We ordered on the spot and the wait was worth it! Absolutely delicious. I respect small businesses like this. Definitely will be back !
First time eating here last night based on reviews. The Best sushi in Rochester! So good!
Today was my first time trying out Sushi King, and honestly, it's the best sushi I've had in a LONG time. Would recommend!!
Came in for lunch. We ordered four rolls and were not disappointed. The rolls were very good and larger than we expected. The service was very prompt.
Food is delicious. Prices are surprisingly low. And the salad dressing is sold by the quart.
Best sushi around!!! My wife and I have been coming here for years. I would definitely recommend stopping in.
Best Sushi in Rochester area (and my guess is far beyond). Amazing presentation and great quality. Never disappointed.
Absolutely best sushi around the area. I absolutely love the rolls here! Fish is fresh and roll are deicious!
They have a great selection of Sushi and Sashimi. Always tastes fresh when I take it home and hour North.
Family owned business. Wonderful owners. Excellent sushi. Eat here often.
This place cures my depression every time I eat it. I dream about this place every night. They’ve taken half of my yearly salary in sushi and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love this place more than I’ll ever love any children I have. 10/10 just eat all of the sushi. If this review doesn’t convince you, I don’t know what will
Best sushi in Rochester! Before you go: plan for long wait times, including when picking up takeout. They are a small family-run business. Everything is made fresh.
this place is the best sushi place to go. worth the wait and the owners are so nice.
Their sushi is BOMB. Super friendly staff. My favorite sushi restaurant in all of Rochester. Be sure to order an hour before though, they take a long time. Very worth the wait.
One of the pictures displayed for Sushi King is their Tuna Lover's Platter. Some restaurants carefully plate for pictures. Theirs looks that good every single time, and it tastes as good as it looks. Every meal I've had here leaves me looking forward to the next.
My daughter and I literally just finished our food we ordered for the first time here for takeout. The food was beyond what we expected. We got the Kani Salad with avacado , crab sticks with eel sauce on the side , and Miso soup and even my 14 year old daughter said she is in love lol I can see us ordering from quite often from now on. The food was also so fresh ! 5 stars hands down in our book !
I have been coming here since they opened the store under the name of Kakachi about 5 years ago. They have always been outstanding! Heavenly experiences. I have always been impressed and always try new rolls. Everytime im amazed. I have had birthday dinners here and bring my friends all the time. The variety and complexity of the sauces he creates is ineffable how great it is.
Intimate atmosphere and the best sushi we have had anywhere. Never had a mediocre meal eating here. A little slow, but the food is worth it.
Delicious rolls, delicious everything, perfect service, I love this place, great for a dinner out or special occasions. Great decor and atmosphere. Visit to meet your sushi needs
I went for the lunch special, which is miso soup, salad, and 3 rolls. I got the salmon skin roll, sweet potato tempura, and spicy crunchy tuna rolls with hot green tea. Everything was amazing, including the service. Also recommend their bento boxes. There's something about getting a bento box that's so comforting.
The food was great, but the restaurant could use some renovations.
Great place, amazing rolls! The service is slow, which is perfect for a date or a night out with friends. Sushi was delicious and affordable.
The best Sushi in Rochester. I've had sushi by the sea in China, and Sushi King is on par with that. The service is a little slow so calling ahead is the smart thing to do. But either way, best sushi in Roc.
Excellent food every single time. Prices are more than reasonable. No glamour but once you visit this place, you wouldn't want to go to any other sushi joint.
Love this place! Everything is fresh and delicious. Great atmosphere as well the service is amazing. Very authentic but also cater to the newbies 😋. This establishment is a must go to. Enjoy!
Best sushi in Rochester. I have eaten here more than 20 times and every time I leave 100% satisfied. fresh ingredients made to order. Thank you Sushi King
Oh my goodness could I give a million stars please? I am literally blown away at the deliciousness of this sushi at this wonderfully owned local business. I have lost faith in good fish as in times past I have gone to certain places where the fish is not fresh there is a slight but distinct odor. I honestly thought it was me I thought something was wrong with me. Am I too picky? Did my taste buds change over time? Upon stepping into this clean quaint family owned restaurant, picking my food up to go, anxiously awaiting to open up my bag of sushi goodness I was not disappointed in the least. Everything was fresh vibrant and satisfying.Even the miso soup had this amazing flavor and they definitely did not skip out on the pieces of tofu. Yes there was a little bit of a wait I waited an hour. But that’s what you get when a place is so popular and everybody wants that piece of goodness. Just be patient it is totally worth it
We ordered take out last night with a set pick up time knowing from friends that timing can be off with pick ups. To our surprise the order was ready when my husband went to pick it up, right on time. Let me tell you it was some of the best sushi I have ever had. The packaging was nice, it would be nice if they wrote on the lids the number of each roll so you’d know what each are. That’s my only complaint, trying to figure out what was what from the order. Everything was flavorful and fresh. Beyond pleased and will order again!
The Sushi here is wonderful. Always have something new and the prices are great! Update 7/6/23 Wednesday - Saturday dine in Sunday - take out only Monday - closed Tuesday - take out only Thought this might be helpful since the hours don't reflect on Google. But always a great place for sushi.
It's currently my 8 year anniversary and I'm waiting patiently for my takeout order to be finished. Yes, the other reviews have mentioned the service can be slow, but it is so worth it. It's why we chose to order with them for our anniversary. It's why we order once a week from them. It's delicious. This is one guy rolling sushi, all day, every day with ingredients that taste almost too fresh for our location. Everything is made to order, right there, by the same guy. So depending on how busy it is, sure, you may have to wait. But do yourself a favor and take it as a moment to have a conversation or sit in thought. Slow down and wait. It'll be worth it, I promise you.
Only have done take out - they take a bit of time for it to be ready, but soooooo worth it!! Also was more cost $ when I got to restaurant as compared to online prices listed. But they are HANDS DOWN the best sushi I have had. Their food all around is soooooo freaking delicious! I've ordered twice and definitely plan to continue supporting this little local business 😊
Despite my date having a food allergy to SEAFOOD except shrimp (whoops!) there was a lot of options for vegetarians as well as people allergic to seafood...with that being said the menu is great, the options are great, the menu clearly determines whether or not your sushi is raw or cooked. The food is even better, I had tiger sushi...it was delicious. The waiter was very patient with us and attentive when we communicated what we wanted. I'd like to check this place out again when it is busy because we were the only diners on a sunday at 2pm during football season. If they can carry this level of service and quality consistently then I will be a regular!!
Hands down one of the best sushi places in New York State. He is an absolute artist with food and watching his knife work/plating is almost as much of a treat as the rolls themselves. I've been coming here since they opened and in 100+ visits have yet to be disappointed even when experimenting with new rolls he comes up with. I have no hesitation recommending Sushi King to coworkers and friends alike, and have come here for my past five birthday dinners with all six to eight people being completely blown away each time. The restaurant is always clean with a relaxed atmosphere, quiet lighting and an aroma only of the delicious food they put out. The entire family is professional and friendly, very becoming of the close-knit neighborhood. If you've never been there before, the "Hot Lover" and "Hot Crunch Crab" are great introductions to his work (the Hot Lover does have a little kick). **To all the "local guide" reviewers out there - Yes, it is a family run business.. Yes, the cost reflects the quality of the food especially when ordering entree rolls.. Yes, when they have 4-6 take out orders ahead of you may have to wait for your meal (there is only one chef working).. Be realistic, sushi is not a fast food dive.. The number of grown adults boo-hoo'ing because they have to wait 30-40 mins during peak times for a exquisite meal is ridiculous..** That being said, if you are looking for a sit down experience with some of the cleanest, freshest and truest flavors you'll ever get out of sushi then this is the place for you.
Amazing sushi and Japanese food! Today I had the Dream Roll and and my husband had the Kamakachi Roll. Great taste and presentation of both! Beef Negimaki appetizer was very tender. Literally, Dad, Mom, and Grandma running the place today. If speed is your thing, cut these folks some slack and go elsewhere. It is a very intimate, family restaurant and it shows in the quality!
Ordered takeout tonight. Staff was great and had a good chat with Daniel at the front counter while waiting for last minute touches on my food. First time here and definitely will be back. Prices were great and you get more than what you pay for. Portions were great and the sushi were full of big pieces of crab, salmon, and scallops. We got yaki soba noodles stir fried and the sauce was tasty and balanced. Fried calamari had a nice crunch and had a nice Chinese salt and pepper flavor which paired well with the chili sauce. Would definitely recommend this place for sushi and other foods! Can’t wait to eat in!
My favorite sushi place in this world by far! I really appreciate the quality of the fish as well as the way it is presented. They don't over-do the rice and the quantities are plentiful. I have been coming here for years since I started as a student at the U of R and whenever I am in town I always make my way back. My only suggestion is that if you are strapped for time call at least 30 mins in advance and order take-out. They are a single family establishment and service can slow down at times but I think it is well-worth the wait when you have the time.
Best sushi in Rochester NY hands down. We have never found anything to rival it and we all enjoy the food. The online orders usually take about 1.5 hours to fill, but everything is handmade to order so it is ok when you are getting quality!
Best sushi in Rochester, be prepared to wait but its worth it
Boyfriend and I decided to have a evening out and I hadn't found a place where I loved the sushi so we figured we would try this hole in the wall. It was sooooo good. Sometimes I need the "yum yum" or spicy mayo sauce to make sushi enjoyable at some places, but it was so good here I didn't need any! I tried the birthday roll and I can't wait for any excuse to have another night out. On top of that, our waitress was very polite and attentive. A great experience!
You might have to wait a bit to get your food but it’s ABSOLUTELY worth the wait! The sushi is super fresh and love their udon noodles. Definitely going to turn into a regular customer!!!
I had the Teriyaki Chicken earlier today and it was one of the most amazing this I had ever tried! The quality of the food was amazing. When I came to pick up my order the environment was very nice and relaxed and clean. The owners were very friendly people. Will be back in the near future and I would high recommend Sushi King to everyone!
It's a hole in the wall sushi place that has great sushi. It's in the burbs but really the sushi is good. The service is sometimes friendly but.. did I mention the sushi? Great for take out, there's like 3 4 tops and 6 2 tops but it's usually not busy. Family run - by that I mean their kids are there working. Really only of my favorite places in Penfield. Please don't go there and ruin it.
I don't have enough good things to say. The sushi was very fresh and delicious. The owners were friendly. Will definitely be back!
Cute little place with fantastic food and very friendly staff. All of the food that came out was delicious, even the menu items I tried that were outside my comfort zone. Be adventurous here and you won't be disappointed! Prices are very fair as well, especially given the quality of the food you're getting. Be warned, they can have some long wait times between dishes due to COVID and limited staffing, but they apologized for the wait time and did the best they could. All this to say, they were definitely worth the wait. I can't wait to return here in the future!
Great sushi. Food is fresh and excellent quality. Wide variety of items all exceptional. Come here almost once a week. Small family run business where they exceed in standing out from the crowd. Much better than the bigger establishments.
My favorite little sushi restaurant. You can't beat their prices, combos and quality of food. Waiting time can sometimes be a little long, but it's a little family place and you can see the husband and wife work hard to fill all the orders. Worth the wait.
Just tried this place for the first time after a friend's suggestion for local sushi. It's the absolute best sushi I've ever had. Very friendly staff as well. Def would recommend and will be coming back!
I second the person who said best sushi in Rochester hands down! I am consistently impressed with Sushi King any time I go. Their rolls are inventive, absolutely delicious, and well worth the price and wait time.
Lovely restaurant, delicious food. Can’t believe it took me this long to try it.
We ordered Valentine's Day sushi. It was really delicious. Because of the holiday, the price was a bit high, but it was worth the wait.
Sushi King is always an exceptional meal, and that comes with an exceptional wait time. They are, hands down, the best sushi in the area - and the business is run by a Husband and wife pair. Occasionally they are able to get help from younger relatives with waiting on tables, but it's in-between schoolwork, and there are still only the two handling the food. They rely on the income from sales to keep the place running, and do everything in their power to avoid losing those customers - sometimes that means waits end up longer than expected, but that isn't uncommon for the super small family-owned businesses in the area. Locals understand to expect to wait a prolonged period (1 hour+ for everything minimum, usually, as they're working takeout at the same time). If you plan accordingly, call early, and don't expect the food for 1.5 hours, then you're fine. Also be sure to see the menu in person, as the online menu is sometimes out of date. Sometimes there are small language barriers, but if you're patient there isn't generally an issue. This is a place you go to support a tiny local business, to get excellent sushi, and to take your time. It isn’t fast turnaround, and the quality doesn't suffer because it isn’t fast turnaround. If you need your sushi fast, look to chain establishments or Wegmans, but don't expect the quality to be nearly as good, or for the food to be super fresh and made to order. We've never had an issue with service, even if it does take a long time. They're very friendly, and they try to correct issues if and when they occur. High volume turnaround is difficult to manage without making mistakes, but they do their best. Take the opportunity to step back from the hustle and bustle and just exist, converse, etc for a bit. We ended up spending a lot per person, but also ended up with two meals each. It's still not inexpensive, but it is absolutely a fantastic treat once in a while - or maybe more frequently if you have the funds to spare. It's also more affordable if you don't go all out when you go. How you balance things is really up to you. And the food is so good that we forget to take pictures. Oops.
Sushi King is delicious and consistent! It looks like there’s one couple who run the place and are always busy. Their volcano roll is amazing!! I recommend going here for takeout, not dine-in since it’s a small sitting area.
This was our first visit to Sushi King in Penfield. We ordered the Dream and Golden Roll for pick up. It was very good. We will certainly be back. I am very glad that this Sushi Restaurant is in Penfield.
Words can't really describe how good this place is. I refuse to eat Sushi at any other location. I have still not found any place that's better let alone close to the quality of the food that Sushi King serves. Their service is a little slower because of the time it gakes to make their masterpieces. The service is not their strong point, but I assure u that the food highly makes up for it and is well worth the wait. Please disregard the service as they are totally family run and they do their best to serve you. Trust me, when u eat, it will be well worth it. Places like this should be protected at all cost and people should support this business at all cost. Been going there since 2012!
I’ve lived in NYC for 7 years and this is still the best sushi I’ve ever had. Everytime I come home it’s the first place I stop. Always fresh and worth the wait, the owners are very nice and accommodating. Kani salad is my favorite!
THE BEST SUSHI PLACE IN ROCHESTER. Been to Multiple other sushi restaurants and they dont match Sushi King. The sushi is not room temperature which I absolutely love it gives it a fresher cleaner taste. The portion sizes are great and the lunch specials are out of this world. The mochies and fried cheesecake are simply unforgettable. My favorite is the Gyozas.
Best sushi you will ever eat. Below is the Sushi King Lobster Roll and the sushi for 2 on the right. Absolutely delicious and a great selection of rolls and appetizers. The sushi was so fresh and carefully crafted. Great staff and friendly atmosphere an absolute must go if you like sushi or are interested in trying it for the first time.
Love thier Bento boxes for lunch! Just had to wait a few times after they said it would be ready (ready in 30mins showed up 45mins later and needed to wait) The sushi is super fresh and excellent though.
I've eaten here two times now, and neither experience was bad. The yaki soba was great. Every one at the table really enjoyed their sushi rolls.
Sushi was good! They were slammed with orders so wait time for walk in take out was long. Suggest calling ahead.
Service is a little slow at this small restaurant but the food is worth the wait.
Incredible. So far some of the best Sushi ever. A bit slow on the service, however great people.
I thought that the sushi was quite good, the family liked it too. My only issue was that we dined at the restaurant and the service was slow. If not for that would have been 5 stars. Will eat there again.
AMAZING sushi ... the women owner is sweet, however the man never speaks or even acknowledges a customer. The rest of the staff isn't very friendly either with slow service as well. Best of the best sushi though!
They would've got a five if the server had been more attentive. We were one of two tables. Should've been in and out and not had to wait for really anything at all. (Especially drinks on a super hot day; servers please be on top of that.) We still tipped appropriately, of course because the food was definitely delicious. And at least we cooled off from the heat, as they did have air conditioning. Not sure if we will go again though.
I meant to write a review earlier! Me and my family have been here a few times. The food is always great and the owners are very kind. My only complaint is how long the food (even appetizers and drinks) takes to receive.
Food was really good, owner was nice but it was verrrrry slow. The owners son was young and didn't get the correct order. I would go again but preorder to go.
Come here during a snow snowstorm. The place was opened and we received great service. They have delish sushi and great combo platter. Would come back
Sushi King is some of the best sushi in Rochester! I will say they are not very punctual. Order your food a good hour before you want to eat. We had an hour wait to pick up and I waited an additional half hour at the restaurant. Worth the wait but plan accordingly.
Food was good! They seem to do a lot of take out and looked to be 2 people in the front so service took a while with only 6 people there.
Very delicious sushi with fair prices! Service is just very slow, looks like it is a husband and wife running the entire place so food took about an hour to arrive
The food was great considering it is Rochester. The food took a bit of time to come out but it was still worth it! The prices are reasonable and the staff was friendly when they were around. The restaurant was dim even though the sun was out. Would definitely go again if I am in there area!
their sushi sashimi for 2 has a really competitive price (around 45) but sashimi portion is extreme small (a half or a third compared to what I get in bubble fusion or shema) sushi portion is somewhat smaller but in the acceptable range. Freshness is fine. Alaska roll is great. Another signature roll is fine.
My husband and I were regulars here when we lived in Penfield. The food was always pretty good but the issue is, they do not stay open on the hours advertised. Often we’d go and they were closed when supposed to be open or simply would not serve us because they were done serving lunch even though advertised as open. We now live further away and drove 20 min and when we walked in they said they stopped serving lunch ONE minute ago. Very discourteous- especially to customers who have been there 50+ times.
Meh it was actually 2.5 stars .the prices were good the sashimi and sushi were just okay. I would not purchase food here again. The ordering process was very friendly and helpful but the order process pick up 1 hr and overall palatable order was less than desirable. Save your time and money and go elsewhere.
The service was friendly and the space was clean. Ungodly, they ran out of rice right before I ordered, which meant I had to wait almost an hour for my sushi rolls. When the food did arrive it was good and reasonable priced.
Went right when it opened and it took about 20 minutes to get the two rolls I ordered lol. The food was great tasting just the wait was crazy. Also had a twelve year old serve me and spill my miso soup everywhere… kind of funny ngl.
ive been waiting for over an hour for my food, its worth the wait, the food is good, but with sitting for an hour we missed our next plans for my grandfathers birthday, i would not recommend dining in if youre in a rush
Sadly I can't recomend this place. The food is quite good but the service is extremely slow. We arrived on a Tuesday at 5:15. There was only 1 other couple who had already ordered. Nobody else there. We were greeted and ordered within 5 min. It took 30 minutes before we got soup and salad. Rolls arrived at about 45 minute mark and dinner at about 1 hour in. Could not imagine if it were actually busy. Maybe would have been there 3 hours!
This restaurant wasted my time. Had a CONFIRMED order online, went into the store to pick-up my order. They said they didn't receive it, so I showed them my phone with the e-mail confirmation. "Oh, we don't use that website anymore" is the response I got, along with a half-hearted "Sorry." NO COMPENSATION of any kind offered, had to sit and wait for my order to be made. Extremely disappointed. Sushi King should take the other menu down, since it's the FIRST website that comes up in a google search.
The food here is amazing, but every time I come (twice) the service is so slow. The server is not friendly and the time it takes from order to table is not reasonable .
The sushi was fair to poor, the lobster coconut soup was pretty unimpressive. There were a couple of pieces of perhaps crawfish or a very cheap version of lobster and some fake crab. There was a bucket of dirty water on the counter and the floor was so sticky. Windows were dirty and there was only one woman working with a young man who appeared to have just woke up and of no help to her. Hopefully she doesn't have to work like that everyday.
They've been open for a few years now so they're are no excuses for the terrible service. We've eaten here a dozen times now, but this will be the last time. While the food is decent the service is terrible. Waiting an hour for my food I finally mention it and it turns out they haven't even started it. Maybe if it was busy I could understand but it's dead. I expressed my feelings and all I got was a half hearted"sorry... do you still want us make it?" They should stop buy Hong Wahs down the street and see what great customer service is like.
Apparently Sushi King does not want sit down customers. We were the only sit down customers with two other customers at the counter ordering take out. The female server extended us a glare as she approached us and in a nasty tone, asked what we wanted to drink, left and never came back. After an uncomfortably long period of being ignored, we got up and left. Sushi Stink is what they are. We remember years ago when that same server was like 12 and waited on us... she was so pleasant then... too bad.
Ordered food for take out, was told it would be a 45 minute wait. That’s fine. Arrived and had to sit for another 45 minutes past the time they had told me. I could have taken a crash course on sushi and did it myself. The most annoying thing was they kept telling me “ we make we make”, obviously no one was making anything. Just tell me right away that it’s going to be a long wait. Don’t care how the food was at this point. The service was complete crap.
