I drive through Walnut Grove coming and going from my house to my mom’s in the Bay Area. I had noticed the “BBQ” sign a few times and decided to stop on my way home to grab dinner. I walked in and was greeted right away and directed to the menu board. I was confused at first because it only showed Mexican food items. Then, the person who greeted me said “oh, and we have BBQ”! Yes! That’s why I was there! Lol. I ordered a BBQ dinner AND and a Mexican dinner to go. The BBQ plate included ribs, mac & cheese, and beans. My husband said the sides were good and the ribs were okay. The next night my hub had the Mexican dinner (Pork Chicana, I think it was called). He said that was very good. Great flavor through the dish and the rice & beans. Overall, we’ll definitely stop in again!
Great meal. 👍🏻 Large portions! Highly recommend. ⭐️
Lots of homemade food here. Posole, salsa, chile verde scramble, so yummy! Service was great! Restrooms and entire restaurant very clean. 👍🏽
Tamales are awesome. There are actually chunks of pork, very well seasoned. The green pork are my favorite. My wife likes the rajas tamales. Will definitely come back
Totally unexpected to find this place on my daughter a and myself. Super friendly folks everyone greeted us all the way in. Attended our table quickly gave us some options barbecue ribs plate and barbecue chicken. The side dishes were off the hook and the meat was falling off the bone. A meal fit for a king just the right portions, can't wait to try breakfast there with my wife 😋.
A little more than I would like to spend on breakfast, but they were so kind and served my tots ( 3 and 6) on an enclosed safe patio where we were very safe and comfortable.
Stopped here in Walnut Grove to try to find something to eat after we discovered the restaurant we had been looking for in the area was closed. Wow! What a find! I'm a guy who eats cheeseburgers with only cheese, lettuce, and tomato and no other condiments or additions like onion that can mask the flavor of lower quality meat. I've had plenty of plain cheeseburgers so I know a good burger when I taste it. Fat Lou's has a great burger! It was cooked to perfection and honestly it tasted like a good steak. Moist, melt-in-your-mouth, not greasy, and a soft and fresh bun. I dined with my brother who said that his Mexican selection was delicious as well. I highly recommend stopping at Fat Lou's if you can.
Lou and his staff were amazing. They took every opportunity to ensure we had the best meal experience possible. The experience was only exceeded by the food itself. Must recommend to anyone driving thru town. Take the time to stop and enjoy.
Outstanding food. The owner, Lou, took pride in his cooking and you could taste it. We had breakfast. The tortillas and chile relleno were the BEST! My eggs and bacon were prepared perfectly. Looking forward to going back!
Fat Lou's food is authentic and extraordinary. You can taste the loving the food with every bite. He sells the sauces on the side in there I must buy. His enthusiasm for what he is doing just shines on the plate. It felt like a privilege to be allowed to taste his food. If you are in Walnut Grove you definitely have to drop by and taste.
Always stopped into this location on my Motorcycle well before it became Fat Lou’s as it’s right on The Beautiful Delta Hwy 160 and has ample parking around it. Now Big Lou’s is even better than ever. I stopped last Friday morning and had The Chorizo and Egg Scramble with Potatoes and Corn Tortillas. Real Good!!! Came right off the Grill as The Cook herself brought my Food. It was so good on my way back Sunday from a Motorcycle Campout my GPS in my head had another great Breakfast on my mind. This time I had the Chilaquiles and Chili Verde on top of scrambled eggs. So Good. Crispy and well seasoned Chili Verde made the route choice worth it. My suggestion would be to go for the Mexican Breakfast options. This Cook shines on That!!!
This place is perfect for eating. The food is very good, the prices are fair, and the portion sizes are generous. What really makes it stand out is the excellent service. The place is also very clean, and the food makes you feel at home. I recommend it — it’s now one of my favorite restaurants.
Best Mexican cuisine in the Sacramento Delta, Lou personally let us try his homemade salsa, maybe some homemade chelada beer, and was all around a great host, surprisingly it was my first time there as I've lived here all my life and Lou has been around for a few years now, we had breakfast and I had the steak rancheros with an egg it was amazing!
Delicious food served by incredibly nice people at very fair prices. Do yourself a favor and stop by.
Good homemade food. Has the meat lover's scramble. Delicious.
Amazing food, fantastic staff. I had the Chile verde. The best I have ever had. The owner Lou told me it is his abuelita's recipe. All of the staff are very friendly. He makes his own hot sauce as well (which he let me sample all 3 flavors). Great relaxed atmosphere. A true "mom-n-pop" business. Fresh and delicious food!
I love this place! Great little diner in the heart of Walnut Grove. Tasty home cooked food and great coffee. You can get homestyle American and/or Mexican breakfast. The beans are killer! The service was great too. It was a very friendly atmosphere. Definitely make this a stop if you are in the area.
Best Chile Verde ever!!!!! My son only eats his chile verde. Not only is the chile verde good but their bbq on Saturday and sundays is phenomenal. It is also very clean on the insode
We finally made it out to Fat Lou’s Café in Walnut Grove—and man, what an awesome surprise! We rolled in just expecting a chill bite to eat, but left talking about it the whole ride home. We started off with the steak fajitas and the super burger. Now when I say perfectly cooked, I mean nailed it. The burger was juicy and packed with flavor, but the fajitas were the real show-stealer. That steak was insanely tender and juicy—like, melt-in-your-mouth level. You could taste the grill on it, in the best way possible. Here’s the cool part: while we were eating, someone (we’re pretty sure it was the owner, Lou himself) was outside casually grilling meat like it was a backyard hangout. Then out of nowhere, he strolls back in and hands out samples of his charcoal-grilled pork ribs. I kid you not—those ribs were ridiculous. Smoky, juicy, with this beautiful char, and when dipped in their house chili and spicy vinegar sauce? Game over. We seriously would’ve bought a rack to go if we could. The whole place just has this cool, down-to-earth vibe. It’s not trying to be fancy—it doesn’t have to be. It feels like one of those spots you randomly find, fall in love with, and then tell everyone about. Staff was super friendly, other customers were laughing and talking like they’d known each other forever, and the outdoor grilling gave it that backyard family cookout feel. Fat Lou’s isn’t just a place to eat—it’s a place to hang, taste, and smile your face off. Highly recommend making the trip. We’ll definitely be back—with more friends in tow.
We had the pleasure of eating an amazing meal at this place! Lou was filled with so much joy as he described all of the food he made. Everything was delicious!
Friendly service and delicious breakfast! Hubs had scrambled eggs with green chili sauce and beans. I had The Weekender with eggs, sausage, bacon, and pancakes. Highly, highly recommend!
Great place to drop in while cruising around the delta in Walnut Grove. Authentic Mexican food and vegetarian options. June made us feel like family. Check this place out!
We had the Chile Verde and Chilaquiles. The Chilaquiles were good. The Chile Verde was even better! I loved it! I would definitely order it again. We got in during a slow time (passed by earlier and it was packed!) and got in right away. It's a small place across from the river. The two ladies were very friendly and the place was very clean.
Chilaquiles and crispy potatoes were great way to start the day. Sweet place lovely people. Was going to post a recipe photo of my food but ate it before I had a chance,

My wife and I were just driving around, sightseeing, and came across Walnut Grove. Beautiful place. Friendly people. Stop in at Fat Lou’s Cafe. Order to go some Tamales and also bought a jar of Salsa (in a mason jar). My wife and I ate it 2 days later. It was the most delicious meal ever!!! Definitely going back for more. Thanks, Fat Lou’s Cafe!!!
My boyfriend and I were looking for food nearby after visiting the Cosumnes River Preserve. Fat Lou’s had great reviews and I am so glad we stopped by. I had the bacon cheeseburger with their homemade French fries. So so good - produce was fresh and the tomatoes on my burger were perfectly ripe. This is now on my list of top 5 burgers in the greater Sac area. My boyfriend got the carnitas which were also delicious. Everything tasted fresh and homemade. You can tell that they take a lot of pride in their food. Service was excellent too. We will be back to try some of their tamales.
Lou and June made our trip to California complete! We were driving through, hungry from a long morning of travel and took us in as if we were members of their own family! I can't even begin to tell you how amazing the food is! The Mexican Flag is a must eat dish and the tamales are some of the best we've ever eaten! If I lived in this area we would be here at least once a week! Beyond the amazing food I can't thank Lou and June enough for their hospitality and for giving us such a great experience! Thank you!!!!
The chorizo breakfast burrito was excellent! The chorizo was really good quality. I didn’t have the red grease dripping out like other burritos I have had. The lady at the counter was so nice. Talked about the local area and made me want to explore the towns before I left. The restaurant was spotless. Recommend!
In the ten years I have lived in California, I have eaten at several dozen places that served Mexican or Mexican inspired food. This was the best I have had. The refried beans are made from scratch, not from a can. Same with the tamales. I cannot decide which is the better sauce: the rojo or the verde. The Charizo and eggs were shockingly good. The chorizo was not drowning in grease. Portions were appropriate. Overall it was a tad on the high side re price, but given that everything is made from scratch, I am ok paying a couple dollars more. Seriously, if you are near, definitely eat hear.
Pit Stop there on our way to a hanukkah party. Clean bathroom and super nice owner, fat Lou. 😆 we decided to buy a dozen chicken tamales and brought them to our party. They were Delicious....wrapped up in foil nice and hot...also in a special box, Staying warm while we got them to the party.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Fat Lou’s Cafe is absolutely incredible! Everything was just perfect — from the food to the service and the atmosphere. I honestly can’t even find the right words to explain how amazing the experience was. Everything tasted so fresh and full of flavor, and the staff were so friendly and welcoming. I truly can’t imagine a better place. Highly recommended to everyone!
Driving back to SF after paying a visit to a vendor in Sacramento, maps detoured us through Walnut Grove and we pulled in for some lunch. Best random lunch stop ever. Food was amazing and June was really nice. The salsa on the table was some of the best I’ve ever had! June even put some in a jar so we could take some home with us!
Authentic Mexican food! The verde sauce is AMAZING!!! As was the rest of my plate I had the Mexican flag plate. It was a HEALTHY portion❤️ I took left overs home. It was a great meal. My husband had the chorizo breakfast plate and asked for extra veggies (bell pepper and onion) and they accommodated his request without hesitation and loved every bite! We also had fresh guacamole, salsa and nopales. The staff was very friendly, everyone stopped by or table or in passing asking if we needed anything. They were definitely attentive and it didn’t matter what waitress was serving our table. You can tell collectively they love their job and treat their customers (and employees) like family. I saw Joe in the kitchen high fiving and having moments here and there with his staff. There were positive and healthy vibes. I look forward to eating here again❤️
Ate here with my husband and my best friend on May 10th. We had planned on eating somewhere in Locke, but every place was either super busy or closed early. So we stumbled on this place on our way out of town and it was meant to be and lucky us. The owner was cooking up some BBQ out front so that's what we ordered and it was DELICIOUS 😋 The restaurant was clean, well decorated, nice bathrooms and great location with views of the canal from the front outdoor seating. The best part of our meal was the service. The owners naturally feel like friends you haven't seen in a while and are just catching up. Very comfortable to be in their presence and they take care of you. Would definitely return and highly recommend them if you're hanging out in this area!

Food is fresh and wholesome....but the price to quantity ratio is absurd. I paid over $50 for two plates of food that would hardly fill up a 5 year old. Again, it was flavorful....but you DEFINITELY leave hungry. DONT GO HERE IF YOURE EVEN REMOTELY HUNGRY.
Mexican style cafe. Ordered Fat Lou Super Burger. Good burger 🍔 Great steak fries 🍟. Would most definitely stop by on my next trip BUT It's a little pricey Majority of dishes are priced above $20. I would say expect to pay $30 per person.
Great place, great staff, relaxed atmosphere. Good food. Lovely garden outside in the back. Harvest is used for their food. Very fresh But Pricey. I don't think I've ever spent $20+ for a burrito. 🥴 Especially from a very small "out-of-the-way" restaurant that we just happened to come across on a Sunday drive. But again, the owner Lou and his family made us feel right at home. We really enjoyed our time there. We'll go again. 😁We just won't order a burrito. 😂

Food is pretty expensive which is expected for a rural area but the quality doesn’t match…20.00 for chicken sandwich and it looks like it was beat up first before I came to pick it up. I did expect something different especially since it came from a diner.
Was expecting authentic Mexican food but far from what we got. Ranchera had zucchini (??) and lacked taste and spices. Service is good—hopefully the burgers are better. Pricey
Horrible customer service. I’m surprised how this place has positive reviews. For the first time I stopped by this cafe to order a coffee with chips and salsa. The wait was over 20 minutes and the manager told me that he can give me a side of Guacamole also. (I didn’t ask for Guacamole) When he gave my total $21, I told him that I am being overcharged and asked what he charged me for. The side of chips and salsa was $8 on the menu and he tried charging me $21 just for the chips and salsa. I asked if they charge for Guacamole and if so how much. He responded saying “yes it’s a restaurant” like DUH I am just asking why I am being overcharged. He tried selling me a small side of guacamole for $12 RIDICULOUS… He was very rude and unprofessional in the workplace. He then proceeded to complain that an avocado was wasted to make this guacamole, dude that is not my problem. You should confirm with the customers that you charge $12 for a small side of guacamole before making it and whining to the customer. He tried to overcharge me and keep in mind that I never asked for guacamole to begin with, he offered to make me a side and know I know why 🙄 I will never step foot into this cafe again!!! I normally don’t write bad reviews by the way, this is the first time I am writing a bad review. AVOID THIS PLACE THEY ARE A RIP OFF.
The only problem I have is how do you justify charging 38 something for one breakfast burrito and a cup of coffee? My wife and I shared.
