The only place we consistently go in Pullman is Birch & Barley. And that’s saying something, because this town hands out five-star reviews like participation trophies. Most restaurants deserve three stars at best, because most Americans don’t really know what they’re eating anymore. It all tastes the same for a reason, it’s coming off the same SYSCO truck. Think about it. Have you ever had a fried cheese stick that truly blew your mind? Of course not. They’re engineered to be identical, shelf-stable, and forgettable. That’s the goal. Birch & Barley feels like the exception. I don’t know how much, if anything, they pull off a food-service truck, but whatever they’re doing, it doesn’t eat like it. The food is consistently good, and more importantly, it tastes intentional. What really sets them apart is the Cajun side of the menu. The “Rajun Cajun” pasta is a perfect example. It’s seasoned, not hot, more restrained, almost French in approach, not the heavy, gloppy, over-rich mess you usually get when pasta is mass-produced. Gumbo, étouffée shrimp/crawfish, and other are the dishes that push Birch & Barley over the top, not just in Pullman but in the entire Inland Northwest. Honestly, where else around here can you even find multiple Cajun dishes done right? Add to that consistently good service and a staff that actually greets you when you walk in the door, and you’ve got a place that earns its reputation rather than buying it in bulk. Birch & Barley isn’t just another five-star food rating it’s one of the few that actually deserves the rating.
My friend and I came here to have a nice evening chatting meal and we were so delighted by your Server Mia. She was so lovely and had so much knowledge about your menu (my friend had some food restrictions). She was so thoughtful and sweet and we just wanted to highlight her for her great attitude, kindness, knowledge, and overall thoughtfulness! Shes a rock star, I hope you guys cherish her!
One of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. My Old Fashioned was spectacular and the Bayou Catfish was out of this world! The mussels appetizer was also top tier. Highly recommend this place.
We had an amazing lunch today! The menu was fun to look through and the different flavor options were great. Our party had a steak sandwich, a couple hamburgers, and the fried chicken sandwich and it was all delicious!! Our server, Taylor, was very patient and friendly. She provided excellent service, checking in frequently and refilling drinks before we even had to ask. We will definitely be back!
The short ribs here are absolutely divine!! 10/10 Best thing in the menu Super tender and fall of the bone Also strongly recommend getting the pretzels here 10/10 Super soft and delicious starter! The hummus and bread was mediocre 3/10 Poutine 9/10… can use more gravy The cocktails here are delicious as well but are extremely light Strongly recommend the espresso martini or seasonal pumpkin martini The blackberry martini mocktail is delicious as well! (Can be made strawberry as well) The etuffee is a 5/10 Nothing really special and a bit too salty It is spicy for people that like that Comes with rice and side of bread The lobster Mac and cheese is recommended by many people but felt overrated 6/10 But the cougar Mac & cheese is what’s good
The food was phenomenal, catfish Po-boy in the PNW? Yep, spicy and delectable, Cougar Gold Lobster Mac, seriously so delicious. Soup of the day, tortilla was one of the best I've had! Winter 75 cocktail fun, fancy and good. Pretty place anticipate some stairs but some seating main floor. Good parking. Waiter was very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. Strongly recommend!
Ordered a blue cheese steak tonight Would have been better if toppings were t solid objects but hot melted goo. 2nd worst steak I've had. We have visited for years and always good
We had Deb’s wings, ribeye and lobster mac and cheese. The wings were excellent, really nice quality and tasty. The steaks were okay, they tasted great but were a little in the tough side. The two people that had the mac and cheese loved it. Everyone raves about the Bloody Marys, need to try those next time! The wait staff was very friendly and attentive too.
This restaurant has a nice atmosphere and nice servers. The cocktails were excellent. My wife had the Grapefruit Mule and it was a fun take on the classic Moscow Mule. She also had the Shrimp and Asparagus Pasta and really liked it. I had the Sirloin Steak Combo with roasted potatoes and the seasonal vegetables. I ordered the steak medium rare and stressed closer to rare than medium. However, the steak was served medium. I wasn't too happy about it, but a 6 oz steak is a pretty small portion and I don't send things back, ever. I would have expected the seasonal vegetables to be fresh, however they were green beans and seemed to be from frozen as the texture and flavor were off. Finally, and this is really my fault for not reading closely... but I ordered a side of their Cougar Gold Mac and Cheese for $8. I was expecting it to be a smaller portion of their Cougar Lobster Mac, though it didn't specifically say Lobster, as I didn't see it listed as just mac and cheese elsewhere on the menu.... I assumed at the price point it would have been the lobster. It was very good, but was just a little disappointed. Overall, I do recommend this as a nice date night place.
Good ribeye and new York steak 😋 we like fish and fry too. Service was good. We visited several times during WOW week of WSU and enjoyed Coug burgers 🍔, birch wings, and pork chops. Very organized staffs to keep restaurant operations efficient. Bravo. Reservations recommended during WOW week and school events.
We stopped by for lunch as a group of 5, we had to wait a little bit, but not longer than 10 minutes. Spacious and calm atmosphere, we had crab cakes and reuben sandwich. They have a remarkably large selection of alcoholic beverages, and even wine from the tap. We went with 2 mules which is a great choice on such a hot day in Pullman
This place really does deliver one of the more consistent experiences dining in the area. An American comfort-bistro (?) menu -- which they only ever give you a QR code for, so you have to bring your phone to dinner :/ -- and a spacious, handsome space indoor and out, with both a dining area and a bar area. The food is tasty, great pretzel appetizer + fries; however I will say it feels like everything could be cooked a little longer ... ? The burger was quite rare. Our artichoke dip arrived pretty lukewarm ... as did the french dip. Definitely tasted good, it's just one of those details that makes a big difference in perception. Very pet friendly patio = good dog watching :)
We had steak bites and they was over cooked. They was dryed out and tough. The steak should had een moist but it was not. It was something you would get in a tru k stop. We let the server know she said she would make them aware of the poorly cook dinner. It seem like they could care less. I had the pork chop and it was ok but still over cooked. But had a good flavor.
