Coming from Taiwan, we're familiar with Yayoi, and this place feels very authentic - I almost felt like back in Taipei, unlike other chain restaurants that may adapt to the local style one way or another. The food is good. I like that the water comes without ice. Pork katsu is perfect - juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Rice is softer than I'd like though. When we ordered salmon and tuna don, we specified no seaweed on the rice, and I think they removed seaweed from the miso soup as well - kudos! Overall very pleasant experience. Good atmosphere, food and service. Will definitely come back!

Hitsumabushi was amazing, it was very close to what I had in Tokyo - the only difference may actually be the condiments instead of the eel itself - that's how close it was. A pleasant discovery. 🔥🔥🔥 Tonkatsu leaves a LOT to be desired however - really need to go back to the drawing board with this one. 🫠 forget about worth the money, it was almost not worth the calories and I'm not even on a diet!! But Hitsumabushi was good so still 5 stars

My two kiddos love it here. Of course the grown ups love it too. Everything tastes amazing and fresh. I was so full so I took my dessert to go. Also very rarely will I give 5 star reviews and this place gets 5 stars. Best food ever.

The ambience is very nice! The chicken katsu was super light and crispy. We love the serving ware. Very pretty. Highly recommend the Gozen. Great variety of dishes. We like the rice.

Whenever I crave Japanese tonkatsu, this is the place that comes to mind. The crispy tonkatsu, paired with the sauce and freshly ground sesame seeds, is incredibly fragrant and authentic. I’m really happy to have found such delicious tonkatsu here in the U.S. As for the salmon don, it wasn’t as enjoyable—it had a strange bamboo-like taste that overpowered the freshness of the salmon. I’ll probably skip the salmon don next time, but I’ll definitely come back for the tonkatsu.

We got a spicy tonkotsu ramen (no modifications) and a shoga yaki for takeout. The shoga yaki came with a soup and both were delicious, hot and fresh. The ramen portions looked small at first but the broth was very hearty and it ended up being perfect. I didn’t realize the soy egg wasn’t part of the ramen, or I would’ve added one extra. Flavorful and delicious. We will probably eat here again

The food and service was great. They nicely explained how to use the tablet to order food and drinks. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen and the warabi mochi. ( i ordered the tonkotsu ramen without chili sauce)

I didn't know what to expect of this restaurant as I walked here from my hotel. But I was impressed. It seemed very traditional Japanese in the menu. I ordered the Katsu Curry, a salad and a side of Salmon Sashimi. I also had an iced matcha green tea. Everything met or exceeded my expectations. Service was quick and helpful. The ordering is done through a tableside tablet. That was easy. All in all it was a great choice.

Great set menu. The wagu sukiyaki is excellent. The clams in the soup are really fresh. The fried ika (squid) is lightly battered and not overcooked. Toy definitely should try this place.

I love their rice. The Tonkotsu teishoku (set) is very great. Nice fried pork cutlet and a delicious side dish. The Oyako Tsu (chicken egg rice) is not very recommended. The sauce is too plain so the rice is rice itself. The good ones in Japan taste very different. The rice should be mixed with sauce. The egg is too dry. Dessert is good. This will be favorite place for Tonkotsu rice place.

Definitely recommend. The food was great, service was pleasant, the decor is nice with high ceiling, the tablet menu works very well (you can even see the status of your dishes and notify them when you want your dessert), so is the queue system. Price was acceptable, considering they do not charge you for tips (its not even an option) Personally I think the Ton Katsu is a bit dry, maybe the chicken version will be better, it’s fried very nicely, pork chops are inherently drier. Salmon was super fresh. Dessert a bit on the sweet side. Unagi very well prepared.

I've been coming to Yoyoi in Cupertino occasionally since around 2018, and it has always been one of my favorite spots for modern Japanese food in the area. The food is consistently delicious and feels like a more premium take on Japanese cuisine. I especially love their sukiyaki and eel dishes. The sashimi is also very fresh and high quality, which is something I really appreciate. The atmosphere is another highlight. The restaurant has a nice, comfortable setting that makes it a great place for dates or a relaxed dinner. Prices have gone up over the years, it used to be around $20–30 per person, and now it's more like $35–50 per person, but the quality of the food and overall experience still make it worth visiting from time to time.

Been looking for a new Japanese jointogo to. Visited a friend of mines house, this was across the street from him. He never visited, always busy he said. Glad I went here with him today. Delicious katsu curry, and he had sukiyaki. His broth was delicious. Katsu cooked very nicely, curry was delicious. Server was very helpful guiding us through the menu. Will definitely come back here.

Except for the price tag(no way to get the price tag in US like Yayoi Japan, haha), Yayoi USA serves the good quality of food with good service.

I missed Hitsumabushi and found this place looks very similar to what I had in Nagoya. The presentation, taste are very legit, except small side dishes are not quite Nagoya level. However the grilled unagi is very good, and rice is perfect for this dish. And the broth is tasty. Everything in the set is good, except unagi portion is small. Highly recommend!

Yayoi in Cupertino is a great choice for a local Japanese restaurant! They offer a wide variety of dishes at reasonable prices, making it an excellent option for families. It's especially good for parents dining with kids. The staff is friendly and welcoming, adding to the overall positive experience. Highly recommend!

I love teishoku, and used to look forward to the opportunities to dine out in Japan when living there. I was so happy to find out Yayoi opened when I moved back here from Japan, and that there were also a few more on the peninsula that opened around the same time. Only recently within the past 10years or so, Japanese franchises have started to expand internationally into the American market and Yayoi is one of those franchises. They serve traditional Japanese dishes that are delicious and are what you would typically find in Japan.

Went around 2hrs before closing time and we were immediately seated. I hear you usually have to wait. Had two servers who were decent (esp the female server). Ordered via a tablet. It makes ordering easier. Other than the photos shared in this review, we also had tamago yaki, which was the only dish I didn't like (too firm and salty for me), and Sapporo beer. Food there is good overall, but quite overpriced. The sushi was actually decent, which is harder to find around here. They also give free rice refills, but the portion sizes are on the smaller side so idk if anyone would need additional rice. The rice isn't bad for the area as it's been hard to find good quality Japanese food in the area. But unmemorable. Those 2 sushi rolls in the photos are just under 5 bucks each, and despite being delicious, they can be eaten in one easy mouthful. That's a decent guage for the overall pricing for everything. We paid close to 100 usd for what we ordered (!!!), but I had a nice time with good company so I may go back whilst I'm holidaying in the area. Definitely not a place I'd go more than twice on my trip though due to the price. Beer came in a pretty and chilled glass. The tables and chairs were clean. They had subtle music (reminded me of new age jazz) that wasn't blaring/obnoxious/pop. The upscale atmosphere seems just right to grab a beer and some appetisers. On the downside, they use poor quality disposable wooden chopsticks that splinter everywhere. Their bowls are cheap and do not match the nice food they serve. But at the end of the day, I took a star off because the prices are steep and that's really all.

The atmosphere is great. You order through a pad device, which you can track the process of order. If you need help, you can select the help you need from the help menu on the pad device, too. The price may look a bit higher than other Japanese restaurants, but it has already includes tip, so it's quite reasonable. There are quite a lot of selections on the menu. We enjoyed the food we ordered, except the beef sukiyaki is a bit salty for me. The presentation of food is very nice, too.

Food is yummy and fresh. Service is ok. Cleanliness is good. Check in on the tablet, right next to the main entrance, will receive a text when your table is almost ready. Place your orders, need more napkins or need help... do everything on a tablet, even request a cup of water. If you pay tips, this will be donated to somewhere else, please see their website for more info.

Service are great. Food, not so much. Ramen is very disappointing, consider it’s from a restaurant. The noodle is overcooked. Minimal amount of soup. Favor is just so so. Hard to compete against any ramen shop in town. Omaze don looks beautiful. But when you mixed it together as instructed, the mouth feel is way too slimy, even with fresh salmon. I can understand someone might like it. But combining okra, Japanese yam and natto is too much for me. Services are impeccable though. Not sure if I am getting the signature dishes, but also not sure if I want to try anything else here in the future.

Pork Katsu is always soggy, hot sake isn't even 100° F. Poached egg is cold. Restaurant is rundown, it has damage on the tables where they used to have tablets for ordering. Food quality is less than frozen foods. $30+ a person.

went back after enjoying the experience several years ago. prices dramatically increased. expect to pay minimum $30 for any meal. entire point of yayoi was automating service and emphasizing no tip. they ask for tip now. portion sizes are dramatically smaller. prices dramatically higher. asks for tip. its tonkatsu, not wagyu. lets be frank here. why am i paying $35 for comfort food and then ordering off a screen and paying my check at the entrance, all to get a blank stare at my face as the tip screen shows up on the kiosk? what part of the dining experience justifies $35 for this? would love to hear a response from the restaurant.
