Comal Next Door is a great option for a quick but delicious meal. I usually order/pay on their website and the food is ready within 15 minutes! Pickup is super easy and my order is always correct. Parking in the area can be a pain, so consider walking or biking; there is also a BART station close by. While the food here isn’t traditional Mexican fare, it is super tasty and imaginative (Chile relleno burrito!!). They have lots of healthy options for all eaters (omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans), and even sell bottled cocktails like margaritas. If you have more time or want to up your foodie game, consider dining at the OG restaurant, Comal. Enjoy!
The burritos are so tasty and the staff is really nice. I also really like that tips are included in the pricing in a way the staff seems genuinely happy with. And the lime shortbread cookie is awesome.
I have been on the hunt for this place for what feels like forever. Simple, good, authentic, local Mexican food ever since I've moved into the area. So here it goes. Ordered a chicken burrito, no crema, refried beans with the pico de gallo add-on. It was just perfect. Imo burritos should not be served with non-refried beans because they fall out of the tortilla way to easily and are not usually as tasty in this package. Secondly, the pico de gallo was key here in keeping it tasting fresh. Onto the meat. This is where most other restaurants nearby fail here. It's usually too dry and basically flavorless. The anchiote marinade shines though here and the meat is perfectly tender, it's perfect. Next up is there cheese, there's lots of it on here and unproportioned well making it interesting with great cheesy goodness. There are french fries in here and honestly they were totally not needed but they didn't get in the way of me enjoying all of the deliciousness here. They used them sparingly and that is a great thing. The tortilla itself was nice and fluffy, not sure if it's actually homemade here but anyroad that is completely irrelevant. It does not detract from the flavor and that's good enough for me. The salsa provided moisture and deepened the flavor. It says it's chipotle but it's unlike other ones I've tried because the flavor of that particular chile is not overly poignant. Mostly it's there to accentuate the smokey flavor of the meal and it does just that. If I had to provide some criticism it would simply be that there was not enough spiciness to the dish so maybe some salsa on the side would rectify that. It is rare to find such flavors and this place succeeds on so many levels it reminded me why I love Mexican cuisine. Will definitely need to revisit and soon.
I enjoyed several vegetarian starters and the chiles rellenos. The flan with kumquat was great. There were a few Aguas frescos but I would have enjoyed a non alcoholic beer. My friends seemed to enjoy their meat dishes and cocktails.
The dude in the front with long hair has honestly provided the best customer service I have ever experienced. The food is absolutely on point and it is always prepared fast and correct. Best Burritos in Berkeley no doubt about it 💯
Everything is good but the standout tacos for me are the al pastor and the veggie (corn, zucchini, & poblano chile). The carnitas had a little too much orangey flavor for my tastes but it is still pretty good. The Mollete is like a delicious bean french-bread pizza (but much better tasting than that probably sounds). The salsas are all tasty including the habanero hot sauce bottles sitting out on the tables. The prices are basically the same as Chipotle but the quality is much higher.
I love their burritos and sometimes will get their chicken or tofu burritos for our staff/office meals. Thank you for making such amazing and solid food every single time!
As much as I am a born and raised east bay person, I will admit that SF wins the burrito competition. Or… I would have admitted it, until I tried the carnitas burrito from Comal Next Door. Now I have no culinary reason to go to the city and please note, I am not crying about it. Thank you, Comal Next Door.
Fresh Mexican food for a decent price. The chips are a little high prices but the dishes are fair. When I want something a little better tasting than chipotle....this is it!
Great food but very pricey.
Got the frozen chicken enchiladas. Heat em up in the oven for 40 minutes and you've got a great meal. When i bought them each portion looked kinda small but once they're cooked, you've got a gut buster on your hands. Throw in a side of chips and guacamole and a shot of tequila and you'll be in heaven! 😁
Tasty food with quick service. Affordable prices. Enjoyed everything we ordered: Chile Relleno bowl, chips/salsa/guacamole, mini quesadillas, rice and beans, and an al pastor taco. Topped off the meal with a lime corn shortbread cookie. Highly recommend! Look forward to trying more dishes!
Best burrito in Berkeley. Although the menu has fewer options than a traditional taqueria; the quality food here is outstanding. If the menu options suit your taste this is the best place you can go.
My favorite is their Chile Relleno Burrito. I don’t know how they pack so much cheese and flavor even in to the last bite. Most burritos are just uncooked tortilla at the end. This one is crispy, flavorful and cheesy till the last bite. Doesn’t make me feel like I overate, which most burritos can easily do. The chips are one of the best. If you’re vegetarian (like me) get the Chile Relleno burrito and Chips and Guacamole.
This place is great for a quick lunch. I tried their Molette, it was very flavorful! Highly recommend it.They have some pretty good vegetarian options. Would def like to revisit again and try more!
Amazing food and great service. Recommend the asparagus and guacamole. Fish tacos were solid but not the best dish we ate.
Prices were decent. Food was good. Their few cocktail drinks were nice. Small space. Didn't even notice it existed for 6 months... It works. I've never gone to comal but now that I've had this I want to try!
Acceptable choice if your group is struggling to decide on a place to go to for lunch

OKAY. SERIOUSLY. THE SALAD. the ingredients are SO FRESH! and they pile it IN! Everything in my bowl is brightly colored. (Have you ever gotten a salad and the lettuce is white and it's like two things in there and disappointing?) SHOUTOUT TO THE CHEFS. 🤌🏻
I’ve eaten here for lunch 1-2 times a week for the past two years - Comal Nextdoor is worth every penny. While it’s slightly more expensive than most food in downtown Berkeley, the key word is “slightly.” The portions are massive — I could happily split a burrito with someone else. The service is also really fast. Today, I got my burrito in maybe 2 minutes, I’d say the average is 4-7 minutes. Can’t recommend the chicken burrito highly enough, either.
Love Comal the restaurant and have been going there for years, but only recently tried out Comal Next Door. As expected, the food was as good as it's namesake 💯 I had the fried chicken torta which was great. Chicken was juicy and fried perfectly. The roll was quite soft and fluffy but also didn't fall apart.
This is my Platonic ideal of a burrito. The potatoes, eggs, and beans are perfectly cooked. The homemade chorizo really takes it a step above. And if you eat in, their fantastic hot sauce is just the cherry on top!
Great food but very pricey.

The burrito I had was fresh and tasty but it was very expensive. I would typically rather get a burrito from a regular taqueria, but we wanted a restaurant near the Berkeley Rep with outdoor seating and this place fit the bill.
The food is pretty good. Maybe not $17 for just a burrito good though.
Food is a little pricey for a quick bite lunch menu in Berkeley, but the food is amazing. They also serve up your order fairly fast with the exception of the buttermilk chicken torta. That is understandable though since they fry up the chicken only once an order is placed. Is it an amazing torta. The chicken is crispy and juicy and the slaw is flavorful but not overpowering.
The tacos is better good compared to other tacos I have had in the area although it is a bit pricier.

Had high hopes based on reviews and photos Average at best. Chicken fired to a crisp. Burrito bowl order botched. Ordered spinach and mushrooms w beef. Received overcooked/dried carnitas??
The food is delicious but this is the second tine I clearly asked for light cheese on the bean / cheese burrito To go- got home and saw a sticker that said ADD CHEESE. The employee who took my order assured me it would be prepared just as I requested it so kinda a drag. I understand mistakes are made but it is still frustrating to pay for what high end burrito, bring it home and not to be able to eat it! And yes if there is a next time i will check food before I walk out the door.
This place would have got a better review if I did have huge chunks of fat in the taco. Leaves me with less than half meat on the tacos. Other than that the meat is tender and good flavor. The jalapeños are HOT and I like spicy foods, but those were Hot.
It’s the “fast food” version of the full service restaurant next door. Our group had some tacos and burritos that left us reasonably happy.
Went there twice so far, ordered the bowl al pastor both times. On the first try the portion received (to go) was quite small and lacking lettuce. The second bowl was more appropriate given the price. Probably birthing pains on the first week of opening. Both times it was excellent! Food arrived within 5 minutes of order. They also have interesting drinks but again with a significant markup.
Is it me or does it look like my rellino was cut in half? Normally when I order this it takes up 1/2 the bowl! Dissapointed today :(

I think it's unethical to add the $1.99 "Restaurant Operations Fee" to the posted price. The posted price should be the total price except for tax which we usually know about. Overpriced food with the fee.
Ordered chicken burrito to go. Portions are generous but the chicken was too salty. The beans had a rich homemade flavor but again a bit too salty. Meal was okay but I’d be willing to give them a second shot.

Rude staff. Used a Grubhub gift card for pickup and they basically told me to not order from them in the future. Explained I was using a gift card and it was a weird interaction overall. I’m all for supporting businesses outside of 3rd parties, but don’t accept Doordash / Grubhub if you don’t want to handle those orders. Other than the poor service the food was very underwhelming. Was surprised that I regularly get much better tacos on the east coast.
Food is mediocre and overpriced. Few vegan options. Dirty tables. Mandatory 15% service charge even though service is minimal (you order at a counter and clean your own table)
Really tired of included service fees. Yes. It was posted. The sign couldn't be any smaller. Didn't notice till I looked at the receipt. "Service" does not mean "Take my money and drop my food without a word, "Thank you" or even a Berkeley smirk." $16 to $20 an hour isn't enough? Your burritos aren't anything to write home about. Won't be back.
I’m a keep it lit! I would’ve gave it one star, but the food is actually good and has been almost every time I come here the biggest issue I’ve noticed is the lack of courtesy from the employees, greet them positively they give you blank stares, say thank you, they give you blank stares, say, have a good day, they don’t even respond just more blank stares. OK fine nobody requires you to be courteous to one another however, I did tip you and I will no longer be tipping anyone in that restaurant I don’t know if it’s just me but it’s been every single visit here I haven’t been to other locations besides Berkeley but Berkeley location CND no chill vibes 👎🤷♂️ all in all, I did go there for the food and not the service so if you’re looking for some decent Mexican food in downtown Berkeley, they are good for that. Just don’t expect anybody to be nice to you
Ordered a burrito and the girl seemed irritated. First time trying this place out and noticed it was empty early Tuesday evening. $21 for a burrito with undercooked beans and a can soda is robbery. I wouldn't come back.... I can see why they were empty tonight.
The burrito I bought was over $13, but was barely 5 inches long. So small. No frills ordered with it. Plus the tip I left had me paying over $16 for a tiny and just okay tasting burrito. I wanted to help out a local small business, but damn, I feel so ripped off
The service was cold, and the food was microwaved. Chilie relleno was soggy and buried in a salad. The lettuce was crisp and fresh. And the guacamole was tasty. Sadly I prefer Chipotle... And I really wanted to like this location 😞
Talk about a soggy bottom. We ordered a bunch of tacos and a salad. The tortillas were the wettest I’ve ever had in my life. The veggies were bland overall. The mushroom tacos had more flavor and the barilla was decent. Oh but the nightmare of the juicy tortilla was so disappointing. Also, the salad dressing was tangy and sour, but not in a good way. The East Bay demands better taco game than this y’all.

Super unimpressed. Lackadaisical staff, but you pay 15% mandatory tip. $6 for tiny tacos. Spent $20 for three of them and left hungry. They were ok, the chicken is the best, carnitas and al pastor were mediocre.

They have not responded to my phone calls about an order made incorrectly. We had to toss the dish because our family member can't eat two ingredients that they put in the meal. The order slip and the tags were correct; whomever plated it, didn't follow instructions. Too bad we wanted to like Comal. We traveled 45 minutes to get dinner from them based on a family member's recommendation.
I am allergic to eggs, and when asked the waiter - not once but twice, thrice, he confirmed that there were no eggs in the dish I ordered. He apparently also "checked" with the kitchen. After eating, I got extremely sick...and then another waiter later confirmed that there were eggs in the dish. I am still recovering from stomach problems. I guess they will tell you anything you want to hear to get your order!
I called the store before placing the DoorDash order and clearly stated that I did not want any hot sauce and left my DoorDash name. As a result, the food I received was still spicy and I couldn't eat it at all. Now I called them but they were closed. I had to order my dinner from another restaurant again, which wasted my $27 and had a terrible night.
I rarely write reviews but I was so disappointed. I ordered the caesar and the fried chicken torta and was really hungry after a long day. The torta bread was soggy. OK, fine, I can deal with a little soggy bread. But the meat was inedible. It was chewy, off-color, and had a weird taste. It seemed to have gone bad. I could tell it was low quality. It was pretty much inedible and I basically had to throw out my whole sandwich---really frustrating given how much they charge. The salad was very disappointing as well. The quality of the lettuce was on its last legs. Many of the leaves were starting to turn red. Both dishes not only lacked flavor, but the ingredients were not fresh and on their last legs. Never doing either Comal again. Do not come here.
Avoid them they charge restaurants operating$3.75 fee even on Togo there Mexican food is mediocre even for Berkeley case. Go the Tacos Sinaloa or las Cabana it cheaper by $5-7 same for Sinaloa
