Deliciosos Tamales Vélez Reviews
Delicious! I haven’t had such tasty tamales since I lived near Mexico. They are pretty cheap for how big they are. We had the mole, birria, frijol, and Oaxaca pork. My favorites were the mole Oaxaca style. The masa is really well-made, extremely drool-worthy. We got guacamole as well and it was scooped up fast! That said, the frijol one was a little bland and had cheese in the middle, so if you don’t really do dairy like me, watch out. The Oaxacan style are similar to Colombian tamales from the valley and are pretty big, we ended up taking one home for breakfast. If you haven’t heard of Evelia’s story, look her up! And come back for breakfast, they now have conchas (sweet bread) and drinkable arroz con leche.
I ordered the tamales and caldo de res and everything tasted great, really flavorful and satisfying. The restaurant was pretty busy when I arrived, but I didn’t have to wait long, which was a nice surprise. The only downside is that they charge separately for the salsa, which I didn’t love, but I guess that’s inflation these days. Overall, I’d definitely come back for the food.
I do love tamales at this time of year and this place definitely serves up some tasty ones. Not quite the same as those I get when I travel home to south Texas but still very very delicious with some wonderful variations I’ve not had and at a very affordable price. I ordered five which turned out to be the perfect number for me. All great but I’d say my favorite was the rojo with pork. So much flavor and the ratio of meat to masa much better than other places I’ve had up here. Such a great lunch and while a bit of a trek from Manhattan, definitely worth it!
Owner used to have a popular food truck and was able to turn that success into a small but popular restaurant. Tamales are delicious and so are the atoles. Today I had a tamal de mole, puerco (Oaxaca style) and a tamal de rajas con queso. They were all delicious! We have tried the chilaquiles previously- they were ok. But today we had the huevos con chorizo and we were not disappointed. Everything is freshly made and flavorful and the prices are good. Excellent salsas as well. You will not be disappointed if you eat here. They also have a lot of options. I didn’t post the full menu.
Saw this place on TikTok and how much the owner suffered throughout the years because of the NYPD and just had to try it when I was in town!!!! Some of the best and juiciest tamales I've ever had!!!! Wish they had the pricing on the menu, though, cause once I asked the lady working the front how much they were, she seemed super annoyed, rolled her eyes, and told me???? I don't understand why she got so mad. 🫤 The food was good and the atmosphere was nice, a quiet little place in a busy intersection. I'll come back next time I'm in town!
The tamales were okay, but nothing out of this world. I’ve definitely had better from street vendors. I got a oxacacenio with chicharon and it didn’t have a piece of chicharon in it. Very disappointed. Plus that one was very bland and soggy. The regular ones were better in consistency and flavor and actually had some meat in them. Overall not a bad place to try, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get it.
I will say that the tamales were a perfect 9/10 because they were full of flavor but were a bit mushy. Next up was the chilaquiles they were hard crispy tortilla chips there was also barely any sour cream and cheese on top. That was one of the things that caught my eye at first glance. I would give this a 5/10. Lastly we got the quesadilla de Tinga. The flavor was spot on but upon opening it up we noticed that there was no lettuce. Usually in other places where quesadillas are sold they come with lettuce. But I will say that coming here in Mother’s Day their service is really well. They pay attention to everyone. So kind.
I’ve only came here to try tamales and what I can say is that the mole and adobo tamales are really good. They came out hot and they had lots of moisture. The flavor is there ! Would come here again just for the tamales. We came here for Mother’s Day and my mother loved the tamales as well
Excellent selection of very well made tamales, but when we arrived for lunch they were warm (not hot) and their selection was low. They were out of at least three types from their menu. Between two of us, we ordered six tamales, beans and rice, and when we finished we still hungry. Decided to go with some tacos which were also excellent, and served very hot. Would definitely try it again.
Don’t order the torta, they’re smaller than they seem and the milanesa is dry and tastes about 2 days. The tamales de mole almost had no flavor and not much chicken in them.
DISAPPOINTED, VERY SMALL, THIN TAMALES NOT EVEN ENOUGH CHEESE INSIDE!! EXTREMELY SMALL PORTION FOR THE PRICE YOU PAY!!! NOT WORTH IT. I HAVE PAYED LESS FOR A DECENT SIZE!!! SHOULD BE CHEAPER FOR WHAT YOU GETTING!! The street tamales are bigger and cheaper!!! 🤯 NOT WORTH IT I AM STILL HUNGRY!!
Been coming here a few times and today they had no line somehow my drink was not covered well and everything spilled in the bag with the food I understand when it’s busy but when it’s no line how do you not cover the lid correctly, unfortunately not coming back here again
