most delicious food, wonderful service. do yourself a favor and give this hidden gem a try, the people that know know. best restaurant in San Simone and Cambria
Just had dinner we ordered the coconut shrimp as our appetizer. They were delicious! My husband ordered the poached salmon and I ordered the sea bass both were served with garlic mashed potatoes and vegetables. They also served fresh sourdough rolls. Everything was super tasty and fresh. We very much enjoyed our food and wonderful service. The reviews of this place are right on. You won’t be disappointed. Thank you 😊
We celebrated our anniversary here tonight. The coconut shrimp appetizer was cooked perfectly & delicious. We were also very pleased with our entrees: Seafood Pasta & Chicken Piccatta. The service was wonderful too. We will definitely be eating there again!
Service is slow. That's not a bad thing. Just know before you go and be kindly patient. It's a small-town quaint restaurant, not fast food. Relax for a while. :) I had the Alfredo pasta and it was delicious. The sauce was seasoned differently from traditional Alfredo sauce and I can't really describe it. Some may not like that it's a little different but give it a try. My husband had the fish and chips. The fish was lightly battered and he really liked it.
i’m not sure what all the 1 star reviews are for…? there was only a few workers there but the employees were all friendly and lovely. they were very attentive and had good vibes. the food was awesome!! the seafood pasta was divine, the clam chowder was amazing. :) very happy with this place.
Wonderful restaurant that was connected to the hotel we were staying. I wasn't expecting the experience we had, which was great! Friendly staff, delicious food and a lovely room. We sat by the window, which was circular, like a ship's window, which I found charming. The food was delicious, plentiful and priced right. Definitely recommended.
I had the Seafood Sampler and my wife had the Clam Linguini. The seafood was cooked to perfection. Everything was super tender and fresh tasting. The Shrimp Cocktail was awesome. Also very fresh tasting and not overcooked. Killer cocktail sauce. The Creme Brulee and Lemon cheesecake are to die for.
Where do I begin? The bread is homemade sourdough bread which is amazing! We had the Cajun Shrimp which was fantastic. The appetizer had shrimp with homemade mashed potatoes underneath them and a special homemade sauce. After that we had the house salad and their clam chowder. Both were phenomenal. Make sure to order the swordfish and prawns or the sea bass both were the best we have ever had in the history of all meals! The icing on the cake was the homemade orange ice cream...i know it is like what there is not made from scratch. Probably nothing. The owner himself waited on us and could not be more courteous or attentive to our needs. In addition he made an excellent white wine recommendation that not only was reasonable but very tasty. If you go anywhere near San Simeon please visit Manta Rey Resturant!!!! It is the BEST!!!!!!!
Came across as we didn’t want to drive to Cambria to eat as we had just arrived in San Simeon . Wonderful great good and service I had the salmon had great sauce and cooked perfectly , hubby had clam chowder and crab cakes . We both had desert also. Prices reasonable wonderful hostess and service
We are on our way to San Francisco taking scenic coast route from LA and stopped in San Simeon for our half way point. We had dinner here with a lovely server named Beth, we each had a glass house Pinot Grigio paired with crab dinner and the surf and turf. The crab perfectly cooked and so fresh. The steak melted in our mouths! We finished it off with the flourless chocolate cake. I would highly recommended stopping and enjoying this lovely restaurant. (Celiac friendly)
We get so tired of paying a fortune for dinner, only to be assaulted by the noise and the price tag. Not true at Manta Rey. Dinner was delicious, affordable, and oh so quiet even though there were other diners near us. We will definitely return when in the area.
A Peaceful Dining Experience at Manta ray in San Simeon! On our anniversary trip, we were on our way to Hearst Castle we decided to stay one night in San Simeon. We weren’t really looking for anything in particular. We just wanted to see the elephant seals, and made an early tour in the morning in Hearst Castle. We stayed at the Sea Breeze Inn, a nice hotel in San Simeon, and then wanted to find somewhere nearby to eat within walking distance. We crossed the street, there isn’t much traffic, and after about four minutes walking, we arrived at a restaurant Manta ray. We were welcomed by our waiter, Oscar, a very kind man, who showed us to a table. We started by ordering fried calamari, which came with a couple of sauces. We were served fresh water with ice, along with a glass of wine for me and a beer for my husband. I ordered a Zinfandel (about $13, though I don’t remember the name), and my husband ordered a beer. After the calamari, we shared a clam chowder bread bowl. It was delicious, with warm fresh bread and great flavor. Later, we ordered a house Pinot Noir, one of the affordable options. Oscar, our waiter, was respectful, attentive, and very polite. But then the restaurant filled up quickly, a group of 15 came in, then a couple, then another group of four, then two, then another eight people. Suddenly, the restaurant was full. I was surprised at how popular the place was, the service and the food were great. But they are short-staffed. If you come here, remember this: • Sit down and calm down. • If you’re in a hurry, this is not your place. • If you’re coming with kids, this might not be your place either. This is a peaceful restaurant, a local spot where you can enjoy the experience with kind people. Oscar was extremely hardworking. He was cleaning tables, bussing dishes, taking orders, making drinks, serving wine, delivering food, refilling water, and even bringing bread, all at the same time. He was essentially running the entire dining area by himself on a Saturday night rush, while just a couple of cooks worked in the kitchen. In less than 30 minutes, around 25 people came in, and the restaurant can probably hold about 30 in total. Oscar and the cooks did an amazing job doing everything they could to provide good service and tasty food. If you come here expecting fast, five-star service in five minutes because you’re starving, then go somewhere else and pay the extra price. But if you want to relax, have a bottle of wine, order appetizers, and enjoy the atmosphere, this is the perfect place. We stayed from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., enjoying every moment. We had the fried calamari, then clam chowder, then a cioppino, along with battle of wine, beer, and water. The music was relaxing, the atmosphere was peaceful, and the people, locals and travelers, were friendly, kind, and smiling. Please, don’t write a bad review here just because you came from the city expecting to be treated like someone “special.” The special ones are the local people working hard to make your evening better. Be patient, be respectful with the staff, and you’ll have a great experience. For us, it was a memorable anniversary dinner, and we are thankful to Oscar, our waiter, as well as the chefs and staff who made our night special. If I ever return to San Simeon, I will definitely come back to Manta Rey Restaurant.
This place is amazing! I went 2 times in a week it was so delicious and fresh! Sourdough bread, clam chowder, crab-cakes the first time and then seafood pasta the next time! Over the top deliciousness! Cooked perfectly, scallops, mussels, clams, shrimp… The bomb!
A surprise on the edge if the Pacific Coast! This delightful spot connected to the hotel we were staying in, well it was a great surprise! The atmosphere was so charming, we walked in and thexsoft jazz, lively wood work and decor was so inviting. Our server met us as we walked in and said sit wherever you want, so we took a seat by the window. We ordered and our server brought out our drinks with warm rolls with butter. Then our entree followed and the food was so delicious. The shrimp was cook perfectly and we had such a lovely meal. We decided to share dessert and the lemon cheesecake was excellent! I highly recommend that for dessert! If you're in the the San Simeon area, don't pass this place up! You won't be disappointed. What I have learned, we found out that sometimes you don't have to go that far for an amazing dining experience!
We had a fabulously delicious dinner, Miguel the owner greeted us and sat us down right away. We started with some delicious fresh coconut shrimps and a couple of ice cold beers. I had a nice bowl of clam chowder that was thick and full of flavor. For dinner I had the day's special snapper, mashed potatoes and fresh steamed vegetables. Lydia had shrimp Alfredo and pasta. Let me say this, everything was perfectly cooked and full of flavor that were out of this world. We ended our dinning experience with a no flower chocolate cake for Lydia and I had the house special Orange ice cream. If you are ever in San Simeon or just traveling through we totally recommend that you stop and have a five star meal and tell Miguel that Lydia and Robert sent you.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I had the Sampler Platter with a glass of Chardonnay from Hearst Ranch Winery. The food presentation was appealing and the food smell of this hot platter was wonderful. I took my time to enjoy the flavors. What a wonderful surprise to find this restaurant. Very clean and sanitary facility.
Last year I said "THE best calamari I have ever had! Came here because it was next door to our hotel. Can't believe how good the food was! We will come back for the food no matter where we stay." Went back tonight and it was just as good ! The sand dabs dinner was huge and delicious. Even the sourdough rolls were great!
One of my colleagues recommended this place. Ben was awesome. He tolerated our very energetic family having a good time, and made us laugh even more! All of the food was amazing as well. Great time!
I have not had food this good in 10+ years! Very small, very elegant formal/casual restaurant. With the BEST view from inside of the ocean across the street. Staff was AMAZING, atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing. Creme Brulee is A MUST HAVE!!! From the soup of the day, to the steak, to the Ahi Tuna Steak, Clam Chowder Bread Bowl & Coconut Shrimp. EVERYTHING is a MUST have. This will definitely be a favorite place to go visiting the coast.
It was absolutely the best food and wine we have had in California and I would even say the best as sea food pasta ever. The waiter really friendly and helpful. I highly recommend the place whether you are hungry or just need a snack ❤️
Oh my goodness! Hands down the best seafood place I've ever been to! Started out with the Clam Chowder Bread Bowl, wow just wow! So much flavor, so many ingredients, and it was so hot I had to slow down. Everytime I stirred the soup it was steaming! That is the best way to eat clam chowder! It also came with fresh, hot bread rolls and butter. So crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and it just melts in your mouth! Then I had the Seafood Sampler Plate. BEST scallops and shrimp I've ever had! Everything was so tender and full of flavor. You can't tell you're eating seafood, it was so fresh and not fishy. The vegetables were also cooked perfectly, yum! Prices are perfect, you get what you pay for! Can't wait to go back for dessert! Service was also wonderful, my server was helpful and courteous, very professional! Always checked on me, made sure I was taken care of.

Very very nice. Both my wife and I were totally impressed by the food. It was quiet as we were there off season mid week. I appreciate quiet
We stayed at the Quality Inn next to this restaurant and decided to try this place out of convenience. It happened to be the best decision for dinner. It is a small and quaint restaurant with a very comfortable atmosphere. Shout out to the employee working as a host and server! I forgot to get his name but he is amazing! He was the only staff working the front as a host and server but he managed it all on his own- seating guests, cleaning tables, taking orders, serving food, and charging. He was very friendly, hard-working, and really cared about the guest experience. The food was delicious as well. We ordered the calamari, dinner salad, and the sea bass. Everything was delicious. Even the couple sitting next to us gave compliments to the chef. Other dining guests also seemed to like their experience. I didn't have high expectations for this restaurant so I was very surprised with the great service and delicious food. This restaurant exceeded my expectations. Definitely recommend!
We enjoyed one of our best meals on our Central Coast Holiday. The food was excellent, our server was wonderful and we enjoyed our evening!! They have a very great wine selection that is unique and delicious!!

I come to the San Simeon Cambria coastal area a lot have tried the chowder everywhere this one at Manta Rey is good so was the seafood pasta was there on Thursday 6:30 pm surprised it was very few people. It was good.
We made last minute plans to stay in San Simeon and found a hotel room right off Hwy 1. After a day of visiting nearby (within 50 miles) awe-inspiring coastline sights, we were ready for a delicious meal, and that's what we got at Manta Ray. We did a restaurant search and were surprised that there was a well-rated place right next to our hotel! We were sat immediately at a table by a ocean-view window and had drinks within minutes. While we waited for our meal, the chef visited the table next to us, at a returning patron's request, which was a good sign. The waitress was very accommodating, and didn't hesitate to bring me a different glass of wine -since the one I ordered may have been left open to long. I had the sea bass and a Mediterranean salad, and both were well prepared, flavorful, and very satisfying. If you're staying in San Simeon and looking for a fresh and tasty seafood dinner, visit Manta Ray.
Basically a little hole in the wall, nicely decorated, but not much seating. A very friendly staff greeted us and were very attentive to our needs. The food was superb! Prawns were large and cooked perfectly, vegetables were amazing and the rolls...well I could have made a meal out of those. I definitely recommend!
Quaint restaurant with delicious food. The waiter was knowledgeable, friendly and had good humor. Filet mignon was buttery, the seafood pasta dish was eye-rolling good and the artichoke Appetizer was tasty. And the chowder..ooh the chowder..yummy. Fish and chips were flakey fresh. Its a lovely place to come to for delicious food and possibly a romantic ambiance.
Service was good. Food was good. Would of been much better if offered more bread. My 3 year old enjoyed her chicken and chips. This plate was a sea food pasta. The desert was a little hard. It paired well with the Peachy Canyon wine. $$
We came across this restaurant on the internet. Upon the reviews, menu, and pictures of the food we decided to try it. I have to say that the food was good. We ordered the artichoke hearts for appetizers which were okay, not great. They had too much batter that took away from the artichoke hearts. We had the clams which were good but the broth needed a little more flavor. My wife ordered the seafood pasta which was delicious! I ordered the lobster tail which was also delicious! I will say that they are stocked in the wine department but did not have a huge selection of beer or anything else. Besides that, the staff was great and not a long wait time on food and drinks. Overall it was a good experience. If we are ever back here, we wouldn't hesitate to try this place again!

First time here, won't be our last... Prices were fair... Food tasted good, even though it was over cooked, when you order a steak medium, you want a medium steak... Customer service was good, they could have used one more person in there to help... Overall, we were happy and full...
We walk away feeling our food was ok. I spent $60 on a lobster tail that was dry. Had to send the NY steak back because it wasn't cooked as requested. Filet Mignon was fine, but needed the A1 (and that's not ok) service was great so we tipped well. We wanted to love the food but was not worth the $200 we spent.
Great atmosphere relaxing great service. Started out with shrimp cocktail on a scale 3 out of 10. Two lobster plates not good at all over cooked cold mashed potatoes cold vegetables spent $180 . Best part was the homemade orange ice cream.
We can in July 15th on a Saturday night and We’ve been coming here for about 8 years since we are locals! It has always been our favorite spot to celebrate our anniversary, birthdays and more! The food has always been absolutely amazing!! I get the Ciopinno and my husband usually steak and our daughter love the chicken strips! As always our food was on point and delicious! But yesterday was a different experience for us! In the past we have had amazing and friendly service but this time was very disappointing! Our server was rude and made us feel not wanted and uncomfortable! Almost treated us as if we didn’t have money or something! Which is not the case! Never judge a book by its cover!! We even caught her whispering and talking about us to another employee behind the bar! When I would ask her a question it was almost as if she was annoyed with us and bothered! Needless to say we will never sit down and eat while she is serving again and we come in at least 6 times a year! Fair warning she’s the younger dark haired waitress that needs a huge attitude adjustment!
This place is quaint and charming. I thought the atmosphere was very nice. The wait staff was very friendly. I had the clam chowder bread bowl, and my friend got the sampler platter. The bread bowl was great, but the sampler platter just tasted like fryer oil.
It's not too bad. The service was so so. I ordered Sea Bass as main cource, the surface was a little bit dry and brittle, fortunately it's fresh inside. Besides, the spinach was tooooo salty and I have to ask waiter for another glass of water to quench my thirst. Honestly, I love the wine, it's the best choice I made tonight!

Walked in and it was pretty dark. There was only 2 other customers there for dinner and it took 20 minutes to get our food. We ordered the sour dough clam chowder bowl which were super small, the spaghetti which had no flavor and chicken tenders with fries. The chicken tenders were the only thing with flavor. Customer service was good though, just the food was lacking flavor
I had the seafood sampler. The seafood was fried perfectly, the sides however showed zero creativity. Tepid garlic mashed potatoes in the shape of the portioned scoop, nearly uncooked carrots and broccoli. A forced 20% gratuity because of our party of five, in an empty restaurant. Neither the front or the back of the cause seemed to care. Good luck with thinking boys!
Definitely not a kid friendly place even though they have a kids menu, if you want to call it that. Small portions . Family of 6 left still hungry . Manager watched our family the whole time making sure we left quicker then the older higher paying patron that was there before an after we left . An server gave herself a 30 dollar tip even though she was awful .. said because our bill was $200 or more .... if you are not good at your job you should not tip yourself. I own my own business an tips are very important an I would never expect my clients to tip me more because they paid more then the next person. Your money is better spent somewhere else .
We seemed to be an afterthought after questing their massive wine list. The 40$ wine bottle suggested was amazing, but we barely seen our server after that. She dropped our order and ran. We were attended mostly by others when they seen our questioning faces. The bowl of chowder was awesome!!!! But was a 'cup' not a bowl. Left me wanting more. Coconut shrimp is frozen fried, not fresh made. The clams were majorly super salty. When telling our server, in one of her rare appearances, she shrugged it of. 85$/minus the tip. For wine, 2 cups of soup, and 2 appetizers? Btw if you want extra bread it's a 4min wait. This was our 3rd time there. By far the most disappointing. I'm not sure we'll return.
I am sure the food was great once, but that was not our experience. I would describe it as one level above diner. Certainly not worh what I was charged. Desert was frost bitten, dips where combined with aoile and chilled ingredients making it impossible to dip. I got the impression that I got a mix of frozen and or prepared day before food. I get the impression that the passion has left the building. Salad was great though!
Food was good service was horrible.Waitress was very rude never checked on us, once seemed to be bothered. If we have questions only waitress working seem to be bothered by anybody in the restaurant. We came from very far away to celebrate our anniversary and we had a terrible experience.Theres alot more nice places to visit around this area. Don't waste your time there.
The waiter was not capable of serving properly, was overwhelmed by a few orders of sparkling water. The (medium rare ordered) New York steak was cold but still burned, with an overwhelming taste of charcoal. Can't recommend, unless you limit yourself to the fish selection.
Not impressed at all!!!. The pasta was ok and so was the sauce for the seafood pasta. $28 plus tax for the seafood plate plus $7 plus tax for warm beer. The seafood plate only had 2 shrimps and 2 tiny scallops in it. The beer on the picture is the 2nd one that replaced the warm one. The waitress was attentive and cheerful. I really don’t think that the food quality and quantity justify the prices. In my opinion, it is not worth to spend your money there! Way overpriced and low quality!!!!!!!!
Honestly it was one of the worst meals on a while. My dad ordered a new York steak 60% of the steak was Gristle and he wasn't able to eat it. When he order the waiter asked would you like soup or salad, my dad ordered the salad. When the time came to pay they charge $8 for a side salad, and I asked him did you say it came with it? He said yeah but you have to pay extra for it..... Honestly you over paying for food that doesn't have flavor, the service is slow. You can get better food at the dinner 200 ft away.
Clean place, but I got there to sit and eat after a long days of work 12 hours. The lady that was attending she was in the back possibly talking to the cook. They were talking about shots of tequila I think I was standing up for 10 mins. As she came out she saw me and I asked her for a menu and I asked her I ordered and told her I wanted to sit down and eat there. Then she kept asking if i wanted it packed to go. I replied and said well I don't want to carry it cause they gave me room upstairs and have other things to carry. She looked at me and said I can pack it to go and I finally said okay gave her my card and paid the bill. she gave me the ice tea and then after a while I got the food and got to the room and the roll was hard as a rock the sauce was spilled all over the bag. What a waste and cold. I wanted to dine in but this place did not allow it. The only thing that was soft was on the roll was a little bit on the inside. Also too much lemon and salty. On the rest of the food.
