Cho Cho San Thousand Oaks Reviews
We went as a group of 6 for my birthday celebration. It was my first time to visit there. Nice Japanese warriors as decor. The chef definitely amazed me with his skills to slice and dice and to manipulate the fire. Food was very tasty! As a birthday special, two servers sang the birthday song to me in both English and Japanese, and I got two flavored ice cream which I had to share with my kids. The servers were very helpful in explaining the menu to us and recommending the food. The only drawback was that I didn’t know if we didn’t occupy the 8 seats, we could have two strangers share the table with us. I really didn’t mind it because in my culture, which is Chinese, we share food with anybody, strangers or not. But just saying it would have been good if I was aware of it so I didn’t feel maybe we were the intruders to the lovely couple. Overall, I am very satisfied with the restaurant. We went at night so that noise was just right to get us in the night show mood!
We had such a great time at Cho Cho San in Thousand Oaks for a family birthday! Since we’ve got a 9‑month‑old, we weren’t sure how it would go, but it worked out perfectly. The place is super kid‑friendly, with a relaxed family sit‑down vibe and a really fun staff. The food and drinks were excellent too. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a spot where you can be lively, enjoy yourself, and have a fun time together!
What a WONDERFUL experience today! Daughter Michelle was visiting from New Jersey with husband Barak and grandsons Gideon and Nadav - all celebrating our Sept, Nov and Dec birthdays! We lived in Thousand Oaks for 20 years and went to Cho Cho Sans for many birthday celebrations - so it was family tradition to go to this for the great food and the SHOW. Problem was we didn't know they stopped the lunch show and seeing how special this was for our family, the host Jeff made a SPECIAL text to Chef Tem if he could come in for US! And he DID!! Even though we were the ONLY customers in the habachi room, our server Lauren did a fantastic job and of course at the end they ALL sang Happy Birthday in English AND Japaneese!! We felt so special to have been able to continue our family celebration at our place even though our family is in New Jersey, Texas and NoCal, we aren't able to be together that often. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH, Jeff, Tem, Lauren and the wonderful staff, not to mention the DELICIOUS food that has NEVER lost one bite of flavor in all these many years!
Did the Teppenyaki for the first time!! It came with A LOT of food, so if you’re hungry, come with an appetite! This was the lobster tail meal for ~$42. It came with a salad, a mushroom & dried onion soup, your choice of rice (steamed or fried). I got steamed but the fried rice the chef makes for you! You also get mixed veggies, shrimp (dependent on the meal you get), and your entree. And there are 3 yummy dipping sauces to choose from - the red is like a sweet chili sauce, the white sauce is like a creamy mayo & the brown sauce is a peanut sauce. Overall, for the show we got, and all the food - SO WORTH the money!!! Word of advice though: PLACE A RESERVATION if you do Teppenyaki. They try to fill the tables so the chefs can get their worth of cooking. And try to be there within 15 minutes of your reservation time (if you have multiple people have them come on time too).
Great teppen menu. Prompt service and food was really cooked in front of your eyes. The place has no smaller tables,so if you don't go with a big group, you are seated with strangers. Makes it a bit uncomfortable.
I have been there twice now, and really liked (almost) everything. This is just a personal thing, but the fried rice was a little dry. My impression of Japanese rice is moist and sticky. Theirs not so much. I had the chicken and shrimp combo and it was prepared well and tasted very good. The presentation was very good too. So I would say overall the food and experience was very good and I would recommend it for anyone who wants the experience of Teppan style Japanese food. Considering that you get a show from the cook and the quality of the food I would say the price was what we expected. We went in the afternoon on a Sunday so it wasn't crowded but I expect in the evening on the weekend it gets pretty busy so you might want to make a reservation.
Cho Cho San is a long time staple of the area. It’s a classic. I would certainly recommend its happy hour for inexpensive, sushi and drinks. We usually do this place for birthdays and other celebrations. It’s fun and the food is good! If you are looking for clean new bright and cheeri you will be disappointed. But if you’re looking for a solid place that has been around since the beginning of time and does classic cook in front of you Teppanyaki and pretty good sushi with inexpensive drinks, then this is the place for you.
It’s flying grease everywhere and very smoky. Not for the faint of heart but a blast nonetheless for the show and excitement. Hopefully you’re sitting on the right side of the grill but expect Korean BBQ style vibes with more of a racket atmosphere. Good pricing for the bang for the buck for sure!
Our kid loves to watch the guys cooking, the fire and all that. Everyone (of all ages) in our group enjoyed the food. The drinks were ok. The chateaubriand is exquisite. We will definitely be back.
Oldie but a goodie. Happy hour menu is awesome. Is it the best sushi joint? No. Is it reliable? Yeah. I recommend a spicy scallop and shrimp hand rolls and the Tuna on crispy rice. My sister enjoyed her vegetarian go toss tempura veggie roll and cucumber rolls. Garlic edamame is the best here.
Went here during the day for lunch to celebrate. My Family and I were the only ones in there. The service was not the best. The server made is feel like we shouldn't be there. This was our first time here, and the server was not helpful at all navigating the menu. The Tapanyaki style food was great. The gentlemen that was cooking made good food and a decent little show. But the server just killed the vide, just after getting our food the server asked if we wanted to go boxes. Can we enjoy the food before you want us to pack up pay and leave as soon as possible? We will not be returning just because of the server. The cups need to be replaced. For what patrons are going to pay, dishware should be up to par.
I have been to this place four times in the last year. When you sit down and they cook in front of you, the food is usually great. This time I was there July 5th with my mother. We sat down at a regular table and ordered from the menu. She ordered a three item combo but only got one of the items. I ordered filet and chicken and got reheated food. The filet was okay, but the chicken was very dry like it had. Just been reheated and not cooked recently. I mentioned it to the waiter and told him it was fine. I'll deal with it and continued my meal. Before he brought the bill over is when I found out my mom didn't get what she ordered, she didn't tell me till the end of the meal which is our bad. I told the waiter about it before he brought over the check that she only received one of the items. And we'd like to check so we can leave. I thought common sense would be that he would adjust the price of the meal to reflect what we actually received. I guess my comment sense isn't so common. I'm going to include pictures of how much food I left behind. I can normally clean my plate. But it was so bad I just left it there for the trash. The fried rice was good after I added the yummy sauce to it. The manager did offer to fix the price but I explained to her I did not want a discount. If I complain about something I want to pay for it. If they give it to me free or at a discount I feel that I lose my right to say how the meal was. I even left over 20% tip. I don't think it was a waiter's fault. But he could have gotten the manager what he said he would.
This place must have been sold to someone else. Not the same Cho Cho San at all. The front of house staff acted like they were hired days before with no experience. The sushi chefs were not Japanese or Korean or anything Asian at all and it showed. It's as if the old owners just sold the whole kit and caboodle and escaped to a better state.
