The second I walked in I literally said, "This is home", and for the two nights that I went there on my trip it really was. Both the staff and the actual people that go really make you feel like you belong. Love it to the moon and stars! Ps: VIC YOU'RE THE BEST!!!!
A very special place with the best LGBTQ+ atmosphere, especially for women. Great vibes and reasonably priced drinks to kick off the afternoon or evening!
Small WLW bar with chill vibe. Okay drinks and service. It's definitely the atmosphere that draws the crowd. No cover.
I am so happy to have been able to experience this place with my gf! So lively and there's a kind energy. The place is kind of small, headsup. The bartender was great, too! First place I'm visiting when I'm back in NY.
This place is brilliant! If you've had a bad time it's you are probably the issue... out of town tourists, never stepped foot in the place and everyone has been so friendly and welcoming... considering moving to NYC so this can be our new local
A beautiful place where human beings come together and enjoy good vibes and cheap drinks. With their $2 margaritas they do a great service to the community. I am so proud of them. A great bar for the gays. Also bartender is a friendly sweetheart.
Loved our drinks, and the bartender was incredibly friendly and had all kinds of great recommends for enjoying the village!
I was visiting NY tonight with a friend and decided to come by. I only got to pop in for a while and it was honestly because I spent alot of my time talking to the door person! I think their name was Camila (I might've butchered it sorry!) but literally such a vibe tonight with such a sweet personality. It got a bit loud inside at one point so I came out and talked to them for a while and they were soooo kind and funny and having great convos with like literally everyone who they checked in. Such a gem fr! I'll be back when I visit again!!
This place has a great vibe, cheap drinks, and friendly staff that make everyone feel welcome. I love the diversity here and the creativity of the various nights. Great neighborhood hangout that's inclusive of everyone.
My favorite bar! The bartenders are fantastic and friendly, the patrons are fun and nice, the space is cool and eclectic I'm a very cozy way, it's a great spot to meet somebody new or hang out with somebody old, can't go wrong with cubby
It's small, they only accept cash, and I like to go after my English classes.
The name says it all...This is a small space but sooooo entertaining and fun. Make sure to stop by on a Tuesday where drinks are $2.00 and if you have some change you can hear all your favorite tunes! People are dancing and just having a great time . A great queer atmosphere!
Cardi was the best bouncer! Made sure everyone was safe.
Love this place! The ambiance and the music are great! The location (in the west village) is fantastic. It’s a great place to have a drink, dance the night away and mingle. It’s a bit small so it can get crowded sometimes but this doesn’t prevent you from having a good time. I recommend!
Awesome place! Only wish it was bigger :) in the landscape of diminishing places for queer ladies to gather, this place is like an oasis, and everybody for miles comes to drink lol. Good people come here. Sometimes at happy hour it gets crazy loud and you have to scream so the bartender'll hear your order, other times its so packed there's literally a line around the block to get in, it's that popular. Love it forever
I’ve been coming to Cubby every week for 2 years now and I can hardly find the words for how amazing of a bar it is. Kass, Vick, Marissa, Omar, & the rest of the Cubby team are INCREDIBLE. This is such a haven for the queer/female community here in nyc and I always have an amazing time when I pull up. If you’re looking for a bar to frequent or even just a one off good night, this is the place for you. The music? Immaculate. The drinks are so good every damn time. & to top it all off the community is just one of a kind and so welcoming. I’ve made so many friends here and couldn’t be more grateful for the community Cubbyhole provides us. Here’s to another 30 years of Cubs!!🩶💋
Amazing experience! Omar is super kind and the door person was super welcoming. The vibes were great and supportive. It’s a small place so be warned if you’re going on Friday or Saturday, but it’s chill and fun during the weekdays.
As pretty much the only lesbian bar in Manhattan, the place was packed. Go during the happy hour and then stay all night. There is no food but there are restaurants a block away. The decorations are fun.
Omar and Kass are AMAZING hosts/bartenders. They made us feel at home, gave great recommendations to visit around the city and the drinks were perfectly mixed. We will come back here for just them!
We loved this bar. Despite being three gay men and a straight woman, we felt truly welcome. The woman at the bar was huge fun and had a massive personality. We put loads of camp classics on the juke box and the bar came alive (like to Dancing Queen). Everyone who came in the bar was respectful that it was a lesbian bar.
great place to meet other people! however I wish the music selections were a bit different. the drinks are well priced and the interior is cozy
Great to still have this kind of a bar in NYC.
Best lesbian bar in this entire country. The crowd here is typically late 20's to 30's. Drinks are typical of a dive bar (don't expect anything fancy). Vibes are always immaculate, good music is always playing and on more than one occasion they've ordered pizza/given free shots for the entire bar around happy hour. This is my happy place!
Nice cool place to drink a beer enjoyed with your best friend.
Adorable girly gay spot for when you want something more chill & lowkey than Henrietta Hudson :) atmosphere is amazing, so many cool colorful trinkets all over the wall and ceiling🌈✨🤩and very cute jukebox, nice for meeting and talking to people
Ladies, come here anytime with an open heart and you might meet your soulmate. I’m serious. Drinks are affordable. Cash only. Tip your bartender generously and they will take care of you. Music played has a great variety and spans all genres. Quite a tiny space but that is exactly what makes it incredibly charming. Cheers gals!
great happy hour, great vibe. recommend going early as it can get crowded but it's a lovely bar with a beautiful history
Incredibly friendly lesbian dive bar. Cash only! They do allow outside food to be ordered, but the space is tiny and I've never seen anyone with a pizza inside. For the record, they do offer hot pockets, but the bartender will turn you down the instant you order them. It's a meat market for lesbians in the Village. Both bartenders and patrons are very friendly to straight people and the atmosphere is always fun. I recommend for late night drinks as it closes at 4. I do not recommend for food.
This is my favorite bar in NYC, above all others. As a queer woman in NYC, this place is home.
My FAVORITE place in NYC. The bartenders take care of you like family. I always make a new friend here. The best place to go if you just want to unwind after a long day or if you want to party hard with someone new. I made friends here in June, and here I am 5 months later and I'm welcomed by name from my bartenders and hugged and kissed by friendly faces. Come here, you won't regret it.
Best little dive Bar in NYC Great place to hang loose with friends
The Cubbyhole is an amazing bar, staffed by workers who curate a throughly welcoming and fun environment, even on weekdays, 5/5 come through!
A cult classic and obligatory pit stop for any LGBT fortunate to be on the Manhattan island, cheers to blurry nights and great memories x
It was PACKED but that’s what made it so much fun! I was able to snag a seat at the bar with my sister! We immediately were greeted by the bartenders and other patrons were just SO SWEET. The crowd sang songs together all throughout the night which I thought was so cute, very NYC LOL. We definitely made some cool friends that night and my experience was very memorable… I will FOR SURE BE BACK. Oh yeah also it’s CASH ONLY and the ATM actually stopped working when we were there so just make sure you have extra cash on you!
They were incredibly generous with our non-profit organization, and we cannot thank them enough. They donated to our annual Pride Celebration, and we appreciate it. Highly recommend!
M and Vic are the heart of my experiences at Cubbyhole- the most hospitable, kind and community oriented people I’ve ever encountered. I couldn’t imagine it being half as exceptional without them. They have quite literally gone out of their way to make sure I’ve gotten home safely- as much as calling a car for me- just to ensure I am okay. There’s no other place- no other people- that I’ve met to do that in NYC. They truly bring the magic that is Cubbyhole!!!!
The safe haven for sapphics of New York City - always a good time, good people, and good service.
All my visits to this place have been unique and pleasant. I have read some of the other reviews, my experiences have been from good to great. Have had the good fortune of visiting on at least three separate occasions, when visiting NYC each a different day and time . Got to experience the place during lazy weekend, weekday afternoons and a Saturday night ( line out the door). Miracle of miracles got the same seats at the bar each time near the jukebox. An ideal location for observing/ overhearing the organized chaos of the other patrons. Bar people each time vary and generally I had no issue. Bring your cash as no Apple Pay / credit/ debit cards accepted. This also ranks as the #1 conversation topic overheard (since using cash is so 2008). Listed as a place to revisit each time I’m privileged to come to NYC.
I’ve been all over the nation and the cubbyhole is most definitely the best lesbian bar in the United States! Great vibes, awesome atmosphere and always a great time.
I have been here twice, once it was extremely packed on a weekend. It was really hard to order from the bar, but that was only because there were so many people. But I had a really great time and everyone was extremely nice. The second time I went was during the weekday and there were maybe ten people in the bar along with me. Again everyone was really nice, and I had a great experience both times. I get the feeling that this is a local bar, but I could be wrong about that.
Any queers who said they had a "great" experience but gave this place 4 stars needs to have a word with me. I mean, if you're intentionally voting Cubbyhole down bc you don't want the straights to find it, don't worry - they won't last an hour if they do come in. If, on the other hand, you can't comprehend that community care also means giving the local legendary Queer bar five stars on some random algo that popped off decades after this bar opened, Cubbyhole's probably better off without you hun. If you've left a 5 star review and you're over 37, come find me. 😜
Very fun vibes… and super nice staff. I loved my time here, definitely coming back. Ps: Cash only in place!
Cartier best security, had a lovely nightcap after attending a burlesque show in Brooklyn and wanted to swing by my old digs.
This bar is so cute. Be prepared it is TINY but I loved the atmosphere. Drinks weren’t too badly priced. I’ll be back next time I’m in the city!
It’s like the “cheers” of gay bars - been coming here for almost 20 years and the staff takes really good care of folks. Want to specifically shout out Omar and Kass who just last night kept us safe when a group of pretty disrespectful and aggressive men came in with their girlfriends and started trying to take over the bar by being pushy, demanding, and physically imposing. They cut the them off at the bar before it escalated to something dangerous and had security take them out. Really appreciated that!
Came on a Saturday night while Omar and Kas were working. They were absolutely great and handled the crowd well. I’m not much for busy crowds but they made me feel so at home. From the crowd to the staff they all make you feel welcome. Also shout out to the bouncer at the door for handling unfriendly guests with class. We witnessed an unfortunate situation but the bouncer was quick to handle it and took the guest outside to de-escalate the situation. 100% recommend. I will definitely be returning
CANNOT LOVE THIS PLACE MORE. I came from Rhode island for the first time on Wednesday for my birthday with a friend and ended up meeting and chatting with the bartender, Mitch who literally made my entire birthday so magical and I honestly had the time of my life because of the vibes in here. The community, the attention to detail in the drinks was top notch, it was literally such a vibe and im forever grateful for the effort they put in to make my birthday so special !!! Thank you to the whole team 🙏
As a visibly nonbinary person, I wanted to hit queer bars but was worried about being out of place. I figured for me, a lesbian bar was probably a safer, more welcoming bet, and I was 100% correct. I felt completely like I fit in, even when mostly I was just hanging out and enjoying the vibe. Good non-alcoholic drinks, and a great vibe and crowd even at 1 AM on a Tuesday. People were welcoming and willing to chat with someone who came alone, and it was a nice mix of locals and not. Absolutely recommended for trans people or just anyone wanting a good sapphic place to hang out.
Best bar in NYC! Came here three nights in a row and every time loved the friendly vibe, great bartenders and reasonably priced drinks. Ladies, come to cubby!
Fun queer-friendly bar if you're ever in nyc, highly recommend. Amazing drinks, nice cool air during warm days, great vibe, also, cute bartender. Been here twice and it's already a favorite hangout spot.
I absolutely loved Cubbyhole. This queer-friendly dive bar has an atmosphere that’s both wild and welcoming. The decor is incredibly dense—rainbows, twinkle lights, hanging toys—yet somehow it all works without tipping into kitsch. We visited during happy hour and had Dyke Beer for $5, which was not only excellent but perfectly suited to the space. The crowd was diverse, the energy was joyful, and the overall vibe was fantastic. Easily one of the best bar experiences I’ve had in the city.
One of the best bars I have been to in NYC 🏳️🌈 We were there on a Monday afternoon and it was still buzzing and atmospheric as if it was a Friday or Saturday night. Deb on the bar was friendly, welcoming and hilarious, playing great tunes, drinking games and handing out free pizza! Super quirky and colourful decor inside. The happy hour is also great - $5 fizz! This bar is a must visit!! I have been back many times since and always have an incredible time. 4 dollar well drinks on happy hour!!!! Can't beat it.
I had already been at this bar which is famous for its cocktails and drinks specials. I visited again last night, which was a Sunday night and ask the male bartender (I am a woman, maybe that explained it) for the drinks or specials menu. He said there were no specials and kept leaving every time I asked him something. I finally got a draft and an orange juice and of course I didn't leave any tip. Later on that same night I saw an ad featuring their Sunday nights drink specials. I won't say I won't be back as the atmosphere is nice and unfortunately there are not many places for gay ladies in New York, but I was really disappointed with the service.
This is a very welcoming bar (even for breeders). It never fails that we strike up a conversation with a fellow patron. Everyone is here to enjoy themselves. It gets very packed but the bartenders are very attentive & will get you a drink in quick order. Keep in mind that it's cash only. They have a terrific jukebox that will keep you dancing (if you can find the space) all night.
Didn't order the food so can't comment but the decor was immaculate friendly place my only issue is there were so many people popular joint little claustrophobic but so cool i stayed longer than comfortable haha
This bar is Floridaphobic!! No not really, I love this place. I love the service here. The vibes and atmosphere. But it’s happened three times to me where I’ll bring over friends so that they can a place I treasure but they keep getting denied. People who are 25, 30 can’t get in. I’m not sure if the technology isn’t updated or what, but it has been a little disheartening. All love though!
Fun vibe. They just let too many people inside (very small space, VERY packed). Like shoulder-to-shoulder at 11pm. I know they rebranded to a queer bar rather than lesbian but it’s pretty lesbian lol. A lot of PDA which was kinda jarring. There’s an electric jukebox. Pretty cool. They blow bubbles. Pretty cool. Not a place for dancing. There’s just no room to dance. A Long Island ice tea was $14 and solid. Strong. They also have $8 beers. Cash only. No credit/card.
This is the first lesbian bar I’ve ever visited and I’m glad I went there with my friends! The decorations on the ceilings are cute there was a beanie with the word “Uhaul” which was hilarious. (I bet you all know about uhaul lesbian). However the place was way too small and crowded I really hope we can have a bigger place to dance or something
Location is nice and cozy; cool decor, but it gets crowded quickly and space fills up fast. Lower rating b/c one of the bar-tenders was super icy towards me and my friend group, yet wouldn’t allow the other bartender to wait on us ... we left early because of this 😪 sad since we had heard great things about the location and it’s friendliness. Photos already up due the place justice - think more kickback than club.
Good music and fun atmosphere but extremely crowded. This bar needs to have a CAP on the amount of people allowed to enter because it makes the experience unenjoyable. I could barely walk through the crowd to meet my friend.
It's a great bar but if you go after 10 or so it starts to get packed and becomes hot and muggy. Happy hour is nice though, drinks are cheap. Be warned that on very popular nights there's a line outside so you might have to wait in the cold a bit. The gay culture inside is mostly reserved to friend groups and couples. The bartenders are friendly and nice.
Disappointed they let (cis) men in. 1. Out of safety for lesbians and 2. How packed it is, women should have first priority to the space
i love the vibe of this place but the bartenders are so damn rude it ruins it tbh, why do you guys have to roll your eyes so much if you hate working service in a tourist city then don’t! i literally only asked which beers they had, you didn’t need to be an ass their mean girls complex are embarrassing
Bartender on 8/31 was super nasty to me and my friend! We tipped him multiple times and he was giving us dirty looks and being nasty to us the whole night. Then around 2am they started closing the bar over an hour and a half early, so we asked why they were closing so early he literally said to us “well when you don’t tip we close early” EVEN THOUGH WE TIPPED HIM MULTIPLE TIMES. The audacity is unreal, and I thought this place was supposed to be open and accepting, turns out they are just money hungry. If this place hires bartenders that treat their guests/customers like this then I want no part in it and will be informing others not to come here. Bartender if you are reading this you are a nasty rat and I regret tipping you. YOU DESERVE NOTHING.
this was my FOURTH TIME trying to get into this place, and still no dice. usually the line is way too long or something, but this time i was denied entry because my driver’s PERMIT was expired. just because i can’t legally drive doesn’t make me not 23. i recently took a flight using this ID, so it makes no sense that i can’t be let into a bar with it. whatever, there are plenty of other lesbian clubs in new york. don’t waste your time with this one.
I used to love this place however after the pandemic, they got some new staff (kids) and the service has been horrible since then. The host had her friends sitting down drinking water. While a group of us (5) wanted to actually get drinks, sit down and spend money. We were told to go inside even after i pointed that out. We went inside and 1 of us took 20 mins to get attention from the bartender and get beers because apparently they couldn’t make any of the mixed drinks we asked. I used to love cubby but they need to either talk/train their staff on the business aspect of things and customer service. Whether i know the bartender or not should not play a factor on what type of service I receive. I hope they better the staff and the service quality.
Most unprofessional bar ever. Don't even get me started on the bouncer. Venue was a fire hazard, no room to move or dance (but not the workers fault). However, the male bartender was very aggressive about us tipping (we literally were about to tip too) and after we paid he came back to us and asked if we tipped the female bartender and then asked the female bartender if we tipped as if he didn't believe us (like we did 😐). After paying $20 (and some tip) for an overpriced margarita in a plastic cup, it was the weakest margarita ever filled to the top with ice. There was no alcohol in this drink. Worst place ever, couldn't pay me to come back, rude and degrading staff, and would never spend my money there again. If you're the male bartender that night reading this, please work on your attitude issues, it's not a good look <3
My sister and her friends went for the first time and they were attacked by women they didn’t know and assaulted by the bouncer because the women were regulars. It’s an unsafe environment if you’re not from the area the locals start trouble just to start trouble it’s sad. Even though we have these people clearly on video nothing is ever done but we can speak about the danger these bars bring to someone you love!
Real shame that a turist is treated like a peace of s*. If you ask a waitress, you have to know what they are serving...if you don't know what kind of beer they have and ask her for help, you'll get a reply "I don't have time to deal with you, order when you'll know the brand" and then leaves and continues to serve other (I assume) local guests. Always lovely to be in safe and loving place. Thank you
management and bartenders seem to not care about patrons - especially if u aren’t a regular. News flash- we are all spending money here whether we are regular customers or not. Not a good place to pick up women. Everyone is already in their own cliques and feels like high school all over again. Bartenders and management need to be humbled. You know- you aren’t THAT cool working as a bartender for 20,000$ a year and being ran through by every average blonde white hippie girl that walks in there. Embarrassing.
I had a good time until I didn't. I am a Brown woman that is visiting from another state, and I was kicked out of the bar for something that I did not do and was not my fault. There was a white woman and her party that (for the 2.5 hours that I was there) was purposefully and maliciously grinding, making out, and bumping into my friend and I who are both brown. In the end, the person that I was with unfortunately became aggressive and pushed them because she was sick and tired of asking them to give us space after they were not respecting our wishes. The bar is small, but there /was/ enough room to move someplace else. They chose not to. When I tried to explain the situation to a worker, I was asked to leave despite not being part of the problem and after trying to get them to understand what had been happening for the past two hours. I tried to give cubby hole the benefit of the doubt when I read from other POC that this was not an inclusive space, but after my experience, I will never be going back because these people are only allies to white lesbians.
Worst bartenders ever. Had the worst experience on 04/18 - as the bartender (girl) and Omar, absolutely ignore me and my girlfriend after we had more than 4 drinks (with tip) - The girl was VERY rude and always back talking when we asked something about the drinks. I’ve traveled the world and I’ve never experienced something like this ever! I would never recommend this place for anyone… not LGBT friendly at all!
Bad place to go. Unsafe. Bartenders extremely unprepared and rude to costumers. Drinks are questionable and unreliable. They only accept cash, you won't have proof of what you drank. Besides myself, I know several women who had a very bad time after going to this bar. The bar stinks, the toilets are filthy. If you go to this bar, it's better to go with friends and never alone. I attended and today I don't recommend it. There are many other places that offer much more quality and especially safety if you're queer.
For an LGBTQIA+ establishment, the service was VERY unsettling and incredibly poor. The only female bartender on Cinco de Mayo with the glasses was INCREDIBLY rude after catering to her “chosen family” at a FULL bar for 90% of the time. I had spoke with 3 other guests who also felt ignored and under serviced. Not only have other patrons waited for drinks like myself for over 20 minutes , but another woman was trying to get the bartender’s attention because she asked for 4 drinks and only received 3 of them. The bar tender was dismissing and talked back with a rude attitude. After reading some of these reviews—I know which bartender the negative ones are concerning. Working in the service industry, if you are catering to a personal guest on a VERY busy day — you at the very LEAST should be asking the guests nearby if they need anything when you pop over. Don’t just ignore patrons because they will never come back.
This used to be a lesbian bar... Now I don't know what it is but it isn't just our place anymore. It used to be more strict. We don't have enough spaces for us.
This place could be fun but overall is awful due to the horrible service. Woman with dark hair and tattoos is the slowest bartender w/ a nasty attitude. Caters more to gay men than any women in the bar. Yelled at young girl in her 20’s for not tipping. Weird ambience and vibe. Not the ideal place to pick up women bc it’s swarming with gay men. Bartenders can be rude. I only come once a year to cubby but each time I come I get treated like an outsider. Don’t feel welcomed.
I was here on Saturday night by myself. I came in earlier when there was no line and had been there for about an hour and a half. I had met someone who left to walk their friend to an Uber and was coming back. I had just ordered a drink and walked over to the window to look to see if she was in the line that had formed outside. As I turned around to walk back towards the bar, the bouncer (probably the only cishet male that was there) stopped me and pointed to the door. Confused, I asked what he meant. He said “you have to wait in line” to which I said “I’ve been here for over an hour.” He said “I didn’t see you come in” etc etc. I literally had a fresh drink in hand, a few others folks said to him “she’s been here” and he still very rudely made me leave. I gave up as he was making me feel unsafe and had to wait in line to come back. Then had to dump my drink that I had just paid for. It is truly sad that this is supposed to be a “safe space” and it isn’t. The bartender was rude - I understand being overwhelmed because it’s busy but I’ve been in that situation and there’s a way to handle it and not be rude. Nobody helped me with the bouncer when I tried to ask other employees for help. It’s just not a great place and I’m not in any rush to ever go back.
Rudest staff I’ve ever experienced. Tall bartender rolled his eyes when I ordered water and made rude remarks to my sister/friends.
As others have stated in more detail, if you’re a minority, please stay away. The claim that it’s inclusive is laughable. Living in the neighborhood for years as a brown queer woman, I’ve never felt welcome.
Went in, was completely ignored by staff and patronage. Noticed it was cash bar only and decided to leave. Made me feel like a worthless person.
*One-Star Review: Unacceptable Experience at Cubbyhole* I'm extremely disappointed in the service I received at Cubbyhole on June 27. As a paying customer, I was minding my own business at the end of happy hour when, without provocation, a white male staff member grabbed me from my bar stool and threw me out. This incident occurred without any prior interaction or verbal exchange between us, leaving me shaken and disrespected. Given that I was the only black female in the bar, I'm concerned that this unprovoked attack may have been motivated by bias or prejudice. As a customer, I expect to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of my background or identity. *Key Issues:* - *Unprovoked Physical Altercation*: The staff member's actions were unwarranted and unacceptable. - *Lack of Respect*: I was not treated with the respect and dignity that every customer deserves. - *Potential Bias*: The incident may have been influenced by bias or prejudice, given the circumstances. *Recommendations for Improvement:* - *Staff Training*: Provide staff with training on de-escalation techniques, customer service, and bias awareness. - *Accountability*: Ensure that staff members are held accountable for their actions. - *Inclusive Environment*: Foster an inclusive environment where all customers feel welcome and respected. Unfortunately, my experience at Cubbyhole was marred by unacceptable behavior from a staff member. I hope that the establishment will take steps to address these issues and provide a better experience for all customers.
