Great vegan spot near downtown and the north side of Lady Bird Lake! We had the mozzarella pizza and Phillip, which were both great. The tiramisu cheesecake was also well done. Be prepared to wait up to thirty minutes on a busy night due to limited outdoor seating. There are very few parking spaces but decent street parking nearby. Friendly service. Would visit again!

The atmosphere is very cozy, the inside closed for COVID. However, customer service was AMAZING. Did I mention the food?? It’s so yummy and there is a good selection of dishes worth the price and it’s vegan, so that’s a bonus. I loved the waitress asked if there were any food allergies we should know of before she sent the order back. My only suggestion is to get the flies on the patio under control, which I’m sure they will.

I LOVE this place and make sure to eat here every time we are in Austin. The food is hearty & flavorful. It’s also creative but still with a home cooked feel. The ambiance is low key, comfortable and the staff is always very upbeat and courteous. Brunch is often busy, so plan ahead and have a nice walk down to the river while you wait.

Jillana Holt-Reuter

We came here on a recommendation of a friend and we were NOT disappointed. Our server was pleasantly attentive, knowledgeable of the menu items, and never stopped smiling. She makes you feel like she is genuinely concerned about your dining experience and that's because she is!! The atmosphere is welcoming and you have no problem not tracking time as you eat your hot, delicious meal. Make sure you get dessert!!

Consistently one of our favorite vegan spots in Austin. Their mac and cheese is by far my favorite in the city, and really all of their dishes are outstanding. They have so many gluten free options as well, and I never feel limited. Their takeout is excellent and seamless, online ordering is a breeze, and when you get there they bring it right to your car. Can't recommend enough!!

Everyone is so friendly! The food totally blew us away. For anyone who likes to say that vegan food isn’t good, check out Counter Culture! Highly recommend! The patio was so comfy, with a bunch of happy plants everywhere. Inside, there’s a bunch of artwork from local artists. Amazing.

J

Excellent overall experience. I got the lentil loaf with toast beets and kale salad. It was all excellent. If you’re hungry, the lentil loaf will definitely fill you up. Everyone was super friendly and price was great. Will be my go-to Austin vegan spot!

V
Veggie Terry

Awesome vegan food! The staff is really great, and accommodating, making sure your meal is perfect. Went there for the brunch and mimosas. Would highly recommend this place! I had the seasonal omelette, which is tofu based and cashew cheese and veggies, and a side of seitan sausage. So delicious! Was not disappointed. Also the mimosas there are really great!

N
Natalie Hill

Best vegan comfort food in town, by a mile. The combinations of flavors and textures are always on point. I especially love the #1 Bowl with seitan. The ambience on Tweedy’s patio is chill and I enjoy getting a cupcake at Zucchini Kill for dessert. Chef’s kiss, perfect.🤌

joseph onwuteaka

Everything was perfect! My friend and I went and ordered Nachos, Mac and Cheese bites , Artichoke dip, quesadillas and brownie sundae. Everything was perfect. The flavor in their food is amazing. 10/10 would recommend. Food is on the spicy side (I love spicy food) but great flavor for sure. Black beans are 🤤 . Our waiter Jordan was great and checked on us regularly. I would suggest ordering more than one appetizer and just split with friends. Great for vegans or anyone wanting to be a vegan for a day.

Becca Steinbach

A fantastic catering experience! I was hosting a dinner party and knew Counter Culture would be perfect. Sue was great to work with and had awesome recommendations for a delicious vegan dinner- several of my guests hadn't had an all-vegan meal before and were so impressed with how delicious everything was. The Tex Mex mac and cheese and BBQ seitan were both favorites. I'll definitely be back!

C

This is a great little place. Drug my non vegan dad in and made him eat there. He loved It! The raw butternut squash tacos were really good. Even better if you get them on a tortilla. The jack fruit Quesadillas were phenomenal. So so good!! Their food is tasty, reasonably priced and the atmosphere is very homey. Our waitress was new and still learning but she was super nice and seemed sincere. I would recommend this to anyone, vegan or not. Definitely stopping by again when I am in town.

R
Randi Neubeck

This was my first time to Counter Culture! All the wait staff was very attentive and friendly! Vegans and vegetarians will have plenty to choose from on the menu! Masks are required for entry. Food was delicious, well portioned and fairly priced. 10/10 would come here again! The patio is shielded from the street by shrubs and there are plants decorating the outside. Definitely an eclectic vibe.

R

We recently had Counter Culture cater a small event for us and we would definitely do it again in the future! Sue, the owner, could not have been more helpful as we were putting together a menu for our group. We had several vegans and several non-vegans attending the event, and everyone had great compliments for the food provided by Counter Culture! The salads are fantastic, the BBQ jackfruit and beans were a knockout favorite, and the cornbread was delicious too. They were on time, super accommodating and easy to work with. A great local spot and an excellent vegetarian/vegan option in Austin.

I work across the street so I often come here for a quick sandwich, soup, drink, or snack. It’s been a while since I did dine-in but I’ve always had great experiences with getting quick service, and the staff are always very friendly and polite. Food wise, I really like their seitan, especially on the sandwiches but the skewer appetizer is great too. The Mac and cheese balls are really nice also, and the rotating pizza flavors are fun. They also do really great seasonal specials! I’m always so much more impressed by places that do rotating specials because it makes the experience more fun for regulars like me. Also, their cheezecakes are absolutely delightful. I’m partial to any of them with chocolate but you really can’t go wrong. This place is a staple for vegan comfort food on the south side of downtown. Go support your local vegan businesses y’all! They are making the world a better place.

Really good vegan food. I had the cauliflower tostada with turtle cheesecake for dessert. Delicious. Parking was a little rough, but we found a good spot on a side street. Ate in the covered outdoor area. The waitress was delightful. Gave great recommendations.

Counter Culture is the spot to go for your Vegan meals in Austin. The options are out of the ordinary and delicious. My go to is the Beet Mushroom Burger. And today just added to that the Gazpacho...soooo good and with a spicy kick to boot. The service and atmosphere is great. Indoor and outdoor seating options. Abby took my order and was very conversational and approachable. Which is always a plus for any dinning experience. Great spot!

M

This is an amazing place! Our family was so excited to find Counter Culture. Over a long weekend visit we actually ate there twice. The menu is absolutely exciting, pushing beyond the typical vegan comfort food and landing squarely in the realm of whole food plant based. Really appreciated the use of local sourced tempeh and house made seitan. Did I tell you we loved this place! We tried the Ruben and the pastrami sandwiches, migas bowl, brownie sundae, breakfast burrito, pesto pizza and a few other items. All were well balanced and consistent in execution. Really good cooking!! Thank you so much for taking the time to do things right! We just found another reason to return to Austin.

This place is AMAZING!! I brought my two omnivore parents here today and even my dad (who hates vegetables more than anything) enjoyed it. They have big enough servings that all three of us had to get take out boxes to bring the rest home. The food is delicious, and the vibe of the restaurant is super chill. Overall a great place for vegans and omnivores alike.

Fun and different foods! The BBQ Seitan sandwich was excellent!

One of the best, dependable and top notch Vegan restaurants in Austin. It's quality, quantity and service is commendable. Never once in these 5 years have we been disappointed. They pivoted during the pandemic to do curb-side only. The quality and quantity never wavered even then. An Austin Vegan institution.

Counter Culture will always hold a very special place in my heart. When my son was in the NICU for a week, we came here for meals in between long hours at the hospital. It was a roller coaster of emotions. The staff have followed his story and kept us from feeling alone. They almost feel like family now! We’ve been regulars ever since, and have had nearly everything on the menu. My current favorite menu items are the maple BBQ seitan sandwich and nachos. But everything we’ve had here is wonderful and reasonably priced. I really appreciate that everything is house made. Out of the many vegan restaurants in the area, this is the only one we frequent now. It’s really our happy place! Callie was the fourth person to ever hold our baby!

So incredible! I'd give 6 stars if I could. I was part of a party of 4 and it was the first visit for each of us. We're all either really new to the vegan lifestyle, or are only loosely "disciplined" when it's convenient. We each loved our individual entrees, and tasted everyone else's, too. Every single item was something, without question, that I would love even if I wasn't a vegan. Truly amazing! Starting top left and going clockwise: BBQ jackfruit and bean quesadilla, Cold Cutz sub, Mac & Cheeze, Beet Mushroom Walnut Burger on gluten free bread.

We came in less than an hour before close but the employees were so gracious. Amazing energy and they have made the outside patio sooo dreamy/comfortable cute. The food and service was literally the best and as for customer service I am so picky sooo this is real... Callie great communication you are sooo kind! This is where you should go to support the original cute restaurants in Austin. Thank you all so much!

A locally owned and deliciously healthy gem! The rich and vibrant flavors of the bowls at CC are amazing and go against all the stereotypes of vegan food. I wish the sauces could be bought by the bottle! The #1 and #2 bowls are amazing and a must try. The wait for food was not long, especially considering it was Friday night, and it is quite affordable for the quality and quantity. I am excited to return and try more menu items. Bonus, you can get vegan sweet treats at Zucchini Kills next door and good drinks from Tweedy’s. All around a nice spot for a casual meal and great vibes.

One of my favorite places! Amazing small business with delicious food in a fun neighborhood. The patio is such a nice, chill atmosphere and the service is always impeccable. The owner really gives back to the community too. I’ve eaten here with many non-vegans as well! We always walk over to Capital City Bakery for some coffee & a baked good to go after our meal :)

E
Elizabeth Louzon

My husband and I went for brunch and the food was delicious! I had the biscuit and gravy bowl, he had the hash, and we split the watermelon gazpacho. The biscuit and gravy bowl had the perfect amount of spice for me (mild spice not too much) and the biscuit had a good texture and consistency to it. The gazpacho caught us both off guard as it was very flavorful and perfect for a summer brunch appetizer. The staff was very attentive and friendly the moment we walked in. The atmosphere was that of a cute and cozy diner. Street parking nearby was free and easy. We will be back and recommending to others for sure!

Counter Culture in Austin is a vegan's comfort food haven! This restaurant has so many different & tasty meals to choose from; it's hard to pick one! My favorite main is their Baked Mac & Cheeze, with a side of the Potato Salad. I always get their Arnold Palmer -- Lavender Lemonade and Hibiscus Iced Tea.

E

This was my first stop in Austin after checking in to my hotel. I read reviews of a whole bunch of local places before coming here, and decided to take my chances with Counter Culture. They did not disappoint! The staff is very friendly, and the atmosphere is really peaceful.

My wife and I love to visit this place whenever we happen to be in town. Great place to grab a meal before a concert in the Austin area. The food will keep you energized throughout the night and won't weigh you down. They have a great menu along with a nice craft beer selection. They run daily specials and I highly recommend trying a couple of their desserts. Even if you're stuffed, take some desserts to go. You'll be happy you did!

This place was absolutely amazing. Great food, great service. I forgot to take a picture I was so excited to try new dishes, as you can see by my half eaten plate. The quesadilla & the beet burger were delicious. Awesome taste & perfect flavors.

Had the specials tonight... vegetarian ham and cheese and the peach cheesecake. Both were incredible and 100% mouth-wateringly satisfying. The cheesecake was especially "¡Wow!" I love this place. Come and eat here!

Azadi Bogolubov

Extremely tasty vegan joint. Featured are the Reuben and The Meltdown. The seitan was devilishly good, lol. Tasted just like the classic sandwich, and the sesame slaw was unlike anything I had ever had. It was like a vinegar slaw but far more flavor. The Meltdown was a garbanzo based tuna sandwich and my wife seemed to enjoy it.

Had the nachos and they were delicious and also the BBQ sandwich. Nice staff and the outside patio is cozy. Great spot

My husband and I went on a total vegan food eating spree on our trip from Seattle and this place stood out as one of our favorites. Everything we ordered was absolutely incredible. Peach Texan sandwich, BLTA salad and Mac and cheese balls. Staff was also very welcoming and friendly. RECOMMEND! :)

This is by far my favorite vegan cafe in Austin. The food is always fresh, creative, and delicious. The service and the people who work here are absolutely amazing. Their brunch is one of the best in Austin. Their specialty gluten free pancakes on the weekends always impress me. Their cheesecakes are continually incredible and decadent. I could go on and on about this place, but honestly you have to go check it out for yourself. It's the best. I love it. My husband and I love it so much, we had our rehearsal dinner here the night before our wedding. They made us their special bruchetta and BBQ soy curl or jerk seitan tacos. Seriously, no other restaurant like it in Austin. Eating here makes me feel good inside and out. Go check it out immediately! Update from 2022: If anything the food has gotten even better several years later! I still love this place and it is my favorite vegan eatery in the world. 🌎 ♡

Stopped here for a quick lunch on the outside patio. Great service from start to finish, and their food was delicious! I ordered a vegan tempeh ruben and potato salad. Their fresh home-made watermelon, pineapple and lime juice was a great dessert for a hot summer day.

WONDERFUL VEGAN FOOD!!!!! Got the nachos, beet burger, maple bbq sandwich, and the tiramisu cheese cake. All were phenomenal and big portions. 10/10 would go again and I'd be very tempted to get the exact same things again!

Delicious quality food! Love the whole culture here and the variety of plant-based options. Ranging from raw options and soups (the watermelon gazpacho is to die for!) to salads and vegan deli sandwiches, this place has a tasty option for everyone! Their seitan was the best consistency of seitan I’ve ever had (not too tough and chewy) and the kelp noodles were wholesome and filling but super healthy (just what I was hoping for!). Flavorful and different from your basic vegan restaurant options. Very friendly staff and dog-friendly outdoor seating! They make sure to serve dogs first and bring them their own fresh water bowls 🐾

All the food tastes amazing, we ordered the biscuit and gravy breakfast bowl thing, the breakfast burrito, the blueberry almond cupcake(!!!) and the hibiscus mint tea. I highly recommend all of them. Portion to price ratio is good too. The ambiance is nice, especially if you're into other places on Cesar Chavez. Service was prompt and friendly. They don't take American Express.

Ultimate vegan shop located near to Austin downtown (15mins away from UT,6th street and Rainey Street) Positives: *Food is very nice and considering limited number of vegan hotels in Austin, this is one of good choices *Ambience is good ,(attached photos) *Service is bit delayed due to crowd but staffs are very friendly and helpful *Affordable and is good for a evening/date dinner I won't say below as negatives but few things that can be changed *Parking is extremely limited and parking in nearby streets isn't always feasible *Limited seating and in weekends it gets crowded. *Some of the menu options weren't available when visited(eg.pizza) and those are mentioned as must try in other reviews. In future, will look forward to visit the shop and also will recommend as a good vegan restaurant. #HappyDining

We decided to try this place on a whim. Placed the order online and let them know we were outside sitting on the bench. Food came out quickly by a friendly server. We got the mock tuna sandwich, the bbq sandwich, the pecan cupcake and their lemon cake. Portions are generous, which is good because it's also delicious

I feel ignorant, I’ve been missing out great vegan food! My vegan friend brought me here, she comes very often. We started with the artichoke dip. The dio was nice and cream, full of taste and spice. The chips were tasteful alone. I had the BBQ Jackfruit quesadilla. The seasoning was so good it made me feel satisfyied for hours. The cornbread as my chosen side was great and the vegan butter too good to be true. I sat outside, simple yet natural and fresh environment. The inside seemed a little gloomy but it’s hard to tell. The service was quick and friendly. Hey I won’t go full vegan any time soon, but it’s good to know places like this exists in this lovely city. Cheers!

Counter Culture has savory and fulfilling vegan takes on many of your favorites (including Cheesecake Tiramisu) all while located on the spirited east Cesar Chavez. The staff here are helpful, cheerful, and entirely Austin, much like the space itself (outdoor seating and laid back). I cannot believe how long I've lived here but only recently (two weeks ago) got to have the Counter Culture experience. My only regret is not having had it sooner!

They have out done themselves again. I ordered the special hot dogs. 3 loaded hot dogs for $12. What a steal, I shared the plate with my friend and we were both full and satisfied 🤤 always fresh and exciting new dishes.

Loved the nachos and the service was great. We came on a Tuesday right before happy hour. My friend and I were the only ones there at the time which was kinda nice. Some others started to come when we finished. Anyway back to the nachos--split between two people and I was already full but ordered the salad sampler as well and it was a nice light compliment to the nachos. Couldn't finish it all so I took the rest to go.

A truly rare VEGAN restaurant. Wheelchair accessible. Patio dining for our 4 legged friends. Nice gender neutral bathrooms. The food was delicious and one tends to forget it all vegan...their deep fried macaroni and cheese was very good. In the August heat I recommend the watermelon gazpacho. Parking is limited but I would go again

Awesome Vegan Food in an uplifting atmosphere. Our waitress, Riley, couldn't have been nicer or more efficient. She was amazing and really made our dining experience so enjoyable. My husband had the Seitan Sub Supreme and I had the Nachos. Both were extremely good and we would definitely order them again. We also liked that we were able to enjoy the beautiful weather by dining on their spacious outdoor patio. Give them a try even if you aren't Vegan. Good food is good food and theirs is some of the best!

Brunch: omg how did we not know about this? I want breakfast all day, I'd come back just for their breakfast menu! One of the few places left that serve vegan biscuits! Dinner: The apple bacun sandwich was out of this world! We have been here before, but the menu has greatly improved since a few years ago! I will miss this place so much. Thank you for everything!

I must admit I had my doubts about going to a vegan restaurant with my friend. I was definitely impressed by, first the service and knowledge of our waitress Abby, and then again by my food. My meal had great balance and was far better than I could have expected. While the location and parking could be better, the food makes sure you will return. This is my go to vegan restaurant for non vegans.

Everything is delicious 😋. Dog friendly patio and super friendly servers. Beautiful outdoor seating. I took my omni family for Brunch and they loved it! The menu is very reasonably priced. Brunch for 5 people at $50 (excluding the mimosas). The Breakfast Sandwich is loaded with flavor and the turtle cheesecake is to die for. The mimosas are perfect and made with fresh orange juice. I was so excited to eat I forgot to take pictures of the food. Just go, it's a gorgeous place with lots of delicious food and kind servers.

I love this place! Great food, love that the patio is dog-friendly, and i've just consistently had good experiences with the staff. I think it would get a true 5/5 if they upped their cocktail/drinks experience. Although the lavender lemonade mimosas are super tasty, I ordered a carafe and drank the whole thing and couldn't taste or feel a lick of alcohol though I don't drink often, and more choices/variety would be nicer.

A serious vegan menu for serious and not so serious vegans. Highly recommend their carafes of fruity mimosas and the specials are always out of this world. It's a great place to grab brunch or dinner but like all things in Austin, there maybe a line so bring your patience along with your appetit but it will definitely be worth the wait!

The selection of vegetarian food for Texas was good, but it wasn’t really tasty.

Really good vegan place. Lots of items on the menu, and there are also daily specials. The alt scene of Austin seems to hang around here.

The food was very tasty and the service was friendly. Mosquitoes were horrible in their outdoor dining area. They did have insect repellent, but I highly recommend eating inside if you go there in the late afternoon or evening.

My garbanzo “tuna” sandwich was delicious, though I’d have liked it a bit more if the wheat bread were a little heartier, such as a Dave’s Killer Bread type. Roasted sweet potatoes and beets were good but, here too, the presentation lacked something. Beets were the slightly bit too al dente. Plum oolong tea was tasty. The blue painted walls were oddly calming. Service was friendly and attentive. I’d go back for sure; hard to find good vegan food where i live.

Very good and very filling. I felt the menu was a tad on the sparse side as I'm gluten free as well but what we did have was very good. The pancakes we're good, but not amazing. The tempeh bacon and roasted potatoes though we're very very nice. My husband was also a big fan of the spelt biscuit and gravy.

I only go here for desserts! I love their desserts. The food is eh, it’s okay. I love that their are many vegan restaurants everywhere and I can appreciate this place for that, but I also think it is overpriced and just okay. BUT TRY THEIR DESSERTS. You won’t regret it, I promise. And also their jackfruit quesadilla wasn’t bad.

They are super friendly! HAVE to try the Lavender Lemonade! I'm not a lavender person in the slightest, but this tastes super good! We came for Mac n cheese for my nephew who can't have dairy or gluten free, it was surprisingly tasty and not super expensive. Only gave 4 stars because we didn't stay to try anything else. I will be coming back with some friends a different day.

All vegan restaurant with some very different options on the menu. My first experience at an all vegan restaurant and the servers + food + cleanliness were all good. Worth a visit for those willing to try something new. A bit unhappy about the couple of flies inside the restaurant and would have liked to see an insect killer.

Counter culture is definitely a must for vegans! Everything is plant based but it has mostly meals that you would think could only be nonvegan like a Reuben or macaroni and cheese. They make their “cheese” in house and everything is very fresh. They also have vegan ice cream. The vibe is very LGBTQ as well as dog friendly. I will for sure be coming back for breakfast!

1st time trying a vegan restaurant I visited from out of town and decided to look up a vegan restaurant to try. The queso and chips were delicious. Didn't care for the Asian stickers. Buffalo pizza was ok. The maple bakun Seitan burger was yummy. Lavender lemonade yummmm. Kale juice was great.

Even vegetarians and vegans deserve good BBQ! Being one of the highest rated vegan / vegetarian restaurants around with jack fruit on the menu, we had to stop in. A very colorful and bright environment that offers plenty of outdoor seating on the private patio with a very impressive menu. The staff are friendly and personable, and they make a hell of good BBQ jack-fruit. We had the mac and cheese balls for an appetizer, an excellent choice. Not only was everything extremely flavorful, the staff were absolutely great. Cheers!

I really do want to like this place but all the food I get here is extremely underwhelming. This will probably be my last time. I ordered the thanksgiving sandwich and it was just so dry and flavorless. The only saving grace was the gravy which is fantastic. But besides that the bread was dry and added nothing, there was way to much mashed potatoes and the tempeh also did not add much flavor. It was just a textures mush in your mouth.

Stopped in for lunch & had an Everything Bagel. I enjoyed the meal except the portion of the carrots(bacon flavor) was simply a few slices! I asked for a condiment to enjoy my meal but, the upcharge was crazy for a spoon of jam.. it was about $1-$1.25. The meal took over 30 mins for a bagel. My first time was just okay! Hoping for a positive experience next time! I can also share others were complaining about their meal not being served in a timely fashion. I'll stop by for another try! But, don't go hungry or you might turn into Betty. Lol

We got a take out order of the Reuben, bbq jackfruit quesadilla, crab cakes, and Mac n cheese. While we did enjoy the meal here, it was a bit underwhelming. The Reuben definitely stood out as the best item we got. The quesadilla and crab cakes were pretty unflavorful.

Came from Illinois to visit family in Texas and we came here because it seemed like a decent vegan place to eat (my sister and I are both vegan). When we walked in we were seated right away but sat for about 15 minutes before we were even given water. When we tried to order an appetizer when the girl came back with the waters, she said “oh she’ll be right here” and literally ran away. So we waited another 10 minutes for our server to come and place our orders. The nacho appetizer wasn’t that great. My family liked the artichoke dip but it was too spicy for me. I got the tuna melt and I could make a better one at home. The Cesar salad side was awful.. the dressing was horrible. Only good thing was the dessert we got to go, the coconut cream pie was super tasty. But all in all I would not recommend this place to a fellow vegan/anyone. I wish we had more time to explore some more vegan options around Austin. Chicago has great vegan food so maybe I’m just biased.

Seems like a nice place. 2 stars simply because it's vegan but it was severely understaffed. The poor waitress working today seemed to be by herself. It's memorial day and it was very busy. Anyway the waitress had to also be the hostess we she simply could not do both because it was too busy. We waited 50 minutes to get a table and after seeing the poor girl struggling without much if any help and she her create a waiting list with a sharpie and a knapkin. We decided to leave after getting a table. I feel horrible for the waitress, the place was recommended with high praise and failed strictly because it was understaffed on a holiday. No Hostess, come on!
