Our favorite steakhouse restaurant. We’ve had a lot of dinners in this town and nothing comes close to the coziness and deliciousness of this place. Servers are top notch, and the food they serve us is outta this world. I disliked all chocolate desserts until I popped my cherry with their CHOCOLATE PUDDING. Totally recommend. Enjoy!
Jar is an acronym for Just Another Restaurant, which specializes in classic American dishes but elevated. Last night was my first time dining for dinner but it won’t be my last. I love how low lit it is and every seat in the house is very comfortable whether you sit in a booth or one of the tables. Our server John was also very knowledgeable, funny, and did a great job. We arrived 20 minutes early and didn’t expect to be seated until our booked time but they offered to seat us early and did so, which was really appreciated. They have many great menu options so I will have to come back again to try a few more but this time I started with the Roasted Beets and they were really delicious. There was a healthy size of Burrata with it and the beets were perfectly sweet. For my entrée I chose their signature dish The Pot Roast. It was one of the better ones that I have ever had and eating it with the creamy horseradish on the side is a must. Honestly it’s so good I would go back for that dish alone. For dessert I chose the butterscotch Budino because it’s one of my personal favorite desserts and it did not disappoint. It was a large portion but still went quickly. Overall it was a really nice dinner and I would recommend to anyone for any occasion. We sat next to a large work dinner, but I think it would also be perfect for a date or a dinner with friends or family. I will be back in the near future.
More than a marvelous time, the world inside the Jar dining room has a different kind of energy to other LA establishments. The food is beyond perfect, in all honesty, and the atmosphere is always relaxed and never pretentious. For the flâneur in all of us.
Best restaurant EVER! Everything is delicious and bursting with flavor! Lemongrass chicken is a must as well as the brussel sprouts, purple yams, skirt steak, castelfranc salad, etc.
Amazing restaurant, the food is delicious and the service was great
Excellent service. Their drinks selection is really good and their menu is really good. Great place for any occasion
One of the best restaurants in all of Los Angeles. Phenomenal meal, great service, and was overall very pleased with both the experience, welcoming staff, and food as a whole.
Went here for my 32nd birthday and was honestly blown away. Food is great.
This was one of our best meals ever. The halibut was flaky, moist, and delicate. The sauce accompanying it made it complete. The braised short ribs were outstanding. The sides were fantastic especially the Brussels Sprouts and the onion rings. Jar is still one of LAs best restaurants. Don't miss the banana cream pie.
We were the first reservation and were treated like the only diners in the restaurant the whole time! Our server Chuck was spot on and fantastic. The food was, as always, exceptional. Cannot recommend Jar restaurant highly enough.
I had eaten at JAR years ago when it had opened and then somehow it had dropped off my radar. I am so happy to have re-discovered this gem of a restaurant. The interior is a bit dated, but still wonderfully comfortable with its elegant, private supper club feeling. The service and food are at a level you rarely find in LA. In a post COVID world I have come to expect weak or understaffed servers even in the finest restaurants. Not so at JAR, from the host to the servers the staff are professional, knowledgeable, and top notch. The food is extraordinarily sublime. Their take on American classic / retro inspired dishes is Michelin star level. The dishes are familiar sounding but executed in such a modern context that everything on the menu and the multitude of specials explode on your plate in both taste and presentation. This is a reinvention of a chophouse and quite simply extraordinary. Unlike many of the celebrity chef’d restaurants, Suzanne herself is almost always in the kitchen. Moreover, she takes the time each evening to go from table to table to greet you and ask if you are enjoying your meal. I cannot enthusiastically rave enough about this unique, wonderful restaurant. Although the name stands for “Just Another Restaurant” this place is anything but that, it is rare find and by far still one of the best restaurants in Los Angeles.
What a fabulous spot with divine food and excellent service. The space is classy & warm, with a modern twist. The lemongrass chicken and dirty gin martini were both heavenly. Congrats on 22 years, Jar!
This is hands down the Best Restaurant in Los Angeles. The food is spectacular, artistic, and literally never misses. It manages to simultaneously be interesting and unique while homey and comfortable. Dinner at the bar is the best evening.
Consistently Great! The cocktails are terrific. Try the gin gimlet served by two very helpful and friendly bartenders. We shared the pear salad that was just enough for two and the duck fried rice is a real treat. Not greasy at all and the best this side of Shanghai and you don't have to brave the flu. We also really like the lemon grass chicken which has a bit of heat and the chicken is moist and tender. The flank steak was cooked perfectly and spread out on the plate looked like it was right out of a magazine. The banana cream pie was a nice way to end the meal and was not conventional in anyway. Just creamy and delicious. After all these years Jar continues to deliver top notch wonderful food and ambiance.
I’ve lived in LA for the last three years and must say that we were served the best meals ever at JAR. The wait staff was kind and helpful and certainly knew their products. Everyone were were in contact with were both professional and knowledgeable .
The food here is absolutely amazing! If you want a filet mignon that you’ll remember for the rest of your life? This is the place to go. Top quality food, service and just a joy to go to. I’ve made effort to eat here at least once a year, that has been hindered recently with Covid. But once things normalize I’m going here! Ordering takeout doesn’t do this place justice. You have to go there and experience it. The only negative I have to say about this restaurant is that as the evening progresses- they dim the lights- a lot. To the point where you can barely see what’s on your plate not to mention read the menu if you arrive later in the evening. I bring this up because when the lights are dim, you have other patrons pulling out their phones and using the flashlight- some folks just aim their light carelessly flashing in other customers eyes- it harms your dinning experience. Getting flashed in the eyes with another customers phone flashlight because the ambient light level is too low is not something you want to remember during your dinning in this establishment. Beyond the mentioned above, eat here only if cost is of no concern. It’ll be pricey but worth every penny I assure you. The meats, the veggies, the cocktails- everything is made with top quality ingredients and loving care. I cannot emphasize enough how great this restaurant is.
Love this place. Has been my go to special occasion destination for years. Just wish the outside seating waiter wouldn't push the upsell so hard, especially to the point of embarrassing me with my dining companions. And yet, I still had leftovers, in spite of suggesting 5 side dishes for the 3 of us, multiple times, and then asking my guests after I repeatedly said no...
A most comfortable dinner at jar last Thursday.. The outside dining experience was great and our waiter John was delightful and most helpful, It's knowledgeable of the menu and a very pleasant person. The ribbon was cooked perfectly and their cream spinach is 2nd to non
Superb dining experience. I've been to Jar a couple of times and EVERYTHING from the bread to the coffee is absolutely delicious. Their mashed potatoes are exactly the way they were meant to be. I've only eaten fish there (halibut and salmon,) both were cooked to perfection and next time, I will order beef. The purple yams topped with creme fraiche are INCREDIBLE. Love this place.
Most memorable meal, maybe ever. Even though the food is simple, it's exquisite: fresh ingredients, perfectly seasoned, including the cocktails and coffee. While the vibe inside is a bit funky and the clientele older (hey, it IS pricy, so I guess that part makes sense), I'd eat there every day, forever, if I had the income of its regular diners. Take me back!!!!!!!
Great service and drinks. A pretty broad menu with lots of choices but I'm embarrassed to say I just loved the fries and onion rings. Sure my entree was great, but damn those rings were good. Worth the trip.
Tonight was our second time visiting Jar for dinner and it did not disappoint. I’m so glad upscale dining still exists in LA. It’s refreshing to be in a restaurant where you can hear each other speak and not have to fight with the music. The meal was so good, I want to try and make it a point to visit more often. I started with the Lychee martini, and the arugula salad. But the star of the evening was the ribeye cooked to perfection and the purple yams. Combined with the pea tendrils, the meal was spectacular.
Very romantic scenery, the food was amazing and the ambiance made it extra special. We had the lamb, which was perfectly cooked. And the chicken which was moist and flavourful.
If we could give Jar 10 stars, we would—and then we’d try to sneak in a few more. We live just up the street and have officially decided we’re never moving… solely because we love this restaurant that much. The food? Impeccable. The vibe? Effortlessly cool. The pot roast? Life-changing. Thank you, Suzanne and team, for making every visit feel like a special occasion. Long live Jar—our forever neighborhood obsession. – Josh & Fabian
Just the best!! Iconic and always amazing!! Love chef Suzanne
A hidden Gem! The food was full of flavor and the portions were just right! Get the Pot Roast with the homemade applesauce and squash, it's incredible! The steak and pork chop were seasoned well and cooked to perfection! Service was top notch! Our waiter was fun, genuine, and kept the courses flowing perfectly! Cannot wait to go back!
Such a delightful restaurant with top notch ingredients served in an intimate setting. The owner, a renowned chef, is out and about amongst the guests when she’s not in the kitchen creating a superb dining experience. Jar is by far my favorite restaurant and is a must stop in LA.
Jar is a Modern American Chophouse that stands for “Just Another Restaurant.” However, for me, it is not just another restaurant. Jar is a very intimate, small, and delicious restaurant with excellent service, great food, and great ambiance. When entering the restaurant, I already knew I would have a wonderful time. We had perfect seating, and our waiter, John, and the wait staff were very on top of it, and everything came out in perfect timing, not too slowly but not too quickly. We started with appetizers and drinks. I am all for a White Russian, so that was my first drink, and then for the table, we got a dozen oysters and black mussels. I'm actually not a fan of mussels, but these mussels were really delicious. For my main meal, I got a skirt steak. John recommended that each of us get one side and share for the table. I went with the purple yams, which was delicious! I had never had them before, and I was surprised by how really, really, really good they were. As for dessert, we got three for the table; this included the chocolate pudding, the banana cream pie, and a slice of red velvet cake. I also got a cappuccino because I have to get coffee with dessert. The desserts were a little disappointing; the only really good thing was the banana cream pie. The red velvet cake was really dry, and the chocolate pudding was just blah. Some things to remember: If you’re going to head to jar, which I recommend, they do not have valet parking which I did not like. We ended up parking on the street, but we found out after the fact that we could have parked in the garage across the street. If you want to dine inside, you must show your vaccination card and ID. If you do not have it, you can dine outside. However, I feel to get the whole experience of Jar, inside dining is the way to go
Years ago I ate here and had an unforgettable purple yam. This recent time around the food was overall great, but there could have been a bit more char and flavoring on all dishes across the board. I’d go again, but it isn’t at the top of my list for must return to restaurants. That said, the slow cooked greens were heavenly.
Delicious classics and many reinventions. The atmosphere is so regal and chic but not overly done. It is a true exception in San Francisco in terms of service and atmosphere. The food is good if not great and i would choose Jar for many good conversations with close friends to discuss life changes while having a meal deserving of the occasion
Clean quiet atmosphere. Good customer service. The food was good could use a tad bit more flavor.
I really enjoyed my meal here. It was surprisingly generous for an upscale restaurant. Drinks were stiff. Staff was pleasant and informed. Atmosphere reminded me of an old speakeasy. Has the lamb. Cooked rare and was savory. Not over seasoned. Quite hearty.
Enjoyed a romantic date night here with a delicious fulfilling meal in a casual upscale environment. The menu is varied with accessible comfort foods and more sophisticated choices, all equally delicious. My only complaint would be that the bread and butter has to be specifically ordered, and bread was not warmed. Butter was hard and impossible to spread. Silly thing, but expect better at this price. The rest of the meal made up for this, though.
The food was good and the service was exceptional. My ribeye steak was only average for this stature of the restaurant. I have had better beet salad. The yam side dish was very good. The chocolate pudding and banana cream pie were excellent. Overall a good experience.
Food was good. I have had better food in previous visits . I wish they had more than one 1 Cabernet choice for wine (a little dry and chalky), and I found the service a little scattered--forgetting to bring a dish etc. It's still a great restaurant but it's been better .
Food was fine but nothing exceptional. Room feels dated. Looks exactly the same as 15 years ago. The hostess was one step short of rudeness and was definitely a downer.
Food was mid, best thing was the pot roast, which is a 7 on a good day. The cake taste like it’s 5 days old and from Costco. Server was cool, good service. For 200 dollars less, go down the street to Mastro’s for 10x the flavor environment. Good if you want hospital food, or just don’t have any tastebuds. Water was fresh tho!
Not special in any way. A mixed menu with no focus or style. Had squash blossom starter and potato chip house specialty but underwhelmed despite well prepared. Had the 12oz ribeye. Cooked perfectly to med rare but was thin and the absence of a bone seemed like some zing was missing; it was good, just not great. The sides were good, creamed spinach and really loved the duck fried rice, actually my favorite item of the meal. Good wine list. Terrible dessert options: all squishy puddings or soft baby food type items. That was disappointing. Good service. Very noisy and not a pleasant place to have an intimate convo...just too loud with little noise dampening features. Bare decor. Restroom could definitely use some attention; might have been fresh at some point, but not when I visited. Not a good look. Probably would not go back given the many other options in LA, especially for steak, but was an OK try.
This review is based strictly on MY plate of food and MY experience with the food. I had the lemon grass chicken with duck fried rice and fries. The highlight of the food, sadly, were the fries. The chicken tasted as if I had popped my grill open and slapped it on there. Nothing out of the ordinary to be quite honest. The meal looked nice, but was hardly nice tasting. Was expecting more due to the high reviews, but was led astray. Was slapped with a 80 bill and called it a night. The place looked nice and the people were great. But let's face it, the food is what truly counts in a restaurant and the true reason you go there in the first place. I would STRONGLY suggest taking your money to a better tasting restaurant.
Don’t recommend. They ruined our Valentine’s Day. We made a reservation for 8 pm and arrived at 750 to a line out the door. They told us approximately 25 minutes to wait which was a blatant lie. After about an hour of waiting on our feet we left.
I came here for my birthday and was excited because of the reviews but the food was terrible and service was worse. Our table was outside which is fine but it was sitting on a pile of gravel rocks. Everyone else was sitting in nice chair while my party was forced to sit in hard plastic chairs. Our waiter checked on our table once and we had to ask other workers for the server. Most of the table ordered the salmon and it was completely burned with no flavor. It came with a lemon sauce that tasted like straight olive oil with no lemon. The best thing the fries and spinach. Overall a bad experience and would not recommend this place.
We came here years ago and the service was terrible. We were given gift cards for the terrible experience. We didn't go back for years but decided to give it another try. At the end of the meal waiter came back and said can't honor gift card. Said that person no longer worked there and had no record. Manager said chef wouldn't honor it. Ridiculous. Very overpriced underwhelming meal at full price. Now never going back. Food was average and manager attitude very insulting.
To say I was excited to give this place a try is an understatement. Upon glancing at their menu they have some of my all time favorites. As a vegetarian who can't eat wheat/ starch one of my favorite things to do is find nicer dinimg establishments (often times steak houses) that serve phenominal accoutremont a la carte. I like to order a bunch of them and make a nice meal of it. At first though I'm sure the server thinks Im just a cheapo but by the time you add all my a la carte side items up I often times end up spending far more than even a nice steak would habe cost. Anywho, so yeah, I love it when I find a new place that does it "right" while perhaps putting their own little spin on some of the classics. Originally I thought that's what I'd found when I stumbled upon Jar. Unfortunately I was so very disapointed. I ordered to 2 orders of the deviled eggs 1 order of brussel sprouts 2 orders of creamed spinach This was all to accompany the cauliflower au gratin I ordered from Forma, Santa Monica (I'll save that story for another time.) To make a long story short the food that ordered from The Jar, which I was literally ecstatic to taste, due to all the wondeful reviews, was so overwhelmingly blehhhh. It had no taste. The robust, layered flavor profiles that one has come to expect from places of this nature was literally no where to be found. Which is soo sad because I was ecstatic and hoping to add it to my repetoir. If I had a kind suffeation for the chef it would be, PLEASE SEASON THOUROUGHLY. A dish as simple as creamed spinach can be so decadent, so rich and soooo layered with labsolutely flavor profiles that dance all over the palatte. Unfortunately that's not at all what I received. I definitely wouldnt consider odering from here again unless something drastically changed. The one bit of silver lining I was able to garner from this was the warm, genuine and sincere service I received at the hands of Ceasar, he was great, very friendly. In fact, go so far as to say his service left a better taste in my mouth then any of the actual food. Just my thoughts.
Suzanne is a disgrace. She takes no responsibility for errors in her kitchen. So insecure about herself instead of offering hospitality. If anyone should be canceled it’s her. No customer service. All pride. The job of a chef is pleasing the customer. Not her, focused on her twisted ego. Big disappointment. Spend your money elsewhere.
BEWARE Valentine’s Day Reservations If you plan to make a Valentine’s Day reservation here, please be cautious. My partner surprised me with a reservation at Jar and paid $500 for Valentine’s Day (February 2026). When we arrived, there were around 40 (unhappy and confused) people waiting to be seated for their reservations. We were told it would be a 30-minute wait for a post 8pm reservation. However, while waiting, we learned that others had already been there for 45 minutes to over an hour, despite also being told their wait would only be 20–30 minutes. Looking around, most tables didn’t even have food yet. The atmosphere in the restaurant was extremely uncomfortable and stressful. After waiting 30 minutes, we requested a refund because it was clear the delay would be much longer. The manager told us we could not receive a refund until Wednesday of that week and would not take any of our information to confirm it would be processed. Fortunately, when we called on Wednesday, someone at Jar did honor the refund. The manager’s response was notably detached and lacked concern for the stress faced by guests. When asked if the system went down and caused this issue, the manager shifted the blame on the patrons by saying "people just overbooked the system". After reading reviews from the past four years, it seems this happens every Valentine’s Day. Jar may provide fine service on regular days, but their Valentine’s Day operations feel misleading at best. No one wants to spend $500 on a reservation only to leave hungry after a long wait. Jar, get it together and get a clue.
We did not have dinner here. Arrived right on time for our reservation, but were forced to stand waiting for our for nearly an hour, so we left. Super noisy, tables literally on top of each other. Not enough staff. A party the same size as ours came in half an hour into our wait and were seated promptly. Seriously? We were dressed up and polite. We also drove over a half hour to the restaurant. My husband stepped out to call other restaurants for a table. Found one and we were very relieved that we had left Jar and the whole bad experience behind us. Another family of 6, with a reservation after ours, who were visiting from Chicago and had similarly driven a distance, split when we did. The entire experience was awful!
HORRIBLE VALENTINE'S DAY EXPERIENCE! Just like MANY OTHER DINERS, we were given a lackluster menu, ignored by our waiter, and crammed right next to the door looking at huge lines of other disappointed diners who had reservations but somehow no table for them? The food was so bad, the price SO HIGH, the desserts were worse than a cafeteria. If you still are booking them for this weekend's fixed price scam, CHANGE YOUR RESERVATIONS NOW! My $30 glass of wine was less than 4 ounces. It was our worst Valentine's Day ever.
I chose to book a reservation for Valentine's Day 2025 at Jar based on excitement regarding their menu. We've been wanting to dine here for a while and thought this would be the perfect opportunity. When I made the reservation I was called by the restaurant and given instructions about when to arrive, etc. I was not told at any point that they wouldn't be serving their regular menu and that instead they'd be offering a set menu. Our reservation was at 8:30PM; when we got there at 8:15PM as instructed, there was a long line outside of the check-in area. It was cold and no heaters were provided. Everyone in line had a reservation, that's how late the restaurant was. We stood there for 20 mins and no one from the restaurant came out to explain what was going on; diners were forced to educate newcomers to the line and because of the disorganization we were cut in line multiple times. Someone finally did come out but no apology was given, just a joke about love being everywhere (the joke didn't land lol). When we finally checked in, a half hour after our scheduled reservation, we were told it would be another 30-40 minute wait; we were herded, like everyone else, to the bar area-- no free drinks offered, no apology. That's when I first noticed the set menu. $175 for what looked, to me, like the worst options on their menu. No signature dish of Pot Roast, no opportunity to order sides a la carte. Again, this was never communicated to me. This was a shockingly bad experience and sorely disappointing. We did not stay for dinner because of everything mentioned, and it really ruined our Valentine's celebration. The lack of care and apology really hit me-- people choose to celebrate at a place for a reason and being treated like this (at a pricey, upscale place in Beverly Hills no less) was really a bummer. I really don't know that we'll ever go back. My first job was as a hostess at a Red Lobster in middle of nowhere Ohio and I swear to god we had more decorum and sense of care about us there than this place did on Valentines 2025.
This place is a scam. Do not come here. The wait was 2+ hours for a $200 per person menu. Inexcusable and unacceptable. By the far the worst treatment from a high-end, “luxury”establishment across LA, NY, and SF. The star at all is for the staff who are clearly world-class and doing their best to keep up despite a management team that insists on overbooking with no refunds.
Please save your money and don’t go here. They will waste your time with taking no responsibility! They took 500$ of our money A WEEK BEFORE for a reservation for Valentine’s Day. When we got there they asked us to wait 1 hour and 45 minutes for our table! When we asked for our money back they said we are not sure you can get a refund call us in a week to see what we can do for u. A new way of Stealing peoples money! Not counting the time and money you spend to get Uber move around in the busy city of LA! They couple behind us drove from San diego for this over booked shit show - felt bad for them.
