and pay for parking.

Wonderful service and great food, but the best thing is the atmosphere. Visited in late October and everything felt like a slow Sunday afternoon, very relaxing with a great view of the sea and ample parking.

Leisurely came on a mid-morning weekday stroll and happened upon this little place. With child sized chairs and a beautiful view, it is worth an experience to at least come for coffee (which we did). Coffee was great. Food and drinks are a little pricey but coffee is very reasonable. Free refills. Location Is key here and the ambiance is very relaxed and laid back. Would come again!

Has become a tradition to make it to this spot whenever I’m visiting LA, and have never been disappointed. Perfect for a relaxed brunch/lunch, and coffee or beer with feet in the sand. Very good, fresh, California cuisine. And unbeatable setting/views. Just far enough down the beach from the busier/more touristy beach cafes near Venice, yet within sight of Santa Monica pier.

A great place to hang out for the day! It is right up along the Strand, and also next door to a playground for kids to enjoy. The outdoor seating has a walkway through the sand for parts of it, other parts are on a concrete patio. Worth making a reservation but they do take walk ins as well.

The smoked salmon toast is VERY good, and hefty portion. The fruit it comes with is incredibly fresh. I wouldn't recommend the smoothie -- it tasted like fruit juice / corn syrup rather than a freshly blended whole fruit. Doesn't appear to be WiFi.

This is a very popular place. The waiting time to seat is approximately 30 mins to an hour during lunch time. But it's worth the wait. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich and a cappuccino. It was real good. Good customer service, nice, pretty location. Will return again once I go back to California.

A place that reminds you of why you live in LA - owner Fred Deni is on hand, with decades of ownership behind him, to oversee a seamless operation of a staff happy to be there, too. Feet on a solid floor or at a table on the beach. The simple menu of favorites, salads & sandwiches, is capped by the best baker in town's desserts (including my favorite lemon hazelnut torte). You just want lunch and stay all day - and we always do.

We had a beautiful lunch here a few days ago. Parking was easy, sat outside under an umbrella and enjoyed the beach view. The Back to the Beach Burger was delicious. Can't wait to come back next time we're driving through!

Back on the Beach is one of the few restaurants directly on the sand in Santa Monica with a beautiful view of the ocean! It is unpretentious and the food is delicious, service friendly and great. I go there whenever I visit L.A.!

We had a lovely brunch on the beach. I loved sitting with my feet in the sand. I loved my fried polenta with eggs, spinach and mushrooms. The service was great! Parking was easy, we paid $6 for 2 hours at the adjacent beach parking lot.

The wait is worth the food and great service. Take a small walk while waiting to be seated, take pix & chill. The atmosphere is very "self care" kinda vibe. I go here on my spa days off to truly feel the luxury and natural beauty Santa Monica has to offer. The view is amazing especially on those overcasty mornings that aren't too cold or too hot. I could sit there and watch the fog melt over the palm trees and into the ocean for hours, as i do. My waiter was patient and knowledgeable about my questions and adjustments. The coffee hit the spot, not too strong and amazing taste and creaminess. I ordered the vegetarian bowl the first time i was here and now i want to make it at home, perhaps add some fish too it too. Their vegetables are very fresh and perfectly seasoned and cooked. The portion size is slightly more than i can eat in one sitting. The second time i came here i had the rainbow trout. I was able to sit outside and was surprised that the area was clean and there were no obnoxious flies (as there tends to be with beach front restaurant seating). The trout was also cooked so perfectly not too dry, very fresh, and most of the actual fish was included. It was hard to put down my meal. Overall, Excellent place! Diverse and healthy menu options. Very beach life type of place. Parking isn't too expensive surprisingly + iv never been there and seen no parking available there are always a few spots left on busy days at the right time. The huevos rancheros are tasty. The service is excellent and the scenery on the beach is beautiful. Very good for people watching. Baby friendly with my stroller and parking is $3 an hour or $12 for the whole day.

This Is a GREAT PLACE. This is not true best place to go of you’re in a rush but if you know you’ll pass by, order ahead. They are great people and the food is delicious.

There's just not many places you can go to sit literally in the sand on the beach. The food was incredibly delicious. The staff was well trained, fun, relaxed, and kind. They carry my favorite wine by the glass. No reservations...show up and wait. Their texting notifications system for when your table is ready is outstanding. Go early (right when they open), put your name in, take a short walk on the beach and then enjoy your meal under shade umbrellas (that tilt for the sun). 🌊⛱️

My new fav spot in LA! This place is located at the community center, super easy parking (~$3/hour) as there is a parking lot right at the cafe. Price of the food here were very reasonable. We got some tea and a can of flavored sparkling water and grilled shrimp for ~$28. The shrimp was really yummy! Most importantly, you get to dine right at the beach 👍 kids park right next to it, super family friendly. Will def come back!

Great atmosphere. Fairly solid food quality. A bit pricey but it's on the beach. Used to come here with Ken D and get the Fred's Salad. After his passing, now come here with my own family. Love to continue his tradition.

A perfect date spot! The food is delicious. The fruit was perfectly ripe, the scones were delicious. We got the pasta papa and the California omelette. Sooo good. We ate outside and the view is lovely. A very chill vibe. Our server Jason was awesome, very attentive and friendly. He really brightened our morning and made us feel very welcome!

We stopped here after an amazing 15 mile bike ride through the city and along the beach bike trail. The food was fresh, the breeze was perfect and you can't beat the view.

Fantastic place right on the Santa Monica state beach. The place has a cool vibe and the location is just amazing, the staff is welcoming and friendly. We ordered black bean veggie burger with crispy fries on the side and a vegetarian California omelette with salad as side. The portions are good for two people to share. Burger was good, fries were great. California omelette was one of the best omelets I have ever had. The salad dressing sauces they provided on the side were fabulous. Also, the jam and butter they gave along side bread were extremely rich in taste. Upon our request, they gave us sour dough bread. Having quality food with the view of Santa Monica state beach and sound of waves made it a great experience, would definitely come back.

Four years ago, we were traveling for a conference, and this place made an impact on me in the middle of the pandemic. Despite the craziness and ridiculous California rules all around the beach. Such as not being able to use a PUBLIC restroom! My sister and I, along with my toddler, drove around what seemed like an eternity looking for a restroom that wasn't closed or that didn't require a reservation from a restaurant. We took so long to find one that we got hungry. We stopped here to try our luck with the bathrooms, and luckily, the restaurant was open and had outdoor seating available. We were overjoyed to find this awesome spot! After relieving ourselves, we excitedly ordered the salmon and burger. They were the best meal we've had in years in the area. We made a vow to come back, and we've been back regularly when in the area ever since. I can't believe I didn't write this review sooner! Thank you to your friendly staff and awesome cooks. Can't wait to be back again.

Grabbed early dinner after a long Wednesday on the road. Frozen marg was excellent, fish tacos were good, service was very fast on a late afternoon / early evening.

I haven't been here in 10+ years but coming back today was so wonderful. I live in Texas and this was the first restaurant I wanted to visit on returning to Santa Monica. Fred Deni the owner is just so kind and a delight to talk to. The food was excellent! The grass fed burger medium rare was oh so yummy and the BananaNutella French Toast was out of this world! The French Toast was nice and thick and spongy to soak up the syrup. The outside of the French toast was just the right amount of crispy. My mouth is watering as I type this reminding me of how amazing the French Toast was. Our waiter was awesome. He's been working at the restaurant 5+yrs and was just the right amount of attentive and then gave us our space to enjoy the beach and the view and the people watching. We'll be back again soon! Quaint atmosphere, decent pricing, attentive staff, and of course, great view. There are nearby parking options that are pay to park. Consider going early or be aware that you may have to park and walk just a little bit. also consider attire as outside the floor is sand so it’s a great option to have some thing you can take off so you can feel the sand between your toes. BUT…People watching platform is on point. Now for the food…I had the Huevos Rancheros, which unfortunately I do not have a picture of because I inhaled it. It came out hot delivered straight from the kitchen. it had a crunch, a kick and nice creamy sauce along with a whole lot of flavor. I did however capture a glimpse of my slightly watered-down Bloody Mary, which is not how it came, but was because I was not as attentive to it as the staff was of me. My waiter “Eric” did an excellent job attending to multiple tables with a smile on his face- Great attitude. A variety of foods that would meet most pallets from breakfast to lunch and dinner. Great stop to take it all in. 👌🙌🤘🏼👍👍 🏖️☀️👙🌊🩳🏝️🐚

What a place! It’s right on the beach with plenty of outdoor seating. We went there on Monday - (public holiday) while driving back to San Jose from Los angels. The staff is friendly and took as in 2 mins after getting there. They have really good menu. We ordered black bean and portobello mushroom veggie burger with crispy fries, veggie omelet with side of sourdough and salad. We loved the omelet which came with butter, really good quality jam and salad dressing. Overall everything was on point and the location is just amazing. You can take a stroll on the beach right after the food or just enjoy your view while you have your amazing food. Must visit if you are visiting Santa Monica.

I went here on a weekday for breakfast. I had the eggs and potatoes with a scone. I had them add ham to my scrambled eggs. Everything was perfect! And the scone was warm and sweet ... didn't even need butter or jam. The coffee was a local roaster and was divine. I sat at a table outside and enjoyed the view of the beach. Some of the tables are on the sand and it was fun to watch children playing in the sand while dining with their parents.

Surprisingly excellent dinner here. So often restaurants in great locations (right on the beach) just coast on their location rather than put work into their menu. The views over the beach were worth the price of admission but the dinners we had were also quite excellent. My wife had a dinner salad and I had the grilled salmon. Both were top-notch. Excellent food. Excellent views.

Very nice relaxing atmosphere to sit on the beach enjoying wine with a tasty lunch or brunch. On weekends it gets extremely crowded with up to 1 hour or longer wait time so consider a short stroll on the beach. Although they often have a table faster than stated. Food is consistently good. Reasonable prices for being on the beach. Showers right next door if you want to wash off sand from your feet.

We were there early morning in February on a clear day. Great weather and vibe. Amazing omelettes served in quick time. The view of the beach is truly amazing. 🥂

The second I brought my girls young adults they liked the salmon burger I had the fish tacos loved them I recommend this Cafe next time we will try breakfast. It's the beach..whats not to love. It's upscale but casual. Lots of outdoor seating with umbrellas for shade... Even a separate kiosk at the north side rear of building for take out. Service is friendly...coffee refills without me asking. Extra napkins no prob. Only thing, your entire party must be present in order to be seated. And sometimes parking can be problematic...TIP: try other lots on either side of the cafe. Highly recommend!! P.s. I had the farmhouse omelette 5/5 and it was amazing, the scone that comes with, also amazing. 5/5

We came here for breakfast after arriving here in Los Angeles. I would recommend the California omelette, the vanilla and sourdough toast. I wouldn't recommend the back on the beach egg sandwich and my lady glass of water had lip stick on it

A cute cafe right on the Beach with a convenient parking lot. Try to arrive before 11 AM to get a parking spot and avoid the line. Reservation highly recommended if you have a big group. The parking rate is $3 an hour. The food was good - has both breakfast and lunch menu to choose from. I ordered the North African Shakshuka and it was flavorful. Service was attentive - the waiter came around several times to refill water and coffee. Note that the 18% tip is automatically charged on a big group.

Great experience for brunch on a Sunday. We arrived before 10am, and sat outside on the beach, feet in sand. Eggs were light and fluffy, with a cream cheese addition I had not experienced in a scramble. They were incredible. Flavor profile is one thing to master, but keeping an egg scramble light, fluffy and creamy in the same bite is an art. The side of potatoes were the perfect flavor and consistency. A healthy portion that didn't allow me to finish the serving. Plenty for two people. Cocktails were a 4 of 5, and my chicken chorizo was slightly dry, but the overall experience was so enjoyable, it merits a 5 across the board. Delightful! Can't wait to return.

We stopped in a for a quick snack during our visit along the beach. We ordered the sweet potato fries and lemonade. The fries were nicely done and the accompanying aeoli was good. The lemonade had a natural flavor and wasn't too sweet. Having a view of the beach was great plus. Overall, it was a nice experience.

If it weren't for the fact that this place is right on the beach I don't know if it would be as popular. The service is incredibly slow (though the servers are friendly and nice) and they get super overwhelmed easily. Food is decent. Best thing is really that it's right next to Annenberg community center and of course right on the beach.

This place is a perfect spot to unwind after a day at the beach. Dining outside means you can keep your toes in the sand - living up to their unique name! During the summer season, they're open until 8pm, making it a great location to enjoy a stunning sunset with a glass of Chardonnay and appetizers. Their crispy cauliflowers and Mezze plates are excellent choices if you're unsure what to order. For entrees, they don't try to be too fancy, but their Eggplant parmigiana is pretty decent. Don't worry about bringing the little ones either, as they offer a kid's menu and a playground right next to the restaurant to keep them entertained while they wait for their food.

A great place to eat right on the Santa Monica Beach. The menu ranges from breakfast to lunch to dinner. We happened to visit during Super Bowl weekend, but got in early (30-45 minute wait) at 1:00PM. Food was great, and they offer a kids menu and have a bar onsite. It’s very kid friendly as there is an adjacent playground to the restaurant. Onsite parking was an obstacle, as they share a common beach public parking lot. So trying to find a space is like a needle in a hay stack. Saw people getting out of cars holding spaces. Tip: We drove to the next public parking, found a spot within 5 minutes, and just walked over to the restaurant. No real waiting area outside. Did see a lot of people picking up to go riders and taking it right on the beach, great access if you’ll be there for a while and you get hungry. Don’t leave the waiting area, as they call names fast, and before you even get the text notification. Service was fast. We sat inside (it was this day), but they offer tables in the sand on the beach. Menu attached.

My friend and I came here on a whim and we both were pleasantly surprised by how tasty the food was. We sat inside for a bit then moved outside when the sky cleared up. I will certainly be returning here next time I'm in town.

This is a cute restaurant on the beach with either indoors or outdoors seating. On my visit, I sat outside where the tables were placed on the sand. It was nice to be able to dine at a restaurant setting and have your bare feet buried in the sand. The servers were very pleasant and attentive, food was okay. I ordered the Santa Fe salad with grilled salmon and a wine based margarita to wash it down. After lunch, I walked to Santa Monica pier to burn off what I just ate. All in all, it was a good experience.

We always chose to sit outside. It was full outside this Saturday but in less than 10 minutes, we got a take. Forgot to take a picture of the burgers. This picture was taken last month. Their burgers are excellent. We ordered an Impossible Burger with fruit as a side and a Salmon Burger with sweet potato fries as a side this Saturday. Very delicious 😋

The food is good not the best like authentic but is good enough to wait. I think is more about the setting that you enjoy while eating outside. I do recommend this place and also to reserve a day ahead unless you are eating inside. Parking is crazy, everyone is waiting for it. Parking is 6 for 2 hours or 12 all day.

Great family experience! The beach is just outside the door, or directly underfoot if you are seated outside. The views and opportunities to play are fantastic. Quality food and table service! It's best to get a reservation given how popular it is.

The restaurant is in a great spot on the beach with tons of stuff to do and see around it and the Santa Monica pier is very close by so it makes for a great day trip but the restaurant itself did not provide very great service and the wait times to be sat and to get our drink and food took a long time, the food not bad however I wish the timeliness was a bit better.

Simply amazing ocean front cafe beautiful vibes. We just had bagel...French toast...for kids....a little waiting..but great footfalls and excellent ambience...sunsets are a great plus point. A pool behind and facilities of annemberg community centre especially parking is amazing. Great outdoor seating adds life to the experience.

I ate at Back on the Beach …the food was okay, nothing to rave about but nothing to complain about either. The highlight was the service; our server was really kind and attentive. I did notice lipstick on my glass, which was a little off-putting, but she handled it quickly and brought back a clean one without any fuss. Not a bad experience at all, just decent. Probably a good spot if you’re looking for a casual bite by the beach.

This is a go to place for us when in town, this visit wasn't great. Service was inattentive and slow. My eggs in the cheese omelette were over cooked and tough. The burger was good, but for the price, maybe not worth it. The ambiance is perfect for beach dining

Didn't meet up to the hype when it comes to the taste of the food or the presentation, huge 2 hrs. Wait to get seated and parking is expensive all along the Santa Monica Beach. The food tasted normal, but I guess the hype is for the view of the beach and the seating arrangement in the sand otherwise I wouldn't go back there for the food again.

Got the black bean mushroom burger and a lemonade to go, to take to the pool nextdoor. Burger came out quick and was decent and filling... A little expensive but not crazy, and to be expected from a beachfront spot. I wouldn't come out of my way to come back here, but if I were by the pool and hungry I'd come back.

I truly hate to say this - but - BE CAREFUL eating there! We visited on August 7th... The service was not very good at all. The food, matched the service. I had fish and chips and was so excited to enjoy it. But it was cold and mostly batter with limp fries. The ambience was great, which is why my wife and I were so excited to finally go and have a sunset beach dinner there. On my way out, I went to the restroom. It smelled of a recent #2. Then a young man wearing an apron exited the stall and walked right out without washing his hands. What's worse - he went back into the KITCHEN! No way. That's why my advice is to be careful. Maybe just have a beverage and be safe. What a sad dissapointment!

The waitress asked me at least 5 times what I was ordering even though it was quiet and nobody was around. It was as if she couldn’t process the information at all. I ordered freshly squeezed orange juice from the menu just to get a cup of regular Tropicana or something. Nevertheless, I was charged for the freshly squeezed orange juice. When I asked if she could replace it with fresh juice, the waitress said they didn’t have it, then called a manager who told me they never make fresh juice, they get it delivered in the morning. So how is it fresh if they supposedly get it delivered? I remember getting freshly squeezed orange juice from them a couple weeks ago without any issue, they made it right in front of me. Now I had to pay $4.50 for some leftover packaged juice. The hotdog was a mere sausage on a bun, no toppings, not even mustard. I paid $16 for this total. What a joke.

We just came in after visiting the Getty Villa. I told our server that I had a seed allergy and he assured us that he’d let the kitchen know. We ordered clam chowder, sweet potato fries, and fish and chips. The clam chowder came with lavash crackers absolutely covered in sesame seeds. This was very disheartening because now I cannot trust that anything else is safe to eat. The chowder also was full of sand. Every bite was crunchy and I only had maybe 5 bites before it was just inedible. The fries were fine, their lemonade was good. Definitely not worth the cost.

We went there because some reviews claimed this place was dog friendly! As you arrive you quickly note the NO PETS signs, and they confirmed they do not allow dogs despite the large outdoor patio with tables nicely spaces apart. So for the record: NOT DOG FRIENDLY! Also make reservations, the lunch wait would have been 30 minutes.
