A great restaurant located in town. La Oaxaqueña has several great dishes to choose from. We were visiting for the holidays and finding a good place to eat can be tricky. This place hits the spot. Coming from the states to wanting to experience authentic Mexican cuisine, it has not disappoint. The guacamole is excellent and if you would like to taste something different try the Oaxacan Guacamole, my husband’s favorite. The veggie omelette was delicious. Everything has good flavor, well balanced and not too over seasoned. A must try are the Tlayudas any of them are delicious, especially the especial. The enmoladas with the black mole were pretty good a little spicy and has a very strong taste of dark chocolate with other spices which for me was very distinct and something new I haven’t tasted before. The empanadas de Amarillo with cheese are really good too… another dish to try are the shrimp tacos and tacos Oaxaqueños… if you like something simple the memelas are simple and fulfilling. Drinks are great, if you like coffee in the morning their Coffee hits the spot with a little kick of cinnamon in it and not too strong just perfect. They also have aguas frescas of tamarind, horchata and Jamaica. Service is really good and the food comes out pretty fast, and you can see when it’s being cooked right on the spot. This has been our favorite restaurant here in Bacalar.

This place is a hidden gem! The food is delicious and the atmosphere is perfect for a family time. I wish I would’ve found this place before so I could try the different items on their menu.

One of THE BEST food experiences I've ever had. Such a wonderful place, incredible food and the prawn tacos so good I ordered them again after finishing the first plate. I cannot describe how perfectly cooked the food is, the balance of flavours, the atmosphere, the setting, the staff. The chef came and spoke to us and was so proud of his restaurant that love his for craft pervades into his food. Prices reasonable, portions amazing and their condiment game is top notch, habanero punch with zingy lime and fresh ingredients. Just joyous, you can't go to Bacalar without visiting La Oaxaquena - that's the new rule.

A rare find! Metate is the epitome of authenticity and kindness! The tortillas are handmade, the salsa is best I’ve ever had and carries deep layers of flavor that compliment the food in surprising and profound ways. Everything was perfect from the attentive staff to the beautifully presented food! Someone really put in some thought in offering a wonderful and heartfelt dinning experience. When traveling I rarely eat in the same place twice, but in this case I will make an exception. It is very affordable, perfectly prepared, and delicious… I want to move here.

One of the best meals I had during my trip to Mexico. So good that we had to visit twice during our 3 days in Bacalar. - Service: they were absolutely professional, friendly, and very attentive. We were curious about how the food were made and asked a lot of questions which they were very happy to explain. - Food: everything was beautifully executed and delicious. Honestly we enjoyed every bite. The chili sauce was nothing like what I ever had before! - Atmosphere: very relaxed and calm. I loved looking at their bar/kitchen where they displayed a range of local ingredients. Simple design but very effective!

I've been travelling around Mexico for more than a week and I can easily say this is the best food I've tried. The mole, pipian and shrimp tacos are delicious. It's such a pity that I've tried this restaurant my last night here, if not I'd definitely come back more than once. If you're in Bacalar don't hesitate to try it, it's amazing! The service is also really good, the waitresses are really nice and attentive.

If you’re in Bacalar — this restaurant is a must! I’m a big foodie and I have travelled abundantly across Mexico: this place is one of the best and most authentic ones. Everything is incredibly fresh and cooked to each order! Chef Maria carries the incredible pre-hispanic food tradition into today. We came by for breakfast but, as we were reading the menu, we were sorry we couldn’t also stay for dinner! The patio is very cozy and beautifully decorated and the restaurant is conveniently located near the town’s center! There are also several vegetarian options. Whenever I’m back in Bacalar, I will definitely be coming back to Metate! Muchas gracias, Maria. Prosperidad a su familia y su negocio!

Food was decent, their special sauce kept on the table is good. But much to my surprise, the prices on the bill were higher than on the menu. When we pointed out the mistake, they made the changes. I'm hoping that it was a genuine mistake, but be careful!

Disappointed. The food was great? Well, yes...but I ordered tlayudas mixta and I'm pretty sure they didn't include everything that should be as stated in their menu (there was no frijoles, tomatoes, rábanos). When they brought the bill, they charged us more than what we ordered. I don't recommend.

Unfortunately, this was our worst dining experience in Mexico. After returning home with an allergic facial reaction and an upset stomach, it was probably for the best that only half of our order actually made it to the table. Before going into details, I want to acknowledge the language barrier, especially my limited Spanish. We explained our order to the waiter about four times, yet only half of it arrived. Drinks: I ordered a fruit water, but received plain mineral water instead. My partner’s beer arrived twice, and none of the cocktails listed on the menu were available. Food: The food we did receive was decent. However, our main dish never arrived. After waiting for quite some time, we realized the order had been forgotten and asked for it to be canceled. The bill: We were only charged for what we consumed, which was fair. However, the waiter did not return with our change for about 10 minutes, and we had to ask for it. While we can’t say for certain that it was related, an allergic reaction and stomach discomfort started shortly after leaving the restaurant. Not the Christmas dinner we wished for!
