Karasu is a Japanese speakeasy praised for its intimate atmosphere, creative cocktails, and delicious food. The salmon and karaage chicken are highly recommended. Some find the portions small and the prices high, especially outside of happy hour.

The food here is so fresh and delish!! Pretty little place. Great drinks. Modern menu… they’re iPads. They have a back area that has seating for probably 10 people. Def recommend coming here. Service was also very good :)
10/10! Food was flavorful & authentic, the frozen margaritas were perfectly balanced (not skimpy on the tequila), and the service was exemplary. For apps, my party ordered the chips & guac, chicken flautas, and chicken mole tamal. The guac was very flavorful, and the chips were freshly fried; they came out warm & perfectly salted. The flautas were the BEST I'VE EVER HAD; no joke. Usually, the chicken inside of flautas is on the bland side, even gamey at certain places, but not these; these flautas were fresh & full of flavor on the inside. The chicken mole tamal hit all the notes I hoped it would; hearty, with complex flavor notes (warm spices, slight sweetness, nuttiness, smokiness; I could go on & on). For entrées three of us ordered tortas/sandwiches (1 steak and 2 chicken milanesas, with yucca fries); all carefully crafted, proportioned, and well-seasoned. The other member of my party ordered the churrasco de pollo that was presented beautifully and was also full of flavor. The frozen happy hour margaritas did not disappoint either! Our server, Rosario, was warm and accommodating, and the owners are the sweetest! It's refreshing to see our people (black & brown) own and operate successful businesses in our now heavily gentrified neighborhoods; one of the owners attended the JHS right up the block! They have live music on Friday nights, and on warm evenings, their outside dining area is the perfect escape from the bustling Dekalb Ave. traffic. Needless to say, Los Dos Hermanos is a MUST visit!
We pulled up and were immediately welcomed with a smile. I like that. We decided to sit outside and the host turned on the heater for us. We had: Mezcal margaritas with tajin on the rim 8.5/10 Corn on the cob, minus the cob 7/10 Steak Quesadilla 11/10 Chicken Quesadilla 11/10 Yucca Fries 10/10 The service was great, very nice ppl working here. The music was sitting covers of popular music. Very nice laid back vibe. The owner gave us history on the restaurant and was checking in on the other patrons. Super nice guy. Def stop by for a drink and 🗣️🗣️🗣️GET THE QUESADILLAS!!!
We had the best time here. The food, drinks and environment were all 10/10. As a margarita lover, I highly suggest a classic marg. Will definitely be back
Such a great place!! This was my first time in there and it was such an amazing experience 🤩. Great service, great food and the drinks were on point 👌🏼. Their waitress Rosario was exceptional. The most lovely margaritas I’ve ever had. Totally recommended 10/10
We stopped here for lunch on a Sunday. We sat outside and ordered a sangria and a beer as well as some chips and guacamole to start. They do offer a $20 bottomless mimosa and sangria deal during brunch (although didn’t opt for that this time). Our drinks and chips arrived at the same time. The sangria was very good (and strong) and would recommend. We had gone for the spicy guacamole and it was great, with just the right amount of spice. We decided to share the taco board and the pork tostada. The portions were generous and this was more than enough food to share. Everything we tried was delicious and I loved that the tortillas were corn tortillas (really makes such a difference). The only sight disappointment was the fish taco, nothing bad but it just wasn’t as flavorful as everything else. One area for improvement would be that the service was a little slow. They were very busy though so it may have just been a one off. Our total bill, including tax and tip, was $125 (which we thought was reasonable for the quality of food). We will definitely be back and highly recommend this spot if you are in the area.
Excellent food. Fresh ingredients. Friendly and authentic advice from the employees. The best Mexican I’ve ever tasted albeit I’ve only had Mexican about 20 times. Highly recommend!
Come for the food, stay for the atmosphere. The staff works hard to make you feel like home. The food, delicious, authentic and served fresh. The drinks, plentiful. Rose and Oscar, don't just make you feel welcomed, they go above and beyond to make you feel like family. Highly reccomend their steak fajitas, their wings and all of their drinks.
Not 5/5, not 10/10, it’s a 100/100! A Truly Flawless Dining Experience! I'm not exaggerating when I say that this restaurant has set a new standard for excellence for me. From the moment I walked in, I was blown away by the attention to customer satisfaction, detail to decor, and commitment to quality food and drinks. We were welcomed to sit comfortably while waiting for our table. During that brief time, we had the chance to take in the decor and meet the owner and his wife. It happened so casually and genuinely! Made us feel like VIP. My friends were visiting out of state so it was important for me that They have a good time! And they did. We did. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the menu to find that it was a tablet! Very helpful for those like myself who find traditional menus challenging to read! The food was sublime. I had the Elote and Al Pastor tacos. My husband had the churrasco steak and eggs and my friends had the chicken burrito bowl and the Pulpo. We demolished our plates. The bottomless drinks, were great quality! Not watered down like other places! The service was impeccable, the atmosphere was warm and inviting... the list goes on. I genuinely couldn't think of a single area for improvement. If you're looking for a dining experience that will leave you feeling wholesome, and eager to return, look no further. This restaurant is a true gem in my beloved Brooklyn.
Everything is authentic here, from Oscar the owner, to the food and drink. Best Sangria, best Mimosas, most flavorful Pulpo. The atmosphere and decor was inviting for both an intimate date or group setting. Own the day and be a hero to your friends by bring them here!
This place was absolutely awesome! I had the pork tacos and guacamole with chips and their delicious sangria ! Best sangria i have tasted . Rose and Oscar make you feel like part of the family. Anytime i’m in town i will definitely will be having dinner here!
The steak bowl was delicious! The food tasted well seasoned and fresh. Ambiance and music, 5 stars! Would recommend for a date night or dinner with a friend!
The 2 Brothers made me want to have 2 Brothers of my very own because wow the food was sooooooo delicious..the most perfect Yuca Fries and Chipotle Mayo heavenly..Mama Rosa and the wait staff were super nice and thoughtful..the Steak Quesadilla was awesome and The churros best ever the chocolate sauce and the ice cream to die for... Thank you sooo much
The place has good aesthetics. Their kitchen creates excellent dishes at reasonable costs. The food quality impressed me and the price seemed right for how much I received. The team provides excellent customer care. We found this restaurant truly excellent.
Best Mexican food and amazing service!!! Definitely come again soon. Highly recommend.
Celebrated our anniversary here. Was perfect for us. We were looking for a place that had some elegant food without the pomp of an overly serious stuffy tasting menu place and this was exactly it. The service was great- pleasant without being overbearing. I have no idea what the negative reviews were talking about regarding service. Atmosphere wasn’t loud and overwhelming like many nyc restaurants. The food was great and cocktails were absolutely delicious. Highly recommended. Absolutely will go again!!
If you like sushi, this is the most try. There are some unique takes on sashimi and sushi that I really love. Love the Japanese whiskey here as well.
Hidden within another restaurant, this speakeasy izakaya offers a thoughtful, seasonal menu crafted by a superstar chef who began his career in Tokyo. Each dish is beautifully and deliciously prepared, complemented perfectly by cocktails mixed by their amazing bartender. The experience of おもてなし(omotenashi; Japanese hospitality) at this spot is so apparent that by the time we left, my two dinner companions had already declared they’d become regulars, eager to bring their clients next time. I cannot wait to be back next time.
I enjoyed myself! We attempted to do a walking dinner around 7:30 on Labor Day weekend and surprisingly they could accommodate. We had about a 15 minute wait, but big ups to the hostess with the curly hair for working things out so beautifully for us ♥️ We sat in the three-seater booth at the back which is a perfect view. Had the steak, edamame, steak tartare... Everything was yummy but I think the menu would be exceptional if they put wagyu on it. Good music. Good Vibes. Would come again.
Really cool space behind the restaurant Walters. Dark, vibey interior which really complimented the food and drinks. Drinks were delicious, creative, and well organized. They had a wide offering of drinks and cocktails which work perfectly with the menu. The food was so very delicious. Prepared perfectly with authentic Japanese flavors. Really enjoyed the Wagyu tartar and the winter bean salad. The unagi don was also outstanding. Perfect for an intimate date, will be back when the occasion calls for it.
I had one night in Brooklyn and asked ChatGPT to create an itinerary for my day. For dinner, it suggested Karasu. Winner. It’s located at the back door of Walter’s just past the WC. It’s dimly lit and has a nice, chill mood. There was 60s and 70s R&B playing. I was there early so I ordered from the HH menu and sat at the bar. I had a glass of Oregon Pinot Noir paired with their Karasu burger (with yuzu garlic mayo, mizuna and sake braised onion) and furikake fries. Both had a nice, spicy kick to them. A delicious blend of all three. I’d highly recommend a visit especially if you show up at Walter’s with a long wait.
Would recommend. Salmon bowl was yummy and fresh. The roe was so salty and yum. My date loved the curry bowl and said the flavor was very balanced and not too spicy. He did not miss meat at all. Good proportion of curry to rice. Whisky soda was so bland, so I got a drink that had a flat component and was very yummy. Sat at the bar and did not feel squashed. The karaage came out piping hot and was so fresh, yummy, tender, and juicy. Also, a good amount to share between two. The oysters taste best by themselves.
I had the pleasure of dining at Karasu last night and it was an absolutely superb experience. I began my meal with the sweet potato with delicious butter, which was a 10/10. The karagee was also a delightful surprise and I could not get enough of it. My main course was the whole red snapper, which was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. I paired my meal with a Sake, which was the perfect accompaniment to the meal. I would definitely recommend Karasu to anyone looking for an unforgettable dining experience. 5 stars!
Amazing Japanese. Salmon was amazing. Bartender pleased me not a big sake fan taste with Yamahai! I regret we couldn't fit more space is small but nice decorated, awesome mirrorjob and lamp. Dont let yourself being sited in deadend of a bar, straight away we jave asked for replacement, otherwise we could have left (not positive spot). Boneless chicken amazing. Go to place gor small date, as the place is tiny. Happy experience overall ♡♡♡
Pleasantly surprised. No sushi. Low key. Great food. Odd that the raw menu that had “grilled” shrimp on it. When I asked the server how grilled shrimp could be on the Raw menu she said “ it’s lightly grilled “. Ended up being some of the most over cooked, tough rubbery shrimp I’ve ever had. Too much attention in the beginning ( early reservation ) turned into perhaps not enough service clearing plates and getting our check. Other than that, a complete class evening with great food.
I had trouble finding the door to get in and ended up in the hallway to a private residence and then the restaurant’s kitchen... but that’s part of the appeal I guess. The atmosphere and staff were good. The happy hour cocktail was great. The portions are small so ordering a lot is needed (and thus pricey). Everything was delicious tho and some of the dishes were rather unique.
Came here on a Saturday afternoon and ordered the margarita and draft beer, with chips & guac and the ceviche. Drinks and ceviche were fair, guac was excellent. Our server was very pleasant. They have a cool outdoor seating that is nicely decorated with plants, although the chairs were a little uncomfortable. Overall, a good restaurant, I would return.
The experience was okay overall. The waiters were nice and attentive. We ordered the queso fundido with chorizo which was disappointing -do not bother. Almost microscopic bits of chorizo in the cheese. The first order didn't have chorizo so when I mentioned this, I think we offended the owner and staff. We also ordered the octopus appetizer. The octopus was a little spicy, but good. Also ordered the chips and guac. Very standard -i make them better at home. For mains we ordered the steak burrito bowl, the Mexican pork suckling sandwich, the torta de milanesa sandwich, and the chicken enchilada with green sauce. Everything was good, just not what you would expect for the price. The total was about $173 with tip. Find yourself a "non fancy" Mexican restaurant in the city for a tenth of the price and better tasting food.
Great food and amazing cocktails — highly recommend! We got the salmon twice; it was that good. The only thing that dampened our experience was the hostess’s unfriendliness. She could have been more welcoming and didn’t need to remind us twice about giving up the table when the next reservation hadn’t even arrived. When we asked about getting another drink, the staff seemed reluctant to let us stay, even though the next group wasn’t there yet.
Tucked behind Walter’s, this moody little Japanese spot is seriously special. The interior is stylish and intimate, with a gorgeous bar and super friendly staff that make you feel right at home. We sat at the bar and watched the magic happen, the sashimi was fresh and beautifully presented, and everything had that quiet confidence of a place that knows it’s good.
They are kinda speakeasy style, located behind another restaurant. I’ve been here a couple of times already and always had a great time. Whether it’s for drinks with small dishes or a full dinner, the service and the quality of food and drinks have never been disappointing. The atmosphere was comfortable with a touch of intimacy, plus some Japanese accent, which I absolutely love it.
A nice little Japanese bar. The food menu is quite small and pricey (tonkatsu is $39, karaage $17), but the cocktails are delicious, and the atmosphere and service are great. Happy hour items seem far less expensive (pork belly over rice is $12, karaage $9), so I’ll try to go during HH next time.
I'm entranced. After dinner at Walter's, a couple friends and I headed to the back of the Fort Greene, Brooklyn restaurant and entered into this mysterious, completely black, no signage door that led to one of the greatest speakeasy type bars I've ever come across. There isn't a ton of space as far as tables go (maybe 8?) but there's also a bar area and, if you're lucky, you can snag a seat there without having to make a reservation. I was automatically impressed with the service from the moment I sat down - attentive bartenders and they were knowledgeable and willing to explain drinks if needed. My friends and I tried out a few different options and each of us loved all of the ones we tried. If you're a gin drinker, the Bee Side (gin, basil, lemon, lychee) is amazing. For darker rum drinkers, the Nettai is good (and strong) but it's essentially shaved ice like... definitely unexpected. But, for so much ice, it's actually strong (seriously) and there's quite a lot of drink in it. Both of my friends had the Wave (gin, coconut, lime, etc.) and really liked it. I'm not a coconut fan, but they both are and enjoyed it. An odd thing about his place is that, as my friend said it, "it's sort of Russian roulette with the glass your drink is served in." One friend ordered a drink and it was in a small cocktail glass, then a bartender made the same exact drink 10 minutes later for someone else in a glass two inches taller than her. Slightly odd, but I think that's just the way it is... the luck of the draw. However, all cocktails are $14, no matter what sized glass you get. The ambiance, experience and true chemistry that goes into making these drinks is unmatched. I'm excited to go back and actually have dinner here next time!
We needed a balanced cocktail after a 'long' week and before dinner at Samui (highly recommend) and I had a hankering for the Thrice Rice. This time the experience was much better with the new bartender because he seemed more personable or engaging. It's a relaxing speak-easy type place until it gets crowded and it becomes difficult to enjoy your drink or appreciate the design of the space.
My partner and I walked the neighborhood during the day and met a sweet lady. She mentioned her son(s) own the place and it’s good Mexican. She was so nice that we decided to go. The food was good for the most part but there were some issues. One issue was the waitress was a bit pushy. We didn’t want a ton of water with our meal and ordered 1bottle. We went back and fourth were her telling her it was enough for us and she insisted we buy 2 bottles because they were “very small”. To our surprise the water bottles came out as standard size water bottles and we don’t even finish it! I heard her do the same to another table next to us and they were pretty upset as well. The food was good, however, the steak Fajita, which we asked to take home was a complete joke. We had 4 small pieces of steak that were overcooked along with a ton of peppers. For 6 wings, quesadilla, steak fajita, chips and guac (guac was really good), and 4 margs, it totaled $174 before tip. I spend that at other restaurants in the area but this quality did measure up AND I’ve gotten extremely good Mexican for far cheaper. Wanted to give this place a chance because I actually like the owner when in the wine shop next door and his mom was so cool. Not sure I’d recommend but maybe I’ll try again some day.
Their food was fine, though the queso fundido was like a big sticky glob of cheese in a dish that was hard to eat, and the tamales were dry. Their service was also smothering, where the wait staff asked us if we were ok six times within twenty minutes. (I mean, let us eat in peace for at least a few minutes!) On top of this, on Valentine’s Day, they hustled us out after EXACTLY ONE HOUR AND FIVE MINUTES, saying they “need the table because we’re busy.” We even had a reservation, we weren’t walk-ins. Awful experience! This last part totally ruined it for me. There are so many better places to eat in Brooklyn and NYC that I definitely wouldn’t waste my time here.
Made a reservation for nye showed up and the restaurant was closed. As a business this the biggest no-no. The fact that no one has caught this and reach out to me is unacceptable . I would never consider them for a meal, no matter how good the food might be.
