Restaurant San Francisco Yécora Reviews
Right off Valencia and 16th, Picaro feels like a little escape to Spain in the heart of the Mission. The menu is extensive and unapologetically protein-forward. Two to three tapas for two people is more than enough if you go classic: tortilla de patata (eggs and potatoes done right) and gambas al ajillo - a generous portion of shrimp swimming in garlicky olive oil that demands extra bread. Everything comes with a bread basket and salsa brava, and that smoky heat absolutely wakes up your appetite. Inside, it’s rustic and intimate, layered with Picasso posters, flamenco accents, and vintage-style prints that give the space a nostalgic old-world charm. I love this place!
A very approachable, unpretentious Spanish cantina serving heaping portions for what would normally be small tapas plates. Highlights include: * Alcachofas à la Plancha (Fresh Grilled Artichokes), a novel find with a slightly nutty taste, and a bit of crunch and tender heart texture. * Pulpo al Ajillo (Garlic Octopus), almost an entree size, well-seasoned, flavor-forward. Great for large parties, budget-friendly family meals, or a casual catch-up with friends.
A very lively tapas bar. The sardine plate is worth the trip alone. (The Roxy is across the street)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5-Star Experience at Picaro Tapas! I’m happy to give Picaro Tapas a well-deserved 5-star review. From start to finish, everything exceeded my expectations. The sangria was perfectly balanced and refreshing, the seafood paella was flavorful and cooked just right, and the parrillada was absolutely delicious—tender, well-seasoned, and served hot and fresh. What truly made the experience exceptional was the magnificent service. The staff was friendly, attentive, and professional, making sure we were comfortable and taken care of throughout the meal without ever feeling rushed. I’m giving 5 stars because the combination of amazing food, great atmosphere, and outstanding customer service made this a memorable dining experience. I will definitely be coming back and recommending Picaro Tapas to others!
I have been coming here since I was able to walk. This place has the best tapas in all of San Francisco/ Bay Area! The food is fresh and comes out fairly quickly even if they’re busy! They also have a Sangria happy hour! $14 for a pitcher of red or white sangria!! They sometimes have a mariachi band come by!
I absolutely love Picaro. I first came here in 2017 for a friend's birthday with a big group, so got to work through lots of the menu. Over the summer I re-discovered Picaro post pandemic and have brought both friends and family here a few times this year. This place is an institution. Amazing service and old school, authentic comfortable ambiance in a city that keeps getting shinier and flashier. The price point is fantastic, especially during happy hour. They pack so much flavor into their dishes. We love the patatas bravas, pulpo al ajillo, morcilla, and the albondigas. Don't skip out on the oysters and sangria for happy hour. Afterwards, you can pop a block over to ABV for a cocktail or easily walk back to Bart. Lately when family is in town we opt for Picaro, even over fine dining and trendier options. Can't wait to come back over the holidays with the parents!
Excellent selection of tapas and loved the happy hour pitcher of red sangria. The patatas bravas (spicy potatoes) came with extra pitcher of sauce — most appreciated. You could dunk every piece! Albondingas (meatballs) and gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp) both had plenty of delicious sauce for sopping up with the bread. We got extra bread no problem. Prices were good and even better if you pay cash, We are definitely going back!
Authentic European Spanish food: I know as I lived in Spain. There are many Spanish customers. The food is simply amazing, better than in Spain! Huge variety of Tapas. The waiters are trained professionals, knowledgeable & real. Prices are extremely reasonable. I believe this was my best meal ever in San Francisco & I have had very many! Thank You We'll be coming back ASAP.
Picaro is a Mission District treasure! Authentic Spanish tapas in a warm, unpretentious setting with crowds that are fun and relaxed. We loved the Pulpo Al Ajillo (garlic octopus, $13) – tender and flavorful over crispy potatoes. The Rabo de Toro (oxtail stew, $13.43) was rich and delicious. Grilled Trout ($19.24) was good, though slightly bland, but still well-prepared. The Flan ($7.28) was outstanding! Service was friendly despite a small mix-up with our order. We also enjoyed a Sangria Pitcher ($16.84). Pricing note: 4% surcharge for credit cards, but unlike most SF restaurants, they don't add those annoying "SF Mandate" fees. Refreshingly honest pricing and generous portions. This is the kind of neighborhood spot SF needs more of – great food, reasonable prices, authentic atmosphere. Highly recommended!
Lovely place. On the small side so was hard to have conversations with your friends. We did have a waitress spill the bottle of sangria we ordered but no personal stuff was wet. Few phones got wet but nothing damaged. I would think they would have comp. Us that 1st bottle for the trouble of spilling it all over our table, but they didn't. We had the meat and seafood paella. Which was good. Doesn't compare if you have been to Spain and had it thier like we have. But still good dish.
Excellent spot for tapas and shared plates with friends or family! I recommend a variety of plates and a paella to share. All of the food is solid and I personally recommend you try their Spanish tortilla, fried calamari, asparagus, and seafood paella! Not to mention, a cold glass of sangria or cava!
My friend brought me to Picaro and I'm glad she did! The food was fabulous and the sangria delicious. I keep thinking that I should write down the details of why a particular dish is so good, but when I'm in the moment, enjoying the meal, I forget. All I can say is, I will return to Picaro!
Nice Spanish restaurant with a long menu. Offers a whole page of tapas options. Would be a fun place to come with a group, order lots of tapas, & share. Lots of seating, but the tables are quite close together so it can be difficult to hear others when it's busy and lots of people are talking.
Food: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 3.5/5 Overall: A good selection of tapas to choose from. Would I come back: It’s my go to for tapas in the city. The extended review… Food: 4/5 - Got a mixture of things and all of them were all very tasty. The good thing is you can order many things to taste. Of them I always get the Spanish Tortilla which is an egg and potato dish. Service: 4/5 - Friendly and attentive service. Ambiance: 3.5/5 - There are times when a band will come in and walk throughout the restaurant playing loud music. That’s one thing I can do without.
Came on a Saturday night for dinner, made reservations the morning of. We split 5 tapas, a paella, and 2 pitchers of sangria (plus copious amounts of bread) between 5 people and we were full. Everything was pretty good, with the octopus and the bread + sauce it came with being the best things! The paella was a bit off texturally, and didn't have as much flavor as I'd like. The outdoor seating area out back is super nice, would come back for drinks and tapas again.
We were seated right next to the bathroom, which was really uncomfortable. We politely asked if we could move to the empty table next to us. The hostess told us it was “reserved for the night,” but during the entire time we were there, no one was ever seated at that table. The situation was frustrating enough, but what made it worse was the hostess’s attitude, which came across as aggressive rather than helpful. Because of this, we ended up leaving. Very disappointing experience, especially since it could have been easily resolved.
