Early celebration for my brother’s birthday and we wanted a good Japanese place that’s not too far. Found this new place and read several good reviews from Yelp elites. We decided to try it. We had the okonomiyaki and it was okay. Think my brother could almost make it just as good lol. The premium sashimi was not cheap - 15 pieces for $55, but it was worth it. My mom loved the quality and taste. It seemed that the Dream Fish was popular so we ordered that one, but I did not think it was special. I liked the Red & White roll much better with blue fin tuna. We were still a bit hungry so we got the mixed tempura. It was perfectly fried. I also got a Hokkaido uni and Hokkaido scallop. They were delicious. I must say - their nigiri is on point. That’s what I normally would focus on, but my mom likes rolls and other items. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and taste at this place. Think the sushi chef and one of the servers were Japanese. Not very affordable and not a lot in quantity, but the taste was excellent. I will certainly be back to taste other items.
A Hidden Gem Among Sacramento’s Sushi Scene Having dined at dozens of sushi restaurants across Sacramento and around the world, I can confidently say this intimate, family-run establishment ranks among the top ten. Warm, inviting, and genuinely authentic, it’s a place that deserves far more recognition than it currently receives. Crafted with evident love and passion by its husband-and-wife owners, this restaurant embodies what true Japanese dining should feel like—heartfelt hospitality paired with culinary artistry. The menu is a symphony of flavors, each dish prepared with precision and care. On our recent visit, we indulged in eight different selections—more than we’ve ever ordered anywhere else—and savored every bite. Standouts included the Red & White Roll, Spicy Tuna Pokémon, Snow White Roll, and the perfectly Grilled Black Cod, each dish offering its own unique expression of freshness and balance. This is not just a meal—it’s an experience to be remembered. For sushi enthusiasts seeking authenticity, creativity, and soul in every plate, this hidden treasure is an absolute must-visit.
I wish I could give 10 stars for atmosphere, service, and food. Chef Cam’s delivery and expertise of his craft was unmatched — who knew such a gem exists right here off Madison Ave. Oh, and ask if they have Truffle! Sourced wild and locally from The King’s Bolete.
I love coming here! Its a small place but the food is soo yummy! We love the dragon and the super spicy roll! The chefs specials are always just so 👌 and the mini don, I think that's what it's called, I literally dream about it!!
A hidden gem for sushi foodies. This restaurant is tucked away like a Carmichael pearl waiting to be discovered. I’d liken Hito Yatai as a place for those who crave not just food, but an experience. After more than five visits, including an omakase, it’s clear this is not your typical takeout sushi joint—this is a place for craftsmanship. Take the “Mini Don,” for example: a bowl of delicate textures and flavors where the briny pop of ikura and the creamy richness of uni come together like a fleeting indulgence. Each bite feels luxurious, leaving you wishing it lingered just a bit longer. The iwashi nigiri, with its unctuous sardine and velvety oiliness, is transformed into something truly decadent. I’ve had the suzuki (sea bass), hirame (flounder), aged chutoro, and blue fin tuna nigiri—lots of varied offerings for fish. For those less inclined toward raw fish, the “Osaka-style” okonomiyaki, a hearty cabbage pancake, is comforting and savory. From tempura to sashimi, I’ve enjoyed the thoughtfulness of my meals at Hito Yatai. Even the presentation feels elevated. The assortment of physical plates feel like a kaleidoscope of ceramic and glass styles—very artful. Speaking of tempura, the chrysanthemum tempura deserves its own applause: light and airy, yet a crunch that gives way to a floral clover-like flavor. It’s served with a dashi dipping sauce (though I personally prefer a splash of soy for a stronger kick). One of the restaurant’s greatest charms for me has been the unprinted menu—conversations, not paper, guide your choices. I’ve spoken about my cravings with Chef Cam who will craft something from the stock of fish and offerings. This approach fosters a sense of trust and anticipation—every visit feels personal and thoughtfully tailored. While this is not the place for those seeking volume-focused sushi (e.g., AYCE), every bite reflects artistry and quality that enthusiasts will appreciate. The portions invite you to savor the extraordinary flavors. The staff are dedicated to authenticity and freshness. If you’re a foodie who finds joy in the subtleties of higher-quality sushi and a curated dining experience, I recommend visiting Hito Yatai.
I’ve been wanting to try this sushi restaurant for awhile and am glad I finally stopped by. The inside is so adorable and quaint. The service was attentive, warm, and welcoming. The food was absolutely delicious. I loved the Hokkaido roll and my friend ordered a customized spicy scallop roll and that was delicious as well. This will be my new sushi spot!
Excellent sushi, great food, and very kind owners and staff. We love coming here!
The place is fairly small and there are only a few staff, so it makes for a very leisurely meal. But I’ll keep going back because it’s some of the best Japanese food in the area, it’s worth the time and money! They have seasonal fish options for sushi that you cannot get anywhere else.
I think we found our new favorite sushi spot. This restaurant doesn't have plenty of seats which I honestly like because it feels more intimate. The service was great. They were very attentive and always asked how were doing. The food? Incredible. The sashimi plate was so fresh. We also really enjoyed the hamachi kama and their special chawan mushi. We are definitely going to visit again! I highly recommend this place.
This restaurant seems to care a lot about the food. Very fresh fish. Their specials even indicate if certain fish are in season or have recently arrived to the store. A must try if you're looking for high quality sushi/sashimi.
Great little restaurant for sushi and select dinner entree's. Staff super attentive and food seemed thoughtfully prepared!

One of the best Japanese restaurants I’ve been to in USA. Excellent quality ingredients and wonderful flavor combinations. Everything was so good I only got a photo of this amazing tuna nigiri. Will come back!

The best sushi restaurant in the Sacramento area, period. Expect to be greeted with a smile and seated very quickly. The service is truly fantastic - we always take our server’s recommendations and have never once been disappointed. I cannot say enough about the quality of the food here. You can really taste the difference from any other sushi restaurant. The fish is extremely fresh with each variety having a clean, distinct, and delicious flavor. Highly recommend anything from their special board, especially any items marked “in season”. I love that I can come here and order things that I have never heard of or tried before with confidence. I know that each dish will be prepared perfectly, presented beautifully, and will transport me with intricate and subtle flavors all coming together harmoniously. Love, love, love that this little gem opened up so close to us. We are truly lucky to have it in our neighborhood. Even if you have to drive it’s worth it - a must try for anyone looking for authentic and delicious Japanese cuisine.
Had an excellent dinner here. The sushi was fresh and delicious. The service was fabulous and the ambiance was equally enjoyable. 5 stars, easily.
Been craving okonomiyaki since I last went to Japan and this has been the only Japanese restaurant in the area that seems to have it. Between that, and the makerel and blue fin tuna nigiri they have amazing food. Went on a thursday night wasn't busy and I will definitely be going back.
Best traditional food and big selection of fresh fish and great sake. A very welcoming environment. Highly recommend this place as a one of a kind experience.
Hito Yatai is an exceptional Japanese restaurant and a culinary gem. The location is easy to find with ample parking in the lot. Even during peak hours, I was seated promptly. The ambiance is lively and cozy, creating an intimate setting for conversations. The service is friendly, attentive, and accommodating. I ordered chawanmushi, a unique hot egg custard soup with shrimp, fish, and mushrooms. It was a delightful surprise and a new culinary experience for me. I also tried the mixed tempura, which was superb. The variety of vegetables used and the crispy perfection of the fried batter made it the best tempura I’ve ever had. The appetizer portion was generous. My hot matcha tea arrived quickly and my cup was kept filled throughout the meal. Hito Yatai is an amazing place to enjoy a delicious Japanese meal and I highly recommend it.

Okay WOW! So good! We started with a special the Strawberry Madai and it was so good and fresh. The house salad was one of the best of any sushi restaurant I’ve had, so much flavor. Don’t sleep on the potato salad though either! For entrees we both for the special Red and White Roll and it was just so good. Everything tastes exceptionally fresh and the service was great!!! Can’t wait to go back!

Hito Yayai opened up recently near my house and my bf and I decided to try it out yesterday for the first time. The food exceeded our expectations, we got 3 sushi rolls, the rainbow, dragon and dream fish. The dream fish was the best out of the 3 and the best roll I’ve probably ever had, the other two rolls were delicious as well. We also tried 2 different types of nigiri, chefs choice so he made two rolls for us and brought them out personally and told us what they were. Both were very good. I also ordered a white peach sparkling yuzu and it was wonderful! Now the only issue I have about this place is how long it took for each thing to come out, check included. It’s a small place and there was only one woman working the front while we were there, she was delightful, but by the end of the night had so many people to help that it seemed she couldn’t keep up with it. When we initially finished our 3 rolls and wanted to try some nigiri it took me 10-15 minutes to even get her attention because she was busy with other people and never even really looked in our direction. Then it took another 15-20 minutes to actually get the nigiri which we finished in 5 seconds because it’s only the one piece. It was incredibly hard to get her attention for the check and after I finally did get her attention (she charged me immediately because I got a notification) we ended up waiting another 10 minutes for my card, but she had seemed to forget about bringing it back and I could see it just sitting on the back counter so we had to stand up and go ask her for my card back so we could leave.

Service was ok. The roll we got was very good. Good rice to filling ratio and made well. I enjoyed the mixed tempura as they used interesting vegetables like okra.Tasty, crispy, light batter. Could have been served hotter though. The only thing that was absolutely terrible was the $12 ribeye skewer. Worst I’ve ever tasted. Cold, old, tough, terrible marinade.

Fairly new sushi restaurant that recently opened in the Carmichael area. It does have its growing pains long wait times and it will take some time to turn into a beautiful butterfly 🦋 until they button things up and hopefully improve on their customer service. Otherwise there is potential and the food was pretty tasty. My tip would be to eat a snack prior to coming here and expect the long wait. The wait is worth it for sushi 🍣 ❤️ Will return and hope to give it a fiver ⭐️

I really wanted to try this place because of the review. I will say the service is great. The food however is not good and it is way I over priced. I ordered two rolls and my friend ordered a chicken teriyaki bowl, two can sodas it was 100 dollars. We were honestly shocked when the bill came we were expecting 65/70 but 100 is crazy. The sushi was not good at all they don’t have many options to choose from. Definitely will not come back.
