Lost Maples Cafe Utopia Reviews
We stop here for breakfast once year after camping in the hill country. Very quaint and local. Love the small town atmosphere. Dont expect fast food. Pancakes are HUGE. Coffee is average. Wait staff is no nonsense and efficient. Hash browns are the pre-formed kind, which I dont prefer. Ask for the potatoes instead. I will continue returning when in the area.
I stopped by this morning for a simple two egg breakfast. It was pretty darn good, the bacon and eggs were done perfectly, the service was friendly. Breakfast in a cafe like the Lost Maples just can't be beat. I hope I make it back soon.
Very reasonable prices and excellent food. The lamb sliders were incredible.
We drove a little over an hour from home enjoy dinner with the family (4 of us) who couldn't believe we were going that far. It was worth it! We got Ribeye Steak (good size) cooked medium rare, baked potato loaded, veggies and chocolate pecan pie, peach pie and apple pie for our desserts. Food was delicious, service was attentive, and prices were fair and reasonable. I've been here before, about 10 yrs ago and it was as good as I remember. We're going to come back for breakfast!
Wonderful small town cafe! We enjoyed their scratch made chicken fried steak, prepared from beef locally sourced and their onion rings were delicious, as well. We then had to take home an amazing piece of home made coconut cream and fudge pecan pie!
Such a cute and cheery cafe. We camp allllll over, and I have a separate bookmark list for roadtrip pie spots to try. Because pie is 100% the BEST dessert.) Stopped in to grab a few slices of pie Togo during our campsgiving weekend at nearby Lost Maples. Staff (I think they are family?) were all super DUPER kind and greeted us with smiles. We’ll come back and try breakfast next time we visit Garner SP. (And more pie of course!)
Every dish that our party of 5 had was made fresh and NOTHING was frozen from a vendor. The jalapeno poppers were homemade and amazing. The chicken strips were hand battered and the gravy was creamy. The deluxe meal was great and they make homemade salsa. Lastly, we had one of each pie and they were all good. People complaining of service need to slow down and enjoy this place for what it is, a gem in the middle of a literal utopia of parks and rolling hills and take time to relax. We will be coming back again soon just for pie.
Largest pancake I ever saw...delivered with verbal instructions for adding syrup! 2 eggs over medium, sausage, black coffee...good breakfast starter. Hill country decor at its finest. Recommend when you are visiting the TreeHouses on the Sabinal River...just a few miles away. Be sure to arrive early if you want a noon meal. Country-friendly staff...no need to rush...just enjoy the ambience of Utopia Tx.
Stopped in on the way home from Lost Maples. My daughter and I both got patty melts and pie. That burger really hit the spot! The pie was super yummy too! We got a slice of lemon meringue and cherry. The crust was perfect. I don't know who makes their pies, but I would be happy to give them a big fat hug! As far as staff goes, the girls working that day were really sweet. The service was great. It was a slow Sunday after the lunch rush, but I have a feeling they handle it just fine. I hope to visit up that way again, and when we do, we'll be making a pit stop here!
Great little cafe with good food and amazing people. Their super friendly staff was very quick to offer suggestions and even give us a taste to help us decide. Food was typical cafe type food, but very good; the sweet potato fries were delicious, the fried okra was exactly what was expected, the burger was huge, as were the salads. The pies were amazing! Do not miss! It's a quaint, cute, very country atmosphere. If you're in the area, you should check it out!
Visited this lovely place after camping in Garner over the weekend. The food was incredible, like home cooking by a master. Everything was sourced locally and made fresh. Even the salad dressings were made from scratch (we had ranch and thousand island). The staff was so nice and accommodating, the food came out fast, and the prices were fair. If you are anywhere near them, you should try them out. Ps get some pie!
Wife got the burger. I got the nachos. Food was really good. Loved that the nachos had freshly cooked chips. Staff was very friendly. Service could have been a little better but I’ll admit they got pretty busy pretty quickly. Based on our one visit, I would say get there before 12 because it took off around then. Also, the pie was fantastic!!
My friends and I along with my girlfriend tried this place out while we were staying in Utopia and the food is good but the hospitality the servers had was even better! Prices were fair and the apple pie is a MUST try. Absolutely delicious considering it's homemade. Will definitely be back when we visit Utopia again!
Late review. We have visited Lost Maples Cafe for both Eclipses (Oct 2023 & April 2024). On both occasions the food was great and the staff were always friendly and attentive. The patty melt is always a win, as well as the cheese enchiladas. On our second visit, my mother had the lamb sliders, which were tender and flavorful. The buttermilk, lemon meringue, and fudge pecan pies are fabulous. We will continue making our way through the pie selections on our next visit.
We came here after hiking in Lost Maples. Didn’t know anything about the place but saw they had a 4.5 star rating here, so we whipped in. I’m so glad we did. We had the lamb sliders, sweet potato fries, and onion rings, then had fudge pecan pie and ice cream for dessert. Everything was fantastic. We will definitely come here again next time we come back through!
I would like to give a huge thank you to the team/family at Lost Maples. I have been dining there for years and I always have a great experience. However, recently we had a guest stay at our home and they had a daughter with sever dietary restrictions. The owner's grandson noticed that she was eating her own prepared food and inquired as to why. They advised him of her dietary issues. He said he shared her condition and would like to personally supervise a meal preparation for her. Thanks to his kindness and consideration, she was able to eat her first meal prepared in a restaurant in her entire life at 9 years of age. As you can imagine this was a wonderful moment for the entire family. So I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Lost Maples staff and family for making this special moment a reality.
Pleasant surprise to find this gem on a Tuesday evening. Food was amazing. Try the lamb sliders, great homemade ranch, perfect sweet potato fries! Atmosphere is fun! Prices are good!
Country Cafe with some of the best pie on this planet. My favorite is the Buttermilk Pie but they are all awesome & delicious! The folks there are nice as they come and will ensure you enjoy your stop. If you near Utopia, Texas you have got to stop in first a visit.
A menu with good variety where everyone should be able to find something they'd enjoy. Comfort food and Mexican. Come for the good food and stay for a choice out of the pie case. Or at least take a slice of pie with you. The cook was nobody's grandma but his food tasted like it was from her kitchen. Glad they stayed open during the off season. Worth the drive from the near by state park.
Everything was fresh, especially the lamb chops. Flavor was very southern in the best way possible and portion/price ratio is amazing.
Lost Maples Cafe is a must when headed to or from Lost Maples or Garner State Parks or whenever you choose to visit the small town of Utopia. There’s a movie based on the town but I’ve never seen it. Anyway, back to the Cafe- I was ready for some great home cookin and wasn’t disappointed at all! There was a smaller menu for the 4th of July but that was just perfect getting the fried chicken. It was moist and crispy. And the homemade potato salad was incredible! I can’t forget about the homemade pies either. I was led to the buttermilk and it was rich and creamy. The staff was great too! I’m now trying to find a reason to head to Utopia so I can stop in for more great food!!!
Good food. Quaint place. Great service. Friendly staff!
Nice cafe in small town Utopia. Food had great portions and flavor. It was prepared quickly, hot and fresh.
Stopped in and had the steak and fries—didn’t really care for the fries, but the steak was amazingly delicious. Honestly surprised at how good it was for $27. Perfectly cooked, full of flavor, and absolutely worth it. You really can’t beat it. Highly recommend stopping here if you’re in the area. Definitely Texas road trip travel approved!
My wife and I went to Lost Maples and hiked around for a couple of hours and came back here for lunch. It was busy but we had absolutely fantastic service, the waitress was so accommodating and made great recommendations and the gentleman who oversaw the entire establishment was super friendly and I enjoyed speaking with him on several occasions (Go Longhorns!) Next time we go hiking at Lost Maples, we're coming back here again for lunch..!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Excellent cafe. Great food and service. Ribeye steak … excellent. Fried okra. Excellent. Coconut cream pie… the best I’ve had. The pie is now my new yardstick to measure all pies by. We met the baker and she is awesome. The chef came out to say hi as well. Yup. It’s that good. Highly recommend.
What a little hidden gem. Great food, great service, and hell great community. Friendly everywhere. We will return when we’re in that area! We ordered the shrimp special expecting like frozen shrimp. Boy were we wrong! They were HUGE gulf shrimp! Perfectly breaded. Very impressed. Our waiter was an extremely nice kid. Thank you Lost Maples cafe!
Small, cozy spot. I really wanted the lamb sliders but they were out so I ended up with a cheeseburger which was so good. The chicken fried steak was perfectly cooked/fried and the gravy was delicious. Not to mention the pies are to die for. Can't wait to come by again when we're in town. Highly recommend!
We are here twice in 4 days time on a recent trip to the state park. Both times, we had the daily special and they were delicious. One day was pork chops and the other was Chicken fried hamburger steak. Just great, comforting home cooking. We left there with our bellies full and extremely satisfied. We will definitely be back in the future. Highly recommend.
Review: Lost Maples Café – Utopia, Texas By Hazel Velasquez Tucked away in the quiet charm of Utopia, Texas, Lost Maples Café offers more than just a meal — it offers a feeling. From the moment I stepped in, I was struck by the unpretentious warmth of the space. The atmosphere is unmistakably homey, with a lived-in authenticity that can’t be faked. The menu leans into classic country comfort, but what sets this spot apart is execution. The homemade biscuits were, without exaggeration, phenomenal — golden, flaky, and served with the kind of pride that only comes from baking them from scratch that very morning. As someone who often finds myself repeating the phrase “extra veggies, please” only to be met with a sprinkle of green, I was genuinely impressed. I requested a fully loaded veggie omelet — and for once, didn’t have to beg, repeat, or clarify. It arrived overflowing with fresh, vibrant produce, balanced and flavorful in every bite. That level of attentiveness is rare. Lost Maples Café doesn’t try to be trendy or reinvent the wheel. What it does, it does exceptionally well. It’s a humble reminder that great food, served with care, still matters — and in this little corner of Texas, it shines.
The atmosphere is nice and interesting. We found a seat and were attended to pretty quickly. The food was good and did not disappoint! The bacon was nice and crispy and the onion rings alone would give me a reason to come back. The chicken fried steak was a little tough but the flavor was amazing! These people have their breading down! From fresh baked potatoes to homemade tasting ranch with lettuce and spinach that looks freshly picked and crunchy! Definitely putting this on my places to stop when I'm in the area!
Cute cafe. Enjoyed a nice breakfast on way home from camping trip. Pancakes were HUGE, eggs ham bacon yummy. The omelette & sausage biscuits also very delicious. Everyone was stuffed. Prices reasonable and service was fast. Highly recommended. We parked our truck/travel trailer across street so very convenient.
Nice cosy restaurant with home comfort food. Walked in and found the place clean and had an very comfortable old style. Waitress was nice, friendly, and helped me with my order. I got the lamb sliders with sweet potato fries and an ice tea. The sliders were cooked perfectly and man were they tasty. Sweet potato fries were also good. For dessert I got apple pie made from scratch and it was done right. Very much enjoyed the wood interior, service, and especially the food! Highly recommended!
Atmosphere was very good. Service was great! Our waiter was very attentive and nice. Food came out quickly and hot but was kinda bland. Would definitely recommend stopping in!
Good food and open late so you can still eat out after a long day of hiking at Lost Maples state natural area. The cafe is actually in Utopia, about 20 minutes south of the park. As you can see, I ate all of my salad before my main meal came out (it was quick; I was just hungry). The chocolate meringue pie was superb.
This is a pretty good old fashioned diner. The interior is rustic and there is plenty of seating for all party sizes. The place is somewhat clean and the service is really good. The food is tasty and the price is great. Great value on food at this place. It’s practically the only restaurant in the middle of town, so the foot traffic going here is steady.
All in all, a fantastic place. Worth the trip. Great value, warm inviting interior. Fantastic service. Fun merch up front. Good space for couples or larger groups. Kid friendly. Great value for food. Only ding is a slight quality issue. Burger was just ok and catfish also was ok, not great. (For the latter, go to Lakehouse in Kerrville or Backyard BarBQ in Sisterdale/Boerne. Since food is why we go to a restaurant, I took off a star. But worth the trip and totally worth the money.
The food and service were both excellent, so I have nothing to complain about. It’s a great place to have lunch when you’re visiting Lost Maples.
Good food. Large sized OJ +1. Def try the pancake, really good and *yuge*. Service was a bit slow. At least it took longer than expected to get our breakfast. While they were doing a business, it wasn't so packed we had to wait; we were seated right away. Noticed another table who came in after us got served before us. I asked for hot sauce and was brought salsa; we already had salsa in the table. I just grabbed a bottle from another table. They also had a biker gang show up, and we heard them tell existing patrons to move. Interesting move lol; happily we were not impacted by this. Oh yes, the booth table was small, and it was a tight fit for me to get in and out of (I'm 6'4"). Anyway, we enjoyed breakfast. I'd been once before, and I would happily stop by again. The negatives are more informational and by no means a deal-breaker.
Was there with Wife on a rainy October afternoon. We Ordered the Apple and Cherry pies. Both were fantastic - had the homely touch. Nice way to enjoy a rainy day. Highly recommended to drop in for a meal or pie. Only downer was that the medium sized tees had ran out, had to settle for a larger size. Bummer. Lol.
This is a great option for breakfast while visiting in the area. And the locals frequent it. Moderate-sized menu options include breakfast tacos and locally-made sausage. Everyone is friendly here. They were able to seat 10 of us together with no problem. We all enjoyed our meals. Prices are reasonable. Service was very hospitable. There were many people in the kitchen. Everything came out quickly. No frills but no complaints!
Good spot for area. The food is average for a small town. My salad was odd, besides the spring mix & chicken, there were chopped yellow squash & hard carrot chunks. Never have seen that before. But the chicken was great. The sweet potato fries were the best thing we ordered. Pies are delicious but also average. A nice place to stop at if in the area. Wouldn't make a special trip.
Visited for breakfast Sunday 11/6/22 after seeing how busy the place was during a town festival on Saturday 11/5/22. A real hill country gem, the café was very cute and staff was friendly. Don’t go if you’re in a hurry. We weren’t and enjoyed the decor and atmosphere. Giving 4 stars only because we waited almost an hour for our food. We arrived at 9:30 and by 10:15 they were out of biscuits and running low on bacon. Luckily I got the last delicious biscuit of the day. They were also transitioning to the Sunday lunch items by 10:30 so go early if you want breakfast. Regret that we didn’t get to try the Lunch special or pies- they looked incredible. (Whole pies are about $26). Parking was on both sides of the corner lot, handicapped accessible on the side street. Definitely a great place to visit. You’ll leave full and happy. Highly recommend!
I don't know where to start... I guess first off, some of the pictures are halfway way through our meal. The food was so good!! 😋😋 It was hot, fresh, and delicious. Saturday evening: Mom had the chicken fried steak and a baked potato. I had a taste of her chicken friend steak. I have to say that was absolutely the BEST chicken fried steak I have ever tasted. Hubby and I both had burgers. The patties are from beef raised on the owners ranch. Hubby had the patty melt with onion rings. I had the bacon cheeseburger and sweet potato fries. The burgers were seasoned well and had a wonderful flavor. They were juice and cooked to perfection. The onion rings hubby had were from made scratch - hand cut, and batter lightly. They were bursting with flavor and deep friend to a perfect golden brown. I had sweet potato fries, and wow, these are the most tasty sweet potato fries I have had. They were hand-cut - not too thick or thin, just right. Now, on the decedent pies and oh my, they did not disappoint. Mom had a peach pie she said it was very good (I didn't taste it, so I cannot elaborateon it.) Hubby had the fudge pecan pie, and oooohh it was amazing (I did have a bite a this one, it's chocolate 🤪) The crust was delicate, but not falling apart. The filling was moist and was not overly sweet but sweet enough. I had the lemon meringue pie (my favorite), and it was the best damn pie I have ever had. 😋 The crust was like hubbies, and the filling had the ideal amount of tart and sweet. It was refreshingly delicious. All I can say is you have to try it!!! Monday breakfast: Hubby had the western omelet, with tator tots, and a biscut with gravy. He said his omelet was pretty good. The tator tots were good and crispy. I had the two eggs, ham, cubed potatoes, and a biscuit with sausage gravy. My eggs were cooked just like I like them 😋. The potatoes were fresh and crisp. The ham was very good. The biscut with the sausage gravy was just like my step-mom used to make - soooo good!! The restaurant was clean and has plenty of seating. There is street parking. The only reason this establishment got 4 stars is because of the service. Saturday, the service was horrible. We could get the waitresses' attention to get refills, a box, or the check. She didn't check on us once. I have to say Monday the service was better. I assume it was better because the owner was there. I would definitely go back because the food was outstanding 👌 I highly recommend this place if you can stand the subpar service.
We stopped in while staying near Utopia and it’s about the only option in town. A local staple and real great, friendly servers. Our foods were good and would return on my next visit.
Read menu carefully. Mexican food was good and the 3R ribeye was great. Homemade pies are always available.
I ordered chicken fried steak and my wife got the lamb sliders. The chicken fried steak was good and the lamb sliders where really good. She got a buttermilk cream pie, it was really good as well. I would absolutely go back again. Is it the best place, no. But it is a good place to eat.
We drove through Utopia and decided to stop for dinner. The atmosphere when we walked in gave the feeling of “Oh, I might get hate-crimed”. There were only white people, and I was the only Hispanic, so I felt off. There were also mammy dolls (racist dolls) in the windows of one of the booths, which made me uncomfortable. Our waiter was great though! He was very kind. We got our drinks and appetizers very quickly. The sweet tea was really good, it had that homemade taste. The fried pickles were VERY fresh, they literally steamed after we took a bite. They were very good! I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, and my husband ordered a cheeseburger. I am someone who gets very scared of ordering chicken from restaurants as I am scared of it being undercooked. However, this was cooked perfectly! It was white all the way through, and it tasted very good. My husbands burger was cooked perfectly too, and he tore that thing up! Overall, our experience was very good. I would just recommend removing the dolls as they are very offensive and racist.
Food was OK service was lacking. Took the family after a day of hiking at Lost Maples. After We ordered our waitress gave us a lecture on the proper way to order a cheeseburger. Some of us ordered a hamburger with cheese instead of a "cheeseburger". Not sure why she felt the need to say anything. I don't need some kid talking to my family like we are schoolchildren and don't know how to order food. This was off putting. Interestingly enough, the menu does not have a "cheeseburger" on it. They have a hamburger and any additions you want, like cheese or bacon ect.... So they ordered exactly how the menu was written. She would have been better off just putting the order in, and not saying anything. It came across as condescending. That is how it started and it went downhill after. Food came quickly at least some of it. We had 7 orders, 2 were wrong (1 missing an item and one incorrect )and a third order just never showed up. Our waitress did not notice that not everyone had food. I let here know and by the time it finally arrived everyone else was done. As, far as taste, the burgers, rings, patty melt and chicken fried steaks were good. Fries were barely warm. The hamburger steak was over salted, overcooked and dry. The club sandwich was average at best. As a side note it was not busy so the servers and kitchen should not have had these types of issues. They did comp a couple of pieces of pie to try and smooth things over, but overall I was not impressed.
If you keep your expectations at a minimum and you're hungry after a very long hike at Lost Maples State Park, then you'll be satisfied with the calories that this spot offers. The service folks are top notch and the place is very cute. Had the chicken fried steak, blt, onion rings, and salad. The onion rings were incredibly tasty.
The food was okay, nothing special. The Chicken Fried steak was $16 Something and small compared to most other places and just not that great. I ended up paying $20 something just for a small fried steak, baked potato 🥔 and drink.
Super cute atmosphere! Great customer service. We ate outside because we had our dogs, which was not an issue there. Wish the waitress had wiped down the table once we sat there, but in here defense, I don't think it's used often and may have thrown her off. We ordered Mexican food because our 1st choice was Ribeye steaks, but the grill was broken, so that was a no-go. We would go back but would definitely NOT order the enchilada plate again.
Stopped in for a late breakfast after a 3 day backpacking trip at Lost Maples SNA. Food was delicious. None of three wait staff made any effort to ask how our food was, no offer to refill drinks and had to figure out on your own you paid at the register not the table. We were there about 10:30AM before the lunch hour. Only ones there. Would have enjoyed a slice a pie but the body language of the wait staff made it clear we were not welcome. Going to have to find somewhere else to go when we visit the area. Open to suggestions.
The place is basic at best. There was no one wearing a mask. Not the waitress, not the cooks. I saw some lady in the back eat something, and I'm almost sure they had no gloves. The food was bland. They only know about the toast you see in the pics. If u like bread... then go ahead. It's a cute place, but not worth the time. Might as go to a dairy queen.
I can't really rate the food because we never even received any food. We were greeted with someone at the cashier saying "I'm so over this" instructed to pop a squat verbatim and that someone would be with us. After 15 minutes of no one, even looking at us or speaking to us, we got up to leave when a nice young lady offered to give us a piece of pie. I'm not sure why she thought that would be appropriate how about just ask us if we needed a menu. My husband and I took the time to ride from Bandera to Utopia on our motorcycles For our anniversary just to eat at this place. I would not recommend any of my friends or family to visit your establishment
Ordered fried fish and chicken strip baskets. The two pieces of fish were one solid piece. When cut apart it was pink inside. Sent it back. The pieces were refried instead of starting with fresh pieces. Crust was almost burned. I should have sent it back and asked for something else. The chicken strips were OK. Sweet potato fries were good until reserved with the refried fish on top which made them soggy. Onion rings were good. We wish we had ordered something more conventional but the server assured us that everything was wonderful. She never followed up or apologized for serving fish that was undercooked. Disappointing experience.
Eggs small as quail, pan sausage had odd taste. ( I have never left pan sausage on my plate my whole life, until now) Hash browns straight from Walmart. At least mash it up. Great service, jail house food.
Felt super rushed by the waitress as if she had better things to do than take my order. So I just ordered a BLT. Terrible. 2 slices of bacon and so much mayo it made the sandwich wet. Plus I paid $17 for it. I’m visiting Utopia on a business trip and will not ever go back here!
We were 6 ladies and a young man. We went to this highly recommended cafe for breakfast. We were seated on two different tables because one big table was not available. We sat and ordered the food. Then we waited and waited and waited, but the food did not arrive. We noticed that everyone sitting around us had finished eating and replaced by other guests and even they were served but we did not receive our food. We had big plans for the day and we had already wasted two hours waiting for breakfast. Then we decided to leave and thought about asking for food one last time. When they saw us leaving, they finally served the food. The omelette was nasty, watery. Upon inquiry they said they use canned veggies in the omelette that’s why it’s watery. Really? Canned onion tomatoes in the omelette??? At the time of payment when we asked about the delay, the last said e we don’t know who orders first, we just cook and serve everyone. I suggested that they should number the ticket so this does not happen and she replied , “I’m doing this for 40 years and I could not figure this out.” And laughed. At the end we realized that we all were immigrants and only non-white people in the restaurant that’s why they did not want to serve us. They were busy serving white people. We are brown. So if you are not white don’t bother going to this cafe.
Staff were really weird with customers. Also, they (2 of the staff) were in and out of the front door frequently during our visit. It was very strange. After we got our food, we were not waited on at all. Had to figure out we pay at the front after waiting a while for our check. Food was okay, nothing to rave about. I went back to the bathroom and I see the cook sitting next to the grill watching a movie on her phone. I thought that was kind of unsanitary. And in the end we got a frozen peice of pecan pie. Would not recommend this place.
First of all this was the 1st time visiting this place. We did get served drinks and were able to order our food. However, after waiting for our food for 45mins without being served, I decided to pay for our drinks and leave. We decided to leave after seeing church folks arriving after us and being served first. Not gonna add more thoughts but I do question if racism had anything to do with it or they really just dropped the ball with our order. I guess we'll find out with other reviews in the future.
Never again 🫤 took they server 7.2 minutes to bring us our drinks (water and sprite) No Smile when speaking to us. Food sat under warmer for 8 minutes. Husband saw that she looked at the food and walked into the other dining room. Beans were cold. I've been a server for 38 yrs. Never have I seen such poor service. Wasted $38 for cold food.
