Avis sur Umai Cota
so impressed with this place! brussel sprouts were probably the best i've ever had, so many textures and so delicious. the scallop carpaccio was amazing and such high quality fish; i've tried raw scallop at a few other nice places in the city and didn't like the taste but it was soo good here. and the miso soup was loaded with tofu! overall such good quality for the price, and we love a byob!
My partner and I are vegan, and we've have eaten at Umai Umai before and it's always been great. This last time we went, we ordered a dish and asked to substitute the shrimp with tofu, and the waitress picked up on the rest of our order being all vegan items, so she informed us that the dish with the shrimp wouldn't be vegan anyway as there's fish sauce in it, but that she would ask the chef about it. The chef came out to our table and personally offered to make an on-the-fly vegan dish of fried cauliflower, mushroom, and tofu with a spicy-sweet Korean sauce for us. It was the best thing we've ever had at Umai, honestly one of the best things we've eaten in Philly. I don't want to encourage people to request off-menu dishes as that would probably get annoying for the chefs real quick, but I just want to express how grateful we were that the chef did that for us, and that we would definitely order that dish again should it become a regular menu item. Otherwise, the rest of the vegan items on the menu (vegetable sushi rolls, vegetable gyoza, roasted brussels sprouts, etc.) are always delicious.
Found this place after seeing a shout out on Reddit. All of their special rolls were unique and very tasty. Special shout to their lobster tempura and oyster/sea urchin shooters - sooo good! We enjoyed the intimate atmosphere as well
The food here is amazing and is prepared perfectly. The manager/Our server (Geordie) was also absolutely amazing from the time you make the reservation to the moment you leave the restaurant. The oyster shooters are a must-try and the sushi rolls we got (krakken, traffic light, and ping pong from left to right in the picture below) were all amazing but the traffic light was indeed my favorite. We also got the seafood paella and the pad Thai, both of which were very tasty! I've been here twice and will definitely be here again!
My octopus was so tender. You could cut it with the fork. My oysters were fresh and very nice. My nemo roll with cucumber wrapper was very refreshing. I rarely order dessert but what I ordered sounded so yummy. Banana spring rolls with red bean paste and vanilla ice cream was fantastic. If I lived here I would be a regular.
Heard fantastic things and was so excited to finally get to come to Umai Umai. Quaint inside to this Japanese BYOB. Few outdoor tables. Fantastic food quality. I’m still giving it 5-stars despite the terribly slow service, but there was one server for 15+ tables and we weren’t in a rush. Here were the highlights - Half dozen oysters: three different sauces on top of these small oysters Scallop carpaccio: this was fricken AMAZING. Beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Crispy rice tot: also amazing. So much so we ordered them a second time. The crispy rice, spicy tuna and avocado mousse…a party in your mouth. Henrietta roll: larger roll; absolutely fantastic and delicious Spirited Away roll: too much rice but overall decent flavor Ping Pong roll: slow flavorful profile that develops in your mouth as you chew. Yummyyyy Such an enjoyable meal. Can’t wait to come back!
Went here with friends prior to our haunted penetentiary tour! Everything was so fresh and delicious!!!!! We ordered basically every sushi roll, charashi, oyster shooters, tapas for two, miso soup, udon soup, shrimp tempuras, seaweed salad We loved it! Their spicy Mayo TOP NOTCH Will be back again, 10/10 would reccomend to a friend. Cute little atomosphere with a great waiting staff. BYOB
Finally tried Umai Umai after living in the area for a good while. Walked up at 530pm on a Friday and was able to grab an outdoor table with no wait. Some quick facts, Umai Umai accepts credit cards, but it is BYOB. The menu options were well varied with something that probably anyone would love to try. Service was great and very quick to turnaround our food. In terms of food, everything we tried was great. We particularly enjoyed the King Kong roll and the tempura shrimp appetizer, both of which I highly recommend. If you're in the neighborhood I'd definitely say you should give Umai Umai a try, we'll be back!
This place is amazing! Our first time here and i will tell you, you will not get disappointed. The best meal i had in a while :) They recommended brussels sprout for appetizer, wow so delicious, thumbs up! But everything is so good. If its your first time, you can ask what is best recommended food. Funnel cake stick in a chocolate dip for dessert, yum! Thank you for the service, stay safe.
Have had this place saved on my "Want To Go" list on Google for a while but just haven't gone yet. Ended up trying it out with a friend a couple of days ago and....loved it! It's a very cute place on the corner of Brandywine & 22nd (which luckily is a short walk for me from my apartment). We sat outside and were immediately helped as soon as I sat down. Our waitress was so great! Very friendly, did a great job of checking on us through out the dining experience to makes sure we were ok, answered questions pretty well or checked on it for us - she eventually mentioned it was her first day when she had to check on something for us but we would've never known by how professional and well she was servicing us! Now to the important part, the food. The food...was so good! For apps, we ordered the Tapas for Two and my friend got the Oyster Shooter (we thought it came with two but just one). She loved the shooter - said it felt like she had a tasty, refreshing taste of the ocean in her mouth lol - and we both felt like we could come back for happy hour and just order the tapas platter over and over. For entree, I first ordered the Kraken and she ordered the Godzilla. Both rolls were excellent! I love a good spicy mayo which my roll had, with the shrimp and avocado tasting very fresh. My friend liked her roll too and felt the strawberry on it kinda of gave it a dessert type of taste but still worked. We loved the food so much, we ordered one more roll each. I just got a Spicy Salmon and she got an Eel roll which she said was one of the best eel rolls she's ever had for a sushi place in Philly. All in all, amazing good, great service and cute vibe at this local place. Highly recommend checking them out if you love sushi and I will definitely be coming back - with wine or something next time (they are BYOB)
I received many recommendations on Umai Umai and it did not disappoint. Not having a plan for Friday night, we called up to grab a reservation Friday afternoon. 5:45 or 9:15 were our options. A great sign that we choose the right place. I went with the 515 as we wouldn’t make it to 915. Started with the crispy rice appetizer. This was essentially like 5 pieces of sushi “bruschetta.” Five crispy rice pieces, each one topped with their own sushi deliciousness. Recommend it for sure. We then went with the nigiri, which consisted of 12 pieces of the chef's selections. I wish I could tell you all twelve, but I lost track. Amberjack, tuna, yellowtail, squid, shrimp, scallop, smoked tuna, We also tried a Designer roll called Ping Pong. That was my favorite of the night. It consisted of crispy spicy tuna, inari, chives, spicy mayo, pineapple salsa. To wrap things up, we went with our goto shrimp tempura roll. That was great as well I definitely will be returning and loved the atmosphere. The staff seemed to know many of the diners by name. Such a lovely touch and this helps make it a great restaurant in our new neighborhood. Oh, did I mention, it’s BYOB too.
Cute neighborhood sushi restaurant, also BYOB. The place is small and can get busy, so expect somewhat slow service. The sushi rolls are ok, way too big, you have to take 2 bites to eat roll, some of the rolls fall apart when you pick them. Good price though.
There were two servers working tonight. One seemed to be doing a great job, and the other was my server. I won’t name names (I couldn’t if I wanted, for my server never introduced herself), but I imagine the manager can figure it out. This was, without exaggeration, the worst service I’ve ever received. To emphasize, the last time I was at a restaurant, the kitchen got my order wrong three times in a row, which was still a better experience than I had tonight. Never have I had a server that made me feel like such an inconvenience for the offense of wanting to order food and have it served to me at a restaurant. The food was amazing as always. I just wish I had the other server.
I went with a group of 6. The service was wonderful and they were very sweet about us all coming in at different times and not making us wait to sit til the whole party arrived. The presentation of the food was so pretty. The stoplight roll in particular is so bright and fun. Their rolls are very non-traditional so be prepared for that. I do enjoy the creativity but it's not the best sushi I've had. Pictured is what I ordered: the crispy rice tot (you get a single piece per order, which the server did warn us about, which was nice of her) and 3 rolls, the ping pong, eternal sunshine, and spicy tuna. Overall an enjoyable time and worth the visit.
Food was really good. Presented in a nice, appetizing way. Sat outside which was nice, but the atmosphere out there is not great. You are literally at a metal table on a small sidewalk with cars and buses going by. BUT, we asked to sit outside because it was a lovely night. Next time, I might try inside.
Very intimate neighborhood BYOB sushi spot. Not many tables in the restaurant and no music was playing, so you could hear a lot of chatter. The must have on the menu is the brussel sprouts - OMG so delicious! I will be dreaming of them. The portion size of the sushi seemed small, and I got the shrimp tempura roll where 2 out of the 6 pieces had tails on them. I am not personally a fan of that, so 1/3 of the roll was almost inedible. The flavors were good and everything was fresh.
It is okay for people who want a chilled nose vibe with a BYOB. Great place for a casual first date, when you don’t really know the person and don’t want to spent too much money on alcohol, Whole Foods is just around the corner. Would I call it one of the best sushi places - no, but definitely recommend to come as it very cute. Reminded me of Spain a bit, in terms of decorations and the weather was great +29C. Cute for the vibe, but only outside, not for the food. Food is okay.
The restaurant is cute and cozy! The food was great, I’ve never had a better vegetable roll. Only issue is my waitress was so rude, I understand she was probably stressed because it was busy but she was very blunt and talked with us as if she was annoyed. She came to our table very slow and rushed us each time. I had to go to ask for a wine opener and she responded in an annoyed tone “it should just be on your table did you check?” Then proceeded to not come back
Atmosphere: 1/1: cozy small and dim lighting make this place great for a date Service: 1/1: staff was welcoming and nice Price: 0.5/1: Prices are expensive for the amount of sushi (6 thin slices of a roll for $12) Food: 0.5/2: we had 4 sushi rolls (as they are small and 2 weren’t enough). The ping pong (not pictured) was the only tasty of the 4. The Henrietta (not pictured) tasted too much of the eel sauce. The taste of the spartan and the eternal sunshine were below average and average respectively. The crispy rice tot was also not worth the $5. Overall: 3/5: location and date night atmosphere are unbeatable. But it’s unfortunately expensive for the small portions and average tasting food.
The rolls were excellent for the price point. The fish to rice ratio was good. The fish tasted fresh, had good flavor and texture. The waitress was extremely rude to us very shortly after we arrived and inquired about a table for three. Rather than simply specifying a wait time, she snapped that it would be "a long time" and then told us to sit at the bar. There were three open tables the entire time we were at the restaurant.
