Busy Sunday dinner, despite seemingly staff shortage, the service was still impeccable and the house signature Hinomaru ramen was really delicious. Shout out to the floor staff who’ve been running back and forth just to make sure we were all well taken care of!
Fantastic. Love this place. Curry ramen and shishito peppers was must buy.
BEST ramen in town! Our server, Jay, provided excellent service, was very friendly. I got the Tonkatsu Shoyu w/ Honey-Glazed Gochujaru Ribs and it was amazing. The broth was rich and delicious. The ribs were super tender. I asked Jay for something spicy to add and he brought two suggestions, a chili oil and chili powder. My partner got the HinoMaru ramen and she was super pleased! It was our second time, and we'll definitely be back again (and again).
My personal favorite thing to get is a small "fireball" in any pork broth based ramen. Noodles and broth are really good and quite large (wasn't a fan of the chicken broth), but pricey at around $13 a bowl. Cute atmosphere and attentive staff. Usually crowded but I never have to wait for a table either. My go to on a rainy day!
Excellent rahman at a good price...spicest miso I've ever had. But delicious!!
One of the best noodle restaurants in Astoria Ny. This restaurant is my daughter favorite I will continue to support this restaurant.
Aug 2019 - I was walking down the street one evening and decided to stop in. At the first bite, I realized that I wished I'd be in town for a few more days so I could have dinner here every night, have a different bowl every night. Amazingly delicious, as authentic as you can find outside of Japan. Definitely putting this on my to-do list for the next time I visit NYC.
Never ever forget to ask for Crispy Kale omg soo good I even saw a 5 yrs old eat it. The first time I went I ordered pork ramen and it was sooo delicious and even the chicken spicy ramen was great. Next time went again I ate 3 crispy kale(don’t judge me judge the chef😬) but the veggie ramen was ‘okay’ they could have done a lil better. Over all not much of wait time, call 15 mins ahead for reservation they really don’t take them lately but still I do because it’s cold outside. Very clean and beautiful Japanese looking place I loved it and I’m going again and again 🤤 also the staffs are very friendly and nice 👍🏻
Such an underrated spot for ramen, but I didn’t come for ramen this time. The rest of the menu holds up just as well. Came back here on a hot and humid summer day. The (not pictured) takoyaki, spicy tuna don, kani roll, and cold soba are all fantastic choices for a hot day. Hot tea is great quality too.
Delicious Ramen & great service. Cute place, small, intimate. Had the vegetarian ramen and crispy kale. The kale melted in my mouth, lightly fried and sprinkled with Parmesan and sauce. The Vegetarian ramen was good, a lot of red ginger!! Simple green tea mochi ice-cream dessert, and Sapporo beer!
An unassuming little ramen shop from the street, but it goes deep into the plot and opens up into a long dining area. The server was polite and accomodating. And that's not even to speak on the meal. Universally across both tables of people, the food was phenomenal. Healing, rejuvenating. We could not thank the men in the kitchen enough.
Last Thursday, I went to Hinomaru for the first time and I must say that their crispy chicken skin is probably the best I’ve ever had, period! The chicken ramen also very tasty! The guy and lady server on that night were so friendly and attentive too despite being slightly busy. Overall, I had a great experience and will definitely come back to try other menu!
Every item from the well worn iron teapots to the ginger tea to the ramen itself bleeds aade by hand flavor that's incredibly hard to find in New York at affordable prices. This Ramen restaurant pulls it off in spades though. The staff are incredibly polite with good suggestions. The broth is flavorful and rich, tasting of slow simmered stock instead of cheap bullion, with well rounded subtle flavors instead of an over reliance on MSG and salt. Excellent portions and very affordable pricing as well. The tea selection, while simple is very well made. The ginger tea was incredibly smooth and fruity; the matcha steeped with actual leaves instead of the normal powder affair. Overall a must go for food in Astoria, I can see why this place spent time on the Michelin guide.
This is a really nice, cozy ramen spot with amazing food and even better prices! The restaurant was pretty busy when we went and there was still plenty of room for my two friends and me. There are plenty of options for food and drinks, we were all extremely happy with the quality, taste, and price!
Perfect ramen 40.774964 -73.909116 Just at the end of the N/W subway on Ditmars Boulevard, this casual Astoria noodle bar headed by chef Koji Miyamoto proudly displays its 2019 Michelin star and its earlier 2017 Bibi Gourmand. In May 2023, the signature house-made tonkotsu shoyu ramen (Kagoshima style) with pork, kikurage, menma, scallion, red ginger and roasted garlic ($16) swims in a rich and creamy port bone broth with seasoned pork. The flavour is really well balanced between a little spicy and red ginger and roasted garlic. It evokes memories of Japan. So delicious. Far from home, Hinomaru serves excellent ramen. Highly recommended.
This surely has to be one of the best ramen places in NYC. The pork slices are outstandingly tender and flavoursome. Tried the broth on its own without the garlic oil and chilli, then tried the rest on its own and then finally with the chilli bomb. It's like a journey of flavours. The little details like have the sea weed stuck on the bowl rather than soup. Very deserving of the one star.
My wife and I tried HinoMaru the other day. We initially passed by it after grabbing breakfast in Ditmars Steinway. Both of us felt that it was going to a good place based on the outward appearance (judging a book by its cover). After doing some research online, we gave it try, and we're glad we did. We started with the Chicken Karaage and a Soft Shell Crab Maki. Both were okay. I guess it's a ramen joint after all. For our mains, we shared a bowl of Hinomaru Ramen and a plate of Egg Chahan. We really should have paid a little more attention to the spicy rating on the menu. My wife couldn't handle the 3/3 heat rating for the ramen, gave up after a few bites, and proceed to fill up on fried rice. The creamy pork broth was absolutely amazing, but we really should have gone with the Tonkotsu Ramen instead (and ask for Shichimi Togarashi). This normally would have resulted in a non-review from us (since we didn't order correctly), but then we discovered their magical poached egg. Normally, ramen shops' poached egg has a semi-soft white with a running yolk. HinoMaru's poached egg has both the white and yolk running. It's really a sight to see (and poke at). Service is friendly and the decor is typical sparse ramen shop with an outdoor seating area. We're just glad to have such an authentic ramen shop in Queens and don't have to head into the city for our ramen fix.
Me and my home girl come here almost religiously. The ramen is just THAT good! Broth is always flavorful and their portions are filling. I find myself walking out of here feeling extremely satisfied with my meal. One of my favorite things to do is put on my friends to this spot. It is definitely worth checking out.
The ramen was great. The tonkotsu broth had the perfect amount of saltiness, the honey glazed ribs were delicious and I liked the beer options. I also like the general variety of the menu and can't wait to return to try more dishes. This might be the best ramen I've had in Astoria. Some other places like Susuru are great too but they lack the options in broth at the moment. One last note, the service was really good. The food came out really fast and the waiter made sure to check in on us throughout the meal.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “I had a great experience at Hinomaru! The fried chicken and crispy pork ear were perfectly done, and the Hinomaru ramen was absolutely delicious – it definitely left me wanting to explore more of the menu. Each dish was packed with flavor, and it’s easy to see why they’ve earned Michelin Guide recognition. I can’t wait to come back and try more of what they offer. Highly recommended!”
Such a nice restaurant. Delicious ramen and super friendly staff. A must go if you are anywhere near Astoria! 100% recommended!
HinoMaru Ramen 🍜 Astoria is a local Japanese💎 Restaurant. HinoMaru specializes in the famous regional northern Sapporo style and southern Kagoshima style broths. HinoMaru Ramen is the go to spot I bring my favorite people there to experience the Speciality of Regional Japanese Ramen. The broth is prepared over slow boiling for 17 hours to develop the flavor. It is my favorite place in Astoria. I enjoy the wooden style aesthetic of simpler times. I’ve been going here for over 7 years and the quality of food, service and atmosphere is excellent. We love ordering the classic Tonkotsu Shoyu Ramen on a nice cold day and pairing it with a delicious tea or hand crafted cocktail. If you are looking for a date night spot or a place after a long week for a solo ramen…this is the right place. Cheers 🍻 Updates 🗽🍜🍜🍜 Nigori w/ Crème de Sake unfiltered traditional on🧊
This ramen spot is truly a hidden gem in Astoria. The quality of the ingredients is outstanding, and the food is packed with flavor—easily a 5/5. The service is consistently attentive and welcoming, and the atmosphere has a perfect balance between cozy and lively. It’s a fantastic place to enjoy dinner with friends or family. I’ve been coming here for over three years, and every visit delivers great food, great drinks, and a great time.
I got this ramen delivered so can’t comment on the atmosphere, but it was quite good and a pretty reasonable price. I got the spicy miso ramen and it was very flavorful. It was not very spicy unless you drank a lot of the broth and got a clump of spice all at once. One thing to note, if you do get delivery, you will need your own chop sticks or spoon because that was not included.
this was my first time trying RAMEN and did I choose the BEST place. large dishes put together like a work of art, quality ingredients, served hot! I had the SEAWEED SALAD (so fresh), SHUMAI (art), KOREAN SPICY CHICKEN (hit with the right amount of spice, very tender slow cooked chicken, fried to perfection) and CHICKEN RAMEN (add avocado, tiger shrimp, mushrooms- just, wow) excited to come back and try more dishes— everything was savory, made with pride and the prices are so good
Back to our favorite ramen spot on chilly Friday night, it was so packed that you could obviously tell they’re understaffed. Nonetheless, kudos to the floor staff who worked so hard despite being short handed. This time we opted to try their summer special ceviche ramen and it was really delicious!
The food is really good, the service is great. I liked everything I tried. The only thing I would improve would be the space in the back, where large groups can fit. It’s in front of the bar, but there are also some things of storage and it made a little bit of visual noise, however, it is not bad, maybe it’s because I pay a lot of attention to the spaces and decoration.
The Uni cream ramen was unreal! The best ramen I’ve ever had! The amount was big and I ended up super full but also extremely satisfied with all the food. The price was ok like $$, and we did the outdoor space for our dinner during the end if summer. Will be back again for delicious ramen. Highly recommend this place for ramen lover and also highly recommend the Uni cream ramen!!!
EDIT: I appreciate the response! I have amended my review from 1 star to 4 given that you said you've changed the issue and sounds like it was a mistake. All forgiven. I look forward to my next time there -- makes me miss Japan. The food was good, so it pains me to write this review, but the suggested tips are deceitfully wrong. The claimed 18% one is actually 20%, the 20% is 22%, etc. Extremely dishonest and possibly illegal
The food was good but a bit pricey, i.e. 4 pieces of gyoza as an appetizer. The ramens are a decent size and very flavorful. The chicken ramen is not my cup of tea...it is just pieces of chicken, not cut up and with the skin on it, thrown in a ramen bowl. The lemongrass and hinomaru ramens were tasty. The seats are a bit cramped since it's just a bench and there isn't a space to put your jacket or belongings.
I know this is a Michelin ramen spot and with that name comes...expectations. I was pleased with my curry ramen but just wasn't the best I've had. Perhaps it was lacking some umami. I also ordered the gyoza which were okay, nothing special or memorable. The short ribs on the other hand were my absolute favorite. So much flavor and tender. It made me regret sharing! I also had some green tea mochi. Good but nothing to rave about.
This was my second time at Hinomaru. The food was great. We ordered many bowls of Tonkotsu shoyu ramen. The yuzu margaritas were good too. We brought a cake there and there was 25 dollars fee for that which we were told before hand so, keep that in mind if you plan to do that. Nice place.
Easy location in Astoria. The ramen here is delicious and respectable. We have the chicken ramen and the tonkotsu shoyu ramen. The chicken could’ve had more flavor and not so dry, but the ramen noodles were legit. We enjoyed the place and the service was prompt and courteous. Credit card accepted too which is rarity for ramen places. Solid place in Astoria
Came to Hinomarus with the brother and his girlfriend because... who doesn’t come to ditmars and try new food right?! We walked up and down the strip and landed on this place cause it’s been a while since I had some Ramen. This spot had indoor and outdoor seating which was part of the appeal. We were seated quickly and attended do promptly which was awesome. My brother Started off with the shrimp Shumai and I picked up the Tokayaki (fried octopus balls) and the Fried Pork Gyoza... hands down— appetizers alone got it it’s 4 stars cause they were legit and the best thing I got from here. For the main course I got the house special Hinomaru with one fireball and my brother got the Spicy Miso with the fireball on the side... both of us were unable to finish the bowls for two reasons, 1. They were indeed FILLING and 2... unfortunately they weren’t really all that. Compliments to the chef and the team for setting a beautiful tone and presentation and of course the food was good but the appetizers were way better than the main course and that makes me a little sad, because usually you want the entree is supposed to knock it out the park.
The place is very scenic with it's nice atmosphere and can easily seat parties of about 6 or less with little to no wait time. Ordered some appetizers and ramen and it was great. Absolutely loved the place but I'm a hard critique for ramen. I'd definitely go back but could use only the slightest of improvements for 5 stars.
FOOD: The ramen I received was very tasty, the poached egg inside was amazing. The chicken was nice and the vegetables were good. There was corn, which I'm not a huge fan of, but overall good ramen. I also had dumplings, which were (of course) a huge upgrade from the packaged ones. To top it off, the lemonade was quite sour but tasted okay if you sipped a little at a time. INSIDE: It was very clean, no dirt at all and the tables and chairs were cleaned up. There were also cool things on the wall and a clean bathroom (that had funny jokes inside) OVERALL: Although it had some high prices, I really enjoyed this place, either if you never had Japanese food or if you did, this will be a nice idea for yourself and maybe even others. Totally recommended.
Ate here for dinner after gym and it’s the best decision I ever made. This place has amazing appetizers and ramen. They have Michelin stars and I think they definitely deserve it. Takoyaki was delicious even though it’s not the authentic one. it’s just a deep fried takoyaki version. The ramen great portion and very tasty. Lot’s of toppings and the broth is really good not too salty which I like. 😊 I highly recommend trying this place out.
Decent ramen place. We got karaage, miso ramen and nagoya ramen. The kaarage was nice. Crispy and juicy. It is a bit different than some other places but i cant quite put my finger on it The two ramens were pretty good. They were both chicken broth so i might try a pork bone broth next time. The service was great and they were able to accommodate the miso ramen with no spice to it.
A charming spot that I was led into by smell alone- and to be allured by aroma on Ditmars is a complement of itself. The service was sweet and helpful. We started with the popcorn chicken and Takoyaki. The 🐙 was truly unique and cooked great. The popcorn chicken was lacking in flavor but the citrus combination created a nice taste. Now onto the main event!! The Hinomaru ramen just called to me. I was delighted by the sweet mixing of poached egg and bone broth- super unique and delicious!! Pork cooked to perfection. Spice level was perfect. Left nothing but clean bowls and full stomachs. Wish there was a coat rack so I didn’t have to put mine on the floor. Great overall. Looking forward to the next time!
If I want to order spicy miso as in the picture advertised, I will have to actually pay $24, not $19. So it's deceptive advertising.
I read so many great reviews of this restaurant online so I had to try it. I’ve ordered for pick-up twice now. The first time I got their signature HinoMaru ramen, which was excellent. The second time, I ordered the Shoyu ramen which, according to their website, includes the following: Chicken Bone Broth. Braised Chashu Pork, Yuzu Zest, Roasted Garlic, Menma, Bean Sprout, Scallion, Poached Egg, Nori. For some reason they included kikurage mushrooms and red ginger (which I didn’t ask for), as seen in the photo and I did NOT receive yuzu zest, bean sprouts, the poached egg, or the nori. I’ve never left a negative review but I’m not sure how to feel when half of the ingredients aside from the broth and the ramen were missing or wrong. It still tasted ok but for the price, I expect to get what I paid for. Maybe it would have been different if I had ordered for dine-in but at this point, I don’t think I’d recommend ordering takeout from this place.
"Minimalistic" nice way of saying shaky cracked wooden tables and wobbly bench seating with no back support. If have a bad back, this is not the place for you. Need to invest and make more comfortable. For appetizer, we ordered the pork dumpling which fell apart when picking up and tasted funny so we passed. The ramen however, was the saving grace. Both hinomaku and glazed ribs ramen were tasty with just right amount of spice. The lychee sodas were also excellent. Uneven experience so would recommend stick to the ramen and get a gelato next door.
Tried the signature Hinomaru ramen. Mediocre at best. A solid broth is the foundation of a good ramen, disappointed at the lack of body, flavor and overall richness of the broth in the signature dish. The ramen bowl wasn’t piping hot, Didn’t really care much about the quality of the noodles either. Overall a blah experience. Service and ambiance were good.
This is usually my go to spot for ramen and have been coming here on and off for quite some time. It's been awhile since I moved away from Astoria but decided to give it a go since it's been awhile. Today's ramen was way below average. Had this been my first time here, I think would probably never come back. Hope that today was more of an off day but my ramen was a bit flavorless and the pork chashu was very stringy and chewy. Also ordered the kimchi buta dish, and was very disspointed to learn that I just paid $8 for a bowl of kimchi. Where is the pork? Did they forget to put it in?...
The service was good but the ramen was just ok. I thought my noodles were a bit under cooked. It’s a very nice place with lots on the menu. They have a lunch special which will save you a few bucks. The bathrooms were also very clean. I do not live in the area but if I was, I might revisit.
I’m disappointed with the okonomiyaki here. It tasted off. Not sure how to explain it. It just didn’t have the flavor I know it should have. There was very little cabbage in it as well. Making it a very sad appetizer. The tonkatsu ramen was poor. The broth was just ok and the pork pieces were very fatty. The noodles were fine and im not sure why they give you a poached egg. That doesn’t make ramen better. In the end I just won’t return here.
Ehh. Really thought it’d be good. But it wasn’t. The service was okay yet a tad rushed and the ramens (mine vegan and theirs not so vegan) were both OVERPOWERED with ginger which I happen to love buuuuut I wanted ramen NOT a cold remedy which left my nose dripping.. The poached egg was heart breaking..lol In short if you’re familiar with ramen you’ll understand this was simply mediocre if not sure you might love it but please go forth and experience MORE ramen.
Always good from this place. Crab roll is a must! Update November 25: Unfortunately I had the worst ramen in my life. I got the tonkotsu ramen and my husband the Hinomaru one and it was the worst ramen dishes we have ever tried. Please if you thinking of trying anything besides the lemon grass chicken or uni ramen just go somewhere else. These are the only good things they have and I have been coming to this place for years.
I have been a loyal customer for years! This used to be one of my favorite spots in Astoria. However, overtime prices have slowly gone up while quality has gone down. I have a friend who got food poisoning a while back after eating here. I insisted it couldn’t be from their food until I suffered the same fate. Their “Grade Pending” sign seems fair. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll return after my recent experience. With that said, the service is always kind & efficient. One star less for atmosphere cause I loved being able to eat at the counter pre-Covid. Now it’s used to hold to-go orders.
Do not come here if you are pregnant or have any back issues. The only sitting options are tiny stools. I left with terrible pelvic pain and it ruined my night. I think the business keeps these awful stools on purpose to prevent people from staying long. We got the check as soon as we finished our ramen, even though we still had unfinished appetizers and sake. Interesting how quickly they brought the check when we were trying to get their attention all night and had to ask 3x for glasses of water. They do not prioritize customer service, and I guess they don't have to since they have a large volume of people coming in. Separately, the ramen has drastically changed since covid and is not remotely comparable to how it used to be. It is still decent ramen, but not worth the horrible dining experience if you dine in.
We ordered 4 takoyaki’s ( ordering it every week for quite sometime); while eating I noticed that each takoyaki is 50% smaller and the bottom is flat. ( pretty sure it’s been cut in half ). I went back and told the cashier about it and he said it’s the same as before and they just buy those and fry it. ( what a lame excuse ) Never coming back to this place. I don’t mind the price of the takoyaki ( around $9 per order 5pcs ) but cutting it in half and charging the same price. You can only fool me once.
Will not return. Spent 100$ and oriental worker still harassed me and my wife for tip and was disrespectful. Very poor service. Will not return
Unfortunate experience. 40 minutes passed without being served or checked in on during a light evening. Only ordered fried rice along with a bowl of ramen. My company and I watched as our 3 of our dining neighbors received their full meal within 10 minutes. The situation was obvious, but staff unfortunately only responded that the kitchen was busy. Honesty would have been welcome.
Was too disgusted to even try the food. My cup of water had a dirty rim and particles inside of it. I asked for another cup of water and the next after had particles also. Ironically, my friend and I noticed the grade was pending and joked “what if the have flying roaches back there”. I then looked up the restaurants last food grade which was a “C”. Come to find out, we were not exaggerating and they received a C for having evidence of MICE AND LIVE ROACHES near the food. They were evaluated back to back and failed each time. At that point, I had to leave not only because of the rating, but because of my own personal experience. Once I got up to leave, a server got up and said I couldn’t leave because the order was already placed. I reminded her that we only sat down maybe 10 minutes ago and that I was informing her that I was informing her that I would be leaving as a courtesy. I didn’t want to make a scene in the restaurant and let her know in front of other patrons of their unacceptable rating. It wasn’t until my friend who is lighter complexed said “Goodnight” that she backed off. We ended up going to Botte across the street. Will not be back!
