Black Bear Diner Waco Reviews
Ermagurd! I dont know how this little gem has stayed hidden. Quite and yummy. Super affordable, the taco salad in this Pic was like 12 bucks and massive, wife couldn't eat half. Its definitely enough for 2 people. With all the chip and Jo tourists traps in waco this is a pleasant experience. My chicken fried steak was better then the new heitmillers though nothing will ever compare to the original. Steak was edge to edge, no big pocket of air in excessive crust. They offer waffles and sweet cream pancake among many other yummy items. And personal 6inch pies, at 7.00ea what a steal. If you are craving that really good strong diner coffee, they got it, and they offered one to go as well. We love this place. I coin this place the love child of cracker barrel and a wafflehouse...
Everything about this place is wonderful. The dining room is decked out with wood carvings of bears and fun and interesting folk at on the walls. The food is exceptional and the serving sizes are large. If you like biscuits this is the place for you, but be aware that they are massive(about the size of a large man's fist). I absolutely love this place for a pleasant meal with terrific service at a great price for the quality and quantity of the food that you get. I have eaten at multiple locations and I have never had a bad meal or dining experience.
Cody was a great server! Under immense pressure on a Sunday rush he was able to show kindness and continue to check in on us. A great employee always knows when to ask for help and I overheard him ask another server to help with take one of his tables order- politely- and she responded no pretty harshly before she walked off. As someone who works in food service as well I understand how fast a great day can turn into a hard one. Even after that encounter he still tried his best with a half smile. I hope management gives him the recognition he deserves. Great job Cody! Way to not let others change your mood even when it’s difficult. Aside from Cody the atmosphere is always welcoming and all the servers I’ve encountered give their all. Great staff , & great food selections.
Be prepared to wait on the weekends. First rate food. Huge portions. This is one of those places where you spend an hour trying to figure out whether you want savory or sweet for breakfast, only to realize you might want lunch! Just go with your first instinct, and you won't be upset. They also serve coffee with those mugs with thick sides. . .yum!
We went there for the first time this evening. Everything was amazing. I ordered my sandwich without onions, it came to the table with onions. My husband asked for another sandwich would be made, fully planning on paying for both sandwiches (he was going to eat the other sandwich for lunch). They remade the sandwich, and was so apologetic. They gave us a while new sandwich. Everything was absolutely terrific. We will definitely return. All of the staff was very friendly.
This was my first time dining at Black Bear Diner in Waco and I plan to go back. I went with a simple BLT and hash browns. They've got a large menu. I sat at the diner bar since it was just myself. My server greeted me promptly upon sitting. It was cool to see the cooks in action behind the counter. I'll order pancakes next time and orange juice. Their orange juice is squeezed in house.
This is a great little diner. The atmosphere is like something I would expect in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The staff were great and friendly. The food was wonderful and portions huge. The biscuits are worth noting--large, buttery, "cat's head" biscuits. Both my husband and I ended up taking half of our breakfasts home.
Had a great experience with our waitress, Allie. She was super attentive and was quick with drinks/food, plus her positive energy was contagious! The food was good, but the most memorable thing was the great service from Allie!
Me and my wife was eating a Black Bear. We had a great experience. Our server was excellent food was good, but I just had to say something. I saw one of the girls being bullied up front when I walked by all I heard was a blonde lady being racist and disrespectful to a young black girl and she looked like she was 18. She looked young. I don’t know exactly what it was about, but all I heard was your money is dirty your family’s dirty. That was very unprofessional and uncalled for when she was just trying to hand her money to the other lady host. I told my wife about it. We were kind of curious so we were looking up there and all I see is the blonde lady that was bullying the young girl standing in the middle of the way while she was trying to leave and the blonde lady shoulder bumped her and all we heard was you’re getting rid of good luck with having a job. Me and my wife come here a lot and we’ve never experienced or seen anything that disrespectful and racist not that I think about it when I go up there she is the only black server that serves. We had a few times we don’t remember her name, but she was a very sweet and delightful young lady that just really hurt our heart to see her get bullied like that. It seemed like she was mad and sad when she left if this is how y’all treat y’all black employees we will never eat here again.
First time eating here and the food was so good. Our server Allie was awsome, such a great bubbly personality, one of the best servers we have had! We will definitely be back and I hope we get her again!
I had such a great experience at Black Bear Diner thanks to our server, Allie. From the moment we sat down, she was friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. She checked on us often without ever feeling overbearing, made sure our drinks stayed full, and handled everything with such a positive attitude. Allie really went above and beyond—she knew the menu well, made great recommendations, and made the whole meal feel relaxed and enjoyable. It’s rare to find a server who’s both efficient and so kind, but she absolutely nailed it. If you visit Black Bear Diner, ask for Allie. She truly made our experience amazing, and I’ll definitely be coming back because of her!
My waitress Gabby was wonderful. Despite it being extremely busy, she was very attentive. She checked on my special request and my food was hot, fresh , delicious and filling. I ordered the oatmeal, spicy sausage patties, english muffin , orange juice and iced mocha coffee. All I can say is, I took a nice, Bear Hibernating nap after having breakfast at Black Bear Diner. 😁
I had the pot roast melt it was really good. Our waitress Allie was so helpful. The atmosphere was very calming and much needed. You can tell Allie is a people person. She checked on us just enough that we didn’t have to wait for refills or fell like we needed to drink more. Definitely recommend.
Exciting to have a Pacific Northwest-themed diner here in Central Texas! I appreciate the subtle woodsy black bear decor. The food is pretty tasty with heaping portions! Been here for dinner and breakfast now. Pot roast was great! Breakfast is good too, though the eggs ordered over easy came out on the done end of medium-well. Will have to give them another chance at that another time. The menu is massive, so I still have a lot more to try too.
Super cute place with good food! I loved the atmosphere and decor which struck me as unique, and the service was great. The food was pretty good and was pleasing to the eye! I had the vegetarian omelette, and while I wasn’t expecting it to be robust with flavor it was lacking a little for me but the pepper sauce they have there made up for it. Everything else was great though, and the biscuits are huge! If you go during busy hours you can expect a wait time but I have no issues with that. Overall a good dining experience and I would recommend it!
Okay, what can I say about this restaurant and the excellent service I received? A couple of paragraphs of praise and a job well done. First, let me point out my first impression. Upon entering the restaurant, I was immediately greeted with a warm welcome. The hostess seated me very quickly in a comfortable booth. My waitress, Erica, was polite and professional and took my order. I asked her for recommendations and finally decided on the Blackberry Stuffed French Toast with scrambled eggs and chicken sausage. Now, because I was really hungry, I also asked for an English muffin while I waited. It took a mild 15 minutes to receive my meal, and when I got it, it was fresh and hot. I love hot food. So many restaurants serve its customers lukewarm warm food as if it's a new trend to the publics liking. I appreciate for the money I've paid, that I am respectfully given a meal that is hot. So thank you. The French Toast was mildly sweet and packed with flavor. The blackberry compote inside was oh so delicious that it didn't really require syrup, and the chicken sausage was a savory delight in every bite. I was feeling so full that I didn't want to stop eating it. My waitress Erica checked on me without fail, and anything I needed extra was provided with a bonus smile. The atmosphere in the restaurant was busy but not overwhelmingly loud or unbearable. The staff were all in constant motion, keeping their customers happy and content. So, if you are ever in the area, stop by and give them a try because the breakfast is awesome, and they give good-sized portions that will satisfy the largest bear sized appetite. Black Bear Diner, you deserve an A+ for leading by example and making good on your mission statement... " We've always delivered on the promise of big portions of quality food in a great environment." Job well done and mission accomplished. I enjoyed a great meal and left with a full stomach and a smile on my face.
I got the brisket hash with eggs, home style potatoes. The brisket was a bit dry, but if you mixed it with the other items, it was good. The breakfast potatoes are excellent. The others in my party really enjoyed their food, especially the kids that got pancakes. Those all disappeared. There are plenty of menu items to satisfy any want or craving. The menus are cool, they come like a newspaper. I look forward to going back and trying something new. The eggs Benedict looked amazing, may have to give that a taste, and with those potatoes, of course.
This was our first time trying here. The cashier Nicole and hostess were very nice. Our server Alexis was awesome and made sure we were very well taken care of. I got the mini Volcano and my partner got the meat lovers omelette. He said it was good, the sausage was very tasty! Gave 4 stars because my pancakes were very moist and good. We got the biscuits and gravy too because I like to judge based off the classic..they were okay. They were huge, but really dry and the gravy was just gravy. Nothing too crazy but a better okay breakfast place. 5 stars for all service though!
The atmosphere/motif is cute. Our server was pretty good. Food was just OK. Blackened salmon was good, but it's hard to ruin salmon. Meatloaf was not what we expected. The consistency was that of some sort of pre-prepared/pre packaged faux meat stuff. The flavor was not distasteful, but it didn't taste like meatloaf...kind of a weird, bland Salisbury steak taste like in a frozen dinner...the gravy seemed canned and the grilled onions seemed to have come out if a box... The stems of all of our broccoli was black...like it had been stood up in the pan to cook and allowed to burn, but upon further examination it was freezer burn or mold or something else... We both got baked potatoes and the actual potato was OK, though its thin skin was more reminiscent of a boiled or microwaved potato than a baked one. The potatoes were wrapped in foil but that seemed to be for looks only...the crispy, thick skin on great oven baked potatoes was not there. There was a dollop of sour cream but hardly any cheese or bacon...a but disappointing. The prices are good, but we were in the mood for some good, hearty comfort food and this place barely hit the mark. It wasn't very busy on a Friday evening which might have been a sign...
Well, it’s a cute diner, can’t argue there. Our server was dynamic. She kept our beverages topped, made sure that our food was hot and made sure that we didn’t need anything. Kinda had a Denny’s smell, couldn’t it my finger on the why for that. We’d go again but just feel the food is average l. I do want to see the service and cute atmosphere are awesome!
We came here expecting a very different experience. We first walked in and loved the atmosphere and vibe but that was soon washed away. Our waitress was less than attentive and not knowledgeable about the menu. We waited a very long time to get our food while the staff and kitchen help were laughing, talking and cutting up. When our food finally arrived it was less than mediocre. We really hope this place gets it together because it would be a great experience with a few changes.
I have enjoyed Black Bear Diner in many states for years now. The Black Bear Diner in Waco, TX is an absolute disappointment. The first day I visited for breakfast 5/13/25. There was a hostess and one person in the kitchen. Breakfast the morning was a catastrophe. My order was wrong. I ate what I ordered and left the rest. One the way out I asked if there was a manager present and I was told there was not. On 5/14, I thought picking up dinner to go would be different. It wasn’t. I was missing part of my order and my call to the restaurant to ask about the missing items went unanswered. The phone only rang. I made one more attempt to reach out to the restaurant and I spoke with a female that stated “mistakes happen. Sorry, we are short staffed.”. The line disconnected. The Waco location of BBD will not see my business again.
Food took a very long time! Waitress told us she forgot to place our order! While four tables were served before us. Our first time experience was less than good. Food just okay. I had the Parmesan crusted burger with five onion rings. Don’t waste your money food is just bland not much flavor.
Well, this didn't go well. So I missed my invitation to have 2 free dinners. So I had to pay. As you can already tell, this wasn't a worthwhile 2 visits. So we went Friday night, just as it was getting packed. We took a few extra minutes to review the menu. The best part of the meal was the salad. The look/presentation was nice as well. However, the flavor and food temperatures were lacking, and our server was new, so it was a bit off as well. The story of the restaurant was very impressive so we decided to try again on Saturday night, early. We told the person that seated us and our waitress that we didn't have a good experience the night before. That kinda helped, maybe... the flavor and temperature. Their "famous" mac n cheese is different from a bag. Both the biscuit and muffin weren't good. Both were dense, so that was a fat or butter issue. The biscuit was slightly gooey. Spending $80 and 2 visits allows me to say, "Don't go! Make it a hard pass.
Personally, I was hoping for a better experience than the last time I came, but was immediately met with rudeness/ unprofessionalism. I was meeting some friends for lunch, and when they arrived, the host asked whether we wanted a table or a booth. I personally just wanted a table, and said table. He looked at us and said, “Well, we have REALLY BIG booths if you’d rather have that.” Ok. The only reason this was being said to us was because we were bigger. I personally didn’t want a booth. I think the condescending tone in the comment left me with a sour taste. I would have said 'booth,' but I didn’t, and I was immediately met with a rude comment. I really wanted to give this place another chance; the last time, the waiter was incredibly rude, forgot about our table, and completely rang up the wrong items. I gave them a little break, but I’m not sure if I’d want to come back. Since this is what I was immediately greeted with. Service is kind of everything to me, and being met with rude staff every time has soured this place for me.
