Avis sur Altar Brooklyn
It is a nice place. cocktails are delicious and much better than the other places in Brooklyn. Bartender Tom was extremely friendly!
Instantly fell in love with this hidden gem speakeasy when I walked in through the double doors. The dark chapel theme that they curated really gave it a sanctuary feel. Its like they excavated a church and kept the ornate masonry. The bar, the main centerpiece, is so gorgeous and appropriately looks like an altar. This place certainly has date night written all over it. The laid back modern R&B music they played in the background was very soothing. You could easily get lost inside here for hours, which we did. We arrived around 10pm during the holiday weekend and all the good seats were taken in the booths and by the bar. We had settled for the tables in the aisle until we spotted some people leaving. Our waitress, Fabiola was very cheerful and patient with us as we had many questions regarding the menu. Their cocktails here are thoughtfully crafted. We easily had 3 round of drinks. Started out with the Holy Smoke (earl grey infused mezcal, peche, l'orgeat, lime) and Boxing Day Punch (bourbon, marzipan, Guinness, egg, spices. Out of the two, the Holy Smoke was my favorite. I'm already a fan of mezcal and I could sip on that drink everyday, that's how classy and smooth it was. Not to be discounted, the boxing day punch arrived with all the bells and whistles. But it was doing too much with the flavors in my opinion. Our 2nd round of drinks included the Mariahhhh (mulled rose wine, absinthe, rose pet nat, grapefruit) which tasted like a medium body complex rose to me and the Bolivian Snow (Singani, rum, matcha, pistachio, cocoa, egg white, lemon). Not a big fan of the latter, it felt like a green light smoothie. Last but not least, we finished with two great drinks if you are a rum drinker : the Faith Healer (Rum, green tea, spiced pear, coconut water, lemon, egg white) and the Sterling Nutcracker (151 rum, Oaxacan rum, fruit punch cider, L' orgeat, lemon). The nutcracker was stronger but these were both good choices to end with. 3 drinks in, I had a nice buzz going by the time we had to leave but I was not overly drunk. I also didn't wake up the following day with a bad headache. Even without the spectacular cocktail menu, the food here could stand on its own. Their menu consisted of small plates. We sampled about 5 dishes. Let me get this out the way quick, get the duck magret!!! Amazing seared duck breast in merlot reduction & served with black mission figs & gooseberries. They ran out of the ciabatta melt which my husband was pining for when we arrived (he said it was delish last time he came here), so that's another gem we missed. If you want to construct a full meal, the duck went perfectly with the Forage and Farm (mushroom, whipped goat cheese, arugula, chives, olive oil, toast). They also happened to have an oyster sampler special the night we went in (6 for $14). The poke arrived in a beautiful presentation. I loved the super light rice crisp and the artic char with ginger vinaigrette and avo pure. Overall, solid dish but I felt it contained too much wasabi. Lastly, my husband wanted the patatas bravas, which I thought were a tad overly seasoned with that garlic saffron aioli. All in all, if I could, I would worship here every Sunday! When you find a good cocktail bar, it really is nourishing for the soul. Already planning another visit.
These cocktails are SO fun and delicious. Also, if you don't drink alcohol, the bartenders will cook you up a personalized mocktail based on what you're feeling. 10/10 on those inventive mocktails - arguably better than the cocktails
excellent crafted cocktails, classy ambiance, the service (my bartender is Carlos) is a pleasure. a local gem.
We rented out the bar for an engagement party and it could not have been better. The friendliest staff, amazing food & drinks, super accommodating with all of our needs, and everybody had an amazing evening. Thank you for the best time!
Chill vibes, excellent drinks, excellent service and talented bar staff. And Icelandic aquavit. What could be better? Not much.
My favorite bar in Crown Heights. Vibes are amazing. Drinks are delicious. Naomi was awesome. The decor is absolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend.
We popped by for happy hour and enjoyed a white Negroni and old fashion. The vibes were great - will be back to try more!
Great spot both in evenings and mornings
The place was really great. Excellent service and vibes.
Beutiful! Drinks, food, ambiance, service - five stars! Came here for cinco de mayo bec the other bars were full. This place did not disappoint. Service was amazing. Was not expecting much but pleasantly surprised. Highly recommend.
This is my fav bar at the moment. I really, really like the decor. Interesting drinks and impeccable service. I take all my friends here when they come to visit
Great happy hour and cocktails. Small bite food is very good. Service can be a little slow but with it
I was surprised to find seats at this place on a Saturday night. Maybe it's because the place is off of the main street. A high quality cocktail bar worth a visit.
The best bartenders! It's a nice looking place with a good, diverse crowd and excellent drinks. So happy to have this place.
What a wonderful little bar/lounge. Very classy and elegantly decorated throughout. Had a number of cocktails which were incredible - some of the best I've ever had with so much effort put into the presentation of the drink as well. The food was outstanding too and I highly recommend trying the various options available. The staff were outstanding and were so friendly and helpful. I definitely recommend stopping by to try this bar if you've never been before as you won't be disappointed.
Jitterbug perfume was the best drink I’ve had in along time. Props to the bar team. Snacks are also a hit and service was prompt and friendly.
An absolutely stunning cocktail bar! This place has a magnetic mystic energy to it, just walking by feels like you're walking by a different moment in time. I've never had the food, though they have a beautiful looking menu, but their cocktails are so unusual and creative and visually they're all showstoppers. I'd honestly love to make my way through the entire menu. Absolutely one of my favorite spots in the neighborhood for date nights or a cocktail with friends!
Great little cocktail bar with a good selection of mixed drinks. Lots of new things to try outside of the usual cocktails. The food is also really good. Not the place to come for a quick beer (I don't think they even have beer), but perfect for a date night if you're looking to impress.
Speakeasy vibes done properly! Not big space but definitely a dope space. Great experience for a new date or a seasoned couple. Because it is right off of Franklin Ave on Sterling, you miss the big crowds which is perfect for the vibe it has. Now, the important part... Drinks: On my third visit and have yet to have a bad cocktail. Drinks have consistently been on point. Food: Do NOT go there hungry, the menu contains a great selection of tasty bite-size options...but that is what they are, bites. Overall: IMO - This is a great extreme of the timeline spot. So, starting the night here, or finishing the evening here...either way, you can't go wrong. Altar for the win!
One of my absolute favorites in the area. Cocktails are superb, and also change which is super fun. Such great bartenders. The level of craft in each drink is something special. And the $10 drink happy hour is so great. Giovanni was our waiter and was so fantastic. Couldn’t say enough great things about Altar
Favorite cocktail bar in Brooklyn! Lovee this place, the Inner Clarity is one of the best cocktails I’ve ever had. I hope it comes back to the menu soon. Definitely worth trying all the new ones until then.
Amazing cocktails that that will change your prospective of what a drink should taste like. Unbelievable small plates that are as delicious as a fine dining restaurant. All this at a great price. You owe it to yourself to try this place. Super friendly and warm and cozy. It’s such a great addition to the neighborhood and to Brooklyn. Will be back again and again.
One of my favorite cocktail bars. High quality and well-made drinks with delicious small plates are always solid. Great crowd and a room for private parties as well.
Great spot, drinks are lovely and the atmosphere is great!
One of the best spots in the neighborhood. Sister bar to the legendary Chavelas, this place also delivers on both amazing cocktails and delicious bar bites. Never disappointed here especially when Andrew is behind the bar. Will return again and again and again (especially for those boquerones!)
Found Altar soon after they opened and since we’ve gone, we’ve come back multiple times a week! All the cocktails and unique and delicious, honestly think this is one of the best places for cocktails in the greater nyc area. All the staff are nice and ambience is perfect! Highly recommend!
Love this place. Fantastic cocktails which aren’t 20 a pop, good happy hour, good music and vibes and never too crowded. Highly recommend.
So quaint! Had a wonderful time and the atmosphere was fantastic.
This is a fantastic place. The food. The drinks. The atmosphere. It is all awesome. And I must add: This is THE place to book your private event! I had a private gathering there last week. Every element of the night surpassed my expectations. Special shout out to Fabiola for taking such good care of me and my guests!! Thank you so much, Fabiola and the entire crew at Altar!! My friends and I had a wonderful time. The drinks=amazing. The food=absolutely delicious, especially the truffle corn! The service=stellar! They went above and beyond to make my special day memorable and fun. I didn't have to worry about even one thing. They covered all the details for me, including things I didn't even think about. And with minimal work for me upfront. What a delightful, personalized experience. I have been where you are right now....should I book this spot for my special day or not? Book it!! And tell them I happily sent you...😉😀 (Btw, no one there even mentioned/asked that I leave a review...which makes me love this spot even more. They are just out here being excellent for the sake of being excellent!)
Ambiance is fun, different, and generally relaxed. Cocktails are unique, interesting, and absolutely delicious. Has to be amongst the very top of the list for best cocktails in Brooklyn. Go, you won't be disappointed
Great new crown heights spot. Service is super informed and the cocktails all deliver. Beautiful ambience - perfect for date night or just a nice drink. Plus late night food never hurts. Will come back.
My friend took this photo and captured how stunning these drinks are in person! I’m a huge fan and never had a disappointing cocktail here. If you don’t want to commit to a huge drink, you can get a half sized martini called “the cheeky baby”! It’s adorable as well as what is presented in the picture. Grab that, the beef tartare, and you’ll be set for an unforgettable evening.
Beautiful bar with a classy speakeasy vibe but very welcoming and laidback. Small food menu with tapas and snacks, really nice varied cocktail menu. Sterling Nutcracker was solid with 151 proof rum, and they’re not cheap with the rum either. Stopped by on a weeknight, handful of booths and bar seats available without a wait. Would make a nice date spot. Service was friendly and consistent despite 1 primary person working both the bar and tables. Definitely enjoyed my bday week celebrations here!
Expectations were high for Altar — opened by the owner of the legendary East Village cocktail bar Mayahuel — and they were greatly exceeded from start to finish. The cocktails here are on another level, thoughtfully crafted from an eclectic assortment of ingredients and presented masterfully. We stopped by late on Friday and I enjoyed the Holy Smoke - earl grey infused mezcal, peche, l’orgeat and lime. The service is wonderful and the decor radiates of mystical 1930s exorcism church vibes (?). Great for dates or for small intimate groups - they have lovely booths with leather banquet seats. Easily the crown jewel cocktail bar of crown heights.
Unexpectedly found this spot! My husband found it and it was a hit, not only were the drinks excellent but the service was great (our bartender was so friendly and engaging). In addition the vibes are awesome!!! We will definitely come back to try the food, based on the menu and the reviews it’s sure to be a hit!!!
The drinks here are always fun and inventive. It's nice to go and get a couple different drinks of varying ABV. The atmosphere is gorgeous. Gives the feeling of a speakeasy without being too dark and cramped. My favourite thing to do is sit at the bar and people watch. It seems to be a place where people go to catch up with friends
Absolutely immaculate vibes here. On top of that, the dirty martinis they craft here are truly amazing and my group agreed that those were the best martinis we've ever had. If you're looking for a cheaper option, draft beers were also priced quite reasonably. Definitely will be coming back here
We come here kinda often, can’t believe we never left a review. This is such a complete bar. Snacks, great cocktails, friendly service… This time we stopped by before and after dinner at Chavelas. We had a bunch of drinks and we had fun. The bathroom is bigger than my 3bed apartment lmaaoooo
Lovely happy hour, cool staff and the small bites they offer is good! I recommend!
Looking forward to returning many times over- One of the best hideaways I've found in years. It's a non-descript storefront, save a small neon. Upon entry though, it's a really warm, cozy, and well-considered atmosphere. Melted candles, great lighting, comfy booth-style seating, quirky mural and awesome looking back bar; nothing overly silly or out of place. The drinks are solid and made by someone who appreciates a good cocktail. The food was good, better than most small bars (potatas bravos -sp), and happy hour is reasonable. Most importantly, the staff was very personable, attentive, and friendly. No spiels or pretense, just quality professionalism all around. I looks like they have a good spot for large groups on the other side of the bar as well. Though I didn't get to check into that space, it's good to know about. All in all, highly recommended! :)
Let me tell you, their happy hour (on the weekend) is chef’s kiss — top picks include the White Negroni and the Baby Martini of the Day (bc who wouldn’t want a tiny martini to feel fancy?). Vibes are dark and cute, with a disco ball in both rooms. The staff is fast and friendly, making it the perfect spot, especially if you’re hitting the Brooklyn Museum before or after.
So fun! Service was fast and kind. I guzzled my mocktail and my husband LOVED his boozy choice. Highly recommend.
Go try their coffee! Had a flat white and a pumpkin spice latte and both were incredible! People are very friendly and it’s a chill place to do some work or meet up with a friend.
What a place! Truly a cocktail place with fun combinations, beautiful presentation from the entrance to your glass and very attentive staff! Felt precious, special and utterly delicious.
Altar is an exceptional dining experience that I would highly recommend. The food was simply outstanding—each dish was thoughtfully crafted with rich flavors and beautiful presentation. I tried the [specific dish], and it was one of the best I’ve ever tasted. The menu offers a great variety, catering to different tastes and dietary preferences. The service was impeccable. Our server was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu, making excellent recommendations. The staff went above and beyond to ensure we had a memorable evening, maintaining a perfect balance of professionalism and warmth. The atmosphere at Altar is elegant yet cozy, with a beautifully designed interior that enhances the dining experience. The ambiance was perfect for a relaxed evening, with soft lighting and a pleasant background of music. It’s an ideal spot for both intimate dinners and group gatherings. I spent around [$30–50 per person], which was absolutely worth it for the quality of food and service. I chose to sit in the indoor dining area, which was comfortable and beautifully decorated. They also have a bar area with a sophisticated vibe, perfect for enjoying a pre-dinner cocktail. Overall, Altar exceeded my expectations in every aspect. It’s a culinary gem that should not be missed. I would definitely return and recommend it to anyone looking for a top-notch dining experience.
This was my second time here and it was Tapa Tuesday. The tapa was tasty. I don’t drink and the mocktail was pretty good. Randy the bartender is very kind and great to chat with. She made me really cute ice coffee with spices. Overall great experience. I will definitely be back.
This charming bar and café, which also serves delicious brunch, is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood! The staff are warm and friendly, using La Cabra beans—one of the Top 10 Roasters worldwide—making every sip special. Their Eggs Benedict are incredibly tasty! Definitely worth giving this spot a try.
Lovely little bar with an intimate vibe. They've got music playing but it's not so loud that you can't talk. I got a Jack Rose (which is not always easy to find, even in cocktail bars) and it was delicious. My friend got a mocktail that was also really good. We got some fries and they were great. Will definitely be returning frequently.
Went here for cocktails and had a great time. Sat at the bar and listened to music, had some tasty drinks. Romantic lighting and intimate feel. Great spot for a date.
Soooooo this was one of my best finds for a local spot to have drinks along with a few bites to eat. I had the pleasure of being served by Carlos and Kevin. Amazing staff members who have made my experience here at Altar one to remember. I’ll definitely be back here to explore their fabulous drink menu. And the Tartare paired with the fries was amazing. Carlos, the manager and bartender made all drink to perfection. I’ll definitely be back to explore this beautiful gem. Thanks to all the staff who have made this a wonderful experience.
This is a great spot to spend a couple of hours catching up with friends over cocktails and small bites. We stopped by on a Saturday around 5 pm without a reservation and were seated right away. One of the highlights is their happy hour, which runs even on Saturdays until 7pm (a rare and welcome find!). The drinks and bites were solid, and the atmosphere was relaxed. Service was attentive, friendly, and added to the overall good vibe. Perfect for a casual hangout!
Had a great time at Altar, got some quick bites and a couple of cocktails and a mocktail. The Nada Colada was more strawberry than coconut in my opinion but still quite tasty. The fried chicken was delicious and the restaurant made sure to remove the sesame seed topping from the dish. Seems like it would be a nice date spot with the lighting and ambience.
Great atmosphere, Jahel knows how to make excellent drinks. I also order some food, it’s was simply delicious, had a great time, definitely recommend
Great cocktail bar! Our drinks were amazing, paired great with the olives, and service was attentive and friendly. Atmosphere is great for dates or bringing friends too!
This is my favorite bar in NYC. The vibe of the bar is disco 1920s witch. The atmosphere is friendly and calm. The bartenders are kind, energetic, and efficient. AND THE FOOD!!! Such a small kitchen for the most unexpected flavors (I recommend the Tuna & Toast). I couldn’t imagine a better bar! If you come to ONE bar in New York City or even ONE bar in Brooklyn, come here!

Nice cocktail bar with great drinks. I had the Jungle Bird and a plate of French fries. The indoors has nice ample seating. Will be back.
I’ve been a frequent visitor for a couple of years, and this cocktail bar has never failed to impress. It’s been amazing to watch it grow along with the neighborhood, and it truly feels like a home away from home. The cocktails are fantastic—both creative and classic. I love that they can make the timeless drinks I enjoy (which many bars can’t!). They also offer tasty light bites that pair perfectly with the drinks. Huge shout-out to Carlos and the entire team! They’re incredibly hospitable, and their attentive service makes every visit special. My partner and I are always treated warmly. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, with stylish décor that’s perfect for date nights. Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for great drinks, great service, and a welcoming vibe!
We booked the back room for a birthday party and couldn't have been happier with the experience. The communication before the even was super fast and attentive to our preferences; all the food we ordered was fantastic, especially the boquerones; and the service throughout the night was perfect and the staff extremely kind. We had great night!
everything beautiful- staff was incredible, kind, welcoming, spectacular, and willing to work with us…… the dirty martini however, were not up to par with the amazing service. as a food critic (and martini connoisseur), i am saddened to leave this review. Although made me quite drunk, did not leave a good taste in my mouth. a tad sweet, not enough brine. although !!! they were incredibly kind and willing to remake the drink and improved upon request. beautiful. i love everyone. ❤️
Wanted to try the Mexican restaurant next door but we were too late, they referred us here which was great. I had the Lobster roll which was absolutely delicious. Nice vibe, great service and I'm looking forward to returning. I'm actually glad we were too late for the restaurant!
Was on Date night at the Brooklyn Museum and went to dinner on a Friday night. Our sever Giovanni was excellent and helped us navigate the extensive cocktail menue. We eventually settled on Spicy Margs and had the Smash Burger and the Spicy Chicken, both were out of this world. I highly recommend Altar, sweet vibe, impeccable cocktails, off the chart food (for a bar) and the staff was super friendly.
Really cute spot, small interior with a cozy bar & mostly booth seating. The drinks were *excellent* -- creative, lux, & really well-balanced. Mine were a bit sweet; that's what I was going for & it hit the spot!
The sexiest joint in Brooklyn! Atmosphere is knock out. Carlos, Kelly and the whole staff make you feel at home as soon as you walk through the door. Elevated cocktail menu and excellent food til late night!
I had an amazing time at this restaurant! The cocktail options were fantastic, and the ambiance was incredibly comfortable and relaxing with a groovy vibe. The music was just right—not too loud, but enough to enhance the experience. The staff was attentive, friendly, and professional, which added to the overall enjoyment. The food was also great. Overall, it was a wonderful experience that I'd recommend.

Good drinks and surprisingly great food for a pub! My pineapple ginger mocktail was a little on the sweet side, and that’s coming from me. Would recommend the smashburger and the dilly cocktail though!
Was looking for a place to eat and saw there was a tapas place closeby. Wanted to check it out and was not disappointed at all. We walked in and was greeted by Troy who offered us many booths to choose to sit down. The place is nicely decorated and had some oldies playing in the background. Really nice atmosphere especially if you want to date. They even have a private room if needed as well. We sat down and ordered some wines to begin. We thennchose to order 4 plates of tapas. We started with the duck and and tuna. The duck had a nice grilled type of flavoring with figs, which was the 1st time I had this combo. Next, I went to the tuna tartar which was so fresh and flavorful. Troy thought it would be nice to order the sticky chicken. He was not wrong at all. Before the chicken arrived, we sampled the lobster roll which was not bad at all, then we dabbled with the boquerones (sardines) with a spicey bite but not overly spicy. It was really good. Troy checked in on us constantly to see if we were enjoying it, and we were!! Picked up a cote du Rhone wine and was feeling easy. The chicken arrived and was worth the wait. We had an excellent dining experience and looking forward to returning for the rest of the menu!!!
Fantastic and unique cocktails, and at really reasonable prices considering how thoughtfully crafted they all are! Super friendly service. My only complaint is that the bar chairs for the high top tables are really uncomfortable and seem much more for the aesthetic than for actual sitting... I'll gladly come in again soon, but if that's the only seating available at the moment I'm turning back around if I'm honest
I recently came here on a date and it was the perfect venue. The back room is cute majority intimate seating that felt very romantic. There’s one table that allows you a view of the disco ball in the other room which is fun. The servers and service was really nice and the food didn’t take too long to come out. I was impressed with the chicken and burrata. Both were really yummy and well portioned. There’s no room to dance really but the music was hit after hit. I would definitely come back for an evening neighborhood hang.
I just searched for a place with mocktails and this popped up as the best mocktails ever! I just wanted to be outside and clear my thoughts. I ended up actually drinking a few cocktails. The bartender was very attentive as soon as I sat down he poured me a glass of water. The vibe was definitely there. It wasn’t super packed. I arrived at 12:10am ish. People were in and out. Some celebrating birthdays, Some stopping by for a night cap, some catching up with friends and others (me) drinking solo at the bar and writing in her journal. I enjoyed my short lived time here and the menu, music, vibe. For any occasion Altar seems to be the go to. I definitely will be back. I only came for a drink and a vibe but the menu definitely tempted me to get an appetizer. Chai Tai is strong but definitely a show stopper. I was later joined + broke my solitude & the apps were enjoyable. If you like tin-fish try the Boquerones.

Cute & posh. The servers were very particular. They wouldn't let us sit in open seats that we preferred because they were out of their line of site, and they didn't want to pour water for my date until she got there because they "don't do standing water". Good drinks, but not out of this world and fairly pricey.
me personally? I’m ok on Altar. we went on a Friday, and service was super slow because they had a single (nice!) server for the whole sit down bar. cocktail menu reads well, but both cocktails we ordered were pretty poorly balanced. mine tasted like a sixteen dollar baileys! fine but not what I was looking for.
Me and some friends went to the place on Saturday night to have a drink and catch up. There were 5 of us. We ordered drinks that were good, but I've had better things. Prices are affordable for every budget. The atmosphere in the place is a little strange because they try to catch all types of customers, whether it's the European design, the Brooklyn songs, or the luxurious service. Everything was very nice until the bill came and they charged us 20% for a large party. There were 5 of us on an order of $80. Of course we added a tip, but it's not cool to charge 20% for a large party, which is why the rating is 3 stars.

Interesting food and drinks. Unfortunately I was left with a bad taste after another waiter aggressively cleaned our table and basically asked us to leave to sit at the bar (which was full). Some back story we waited for over 30 minutes for a drink after we ordered when they were not full. So made us feel like ther was no rush honestly. I get the need to turn over a table but as we left we saw 4 other tables that were empty. At the end of the day there is a way to ask to leave a table and it is not to aggressively clean up a table that was not urs and then just outwardly say to people that they need to leave and go to the bar that was comply full when other tables were empty.
Came here Saturday for a cocktail- the tall, male bartender was quietly hostile in his communication about drink options, obviously bothered to be performing his job. It was an energy suck. He made subpar drinks and then proceeded to make a few for himself, but never circled back to see if we wanted another, or anything else- it wasn’t that busy. I’d not come back based on this alone. We paid and left a modest tip just so as not to stiff a pooled house. It’s a shame to encounter negative energy like that on an otherwise vibey night out.
So expensive. Cocktails were bad and the food was rotten and expired. Service was slow. Do not go here!!!
There are truly no words to describe the disrespect my friend faced from the waiter. My friend entered the bar politely, just minutes after we’d taken our seats. He had barely exchanged a couple of words with the waiter before he was met with unwarranted rudeness, right in front of nearby patrons, leaving us feeling uncomfortable and confused. Wanting to understand, we asked the waiter if something had gone wrong, assuming he might be having a bad day. Rather than showing any openness, he responded with further attitude and even hinted that he didn’t like our friend—seemingly without cause. As my friend is gay, the waiter’s behavior gave us the disturbing impression that it was rooted in homophobia. When we raised the issue with the bar manager, we were met with disappointment. Rather than taking us seriously or acknowledging the discomfort of those who witnessed it, the manager defended the waiter, dismissing our concerns. It’s deeply disheartening to feel targeted and dismissed like this, especially today, and from a place that’s part of the service industry. This was quickly becoming my favorite neighborhood spot, but it’s hard to feel welcome somewhere that doesn’t prioritize respect for its customers.
Went to this bar the Wednesday before Thanksgiving with some friends and the bartender called final call a little after 12 despite not closing until 2. The waitress claimed it was because they ran out of ice but when we asked if we could get beer. The bartender told the waiter no. As we were getting ready to head out, we noticed that there were several people at the bar drinking freshly made cocktails and cold beer. When asked why we were denied service, the bartender stated that they were his friends and family and that he was going through a death in his family. This bartender claimed to be the manager, which would suggest that they are taking advantage of their position for personal reasons because the bar was not officially closed for a private event. While I can empathize with a loss, I don’t believe the staff handled this situation correctly. Truly a shame this happened because the bar is cute and drinks were good…
Disappointing and humiliating experience. My friends and I had a deeply humiliating and painfully exclusionary experience at Altar at 11:30 PM. After two white women were allowed inside without issue, a waiter shut the door on us (Black) and ignored our repeated knocks. The only reason we finally received an explanation was when another waiter had to unlock the door to take out the trash, we were told they were closing early at 12 instead of their usual 2AM closing because it was a “slow night.” Why let white customers in while barring Black patrons? This treatment was blatantly unfair, demoralizing, and completely unacceptable.
I am deeply disappointed by the discriminatory treatment my friends and I experienced last night. I’ve been a loyal monthly customer for years, but after this, I can’t see this place the same. We arrived around 11:30 p.m. Two white women were allowed inside, and within seconds the server shut the door in my friend’s face and locked it. When we knocked for clarification, the server ignored us, briefly opened the door to say “We are closed” in a dismissive tone, then slammed it again—leaving three Black women outside in freezing temperatures. While we were still there, two Black men with confirmed reservations were also denied entry. Meanwhile, Google lists closing at 2:00 a.m., and I’ve personally been served here close to midnight before. If the bar was “closed,” white patrons should not have been allowed in. The treatment was humiliating, exclusionary, and unacceptable. I truly hope management addresses this discriminatory behavior so no one else has to experience it.
