From the music to the amazing food, Ay guey is an amazing place to stop by! Artemio’s service is top notch and all his cocktails are delicious. My favorite cocktail here is the Paloma and the fish tacos You must visit!
¡AY GÜEY! Is a spectacularly under-heralded Mexican restaurant on the Astoria/Woodside border that is eminently worth traveling for. We’ve now had at least 6 wonderful meals there and it’s motivated us to take the long walk in winter past MANY excellent restaurants in Astoria to enjoy their delicious food and drinks. So many mediocre Mexican restaurants in western Queens now, including some attracting Michelin attention and long lines. ¡AY GÜEY! Is a jewel that is ready to be discovered. Lovely spot, comfortable with good but not overloud music, and warm hospitality. We seem to be becoming regulars there, even with all of the other great options in our neighborhood,
Thanks for a lovely evening! Fish tacos and guac were excellent. My friend got the veggie enchilladas - yummy and a very generous portion. We will be back for sure.
Sangria Bliss and Taco Heaven! This Mexican spot is a flavor paradise! The sangrias are simply divine – a perfect blend of fruity sweetness that complements the zesty atmosphere. But let's talk about the taco birrias – pure perfection! Tender, flavorful meat wrapped in handmade tortillas; each bite was a taste of taco heaven. If you're on the hunt for a place with awesome sangrias and taco birrias, this is it!
Excellent food and cocktails! A great addition to our neighborhood. The staff is super friendly and makes you feel extremely welcome. Highly recommend. ❤️
Great food and cocktails! Love the chorizo guacamole, the grilled octopus is among the best I've ever had, friendly people, already looking forward to my next visit
Really cute restaurant. The food was delicious. I got the Baja Tacos, my kids got the Birria tacos and husband got the enchiladas. Definitely coming back.
This is a hidden gem! Best Mexican food I've had in a while. The tacos Al pastor and enchiladas were so tasty!
This place is excellent. Among the places in the area, this one is a top choice for a good meal. The food is quality, well prepared, and nicely presented. If you’re considering it, just come eat here. You won’t be disappointed.
Wow, just amazing authentic Mexican food, incredible flavors. Great cocktails. Highly recommend!
Excellent service good food the place is super warm I would recommend it 100% and the margaritas the best
Its amazing to see a neighborhood spot turn into a destination. There will be a day when everyone else finds out about this place...and i will be so happy to see this spot blow up as a total hot spot. Great food, great drinks, great time, everytime...
I almost didn’t believe the full 5 star rating, but the food deserved it! We had the fish tacos and the chicken mole picaditas (tacos with a thicker corn tortilla) and both were full of flavor and well balanced. The atmosphere was homey and chill and the service was friendly. We really enjoyed the berry berry good cocktail which was a little sweet but tasty. A great find in the neighborhood and we’ll definitely be back!
Amazing restaurant and the owner is always a joy to speak to. He remembers me every time I walk in.
In a city that lacks stellar Mexican food, this is a great gem. The chips and salsa.. yes, the chips and salsa were wonderful. You have a selection of sauces. They are all packed with complex flavor. Hidden and unassuming for sure but very good.
Such a wonderful restaurant. Amazing quality and service. Drinks are done with top shelf alcohol and great ingredients even during bunch special. I would highly recommend this place if you’re looking for delicious authentic but most importantly great quality food. You can tell they don’t cut corners with ingredients. Give them a visit you will not regret it!
I Just walked in off the street to give the restaurant a try. Ordered the short rib nachos and got a Paloma cocktail while I waited for the food. The cocktail was incredible made with fresh juice and quality spirits served by charming bartender with real experience. The huge order of short rib nachos i devoured at home. Made with Fresh tortilla chips tender short rib, it was the combo I never knew I needed. Looking forward to trying brunch on the weekend. Must come again
Artimeo gives his all! So enjoyable.
Amazing food and service! Probably the best Mexican food we've had in all of NYC. The chilaquiles and sopa azteca were amazing - quality and flavor equals that of the food in Mexico. The cocktails were amazing and strong as well. Highly recommend and we will be back to try more off the menu!
We were staying nearby and travelling in and out to Manhattan and eating there. We came out early one evening and decided to eat locally. We were amazed at the contrast in price. The food was excellent and the manager was very helpful. It was definitely our best experience of a restaurant in New York. We highly recommend this restaurant.
I had an amazing experience in this restaurant today, I regret not taking pictures to post it. Me and my friends went there for dinner, the place is very well decorated and brings a nice atmosphere, perfect for dinner with friends and/or date night, my friend had a chellada, it was delicious, so original! The food was outstanding , the queso fundido with chorizo was really really good, the tacos were perfect and the "carne assada" with potatoes and guacamole was 10 stars, five is not enough! But for me, the service was the the highest point of the night, great great service, I asked to take my leftovers home and they gave me extra guacamole to bring, so thoughtful. I will be coming back soon. They told me they will start brunch soon and I am looking forward to it!
The food is absolutely delicious! The cocktails are out of this world! The service is excellent. I invited my friends for a Sunday Brunch and they were astonished!!!!! Now they come during the week as well!
Small authentic fiod mexican. Met the owner, great guy had Cochinita Pibil tacos, and my friend had Huevos Rabcheros. His Sangria looked great. Recommend highly..
My family and I love the food and the cocktails are also good. They use quality ingredients - the fish tacos, my favorite, are made with mahi mahi. They serve brunch and the huevos ranchers are very yummy too. The staff is thoughtful and friendly too!
Love Ay Guey the food is delicious and the authentic cocktails. The service is superb you feel right at home.
Came here for the first time 9/2 and as of today have been back 5 times!!!! Incredible food, so flavorful and balanced-- nothing overpowers the senses and it's just food that is a joy to eat. The service is impeccable and Artemio is amazing at what he does. 10/10 recommend.
Used to live in Chicago where amazing Mexican food is abundant and was shocked to find so many subpar restaurants here. This place brought back my faith. Great quality food made by the sweetest staff.
Everything our entire table of 10 tried was amazing. The drinks were phenomenal, the food was delicious, we couldn't stop raving about it. This is my first and only google review, that's how good of a place it is.
Hopped in for lunch and was blown away with the quality of food and drinks. The margaritas were quality and great flavor for a good price, the mahi mahi was real and flavorful, the chicken was marinated and delicious. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and wonderful!
Artemio is the ultimate host. You feel like family here and the food is sooooo good. I’d add more Os to that ‘so’ but I don’t want to be obnoxious. His margaritas are also amazing. Such good quality all around. And super family-friendly.
10/10 AMAZING!! First time eating here and the food was sooooo fresh and delicious you could tell they put a lot of love in their cooking! The owner (I didn’t get his name) is so friendly and is really passionate about what he does. I will definitely be coming back!!
The tacos were SO GOOD AND JUICY. I got the chicken tacos, normally in other Mexican restaurants it's bland and missing flavor to it that you just add hot sauce on it hoping it'll taste better. But this place. Amazingggg seasoning. Combine it with some papa's fritas or arroz and some habichuelas. Chef kiss 👨🍳 Got a regular soda too and it was so nicely presented.
Wow. If you are like me and were wondering if all these 5 star reviews were sponsored or somehow promotional, I can assure you as a layperson who just walked in, they’re 100% warranted and real. I had a dynamite experience from my Padre Viejo cocktail (a mezcal take on a mix between an old fashioned, a Negroni, and a Manhattan 🤤) to the birria quesadilla. The experience from top to bottom was heavenly and I enjoyed lovely outdoor seating under the sky. Neighbors, let’s support this place to the moon!!
Run, don’t walk to this astounding hidden gem of a Mexican restaurant tucked into a quiet street on the Astoria/Woodside border. It’s almost impossible to find decent Mexican food in NYC. This place blows the roof off when it comes to flavor and quality! You must get the chips and guacamole to start. Fresh made chips and the most delicious salsa and fresh guacamole I’ve ever had bar none. Don’t miss the short rib enchiladas! The fresh, hot churros! OMG! Actually, there’s not a miss on the entire menu. Make the trip if you’re not local! This place is a stand out in deliciousness and excellence! Stop in and experience this place! You will be glad you did!
This place needs more love! Way too underrated! The food is always phenomenal and the cocktails perfectly balanced every time. The level of detail the bartenders go into from the home made infusions, complex cocktails, and level of knowledge of all spirits- it’s truly a gift around home coming here.
Such delicious food and drinks kind and honest service. Artemio gave us personalized attention and went out of his way to make our experience great. We had brunch with the Paloma and margarita (which came with premium tequila) and the huevos rancheros, as well as fish tacos. All were delicious and we can’t wait to return!
A delightful experience at this cantina! The tacos corn tortillas exuded an authentic aroma not found in store-bought tortillas, complemented by a birria consommé that was both thick and tasty. The flan, impressively thick and flavorful capped of this dinner perfectly. The drinks, especially the margaritas with fresh lime juice, added an extra layer of deliciousness. The attention to quality ingredients truly made a difference. A must-try for those seeking genuine flavors, a cozy atmosphere, and delicious drinks.
This place was amazing!! The food, staff and everything was fantastic! They are all so nice and the owner came out and spoke to us about the restaurant and how it’s doing. I can’t stress it enough how amazing this place is and I would HIGHLY recommend.
Personally I am quite picky with my food but their chicken quesadilla?!? OUT OF THIS WORLD it’s extremely filling like I was stuffed very quickly . I also tried their tacos and very good no lie ( I couldn’t take any pictures because I eat it but it was really good) chicken nachos are really good as well and extremely well packed their guacamole is very tasty I would definitely recommen this place if you are ever looking for something delicious to eat.
I love this restaurant very much recommend agua chile verde tacos de birria and enchiladas you will really like their Mexican cuisine and the people who work there are very nice and welcoming to all people and speak English just I. Vase you don’t speak Spanish.🇲🇽🇬🇹❤️
This is genuinely one of the best spots in the neighborhood! It deserves more recognition. I’ve brought many friends and family over the years since they first opened and not a single time have they disappointed. The food is absolutely delicious and authentic. The drinks are well done. The space has some fantastic wall art and decor. The owner, Artemio, is always so genuinely warm and welcoming to his patrons which makes your experience memorable. He’s very accommodating when ordering certain dishes. It’s unfortunate that particular block doesn’t get the best foot traffic, but I hope more people give his restaurant a chance. You’ll leave feeling full and satisfied knowing you’re supporting someone who does his best to give back to his community as well.
The food quality matched the service quality perfectly. The team is friendly and knows exactly what food to recommend. The chef creates original options where flavors truly shine. This spot exceeds in food and service. I recommend stopping in at this restaurant.
Surprised to find this little spot on the edge of a couple of neighborhoods. I’d never heard of it. Now that you have, you should go. The guacamole w chorizo with chips was incredible and the fish taco were delicious. Cant wait to return to try one of the cocktails and the rest of the menu. Bonus is we get to support our local small businesses so that we have a thriving community.
My favorite place to get authentic Mexican cuisine. The enchiladas de mole is my favorite!
Excellent ceviche and guacamole. Also, the service was fantastic. I would highly recommend.
My friend brought me to this restaurant, and I have no regrets. The food was AMAZING! I had the chicken nachos, and even though my belly was fully, I couldn't stop eating. The homemade chips were so tasty. Let's not talk about the passion fruit margarita. Talk about a drink that.hits the spot. I'll definitely be returning!
So consistent. So delicious. Love the guac with or without chorizo and the short rib enchiladas are heavenly!!
Super Recommend! Every time we go the owner is there and personally makes our drinks which are DELICIOUS! Their food is also some of the best Mexican I’ve had and I love that they don’t skimp out on the spice🌶️😁 we drive in from out east Long Island and absolutely adore this spot!
All those who proclaim: "I'm from close to the border and won't eat Mexican in New York" haven't been here. The owner is a true mixologist who makes the most well balanced drinks with the best Mexican spirits, fresh juices, chilis & syrups, I'm really addicted to the made-to-order sangrias. The food...fogetaboutit, don't get me started, it's the best Mexican food in this entire area! Same situation with the kitchen as the bar...the best ingredients prepared the best way for the best results. It's just the simple balancing of all the flavors & textures to achieve the best results... culinary harmony. #hiddengem 😍 🇲🇽
Great new addition to the area! My husband and I for months have been saying we wished for a cocktail bar nearby. Low and behold, we finally have one! The drinks are what brought us here, the food is an amazing bonus. The birria is so tasty, and their elote is the best I've ever had. We also tried the fish tacos which did not disappoint. This place has already turned into our new favorite spot. I highly recommend coming here. You will not be disappointed!
This is a small cozy restaurant and bar with spectacular service ! The cocktails here are so delicious and well balanced! They have so many food selections and everything tastes like your grandma made it herself! So so good! Me and my friends tried all the drinks on the menu and wow they are all so spectacular! I especially loved the Berry Berry Good cocktail it was absolutely perfect! Artemio the bartender was super helpful and just the most charming funniest guy ever! This is definitely the kind of secret neighborhood gem that you bring all your friends too! I definitely see myself coming back again and again! Just marvelous!
Artemio is a master of his craft. The chef is incredible; the food is consistently delicious and the drinks are amazing. The chicken and short rib enchiladas, shrimp tacos, quesadillas and elote are our go to’s but we’ve tried just about everything on the menu and nothing disappoints. The margaritas are easily the best in Astoria/Woodside. Highly recommend, you will not be disappointed!
I was with my wife and we had a great experience together, We had sangrias, palomas, octupus, seafood tower, seafood soup, al the food was amazing, great place, Artemio has a great, we definitely coming back
Aye Guey easily became a favorite spot for me and my girl. Met the owner a few times and I must say he’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met - very humble and friendly guy. The food is great, their signature drinks are delicious and the atmosphere is so warm and inviting. If you ever catch yourself out there in Woodside, definitely give this place a try. And fyi, the tres leches cake is one of the BEST I ever had! Wishing the owner, Artemis, and his business absolute success!
This restaurant has the the happy hour, Sandra is here every day and she will. Take care of you as she did with me. Her service is immaculate and VIP her recommendation for happy hour is great, she has margaritas, beer sangrias, holly Palomas.... Delicioso!! You must stop by.
If you're looking for authentic Mexican food "Ay Güey NYC" is the best place where you have have a delicious experience. The happy hour has great selections, sangrias, margaritas all flavors you name it, the holly Palomas yummy. Say no more, you should visit this restaurant.
This place is a hidden gem. I think it’s the best Mexican restaurant in Astoria. Try their signature cocktails. Really unique and tasty. The enchiladas mole is phenomenal and their Maduros are superb. Go for the tres leches for dessert.
This is our go-to spot since 2022. The staff treat you well, excellent service, the menu is amazing (makes you want to order 1 of everything), the food is authentic and flavorful (after you eat here you’ll crave the dishes from here especially their tacos lol) the drinks are always solid 10/10, and the overall ambience is so chill. Easy to fall in love with this neighborhood gem. Seafood soup is by far the best I’ve had, like ever. Don’t walk, run here!
Quite honestly, I was very impressed by this hidden gem. Although I did not get to try their tacos yet, as my friend and I we're so full from just the guacamole and grilled octopus, which were superb!! The prices were really reasonable in comparison to many restaurants. Their taco Tuesday specials are actually on Mondays, which was a bummer for us, but they still have some pretty good happy hour deals. The guacamole was really delicious, and the servings were never-ending. The grilled octopus was perfectly cooked with a really nice flavor, accompanied by really tasty potatoes and mushrooms. I was very surprised as usually there are no sides with these types of plates. As far as the drinks go, holy molly!! Delicious. I tried about 5 😅... collectably. Margarita Only Guey ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Great passion fruit, Marg! They have different choices. The Sun-Dia ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A little sweet, and yes, you tasted mostly watermelon - I'm not that big on sweet drinks, but it was nice and refreshing. Woodside Mar-Tea-Ni ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Nice drink, I tasted a hint of smokiness. Pecan ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ May sneak up on you! Delicious drink. However, I wouldn't recommend if you're lactose intolerant lol... the cream takes half of the drink. ¡Ay Guey! Smash ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Very delicious and refreshing drink The bar tender/waitress/hostes/server Thalia was amazing!!! She prepared all the drinks fast and delicious! I was impressed with how she was able to handle all these tasks alone. Surprised she wasn't cooking also, but compliments to the chef! Lastly, I have to say that these are the best churros I have ever had in a Mexican restaurant!! The caramel was creamy, not like the typical ones that are nothing but sugar. The churro itself was warm and delicious. I shall be back!!!
Wow! This place is phenomenal. Food is so good from the drinks to apps to entree. Staff is so friendly. It’s great to see authentic food and not generic tasting/plain Mexican food for a change!
I love this place! Our group of 5 (and our chihuahua) sat outside and had a superb meal and delicious drinks. Enchilada Mole, Salmon Tropical, a big plate of chorizo nachos as an appetizer…Everything was SO good! The friendly owners chatted with us and made us feel very welcome. Prices are reasonable and the neighborhood is quiet and easy going- a real refuge from the hustle and bustle. I highly recommend this hidden gem restaurant. And It’s close to Vaughn College and LGA.
To start the service was amazing, we were greeted immediately and asked if we wanted to try to guacamole and chips, we had the spicy one which was very fresh. We ordered the tamarind and strawberry margaritas which were very fresh and not too sweet. We placed an order of yuca fries which had a great sauce with them, seemed to be a ketchup base with mayo and spices. Main course we did el pastor tacos and the Barria. Great meal and a great price highly recommend
This place has by far the best Mexican food I have ever tasted. This was my first time coming with my partner and we were blown away with the colorful decor and the amazing flavorful foods. We got the shrimp nachos and elotes for our appetizers and it was just bursting with so much flavor. I ordered the chicken nachos and my partner ordered the enchiladas and they were amazing!!!!! The owner was super friendly to talk to and very polite. We're definitely coming back!
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (10/10) Ay Guey Cantina and Cocina is a gem! From the moment I walked in, I knew I was in for a treat. The atmosphere is vibrant, and everything—from the decor to the service—was top-notch. Drinks: The cocktails are absolutely delicious. The margaritas, pecan beverage, and Padre Viejo were standout favorites. Each drink was crafted to perfection, balancing flavors beautifully. Food: The food is simply delectable. The use of fresh ingredients really shines through in every dish. The grilled octopus was perfectly done, tender with a slight char that added so much flavor. The spicy guacamole was just the right amount of heat, and the hot sauce—delicious! Every bite was an explosion of taste. Service & Cleanliness: Thalia is just simply the best! She did not miss a beat! The service was impeccable, friendly, and attentive. The restaurant was clean, and even the bathroom was spotless, which is always a good sign. I highly recommend Ay Guey Cantina and Cocina. I will definitely be back for more!
We went there for the first time to celebrate a birthday party. What a nice surprise for everybody, the restaurant is simple but whit an atmosphere , service is always ready to help explain and suggest food choices . Everything was good starting whit the margaritas , we tried a lot of different dishes all good but my favorite was the ceviche and carne asada, in another level. We will come back soon 😘
We stopped by here after noticing it had opened a few weeks ago. Ordered the birria tacos, Aztec soup, chorizo perditas and some churros to go. Everything was really good and different than the usual Mexican fare. A regional style we hadn't had a chance to try. The owner (I think he was the owner anyway) seemed real nice and you can tell he is passionate about food and authenticity and it shows in the dishes offered. There has been 4 different restaurants at this location over the years and I think this one is my favorite. Hope they stay, so go get some grilled octopus and drinks or something. Update 12/19/23: Still really good. We try to order something different every time and tonight it was time for short rib enchiladas (really good), brisket tacos (can't remember the name but they were great) and a queso fondito served in a small cast iron skillet with caramelized crispy cheese edges that was phenomenal! If you go for the crispy corner piece of lasagna for the crispy brown cheese, this one is for you. The owner was really friendly and personable as usual.
Why haven’t you already registered to this amazing place hidden in the middle of Woodside Queens. Yes , another hidden gem! The food is 5 stars , the service from Artemis is 5 stars , ambiance and music 5 stars …. But the cocktails OMFG unreal , so so so good …. Give this spot a shot and I’ll guarantee you’ll be back to this Addiction of a friendly menu. Sometimes you just have to give in , into love of food.
Food took a while to get to our table . But it was very tasty . I walked in with my 2 kids and there was this lady seating at the bar I think she was the hostess or something she clearly worked there .she kept looking at us with a judgemental face and I overheard her saying kids are annoying and other remarks so I didn't felt welcome. My kids are really well behaved by the way . Bartender/ server was very nice and attentive, he did an excellent job making the drinks and making us feel special. Drinks were properly made and everything was fresh . I was the only one at the restaurant and the food could come faster and the girl in the front really ruined my experience.
The guacamole here is a standout, exceptionally fresh and flavorful, paired with equally fresh chips. The margarita, however, is average. The suadero tacos are slightly disappointing, containing small pieces of meat, which compromises the texture and overall experience. The owner provides friendly and welcoming service, and the spot has a cool atmosphere. However, the limited brunch menu during weekend days restricts dining options. It is recommended to visit during the evening for a more comprehensive menu.
Owner was really nice but there were some issues tonight: • Owner was the only staff member there waiting tables, so wait times were long. • Taking orders was halted so kitchen repairs could be done (someone went back with bug spraying equipment so not sure if that's actually what was being done), so no one was able to place any food orders of any kind for 30-40 minutes. • No drinks or food were comped because of this unfortunately, which would've been an easy thing to do to make up for the large delays/slow service. Drinks were great and creative, but the food was just alright and not worth the wait to be honest. Definitely need to bring more staff on and have some consideration for customers if delays like that happen again.
Food it’s okay for the price, but the drinks are very good! ( got the chicken with rice and beans and my wife chicken tacos)
I have lived in New York for 8 years and this is the worst Mexican meal I have ever experienced since coming here. The tacos were bland and stodgy. The yuca fries were simply frozen and raw? The guacamole was not fresh. It was beyond indelible I have never ever experienced such appalling food in New York, so vile.
