Avis sur Hex & Co. Broadway
Hex & Co is a fantastic game store and cafe with a fun community and workers who care about the games and gaming events that they run. Highly recommended for families, students, or anyone else looking to have fun. Part of what makes Hex & Co great is that their employees are unionized, which means they have a reason to engage with and build the communities at the store, particularly for Magic: the Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer 40K, and others. If you're looking for a fun time, I couldn't think of a better way than also supporting their labor and bargaining efforts.
I come here to play some of the TCG events. Jeremy is amazing! Very helpful and on top of things! He runs everything smoothly while also doing the other numerous tasks he’s assigned.
Love this place. A lot of game/hobby shops have bad customer service and terrible clientele. Not here. Staff is enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Food comes out accurate and fresh. Beer selection isn't huge but what they have is terrific. Oh, and its much more spacious than other game cafes. Good luck playing Twilight Struggle in a downtown broom closet where your table gets jostled over and over. And if you are into tabletop RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons, then you should definitely come check the place out.
This place is an amazing little cafe/luchenette where you can pay $10 and play your hearts desire worth of tabletop games. Seating in the back allows for about 50 people and it gets to capacity on a Sunday. Fun for adults and children and I even saw some dates. Games are available for purchase as well as gaming accessories. Staff is cool and helpful. Had a great time there.
The Café/Pub offerings here are good, serviceable. Wider range of drink offerings than I expected for a place of that size. I didn't see the board game library myself, but based on what my friends brought back to the table and what I saw on other tables, they've got solid staple games and some variety as well. We didn't get to play in the D&D social, but from what I saw the vibe was good. It was a quite crowded evening. There were plenty of seats and tables as long as you get there early enough. There is some concern about handling drinks around the games and on the less sturdy tables. Just be careful with full cups?
A family use to play D&D here on the weekends and one of the in house GM is an amazing writer. Plus the workers are unionized! Recommend this place for anyone who wants to stand with labor and have a great time with fond memories.
Great place to game, meet new people and enjoy a game from so many different genres! The staff are very polite and helpful. The food they serve is good for what it is (personal-sized pizza, chicken tenders, tater tots and several types of desserts). Plus, they have a great, large selection of beers on tap and in the can!
This is a cool little spot. Come in play games have some coffee or a beer. My friends and I went in to play a new game. We only 3 players we were hoping to be able to add a 4th there but it seems like at least around lunch time most of the people there were in full groups and it wasn't the place to try to start a game with strangers. I will definitely be going back I had fun. I enjoyed the environment. And their game library is huge. If you are looking for a fun date idea this a good nerd choice. I think they also have some organized play nights for MTG and maybe some other games too. I'll update this after I have been a couple more times with a better review.
I've been here a bunch of times and I'm a huge fan of this place! They have tons of games available to play and a reasonable cover to stay. There are also regular events and classes which have all been great. The food and drink selection is good and they people working here are the best. I've always received excellent service, the staff knows what they're doing and can offer great insight and advice on any gaming purchases. Lastly, they do also have a great selection of games and gaming supplies. I can't think of a better example of a local business with supporting!
Since this location opened, my friends and I have visited at least ten times. You might look at the food and think it is pretty meager, but the prices are very fair, and cater to the fact that most people are only looking for a snack. The game selection is so large as to be intimidating, and it can be difficult to find any one game you are looking for, but in the end you would much prefer to have an overabundance of choice over the alternative. You do get the sense that the workers are either overworked or constantly harassed, because many interactions have an air of "please don't be a problem, I am going to lose it." Also the beer selection is fantastic! One thing I would caution against for the frugal consumer is reservations. A reservation fee is 50% greater than walk-in, and almost every time I have come to Hex & Co, walk-in has been possible. This has led to situations where we had a reservation for a table of 8, showed up to a half-full cafe, and had to pay $40 more just for planning our visit responsibly.
Play a favorite board game or learn a new one. Hundreds of games to choose from. Weekly tournaments. Snack bar that includes a great selection of beer or coffee/tea. Nice space with lots of table. Friendly staff. Will play her again.
I love Hex & Co, and I love the staff there. I appreciate how knowledgeable the staff are about a wide variety of games, including Magic, D&D, and board games. Definitely in support of the unionizing workers, and I will be into the store more if ownership supports workers needs during the Union organizing effort. This is a great store and great community location, and it will become even greater as workers are better supported.
Great store with great employees. Love to draft magic: the gathering here (really good prize support) and play their wide selection of board games. Love that the workers there are unionized, and recommend it to anyone who wants to support labor.
Great spot for a board game night! You can also order coffee or other beverages. There’s a group on MeetUp that goes to the uptown location every Saturday and Sunday, in case you want to try new stuff with new folks. The selection of games is great and the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. Totally recommend!
Of the plethora of coffee places in the area, this one is definitely my favorite and the best. Everyone is so friendly here, and the coffee/snacks are excellent. The cold brew is strong and delicious, and the apple crumb cake was heated up and that was so good (the ratio of crumb to cake was optimal). Had I time I would have sat and read (welcoming space) or browsed the games. The beer tap looks phenomenal, too! Can't wait to find an excuse to go back.
Great, small cafe with an enormous collection of board games. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is very home-y and relaxed. The food is decent. You can reserve a table for groups, although you must pay in full to book the reservation. But there is no time limit to how long you can stay. This is definitely a great place for families and groups of friends looking to wind down and have fun playing board games.
Very fun to do with friends for a few hours. $10 for entry, money well spent. Beers are a little pricey, but food and non-alcoholic beverages are fairly priced. Sauces are an extra $1. The food is good, but this is more of a game place than a food place. Great selection of board and card games. Pretty much all the board and card games you would play you can buy. You can study / do homework here but I probably wouldn’t just due to the noise and excitement of games that’ll be around. Overall, great experience. Will definitely be coming back. I would want as many locations as possible.
It's a great place to play and find new games, great place to go with kids, if you like games, which we do, so it's fabulous. This isn't a restaurant, it's a boardgame place that has some basic menu items and good coffee.
We had a wonderful time coming here and playing in an in-person Magic event for the first time! Stephen was so kind about explaining the rules of the event to us even though he was busy running around managing all of the games that were going on and he made us feel very welcome. The venue was also very comfortable and spacious.
Excellent place to play board games. This place has a wide variety, afterschool program for kids, and it is a friendly social place. You will find just about any game you are looking for and college students get in $5. This is my hobby and I have been here several times. Also the prices for food is reasonable. The prices for beer is also good. You can come here with some friends and have a blast. I would suggest anyone who loves games and wants to have a good time to check this place out.
Awesome place for all the best in RPGs, card and board games, large selections of items for everyone's gaming needs. Good cafe style food & drinks, as well as some craft brews available. Lots of tables for players to enjoy some great time playing their favorite games.
An extremely friendly staff and good assortment of games. I went for a DND Origins Seminar and had a lot of fun meeting new people. The instructor was extremely nice and did a great job explaining the basics of character creation and gameplay.
I’m a pretty regular patron of Hex and co and I’ve always had an excellent time due to the care and knowledge of the staff. They make us feel welcome and really know what makes the community tick to keep everyone happy and having fun. The only thing holding me back from recommending this store is the lack of support from ownership of the workers Union. They deserve to be recognized for their hard work and compensated appropriately for it.
Can't say enough nice things about this place. They even have gluten free burger buns!
Went here to get some breakfast and was amazed. What a cool place for gamers and coffee. Needed to be in the area again in the evening, had a beer flight that was fantastic. Broad selection of beers on tap. Staff were gracious and friendly. Loved it.
This place is awesome! It really ticks all the boxes. They've got an excellent selection of games and accessories for sale. The $10 cost to grab a table and play games is super reasonable considering you can stay for as long as you want. The beer selection is excellent and the snack foods hit the spot, at great prices too. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The general vibe was fun and welcoming. I felt very at home and look forward to coming here often in the future!
I’ve been a regular since 2021, great place for Magic the Gathering. The workers are great, serving good food and great drinks, plus there is always a helpful and knowledgeable person around — really important when you’re playing Commander and some weird rules question comes up. (It always does.) Great to know that the workers here and other Hex locations are **unionized**! They deserve fair treatment (or better). I highly recommend visiting for board games, D&D, whatever — you can have fun while standing shoulder to shoulder with members of a burgeoning labor movement!
The game selection for sale is pretty decent. The game library is huge, and the tables are decent size. Some games may not be really feasible within the space though. The staff is a mix of very knowledgeable and "im here because I got bills", but all around pleasant. A fun visit, always.
This place is such a vibe. Jeremy is awesome. The private gaming areas feel so intimate and are decorated nicely. Can't wait to come back - my friends and I are already planning for some D&D sessions here!
I work for Gigamic and visit a lot of board game cafes. Hex and co is excellent on all fronts. They were nearly capacity on a Monday afternoon. I had a latte and a blackberry danish. The danish was light and crispy, not too sweet. My latte was smooth and just lightly bitter. The staff is friendly and the manager even gave me a personal hello!
I started going to hex and co regularly when I moved to NYC to meet new people and play D&D, and I love it! I do weekly D&D sessions at the west side location and come in on weekend nights every so often for a friend game night. The atmosphere is great and I love being able to play nerdy games with my friends while also getting to have snacks and a beer or 2! The staff is awesome and so friendly, especially Jeremy who is my favorite to come and chat with between games, they are always so helpful and are one of the reasons I look forward to every Hex visit! Definitely recommend checking it out!
Amazing place, great people, such fun vibes and variety of stuff. Got food and milkshakes and played some two player games, talked to the staff for suggestions, bought dice and a couple books to do with games.
This place is great. Anytime I'm in the city I stop here for lunch. The staff is friendly, prices are cheap, service is quick. It's easy to get drawn into watching people play board games. I wish we had a place like this in the city I went to college in (budget friendly with a fun atmosphere). I cannot think of another business I look forward to visiting like I do this one. If you're visiting the city put this place on your bucket list. It doesn't disappoint.
Great place for board games!! I always have a great time with friends here. The games are in great condition and they have a large variety. You pay one fee and can stay as long as you want. They have beer on tap and snacks for you to enjoy as well. The staff is amazing and friendly. I left my purse there accidentally, and they kept it in their lost&found for over a week. Highly recommend!
So my friend, wife and I were vacationing in NYC and found this place on Google. Went out of our way to go to this Cafe! Right from the start we fell in love with this place! The guy at the counter was super cool with us and the staff were really chill and helpful! They helped us through the whole process, the food was delicious, the atmosphere was so warm and welcoming! The only thing we noticed was some of the games were missing pieces but there is NO short of GAMES. We LOVED this place! We drove from out of state to come and it was worth every penny and every second. We told our friends about this place and to make the trip to Harlem to spend a couple of hours at the Hex & Company!!! We wish there was a Hex & Company where we live. Thank you again guys for a lovely time!!!
Nice place to play Magic and other board games! I went here with some friends and the staff was really helpful picking a game that fit the group. They even helped us with some rules questions! I found out recently that the workers are unionizing, which is great. If the workers are supported, the store will remain my go to gaming cafe.
I recently went for the first time with a bunch of friends, and we had an absolute blast. Jeremy, and the crew took stellar care of us, and variety of games to play made it a lively evening. Will definitely return
If you love table top games, card games, and D&D, it is a fantastic place to be. Atmosphere is great, mood is always chill, and everyone who works there, that I have encountered, is absolutely cool. It honestly reminds me of a cardshop that use to be around called "Netural Ground" Absolutely Great place to be and this place definitely gives me that same vibe. Bring yourself and/or friends and just chill, play some games, and have a good time.
I came here last when they were at the old place and let me tell you, they deserve this new place. It makes me so happy to see people having fun playing board games. Even though I'm an avid gamer, this is such an easy place to recommend. It's super fun, bring your friends or your family!
I forgot to ask their name, but the person working the front register on Oct 2 2025 around 6:50 pm went above and beyond to help me with an order I had placed. Phenomenal service, and a super charming atmosphere.
Had an amazing date with my husband. He's big into board games and so he thought it would be fun for me. They had walls of games that we don't even own. It was amazing and intimidating. I didn't know which game to play. The back room had an after school program for young kids who were learning how to play games. It was very wholesome.
Hex & Co is a great place to play board games with friends or other game lovers. They have a huge selection and the staff is very helpful. They do offer cafe items, beer, and wine for purchase. I had a delicious hot apple cider and had to stop myself from getting another. I would highly recommend to those returning to board game playing after not playing for years and those who consistently play. Additionally, they have games for sale if you want to add to your collection. Everyone is welcome!
I usually go to their UES location but my friend lives in the area and this location was a lot closer and I almost like this location better. Always a lot of fun.
During our visit today, however, it was snowing and the space was extremely cold due to a lack of heat, which made it uncomfortable to stay for long periods. Since this is a café where people sit and play games for hours, temperature control really makes a difference in the overall experience.
Hex & Company by Union Square is a solid spot for board games and a place we generally enjoy spending time at. The game selection is extensive, the setup is straightforward, and it’s easy to settle in for a few hours of play. During our visit today, however, it was snowing and the space was extremely cold due to a lack of heat, which made it uncomfortable to stay for long periods. Since this is a café where people sit and play games for hours, temperature control really makes a difference in the overall experience. The food and drinks are decent but on the pricier side for the quality. Nothing stood out as bad, but the value doesn’t quite match the cost. That said, Hex & Company is clearly focused on the board game experience rather than dining, so this wasn’t entirely unexpected. The gameplay fee itself is reasonable at $15 for three hours, especially considering the wide variety of games available. Overall a good place for board games, but the lack of heat on a cold day and the pricing of food and drinks held this visit back from being a more comfortable experience.
I recently returned playing Magic the Gathering - Commander (EDH). They have an excellent organizer, Mal. He always is joyful and makes the nights interesting. I really enjoy the mixup of the "extra" prize through the night other than the normal random packs we win. It has been only positive experiences for me. I hope they know how much we appreciate having a space like this. I don't know much about the food quality, but it smells good!
Discovered this place while looking for a quick coffee spot and impressed with the amount of board games. Vibe is chill. Service is friendly. And the coffee is good.
Had a wonderful date here with my girlfriend! Jeremy was so welcoming and helpful in recommending a game for us to play. So nice to have this in the neighborhood!
The staff is very nice and the interior design is so amazing and cosy. There is a very large variety of board games to choose from and there is space for a lot of people to sit together.
I love the atmosphere in this place and Faith the manager has such a great vibe. Food is great and the variety of boardgames feels endless. Definitely recommend!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Hex & Company is a fantastic spot in New York for both coffee lovers and board game enthusiasts. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, with a unique vibe that's perfect for anyone who enjoys gaming. The coffee here is top-notch, making it worth every visit. What makes Hex & Company stand out is its dedication to board gamers. They regularly host activities and competitions, which adds a lively energy to the place. Just be aware that during these events, seating might be limited—but trust me, the experience is worth it! Whether you're there for the games, the coffee, or just to soak in the great ambiance, Hex & Company is a must-visit.
Neat spot! I came earlier in the morning around 9 and appreciated the gentle mood music playing overhead so that I could work on some things on my laptop. As the day progressed toward lunch time it seemed like the music got louder but maybe it was just the additional people that were visiting! Seems like a cool place to plat board games with friends. I would come again!
What a really cool idea! We visited from Maryland with our daughter and son in law and look forward to many more visits. The selection of board and card games is incredible, I would never have guessed there was that may games in the entire world! Must be thousands on their shelves to choose from to play while enjoying a beer with friends or family. I recommend NOT drinking until you find the game you really like and learn the rules of that game! Only after getting started should you go grab a beer. A little alcohol goes a long way to making the rules of a new game harder to understand!!! 😉 Price to play was inexpensive. Their beer selection is not huge but they have something for everyone, it is decent beer and well priced. They have food but it is not something to rave about. None of it was bad. Think of it as something to snack on while playing games. Pretzel Bites and chicken tenders were what we ordered. The atmosphere is loud and fun as everyone around you is having a great time. They also have games for sale if you find a game you really enjoyed. This is certainly a place to go if you like beer and board/card games.
Board game cafe, what a fantastic concept! Such a fun experience for only $10. I can't wait to come back again. Many many board games to choose from. You can stay as long or as little as you like. We ended up playing two board games in the nearly three hours we were there. Drinks are also offered, both alcoholic and nonalcoholic, on tap and in the fridge.
Nice cafe! If you like playing board games or card games of any kind this is a cool place for you. If you are planning on having a large group make sure the group arrives at the same time and have some type of plan in play for what kind of board game caters to the group. I also felt very closterfobic because it can get pretty loud and the tables are very close together. If you are looking for a good time with friends, co workers or family you need to check this place out. Also the staff are awesome and all the refreshments and drinks are decently priced.
Staff is friendly and the place is very charming. Decent board game collection and food/drink menu. I really enjoyed this place, the only reason I took off a star is that a $10 USD entrance fee is pretty pricey. I've been to a few other board game cafes and this the highest cover I've seen by far.
This is a fun place to play board games with friends. I went with a group and was surprised that they charged $10 per person to sit down and had additional charges for drinks/snacks. Important to note that they do have a Columbia student $5 discount on weeknights only. In the end, while the price was a little hefty, the board game collection was incredibly extensive and I had a fun time. It's definitely a great way to spend time with friends and I intend to return.
I can't rate food because I didn't have any while here, so this review is solely based on gaming. The selection here is decently curated. I discovered a couple new games I had never seen before and nor had the person with whom I played who is a self-proclaimed board game fanatic. While they didn't have a playable copy of one of the games we wanted to play, they did have it in stock for sale, so it wasn't like this game was off their radar. Take that as you will, but I think that if you're selling a game, you should probably have it in your inventory of playable games. The atmosphere is decent, but the tables can be on the small side for some of the more extravagant games or for larger parties not holding a reservation. When I was there, some children gaming event or party was happening and I am happy to say that they did not disrupt the environment. The biggest pro is how cheap it is to play (especially if you bring a student ID). If you only intend to play one game with a large enough group of people, the cost might not make sense, but if you plan to try out several different games it is most definitely worth it. One nice thing to note is that if you need to leave for a while (grab a meal not from this establishment, catch a class at Columbia, etc.) you can return later with no re-entry fee. Their games for sale are quite pricey, but this is New York and it is a small business trying to stay afloat. If you are bored and in the area, definitely check this place out.
I like it the food wasn’t allat, I had the pizza it was pretty expensive and not the best so I recommend eating something before going in of you’re hungry. I went on a Monday so we didn’t have to pay hourly or whatever thing it is. Basically we payed once and we could spend as much time as we’d like there, it cost like 10 dollars? And with the student discount it’s 8. There’s lots of games and the atmosphere good I recommend going there to play some games with your friends, it’s nice.
Excellent board game cafe. The size alone places this board game cafe above the rest. Although crowded on certain event nights, there are a large variety of tables and games to choose from, as well as fun decor like themed posters and suits of armor. Your student ID will get you $5 off of the entry fee, and they serve a decent selection of food and drinks, including alcohol. Additionally, the community it attracts is very inclusive in terms of age and even accessibility - staff is accommodating and friendly.
I had a great time playing a murder mystery game with friends for over 4 hours! I recommend going on days when school are in-session to avoid extra noise or crowds, but even with the extra people, it was enjoyable. Great place to spend time - especially when the weather isn’t great outside!
Food was a bit pricey, and my dip that i got car frozen but they fixed it no problem. Love the environment and the room.
An amazing place. Especially for students, who only have to pay $5 for entry. You can stay as long as you want and there is an abundance of games here. It is also worthwhile to note that not just the games themselves, but expansion packs if any are available as well. A great place worth your money if you are a student.
If you love board games or logic games, this is a place you will really enjoy. This popular hangout has a wide selection of games to play and to to purchase. To play at the tables, the cost is $10 and your time is unlimited. There are also beverages and snacks for purchase.
Hex & Company: A Game of Two Halves Hex & Company, a quirky blend of board game cafe and retail store, is a delightful haven for gamers and coffee enthusiasts alike. The eclectic decor and inviting atmosphere create a unique and enjoyable experience. The coffee, a caffeinated concoction that rivals the best of them, was a perfect pick-me-up. And the cheesecake pumpkin slice? A divine dessert that would make even the most discerning pastry chef swoon. The staff, for the most part, were friendly and helpful, guiding us through the labyrinth of board games and coffee options. However, our experience took a turn for the worse on a second visit later that day when a staff member, perhaps having a particularly rough day or perhaps just a bit too invested in board game etiquette, confronted one of our group members for browsing the games without prior permission and renting. It was a bit like a librarian scolding a child for touching a book. While it's understandable that the establishment has rules to ensure a fair and enjoyable experience for all patrons, the way the situation was handled could have been more tactful. A gentler approach, perhaps with a friendly reminder about the rental process, would have been more effective than the hostile approach we received from her. Despite this minor hiccup, Hex & Company remains a charming place to spend an afternoon. Just remember to play by the rules, check with the staff before touching anything, or risk the wrath of the board game gods.
Friendly staff, good selection of games (to play or purchase) and delicious food options -- I really enjoy the hot honey chicken sandwich. Updating this to include the tuna melt and the tater tots as delicious too! Great range of alcoholic, soft and hot beverages available -- the hot chocolate and the cider are both really good. $10 per person to play all day or $5 each for students, which is reasonable but it's a shame they don't have a minimum food spend for free play offer. They are however, happy to fill your reusable cup for the cost of a small sized drink!
Lots of board game options, inviting interior, great space, friendly staff. Everything checks out. If I'm being honest the food is not it. Sounds good on a menu, tastes like it shouldn't have sounded so good because man average is about the best of any plate here. Come for games and some drinks.
Do I love that there's a board game Cafe here? Absolutely. Did a single staff member do everything in her power to ruin our experience? Also yes. The short blonde lady tried to sabotage our experience in every way. When we called, she told us there were no tables, but when we came anyway there were many. The other staff were super nice When we ordered food, she just didn't bring it. Other staff helped us out. When we asked for help finding games, she told us "tough luck finding anything". Would recommend The Uncommons over this place. Avoid that short blonde woman.
Great coffee, drinks and atmosphere with a super cool Idea. The people playing games (Maybe DnD? Didn't check) behind us were super kind and friendly. Also the facilities were very clean and well taken care of! I really like this shop but after a half hour of working on our laptops my girlfriend and I were asked to leave kind of rudely. We were just told that only board game players were allowed to sit inside, which seemed slightly contradictory as others were reading or on their laptops as well. Just posting to inform others who might want to use this as a place to get work done on the weekends.
My friend and I ordered smoothies. We waited about 20 minutes before asking for an update. The man at the kitchen had no idea about our order and once the cashier who took our order intervened they let us know that they were “working on it.” An hour and a half passes. Still no smoothies. We approached them, wanting to ask for a refund. They apologized and said they had made an announcement that they couldn’t make our smoothies because we hadn’t said what milk we wanted in them. We never heard this announcement. The place was really loud the whole time, we didn’t hear a thing. They could’ve easily found our table because the place is small, the back area was closed, and the cashier recognized my face and order from last time. They made no genuine effort to tell us they were not ever going to make our smoothies. If we hadn’t found them to ask for a refund, they would’ve just pocketed our money. This was so careless of them and a terrible lack of communication. And I can’t help but think this was racially coded and they wouldn’t have treated another type of customer with this kind of disrespect. Everyone else got their order, and the excuse they gave us was silly.
The stores have nicely constructed interior spaces, but the experience is hampered by a generally confusing and unorganized retail and play space, as well as disinterested employees. I visited both the Broadway locations, both were fairly empty at the times I had gone. I was barely greeted or engaged with by the employees who were more interested in their own conversations and didn't seem to be doing too much- I don't need tending too in retail stores, but it would be nice if they felt a little more approachable. The retail shelves looked disheveled and unorganized- some games looked in poor condition for new. There are no price tags on anything as well. You have to bring the game up to the register to see the price, which I had never experienced in a game store before. This is shocking because lots of games range in a variety of prices and seems like a waste of staff's time to confirm a price for you if the store is busy, and awkward for the customer if they decide it's not the amount they were anticipating on spending. The play space's games look beaten, battered, and like they were thrown on the shelves. I can't comment on my experience in actually playing at these locations, but if I were to pay to sit down and play, it would be nice to pull out a game in reasonable condition. I've been in plenty of board game cafes and stores with play spaces and am disappointed that these are, largely, the experiences that New York City has to offer. Maybe it is an off week for them, but I hope it improves in the future.
Honestly I love this place, but I can't accept the money gouging reservation policy. I've always been a walk-in so I never ran into this issue until recently, but when I tried to reserve a table, I found out it's $15 per person to reserve. You don't need to pay to play the games once you get there, but it's $10 to walk in and play... I wouldn't mind this if the extra $5 was a "deposit" of sorts for holding the table, and it got refunded or subtracted from your tab once they know you won't be a no-show, but the way it currently works it's an effective $5 non-refundable purchase of... a reservation. I've never paid to make a reservation in my life, I don't know how they justify this policy but, until they change this ridiculous rule, they've lost a customer
Was disappointed that I spent $15 to only play board games for two hours. The staff knew they had an event at 6:30 pm and didn’t think to mention that we would only have 2 ish hours to play before they kicked us out despite the 11 pm closure. Also very cold inside and there was no heater where we were sat (literally next to the door on a 23F day!!!)
I went here to check the place out since I was interested in the DnD origin package. I had questions. When I asked two workers that were seated in front of the back area. The male worker spoke up and looked annoyed with me and gave off the vibe that he wanted me to gtfo. Mind you. I did apologized for interrupting his attempt at workplace romance. (had his arm around his coworker and she was being affectionate back). I didn't ask all the questions I wanted to ask since I felt really uncomfortable with how he curt he was. So I said thank you and apologized again for interrupting. I would have ask someone else for help but I saw no one else. The cashier was nice and but at that point I simply wanted to go home. I was a bit bothered on why they have one person to handle the RPG stuff. Especially if they're not there. Someone should be available to handle that stuff when the guy in charge isn't there. Due to this experience I won't be coming back. Not even to buy something. My drink didn't taste good and there are bigger places with more selections when it comes to traditional gaming merch. I'm sure others had a good experience here, but my first impression tells me that I'm not wanted as a customer.
Came here for the first time tonight, walked in and all I asked was if they accept walk ins. The woman at the counter started explaining to me that they take reservations and walk-ins, then started explaining the price of things to me, and as she was in the middle of explaining things to me she snapped "why are you making that face at me". I am autistic and although I might not have full awareness of my facial expression at all times, I was not rude to her in the slightest and did nothing to prompt this behavior from her--the only words I had even said to her was asking if we could come in without a reservation. I have never been treated like this by a service worker for no reason. I left in tears because this night was supposed to be a special night as it was my birthday and I have been wanting to go here for a long while but have bad anxiety, but instead I was yelled at for something related to my disability. I really hope the worker who behaved this way reflects deeply on her behavior, as the way she treated me for a literal disability is absolutely unacceptable. I hope she either truly learns from this or finds a new job, as she should not be working with customers in an environment that is supposed to be inclusive and welcoming to those with disabilities and from all walks of life. Hex & Co needs to do better than this
Leaving this review so people who look like myself know they might not be as welcomed as other patrons here. I came here yesterday with my friend and asked if there was availability, and a worker went around the back, then came back to me at the front and shared that I should find anywhere back there to sit. There was only 1 area that wasn't occupied by friend groups, so we sat there. We enjoyed our game for an hour, then another worker said we need to move and that anyone would have had the sense to know to not sit at the large group seating. May I remind you, this was the only actual spot available when I came, and I was told by a worker to sit anywhere at the back. She scurried off after stating that last line, then another worker came instead. I made him know that she was highly disrespectful and should apologize, but he instead doubled down on being disrespectful (even said I should have seen the empty 6-seater, and go back up to the front and say 'actually, nothing seems to be available'..). Clearly, logic had no place here, but still, I said nothing disrespectful back, didn't shout, etc. even though it could have been justified. I decided that while I spent my money for my friend and I to be there, it wasn't worth it being subjected to this amount of disrespect by the staff. And as I left, I couldn't help but notice that there was an empty large group table at the other end of the backroom (and it did not have a reservation sign), so they could have used it and left us alone. Even still, I'd have no issue being asked to move, but the way the workers chose to be disrespectful to the black patrons will have myself and my peers second-guessing going to another Hex and Co location again. Unfortunate because we've enjoyed going to other locations (but honestly have spent too much $ in them for a board games spot), but if these are the kinds of workers Hex & Co is comfortable hiring, we should enjoy our evenings elsewhere. And apologies for the long read, I just know I'd want this kind of info shared to me so that I know where people like myself are and aren't welcomed. Also, please have a great day and I hope you're having an excellent start to 2024! A few Hex & Co workers aren't enough to derail our great year, and I do wish these individuals change for the better as this degree of hatred often resides in people who are very unhappy themselves.
very condescending staff. i attempted to come here twice but was turned away because "this is a board game cafe". you have to pay $15 just to sit down, apparently, though the first time i'd heard that you just have to buy a coffee to sit down, though they may move you. which is just dumb. i am just one person. i don't think they're that crowded. maybe they should write these rules on a blackboard so there is no confusion and the staff do not seem rude and even worse, uninformed about their own policies. that would be much better. i'll never come here again.
$15 cover to sit down and play old boardgames. Cute idea, ridiculous pricing
I am not one to post a review unless its either a great experience or terrible. I would NEVER recommend Hex&Co. Find you another place to do business. Long Story short - Preorder early for some cards. I had to follow up to get more information on my preorder. 2 weeks before the preorder they responded. They did not honor the preorder price, I was not able to get all the items I wanted and their excuse "We posted it on discord so you should have know". They never sent me a discord page. TERRIBLE customer service, just dont do business with them
If i could give this place 0 stars I would. I went here on Sunday with my group of friends. Everything was fine up until I ordered my food. The employee who was making the food mixed a beef burger patty and put it on my veggie burger. I bit into it thinking it was veggie and after a couple bites I started to feel sick to my stomach. I haven't ate meat for religious and health reasons in 8 years. I reached out to the owners by email and they never responded back to me. The manager at this location was apologetic but outside of him the entire staff was horrible. The lady who served the burger was dismissive to my entire table and catching an attitude the whole night. I think its insane that after having an irregular heart beat and now back and forth with doctors the owners of this establishment didn't think to reach out to me once regarding some form of compensation. Can you imagine someone having a severe food allergy and they serve they serve them the exact thing they can't eat due to negligence? Nonetheless this was a very traumatic experience and I will never step foot or recommend this establishment to anyone. Especially if the owners don't respond to me and make me feel better about this situation.
Today, we were charged $15 per person, including for my 3 year old, after we were told there were appropriate games and puzzles for my kids to use. However, there were no puzzles available unless I purchased the puzzle first and then the game my other daughter wanted to play (Sleeping Queens) was nowhere to be found and needed to be purchased as well. It was clear this was not a viable experience after 15 minutes but the person working at the front counter refused to give me a refund of the cover charges. Will not be returning, clearly not kid friendly.
