The place felt very warm and welcoming, and the design was beautiful. We went as a large group, and the restaurant was full, yet the service never slowed down. For appetizers, we ordered calamari and shrimp — both were very fresh and delicious. We tried the fish soup and the crab soup as well. After the salad, we had the seafood paella. The portions were large and filling. Prices were reasonable overall. We were very satisfied with both the service and the food. There’s also plenty of parking available right across the street.

Sol Mar Marisqueira Sol Mar Marisqueira is one of the best Portuguese seafood restaurants in Newark, New Jersey, and a true destination for anyone looking for authentic Portuguese food and fresh seafood. This is classic Portuguese cooking done right. The Portuguese seafood rice (paella-style) was outstanding — loaded with lobster, shrimp, clams, and mussels, cooked in a rich saffron broth with perfectly tender rice. Every bite delivered deep flavor and balance, exactly what you expect from a top-tier Portuguese restaurant. The shrimp Mozambique was excellent — large shrimp sautéed in garlic, spice, and sauce with bold flavor that’s perfect for dipping bread. We also had a Portuguese steak dish, which was hearty, flavorful, and cooked perfectly, and a grilled seafood entrée that highlighted the quality and freshness of the fish. To finish, the flan dessert was silky, rich, and one of the better traditional Portuguese desserts we’ve had, and the house sangria was smooth and refreshing. Sol Mar Marisqueira is not trendy or gimmicky — it’s authentic Portuguese cuisine, generous portions, and consistent execution. If you’re searching for Portuguese seafood in Newark NJ, shrimp Mozambique, seafood rice, or classic Portuguese restaurants in Ironbound, this place absolutely delivers. Highly recommended for locals and anyone visiting Newark looking for real Portuguese food. — ThePhillyFoodFanatic™ Trusted • Respected • Always Hungry #ThePhillyFoodFanatic™️

Been coming here with my father since I was a kid, this place is an Ironbound staple. Personally I was a fan of the vibe before the renovations but that doesn’t matter the food is still great and the service is still top notch as it has always been. Be ready to be greeted by the owner or his sons, the bartender/servers are all awesome people and this place is open all the time it feels like. This time I had the leitāo for New Year’s Eve dinner at the bar, everything was perfect. The kind of places you know will be around forever, because it always has been!

Sol Mar catered my dad’s birthday, and everything was absolutely amazing — from the initial booking to the very last bite. The staff was professional, kind, and attentive, and the food was beyond delicious. Every guest raved about it! I honestly don’t have enough words to express how impressed and grateful we are for the entire experience. Sol Mar exceeded every expectation, and I will 100% be using them again for future events. Highly, highly recommend!

We were happy to find a restaurant that stays open late! The waiter was able to sit us quickly, at one of the outdoor tables as we requested. The food quickly arrived & did not disappoint at all. Everything was delicious & the flavors brought me back to my country! Miguel was very attentive & made sure we enjoyed the experience. All of the employees worked hard to make sure every guests was taken care of. We will be back soon!

Staying Newark on business and was told to go there for their fish!! Phenomenal!! Swordfish was fresh caught and the serving was enough to feed a family. Bottle of wine and two fresh fish dinners for $109 …. Unheard of in today’s world!!! Anthony provided great service… All in all a must if you are in the Newark area

Always a good time here. Party of 5 . We overstayed our welcome. The staff was great. Sangria. There are two vegetarian options. One option is a vegetable paella, and the other option is a vegetable plate with rice beans, vegetables, and two boiled potatoes. It’s not the most fabulous looking plate, but it is delicious and a good option for myself who is the only vegetarian in the party. The veg paella is very good however it’s super large and I know that if I take it home, I probably wouldn’t eat it so I don’t wanna waste it, but the vegetable pie is a good option if you have someone to share it with. My husband ordered salmon. My friends ordered a T-bone steak, beef, short ribs, and garlic shrimp. We had an abundance of olives and bread and cheese on the table as well as we ordered a bottle of water. We were so full that we couldn’t have dessert. However, my husband took the lemon cheesecake home my friend also took that home. I wanted to take the crème brûlée home and I would’ve appreciated that I was told that they would not prepare the crème brûlée like they would in the restaurant meaning that they put the sugar and then they toasted so that you can have that hard shell on top. Basically what I was given in a plastic container was something that looked like yellow pudding and I really didn’t appreciate that. An assumption was made that that was OK to give to me. Because it was not so I handed it back to them and we did not choose to take that home. My only request is, please advise the customer that if you take something home, it may not be prepared the way that it would be prepared at the restaurant - That that’s my only request. The restrooms are downstairs, which is not convenient for someone that’s handicapped. However, perhaps in a different part of the restaurant there’s a handicap restroom. I’m just not aware of it. There’s parking across the street with an attendant, and the parking is free with a few handicap spaces. However, the gentleman says that he will watch your car for you until you come out and basically that means when you come out to your car, you really should give him a few dollars for doing so. I’m not sure if this is something that the store is aware of or approved, but we’ve always parked there and we’ve never had a problem with our car. We highly recommend the restaurant we always dine in the Villa Nova room, which is the main dining room. A more dressed down type of room with TVs is available if you just wanna walk in and be comfortable instead of sitting at a fancier dining setting. I recommend this for occasions such as anniversaries and other occasions. The staff is great, always accommodating. The owner if he’s there, he’ll stop by and chat for a minute.

Our “go to” place for great Portuguese food in Newark… The place was utterly fantastic, the shrimp and garlic sauce was unbeatable, the Chilean Seabass is the best I’ve ever had… The staff was so courteous, and get Miguel as your waiter. He’s the best, also, there’s parking right across the street, good parking for being on ferry Street in Newark… I delete a fantastic place… You just can’t beat this place!!

I recently visited this hidden gem to celebrate my wedding anniversary, thanks to a recommendation from a family member. I went with my parents, husband, and a couple of friends, and we were all excited to try it out. I had high expectations, and I’m happy to say the restaurant truly exceeded them. The food was absolutely fantastic. One of the standout moments was when our steak arrived, served on a roof tile, such a unique and creative touch that immediately caught my attention. For appetizers, we ordered mozzarella sticks, which turned out to be a full meal rather than just a starter, as it came with fries. It was a pleasant surprise, and we ended up enjoying it even more than we expected. For the main course, most of us went for steak—though my friend opted for chicken. I can confidently say the steak was one of the best I’ve had all year, and considering I’ve dined at many restaurants, that’s saying a lot. It was perfectly cooked, juicy, and just bursting with flavor, simply flawless. My friend really enjoyed her chicken too, which was tender and flavorful, a nice alternative to the steak. To top off our meal, my husband and I ordered a "Happy Anniversary" cheesecake slice for dessert. It was rich, creamy, and absolutely delicious, the perfect sweet ending to an already incredible meal. Overall, I highly recommend checking out this restaurant. It’s a true hidden gem in the Portuguese dining scene, offering great food, impeccable service, and a memorable experience. If you're looking for a place to celebrate a special occasion or just enjoy a fantastic meal, this is definitely the spot!

Im a big foodie from New York and after hearing how great this place was from my Husband we finally got to give it a try. I ordered the snapper and my husband got thr Picanha. I have to say, he was right. The food was just delicious. My snapper was nice and juicy with a nice sauce but crispy bottom from probably high heat cooking. The sides were perfect. Spinach was delish and beans were so good. I have to say the food was just overall great. And I def would come here again. Nice homey authentic Portuguese atmosphere.

First time dining here and will definitely be back! We sat in the Villa Nova room, even though the room was large it still felt cozy and loved the atmosphere. Our reservations were early on a Saturday so it wasn’t too busy, but by 6/6:30 they were starting to get their Saturday night dinner rush. Started the meal with the shrimp in garlic sauce appetizer. The shrimp were nice and big and cooked perfectly. The garlic sauce was so delicious we couldn’t get enough dipping the bread to soak up the excess. For dinner we ordered the Paella for two and the Steak Portuguese Style. When dinner came we were in shock, the paella could have fed a small village! There was a good amount of seafood mixed and the flavor was outstanding. The steak was just as good, it was cooked well and was a nice piece of steak. Lastly would highly recommend the sangria. We had the red, but it came in a few flavor choices, that will definitely try next time we go back.

Classic Portuguese style restaurant in ironbound. Absolutely a staple of the local food scene. This restaurant has been around for quite some time and has earned it's stay. With a bar, casual dining room and a more formal dining area this place has alot to offer. Haven't been there in some time and was happy upon my return. My wife and I both loved our meals and will definitely be back soon.

The very best in newark, CARNE ALENTEJANA!! And best special of the day "arroz de cabidela" (blood rice) and ofcourse the SARDINES!!! PRESENTATION alone speaks for itself. But all were worth the amazing road trip we had to get there!

First time dining here recommended by a friend who lives nearby. Definitely worth the visit. Everything from the olives to the paella to the dessert was amazing. Paella says for two but could definitely be a meal for four. Highly recommend. Will definitely be back.

I have been to a lot of restaurants in the Ironbound section of Newark, and Sol-Mar has been the best so far. From the service to the food, just an excellent experience all around. For appetizers, try the calamari, garlic shrimp, and chorizo. The sliced bread the bring out is good but even better dipped in the garlic sauce from the shrimp. For the main course there are so many good dishes to choose from. Pork cubes with clams is a nice simple dish with a lot of flavor. The skirt steak is done just right and tender. The salmon had a ton of flavor. And my favorite dish here is the braised beef short rib. Supper tender and hard to finish cause of how much you get. The Sangria is a good compliment to the meal also.

The calamari dish was the best I've ever had! The service was attentive and courteous. We enjoyed the paella immensely and thought it was delicious!

Our favorite restaurant in Newark. Authentic, outstanding food in an atmosphere that is almost impossible to find anymore in NJ. Perfectly cooked pots of seafood in amazing sauces, great steaks, good selection of Portuguese wines, perfect Sangria and iced cold Super Bock. Staff is really friendly and attentive.

Great, traditional Portuguese food! We had the Bacalhau à Bras and their salmon and shrimp dishes. They offer fresh cheese with their delicious bread and olives. We ended dessert with poached pear in Port wine sauce. Couldn't have had a better Portuguese dining experience! Don't change (but maybe play some Portuguese music here and there!). The decor is also beautiful and makes one feel like they are in sitting at an outdoor restaurant in Portugal. Perfect!

We used to go to Newark exploring the restaurants. By the reviews, we decided to go there. Everything was delicious, the servers were very atencious and honest. Our suggestions are: bacalao with veggies, grilled robalo.

This place is excellent. First visit left me craving a second visit. I did the Portuguese style steak with ham and a fried egg on top. Perfectly cooked and sauce jam packed full of flavor.

Great food and service! The servers where all very friendly and polite. The amount of food was insane, I got the monk fish rice with shrimp and it was delicious, enough for four people. Definitely recommend

Wonderful little place. As someone who just got back from Portugal, I can say you really do get the feeling that you are in Portugal. The food is fantastic. Portions are enormous, honestly not sure how one person is meant to eat a dish by themselves. The photos are the skirt steak and side chips and rice it comes with.

The best Paella we had! Reasonable price with big portion and it’s delicious. The clam with Garlic & Cilantro and Shrimp Garlic Sauce are very fresh and yummy. The restaurant has parking, which is a big plus. Very recommended.

Always love the food when I visit NJ, great clams in garlic and cilantro sauce, shrimp in garlic. Seafood soup also delicious. Lava cake with ice cream was delicious!

Everything we had was excellent, including the red sangria. The service was attentive without being intrusive. We parked in the strip mall lot across the street - not always easy in the Ironbound.

We have been dining here for years and are always satisfied. Love everything on the menu. Our waiter Ramon is the best!! Always Great conversations and very professional! He gives excellent service and just an all round great guy 👍👍 Also, cozy atmosphere in the dining room. Really one of our favorite restaurants to dine. Always fun.

New experience, first time but rather favorable. The restaurant is on the fringes of the restaurant scene in the Ironbound section of Newark. There is parking available. For friends I visited with it was a repeat visit. I will probably revisit in the future.

Top restaurant in the Ironbound section. The best seafood, steaks, and appetizers. They have a nice variety on the menu and everything I've tried has been very good. My family and I go here all the time. The atmosphere is very pleasant. Waiters are attentive and Profesional. The food is worth every penny.

R

5/5 I would give more if I could. Not only are the staff the nicest and most attendant, but the food is the best. I had the filet mignon and it was the juiciest steak I've ever had. The aesthetics of the place definitely adds to the atmosphere. this place is definitely worth your money!

Girl seafood is excellent . Grilled Sea food plater for one can feed two people . The two grilled seafood plater can feed four . The sardine platter is good too if you like sardines . The cream burle desserts are not what I am used to… it doesn’t have vainilla bean or vanilla flavor .. like the French restaurants …. So the taste was weird but maybe because it’s a Portuguese restaurant not a French restaurant. They have tartufo it’s good and they have sorbet .. it’s also good . Service is excellent. Waiter is excellent too.

M
Marietta Williams

The food was nice, but the service seemed a bit rushed. The atmosphere was decent, although it didn't feel particularly welcoming to me. However, the prices were steep – a platter for $235 seemed excessive, even with fresh and authentic food. A more affordable option might have attracted a larger crowd at the seafood festival.

I’m not familiar with this area, but I needed a spot and chose this one based on the glowing reviews. I went in expecting a fancy setting or perhaps something with a truly authentic ambiance. While the experience was decent, it didn’t quite live up to the expectations set by other reviews. For the price, I was hoping for something a bit more special. It wasn't bad by any means, just not as impressive as I'd anticipated.

Food was good, but the waiter might need a bit more of training, he should know the menu better and ready to reccomend. I Was there around noon and waiter said that they had ran out of creme brulee??? And lastly, the gratuity was included in a table of 2; the service was not to par, but I just paid the bill.will not return there, many other places to eat in area.

The food was pleasant to the eye. The waiter messed up the order and that threw the whole mood off. He tried to compensate along with making the order right. The chicken was ok a little salty. The sangria was good. The price was a little too high for being disappointed and the food being ok.

A

Excellent service except for one clumsy new waiter. Excellent food, great turn out and good feedback from my out of the country family visit. Thank you Mr Nobre for your care and excellence in service and food.

Three of us got shrimp and garlic and we all thought it tasted bland, overcooked/ rubbery & also too much salt and overcooked. Not worth $29. The rice was fine, but the potato slices were overcooked and some burnt. We waited for the server, but he didn't come until later, and the restaurant was pretty empty (see photos). Not sure what took him so long to come out, or he was doing, but he was unattentive. They also charged us $4 for cheese we never ordered. It came to the table, we thought it was complementary. ***CHECK YOUR RECEIPT! *** The server added an 18% tip for himself on the bill. He never said anything about it, then brought over another receipt and handed us a pen to write in another tip -on top of the already added tip. (See photos). Awful and disgraceful service. Our first and last time here. I will NEVER go here again. We felt they were very underhanded.

**Terrible Experience at Sol Mar – Never Again** I rarely write reviews, but my experience at Sol Mar in Newark last night was so disappointing that it deserves to be shared. To start, the **sardines were undercooked**, which set the tone for the rest of the meal. The **shrimp and garlic** dish came out swimming in Tabasco sauce and oil, and despite its name, there was **no garlic to be found**. Our group ordered several **steaks cooked medium**, yet every single one—**all four**—came out practically raw. Not one was cooked to the requested temperature. The **beef short rib was dry**, and the **clams in white wine were chewy and completely bland**. What made it even more puzzling is that the restaurant was nearly empty, with only two other tables besides our group of 17. With such a light crowd, you’d expect the kitchen to get things right, but that clearly wasn’t the case. I was **totally embarrassed** to bring my family here. With the quality of food we received, I can confidently say **I will never return to Sol Mar again**. ---

After reading such great reviews I decided to make a reservation for Valentine’s Day. We booked for 8 o’clock and had to wait 45 minutes to be seated in the madhouse, seemingly double booked. The service was rude all around. Since this place was so recommended I was willing to overlook the poor service. We saw a bunch of plates completely full being returned to the kitchen. Unfortunately our food was just as disappointing. Our steak was so rubbery and had no taste, you couldn’t even cut it. The shrimp appetizer was just frozen bagged shrimp loaded in salt. We essentially left 3 full plates of food with no reason to bring it home. With such high hopes this restaurant was the biggest dinner disappointment I’ve ever had.
