Restaurant Balmoral St. Charles Reviews
Went here for our 19th wedding anniversary for the first time. On our 40 minute drive over I asked my husband if he wanted me to read him the items on the menu! It took the whole ride! But mostly because after every item from the starter to dessert we kept gasping about how unique and tasty the menu was. We arrived to see the cutest brick building with wonderful warm and inviting exterior with great photo ops like an English red phone booth and gorgeous flowers. Our hostess was welcoming and gave us not the menu, but the drink menu. We didn’t see that online and were delighted with the choices. Scotches from ashtray to cask flavors and old and young. I wished my parents would have been able to try their scotch menu. We happily chose a specialty manhattan and a martini which were both perfectly made and arrived in sturdy crystal classes - very elegant. We excitedly spent two seconds holding the newly arrived menus only to tell Kylie our drive over helped us carefully decide on our selections. We ordered the haddock dip and of course - why not - the haggis appetizers. While we waited we received three breads which were all light and delicious. It was fun to use the beautiful English china. The Haddock dip was outstanding- so much so that the haddock entree could very well be our next entree next time. The haggis (made into a dip) was nothing like I thought it would be and I was very glad to see a unique take on it that was delicious with the toast points. Now the main course - Pheasant for my husband and the famed Beef Wellington for myself. Both were complete showstoppers! After many seasons of Hell’s Kitchen I know a Wellie is a difficult one. Gordon Ramsay would sell his firstborn for this. Perfectly tender and the mushroom, pastry and glaze were the best I ever had! So tender it melted in your mouth! The pheasant was also truly spectacular- so tender, juicy and uniquely seasoned. Both of us chose the herbed marbled potatoes as a side with carrots for him and brussel sprouts for me. All three came home after one bite each and were very good but we didn’t want to waste prescious space on sides. How on earthy did we manage the banana dessert? They had us at carmalized bananas!!! A lovely touch to include a scoop of grahams chocolate (a legend of a place in this area) on a lovely matching china heart plate with gold candles for our celebration! Kylie was the best server and really made our night special and sweet! The decor is cozy, elegant and warm. Highland murals and tartans abound. It felt like eating at your wealthy Scottish grandmother’s family table. Definitely a gem of a place and we look forward to many returns. Wished we found you much sooner!
My husband and I dined here for the first time last night and loved every bit of our Scottish dining experience! 🤩 I’m so glad I found this place. I literally tried to find a top restaurant that served Beef Wellington all day or at lunch and dinner and this place came up! I love dining experiences and this one tops the cake. The gentleman playing the bagpipes as we got of our car and walked in was just amazing! All of the descriptions they said about their dishes and drinks were truly ‘heavenly, ‘exceptional’ and ‘amazing’ to say the least. :) Now we need to book our trip to Scotland. Haha! Thanks for putting such great care into your restaurant. We loved it and were glad to have met Savannah our server. Thanks for all your hard work and great suggestions!
Amazing! Atmosphere, service and food. This is an excellent Scottish dining experience with authentic cuisine. Everything we had was perfect. You get your main dish and shareable dishes are placed on the table. Mashed potatoes, carrots, green beans and bread. We were greeted by a Scottish bags pipe.
We arrived about 10 minutes after opening, around noon on a Sunday. We had a long wait, as the roast chicken was taking time to cook. The waitress was wonderful. We had no problem with the wait time, we weren't in a rush but, it was over an hour. The roast dinner was worth every minute of the wait. Everything in it was delicious. A real taste of home for this Brit living in the US. It was worth the 2.5 hour drive to get there.
An amazing experience! I can't wait to go back, this tome taking my parents and having them enthusiastic magical place. Also, the Scotch flight was delicious!
Wanted to go to a fancy restaurant with a friend. This place exceeded all expectations. The menu was so unique. I told the server this but this restaurant is up to one of the best I have ever been to which includes my home state of St.Elmos. The price was worth it and the food was unbelievable with flavor. Will definitely go back again. Thank you for the amazing experience and food.
My husband and I went to Scotland on our honeymoon and looking for somewhere fun to celebrate our anniversary. We drove an hour to get here and I’m so glad we did! It was amazing! It reminded us so much of Scotland. The service, food, and ambience were spot on. We will make this a yearly tradition!
Unexpected and different! I am a fan of the old world decor and respectful salute to Scottish culture. Very cool! I have been to Scotland ages ago, so this was fun for me. I (of course) had the shepherds pie. Zero regrets. I enjoyed everything I ate. I will say, it is NOT a place you can dine in a rush. This place gives a disclaimer in their menu that all food takes a while to prepare, its all made fresh for you! I love this. I think in a group or visiting with loved ones this is perfect. You have time to enjoy some bread and a drink if you so choose and have a nice laugh around the table. I enjoyed the music in the background as well. (I did detect a Lord of the Rings song, we highly approved! Lol) Great place and truly unique! Definitely worth the adventure.
You have to go try it at least once! What a wonderful assortment of traditional Scottish foods! The service is amazing, you can BYOB (corking fee of course), and hopefully you end up going on one of the nights where the bagpiper is at the front door! We've been with a variety of family and friends and they've all enjoyed it thoroughly! So amazing to have a place like this locally.
Wow, this place is PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!!! I will most certainly bring my first born child here for their first meal. The kitchen knows what they are doing, everything was made to perfection. Wellington: YES….. Potatoes: YES….. Toffee Pudding: YES!!! Bar tender and staff were very professional, kind, attentive. Whether you are visiting from out of town, live in the area, or have to drive 500 miles to get here…… The Balmoral is a MUST TRY!!!!
Excellent all around. Steak was perfect. Fish and chips was superb. Homemade tartar sauce was delicious. Martini with stuff olives was next level and the Scotch Egg had me licking the plate. Great server and great atmosphere.
Very impressed! Everything was pretty good, and the manor house duck legs were exquisite. Service was excellent and we felt warmly welcomed by the owner. Beautiful and charming place. Expect to pay a few hundred for two with full course meal, drinks, and tip, but very well worth it IMO.
This has been on my list for quite some time. Originally, I wanted to do the tasting menu but it’s only limited to Mon-Thurs. I think it’s too busy on Fri-Sun and they don’t have enough staff if multiple people wanted the tasting menu. When you walk towards the restaurant, you are greeted with a bag piper. Shout out to Savanna P. She was our waitress. She was very kind and attentive. We ordered William Wallace’s deviled eggs 4 ways, Rosyth haggis drambuie, Young Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Beef Wellington, Manor house duck legs, creamy butter mashed potatoes, and ye auld sticky toffee pudding. Prices are very fair, Scottish food is not very common in Illinois. Portions are very sufficient, you’ll be full. Parking is easy. If you go on Fri-Sun, I recommend making a reservation. Just a note, the bread and butter was one of the highlights. If you know, you know, -deviled eggs 4 ways 5 - you have smoked salmon with egg roe, crispy bacon with red onion, spicy jalapeño, and traditional with mustard. They’re all pretty good if you like deviled eggs. My personal favorites are the traditional egg with mustard and the smoked salmon. -haggis drambuie 5 - first time trying haggis. Haggis is made from sheep’s pluck (heart, liver, lungs). It’s very savory and goes well with the crisp toast. I took the leftovers home and ate it with rice. -beef wellington 5 - it was prepared and cooked well. Great price for this. The pastry on the outer layer was flaky. Meat was a perfect medium rare. You don’t want to have it cooked longer otherwise it won’t be the same. -duck legs 5 - this was my personal favorite. I would rank above the wellington. Duck is super tender and juicy. That golden maple citrus glaze and the herbs made this dish very delectable. -butter mashed potatoes 5 - mashed potatoes were perfectly creamy and buttery. It has a nice texture. Honestly, I could eat a bowl of this alone. -sticky toffee pudding 5 - We thought it was going to be sweet but it wasn’t at all. Maybe just a hint but it’s a good dessert to finish the meal. The date cake is very moist. Definitely try to eat the date cake with the whisky custard and toffee sauce in every bite.
This place is amazing! My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary with family, everything was very well done. Our dinners were excellent! The soup is homemade and delicious and the sticky toffee pudding was amazing! From start to finish everything was wonderful! The bag piper was very, very cool! When dining here you feel as your in Scotland and not in Campton hills, Il
What a fantastic place! A blast of Scottish Highlands in the states. The menu is quite large with authentic Scottish & English dishes. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. Then we were entertained by a bloke playing the bagpipes! We ordered the pork chop with boiled potatoes & garlic strong beans and the Beef Wellington with mashed taters & carrots.
My friend and I decided to try this Scottish-themed restaurant, and it was a memorable experience. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with a touch of elegance that made us feel special. We started with the mushrooms in creamy garlic sauce, a recommendation from other patrons, and it did not disappoint—rich, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. For the main course, I had the pan-seared scallops, which were tender and succulent, complemented by a delightful sauce. My friend opted for the vegetable salad with chickpeas, which was fresh and vibrant, offering a nice balance to the richness of the scallops. The service was attentive and friendly, enhancing our overall dining experience. While the prices were on the higher side, the quality of the food and the atmosphere made it worthwhile. We left feeling satisfied and eager to return.
I recently went here because I've had a craving for haggis and saw they served it. Not quite the same as getting it in Scotland, but the flavors are similar and it was pretty tasty. It's missing the nips and tatties though. On the other hand, I tried the braised rabbit which was amazing. Definitely a good find for my area. The selection of Scotch was also great.
My boyfriend took me here for our 1 year anniversary, and it was incredibly lovely! The sound of bagpipes greeted us as we walked in the restaurant, which was a fun surprise. The decor and tableware were so beautiful, and the staff were very nice. We ordered the Scotch Egg appetizer, he ordered the Beef Wellington, and I ordered the Pork Chop with sweet potatoes and green beans. The pork chop was really the best I’ve ever had! It was so juicy and well seasoned. The sweet potatoes and green beans were amazing as well. Overall, it was such a delightful experience and I hope to come back soon!
Balmoral is always a great experience, from the bagpiper greeting to delicious dessert and coffee. Bartenders are professional and create excellent cocktails you can enjoy in the cozy bar until you are ready to move to your table. Appetizers - deviled egg platter, pork belly...so good. The Beef Wellington and other entrees we have tried are all delicious. Staff is professional and courteous.
Review for Balmoral Restaurant Located at 40W099 IL-64, St. Charles, IL 60175, Balmoral Restaurant provided an unforgettable dining experience for my girlfriend's birthday celebration. Making reservations was a breeze using Google through OpenTable, and I appreciated the ability to leave a note about the special occasion. Upon arrival, the host immediately acknowledged her birthday, setting a delightful tone for the evening. We were seated promptly and handed drink menus. Our server introduced himself, explaining that all food is freshly prepared to order, which added to our anticipation. The menu was impressively extensive, with an interesting history of Balmoral on the first page. We decided to try two appetizers: the haggis dip and the potato balls. The haggis dip, served with triangle toast squares, was unique and a must-try for any visitor. The potato balls, lightly fried and served with a cheese dip, were outstanding – the best I’ve ever had. Our entrees were equally impressive. My girlfriend chose the salmon, and I opted for the bangers and mash. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, and the quality of the home-cooked meals was evident. The food was a step above other restaurants we've visited. To top off the meal, the staff brought out a dessert with a candle for the birthday celebration, which was a lovely touch. The atmosphere at Balmoral is exceptional, evoking the feel of a cozy Scottish pub. The entire staff was friendly, polite, and a pleasure to interact with. For anyone planning a special occasion, we highly recommend Balmoral Restaurant. We discovered that they have bagpipers playing on Saturdays, and we are eager to return to experience that. Overall, we rate Balmoral a 12 out of 10 – they exceeded our expectations in every way.
Balmoral Restaurant is certainly one of St. Charles’s finest! The interior is beautifully decorated in traditional Scottish fashion and if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to watch a live bagpipe player during your meal. I savored every bite of my meal. The Glasgow Garlic Mushroom starter was particularly delightful. The duck breast was so flavorful and tender. This was my third time eating at Balmoral and I will continue to come back!
I've been living in the states for 19 years now, originally from Scotland, so I've had this place on my list for some time now......it was spectacular, I cannot find a single thing wrong with it. From the piper playing outside, the decor and atmosphere inside to the amazing food....flawless. Food cooked to perfection, drinks selection was outstanding and the service was perfect. An unexpected taste of home right here in the West Burbs. Highly recommended and will be back...... numerous times. Update 2/26/22 - 2nd time here and yet again flawless. Honestly, even if you take away the Scottish aspect, this is still one of the best dining experiences you can have. Knocks most of the top restaurants in downtown Chicago out of the water. Every single dish was executed to perfection. If you are looking for amazing food that is served in a great, welcoming atmosphere….this is THE place. This is a must try restaurant!
Balmoral High Tea with my best friend, celebrating my birthday, Scottish-style? Honestly, it doesn’t get much better than that. From the moment you step in, you’re wrapped in traditional Scottish charm, classic décor, old-fashioned and beautiful tea sets, and a sense that time has politely slowed down. Service is proper, attentive, and gracious in that old-school way that makes the whole experience feel special. The classic three-tier tea was exactly what you hope for: savory bites, warm treats, and sweet indulgences. But let’s talk about the scones, because they absolutely stole the show, crisp on the outside, buttery and melt-in-your-mouth tender inside. The kind of scone that makes you pause, smile, and quietly judge all other scones you’ve ever had. Add to that a great bar and well-crafted cocktails, and suddenly high tea feels both elegant and celebratory. In my book, this is hands down the best place for high tea in the western suburbs — perfect for birthdays, friendships, and moments worth savoring. ☕🎂✨
Terribly disappointed with Balmoral's tea service. Have had dinner here before and it was very good. So 5 of us went to Tea ceremony for the holidays. The tea was served luke warm and flavorless. We ordered earl gray, rasberry and mango. We asked for another pot made hotter and stronger. The next pot was hot but still lacked flavor. The food was nothing special at all. Scones were best part of the service. Our server was forgetful and slow coming to the table. This is an expensive tea service. 3 adults and 2 kids was over 300 bux. We did not have any additional drinks or food ordered. I have had much better tea luncheons for less money. Stick with their dinners but pass on the tea ceremony. Way overpriced for what you get!
