This is my 2nd time coming here. It was so good that I had to come again. Great authentic East African comfort food! Food comes out quickly and is delicious EVERY SINGLE TIME! No matter how finicky your palette may be, you will find something absolutely delicious and filling! This is my new favorite place!
The food was so flavorful! Had sambusa appetizer- could eat like a dozen of them! - so good and it’s dipping sauce! We had the Nyumbani and Kumuhana, with coconut rice and a side of kuku- drank warm delicious hibiscus tea, and ended with the coco mango dessert! 10/10 for flavors and portions! Very friendly service; quick serving of food! Definitely going back here over and over! Parking was available street side via a Detroit parking app (was like $2 for 2 hrs)… definitely recommend going here for anyone looking for some authentic East African flavors!
Cool “neighborhood” eatery. Tasty foods with nice warm spices. Lamb shank was off-the-bone tender. Fried fish perfectly seasoned and good texture. Loved the spiced rice. Fizzy drink very refreshing. Service was friendly and efficient. An unpretentious relaxed vibe. Great place to try out African cooking and flavors.
Had a wonderful experience at this African restaurant! The vibe was warm and has a welcoming atmosphere that made the whole evening enjoyable. The food was incredibly flavorful—rich spices, well-seasoned tender meats, and delicious sides that really brought everything together. You can tell the dishes are made with care. Service was friendly and attentive as well. I definitely recommend making a reservation. Looking forward to coming back! 🌍🍽️
Worth the visit! I give out a lot of 5 stars but if I could rate this place higher I would. The food was exceptional and not a single crumb was left on anyone’s plate after the meal 😅. I would recommend the mbuzi (goat) and the kumuhana (grilled chicken)! Both the spiced rice and coconut rice are delicious as well and you can get half and half. Overall for the price, the food, environment, and service are well worth it. This restaurant gives a great insight on Burundi cuisine and has joined my rotation of restaurants in the area! 10/10 would recommend.
Food quality - 9/10 Price/ Worth - 8/10 Ambience - 8/10 Service time - 9/10 Reception - 8/10 Would I come back - Yes 👍🏽 Food tried SAMBUSA - 9/10 PLANTAINS CHIPS - 6/10 KUMUHANA - 8/10 SAMAKI - 9/10 COCO MANGO - 7/10 JI PASSION FRUIT - 8/10 Tried East African food for the first time with no expectations, but walked away impressed by the amazing flavors. Need to improve - More appetizers options and add alcohol beverages.
Great food! Great staff! This is a must try & try again!! I'm glad I made a reservation. They were busy.
Absolutely wonderful experience. Service was prompt and friendly, and the location and atmosphere were both really great. Lovely building with a laid-back feel. And the food was exceptional. My mom got the intore eggplant stew, which was savory and hearty, and wonderfully prepared. They allowed her to get half-sizes of the 2 rice options (spices pilau and coconut rice) as well as the peanut stewed spinach and the yellow beans, and a generous serving of fried plantains. Everything was so flavorful and hearty. I got the nyumbani beef, which was perfectly tender and so delightful. I also got the pilau and coconut rice to try them both, and I got the peanut stewed spinach and plantains. Everything was instant comfort food - so rich and warm and full of flavor. I also got an African tea, which was Lipton black tea with added spices and frothy milk. My mom got the spiced coffee, which was a wonderful blend of spices and nice strong coffee. We were both too full to get dessert, which was a real shame because they all sounded incredible. I would love to come back and try some more dishes. Highly recommend if you are in the area and looking for a great experience!
This might be the best restaurant in Detroit. The food is unique, and always delicious. Atmosphere and service are nice, and it's not super expensive. We've had pretty much all of the entrees and all are great. Nyumbani is my favorite. Love the plantain chips with peanut sauce. Passion fruit juice was delicious. Never had the dessert because we are always stuffed - the portions are huge.
This was our first time trying African cuisine, and we absolutely loved it. The flavors felt surprisingly close to Indian food in the best way. We tried the hibiscus tea and the spiced coffee—both were excellent. The plantain chips with the dipping sauce were a classic and delicious combination. For the main course, we had Ugali and Intore. Ugali felt very comforting, almost like homemade South Indian food, and Intore was rich, flavorful, and reminded us of South Indian dishes as well. The service was quick, and the ambiance was great. Truly one of the best restaurants in downtown Detroit!
WOW — what an unforgettable experience! From the moment I walked in, I was struck by the warmth of the staff and the vibrant atmosphere. I ordered the Intore (eggplant stew), and I can confidently say it’s one of the best meals I’ve ever had. The flavor was deep, rich, and beautifully layered — every bite was a delight. The menu describes Intore as “also a cultural dance — and this dish is sure to enchant!” They couldn’t be more right. It was soulful, comforting, and absolutely enchanting. I picked up my order as takeout since I’m traveling for work and dining alone can sometimes feel awkward. But the team greeted me with such genuine kindness that I immediately felt at ease. Next time I’m in town, I’ll definitely be dining in — and hopefully bringing colleagues with me to share this gem of a restaurant with them! The ambience is bright, cheerful, and thoughtfully designed. The whole experience — from food to service to atmosphere — was exceptional. I seriously can’t wait to return.
The Detroit area has been my home for the past 13 years & it continues to amaze me because of places like this. The food scene is scattered throughout the city. I like this location because it’s right off Woodward, the Q line, & New Center area…with easy parking. The Environment: Stepping inside you immediately feel transported. The vibe, music, & adjacent area falls together like a well oiled machine. The airy environment is well curated like a larger upscale-casual chain, which it isn’t…it’s a single location; a lot of thought went into its’ execution. The Food: Wow! I had googled Ethiopian and this popped up and I ended up going…still thinking it was Ethiopian and not Burundi. In ways it similar but more toned down. I sampled the goat dish (Mbuzi) and savored each bite. I sensed signature tones reminiscent of Ethiopian, Yemeni, and to some extent the West Indies dishes…think rice & proteins with less common spices. Spice level, it’s not…it’s simply flavorful…not hot. I also tried the Tamu (Avocado & Passion fruit pudding) and was surprised with a bright & sensational flavor explosion; not common to North America. Summary: It’s not often that I render 5 stars but I feel they earned it. I’ve travelled & lived in many parts of the world and have sampled a lot. Baobob Fare, for me checks off many boxes of what I find great. I plan to visit again.
Baobab Fare has been on my list for a while to try. I wasn't intending my first experience to be a takeout one. I am so glad I made the choice to pick up food and finally try what many have been talking about. I've been in the restaurant before to pick up coffee. The Burundian decaf was excellent as was the spiced coffee I got to go. This visit was no less exceptional. The entrée was very well cooked. The chicken was moist and very flavorful. The sides were very generous. These included beans, plantains, and rice and were well seasoned. I also got the mango and coconut coulis dessert. It was excellent, fresh, and tasted delicious. I’m anxious to be able to sit in the restaurant on my next visit and experience the excellent customer service I witnessed on both visits. As an aside, the packaging of the carry-out bags and the logo in general are fun, colorful, and a nod to East African culture. I look forward to my next visit to try more of their unique dishes.
We just ate dinner there and it was above and beyond incredible. My wife and I both had the Nyumbani. The portions were generous and the beef was tender and flavorful. The staff was so warm, friendly, and welcoming. Next time I'm in Detroit I will check it out for sure and I highly recommend.
When my wife first mentioned this restaurant to me, I will be honest, I was quite unsure, mostly because I can't have spicy food, and a lot of African food can be spicy. I was pleasantly surprised though. The food here was incredible and was by far our favourite food while in Detroit for 2 nights and 3 days. We chose the two vegetarian dishes as well as the plantain chips and dip. The flavours were incredible. All three of us were in heaven with these dishes and we were so stuffed when we left. The portions are generous and the staff are fantastic as well. Food came out quickly and hot. My only criticism of any would be to bring the appetizer out before the mains. But other than that everything was flawless! We're saving this as one of our favourite restaurants in the D. We'll be back for sure. 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Absolutely delicious food. All the dishes come with coconut or spiced rice and fried plantains which was great. You can have an option of both types of rice in one dish which adds to variety. The chicken was tender and juicy. The beef stew was super delicious too. Portions are generous. The staff were super nice and service was very friendly. Many thanks, we really enjoyed our lunch 🤩
Baobab was incredibly delicious. We were recommended this restaurant by 2 people separately, and it was one of the best recommendations I’ve ever had for a restaurant. The food is incredible; I ate the mbuzi, plantain chips, and sambusas. I would order all of these dishes again. Next time I’m in Detroit, I will absolutely be coming back. The service was fantastic, and the space is bright and modern. If you want a delicious meal, this is the place to stop.
Have been wanting to try this place for a while and finally got to go today. We didn't make reservations but was able to get a table in about 30 minutes. There were so many interesting dishes to try on the menu but we went with a spiced coffee, goat shank and flash-fried fish, plus a side of the creamed spinach stewed with peanuts. Everything tasted so good and I wished I had room for more. We will definitely be back!

Food was the most flavorful and quality ingredients I've had in the city in a minute. Very quality ingredients for a more than reasonable price.

Portion size was large and offer vegetarian and vegan options. The food was overly oily, the okra with ugali was extremely fibrous and oily. The mocktail was excessively sour. Can't explain but an unappetizing smell emanated from the kitchen area. The food looked better then it tasted

The food was average and overpriced for what it was. It seemed pre-cooked rather than freshly prepared. Unfortunately, there was a hair in my dish. Although the staff offered to remake it, I declined to avoid wasting food. Still, I was disappointed that there was no discount or any effort to make up for the issue.
