Food quality, service, and prices were all very good. And if you are a fan of diners, this place has a quintessential atmosphere. And an added bonus is the stadium style fold-up seats are unusual, comfortable, and make it easier to get in and out of the booths!
love to come here with my gramie for a classic BLT n fries 🫶 vintage vibes
The State Diner was so adorable! I had the pancakes and they were the BEST pancakes I’ve ever had! My husband had the biscuits and gravy and loved his! We’re from Long Island but I’m already trying to figure out a way to go back and get some pancakes!
Love the staff there. They are all so wonderful! Can't resist a waffle with Nutella and bananas when im there.
Small place that reminds you of a time that is long gone. I sat at the counter and watched the food being made. The portions are large the price is cheap and the service was impeccable. Even though I was a visitor I was impressed and when I go back to Ithaca New York trust I will be eating there again! Thank you for an enjoyable meal and I love the t-shirt I bought!
State street dinner is the best. Great food great prices. Make sure to ask for Rosie as a waitress she's amazing and very good at her job. Rosie's the best waitress by far...
The state diner is an old school, old fashioned, diner. Diners serving Americana and Greek food used to dot the whole east coast, and many have closed down over the past 30 years. The state diner breaks the trend, and wonderfully so. Every time I go, the food is delicious. Especially the Greek specialties: Greek salads, gyros, and souvlaki. Really amazing and delicious! The location is good, the prices are low. The setting is nostalgic and fun. The diner is family run, and they really put their heart into it, and it shows!
Honestly, it's really good. It's not mind-blowing food, but it's still a very solid diner. I will be back if I am in the area. Incredibly quick service, only like 5 minutes to make my meal. The syrup is completely FREE, unlike another review mentioned. Have as much as you would like.
I don't know why this diner is only rated 4.2 stars. Visited there for the first time today and although we arrived during a busy time, we were seated promptly and met with quick service. Our orders arrived surprisingly fast and the food itself was outstanding - the Belgian waffles were some of the best I've had! The atmosphere is that of a traditional diner and the staff was friendly and courteous. We will definitely be returning!
10/10 stars if possible! tori took incredible care of us, was super kind & very helpful with my weird allergy. she curated SUCH a vibe for the place & was so so kind to everyone who walked in. will absolutely be returning forever.
Haven’t been to state diner in a number of years - it still looks the same, has the same food and vibe. An Ithaca institution that’s always worth a visit. Great food and huge portions
I always visit this place whenever we come to Ithaca. It's always busy and the food is great! The waitstaff are wonderful and I've never had a bad meal from here yet! Definitely worth a visit whenever you go to Ithaca.
My boyfriend devoured his food and mine was equally delicious. My review isn't about the food. My boyfriend left his wallet behind and the staff quickly found both myself and my boyfriend promptly on fb to tell us he left it. Everything that was in the wallet was still there when we picked it up. So shout out to the honest employees. Thank you for restoring faith and the reminder good ppl are still out there. Our waitress was pretty awesome and attentive also. Thanks again staff
A great place to eat. One of my favs are the hash browns. I can't find them anywhere else the way they make them.
Our server was super lovely and provided great service. The food was great and was truly a diner experience we were after. Highly recommend
Great experience at this local diner. Waitress was great.
I came in looking to grab a good breakfast and be able to type on my computer for a while. The staff was more than helpful with finding a table with an electrical outlet as well as making sure I was taken care of but not hovered over. My coffee cup never emptied and the waitress (Amber) was smiling and genuinely happy to be there. They have guest wifi that can be connected to as well as a comfortable atmosphere that reminds me of the diners in my childhood. Their food is great and portions were perfect. The server told me about the owners sourcing locally and making all their own products - like the sausage, eggs and home fries. 10/10 I would come again In a heartbeat!
I found myself on state street, thinking what you have for lunch and realized I was right down the road from the state diner. I figured I'd grab a burger and fries and sat at the counter. The cook was great and very personable. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with a over medium egg on it. It was one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. It was delicious. And the fries were great and were heaping on the plate. I walked out for 15 bucks including tip. I'll definitely be back!!
Me and Hubby dropped in the this little diner mid day and food was delicious and reasonable. They serve breakfast all day. The waitress was really nice and it food was served in a jiffy and tasted so fresh. No complaints would return if we return to the area.
A Classic Diner Experience with a Twist On our drive home from the Finger Lakes Region, my wife and I stopped at the State Diner in Ithaca for a late breakfast/early lunch on a Sunday — and we’re glad we did. The interior is exactly what you’d expect from a classic American diner: lots of cozy booths, shiny metal accents, and mirrors that give it a nostalgic feel. Everything looked clean and well cared for. We were seated in a corner booth with fold-down seats — something neither of us had seen before. It was a fun, quirky touch that added to the experience, though it may not be the best option for those with mobility issues or anyone who might find it tricky to get in and out of tighter spaces. As for the food, it was exactly what we hoped for: simple, satisfying diner fare. My wife had a cheese omelet, and I went with the Western. Both were well-prepared and hit the spot. The coffee was solid too — always a must at a diner. Bonus points for clean and well-maintained restrooms, which is always appreciated when you’re on the road. All in all, if you’re in Ithaca and craving a classic diner meal, the State Diner is definitely worth a stop. We’d happily return.
We visited Ithaca for the weekend to celebrate our daughter’s birthday and took her out for breakfast. This place was phenomenal! Food was great and came out quickly, the restaurant was clean and well kept, and the service was amazing. I didn’t catch her name but our server was a blonde woman who went above and beyond, even going so far as to run out and pay our parking while we juggled our toddler and infant and finished our meal. We will definitely be back on our next visit to the city☺️
Stopped here on a whim on our way through. Didn’t get any pics of food but we got a burger, a buff chix wrap and a ham and cheese sandwich. Everything was cooked well and tasted great. Served hot and quite quickly. Every single employee was attentive and kind and that was a big part of the 5 stars. So often we go into a small restaurant with our toddler and are not greeted quite so warmly , likely because of an expected hassle. Here - our son was treated like an individual and for that we were grateful.
It's a wonderful place with a lot of food options. Personally, I go for the Burger's because they seem to be some of the best in town. The service is great, and you get seated almost immediately. The atmosphere is pretty laid back with classics playing through the speakers. This is a great place for a family of 2-4 people.
This was a true diner experience. The special omelette was outstanding, the French toast and pancakes were a hit and the sausage gravy and biscuits also had raving reviews. Our coffee stayed filled to the top and the orange juice was probably not fresh squeezed but was tasty enough that you questioned whether it was. All around solid experience. The home fries and omelette did have to be salt and peppered, but that’s permissible at a diner. My home fries were crispier than others but added a nice texture so perhaps working on consistency might be the only note. Very college towny vibe.
I grew up in Ithaca, I used to eat at the State Diner all the time. Went to school with members of the family who owns this establishment. They've always had high quality food and high quality service. Every time I've been there, the food has come fast and has been tasty. If there's anything to lament, it's that the menu has shrunk. Prices have gone up too but I call both of these things: keeping up with the post-covid economy. They still have Spanikopita, but I miss the souvlaki. Or maybe I just didn't see it. Anyway, I highly recommend.
This place is wonderful. The walls have mirrors and it was almost like walking into a mirror maze, which was... unexpected but amusing. The chairs in the booths fold down, which is also unexpected but amusing. Our waitress was nice and fun. The food was delicious! Will definitely go back since I can only eat so much food at once and their menu had some very good options that I want to try!
I love the State Diner, it's been an Ithacan staple as long as I can remember. The food is consistently delicious and the servers are nice and friendly. Coffee flows like water here, burgers are cooked to perfection, with crisp and tasty fries. The cooks mean business and it's fun to watch them slamming out orders, they're good! With that hometown diner vibe, it's hard to go wrong at the State. I know I'll be back, you should visit too!
An amazing breakfast joint in Ithaca. We had a delicious breakfast platter with a veggie omelette, home grown fries and toast. The setup is more like the ones we see in a classic Hollywood movie, very authentic and the food was fantastic, had a perfect start to the day. The pancakes were nice as well. There are a lot of options in terms of spread for both meat and vegetarians. Loved the vibe & Loved the food. Do visit for some delicious food when near the finger lakes region.
Exactly what a diner should be. Pleasant and efficient staff and great food. Best patty melts and French fries around, great breakfasts also. A bit pricey now, but seems like everywhere is.
Amazing service and food. The servers really helped my family and I feel at home and our infant daughter had a blast playing with some of the takeout cups provided by our server. Food was classic diner choices, but they do them extremely well. Best burger for brunch hands down and the pancakes were huge!
A true classic diner gem! Stopped in and was blown away by the quality of the food and the cozy, nostalgic atmosphere. The place has that perfect old-school diner vibe — warm, welcoming, and authentic. I had the omelette, which was cooked to perfection, and the pancakes were absolutely amazing — fluffy, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth good. Definitely coming back. Highly recommend if you’re in the area and craving a great breakfast or brunch spot!
traditional American style family restaurant, not a modern fancy environment but “traditional, old time” like the place in 70’s movies. 9am already lots of people there. Quickly seated with big welcome smile. Food delivery fast, tasty fresh and yummy. refill coffee every minute. Good place for breakfast .
If you love classic American diners with a retro touch, then State Diner in Ithaca, NY, is a must-visit. This cozy little spot on State Street has all the nostalgic vibes of an old-school diner, complete with booth seating, bright red accents, and a welcoming atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to enjoy comfort food, whether you’re a local or just passing through. For lunch, I ordered the Greek Burger with Fries and a handmade milkshake—a combo that perfectly hits the spot. The Greek burger is served on pita bread instead of a traditional bun, adding a nice twist. However, the patty itself was a bit dry and could have used a bit more seasoning. The fries, on the other hand, were crispy and golden, exactly how you’d want them in a classic diner setting. Now, let’s talk about the real highlight—the milkshake. This thick, creamy shake, topped with whipped cream, was the definition of indulgence. The retro-style ad on the table proudly states, “They’re Delicious,” and I have to agree! Whether you go for vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry, it’s the kind of treat that brings back childhood memories. Overall, State Diner is a charming little gem in Ithaca that serves up a nostalgic dining experience. While the burger could use a little more flavor, the atmosphere and that killer milkshake make it a spot worth checking out. Perfect for a laid-back meal with a touch of old-school Americana!
I ordered the special omelet, it had bacon, Swiss cheese, mushrooms and tomatoes, it was delicious 😋, I also ordered the biscuits and gravy, and they were even more delicious 😋. My husband ordered the meat lovers omelet, he must have loved it cause he ate it before I could get a picture..lol...I also had the macaroni salad and I have to say that did not taste good at all, tasted like it had been sitting for awhile, like it went sour, but the waitress was so nice, I told her it tasted funny and she took it off my bill. I would definitely recommend going to eat here.
The food was great! I had the gravy fries and a grilled cheese on rye with bacon. The sandwich was perfectly buttered and grilled. The gravy is delicious. Our server Tori was THE BEST!!!!

A throwback diner from the 50's. Food was as you expected. Service was great, and food was comfort breakfast food. Place was clean and maintained. Only thing that threw me off was the $4 coffee.
Walked in, a bit of a chill @ 9:25am. Coffee is very good (hot). Ham/ Am Cheese Omelette. Fried onions with Hash Browns White toast. $20+ The only real problem that I have is not the price. Everything is high in Ithaca. That I don't understand Either. I've been in the food industry for over 40 years. The Omelette it's Ham is minced ham? I didn't get the full effect of the Omelette. I only tasted Ham Maybe because they only use (2) eggs instead of three (3).
Decent diner, on par with any other. Seats were strange and a bit uncomfortable but the service was great!
The server was nice and the food was good. The menu prices are marginally higher than advertised but only by 1-2 dollars I went for breakfast and it was pretty packed, which makes sense.
Old style diner, expectations were low. They delivered on all accounts except for the coffee, which was just bad. Service was on point, the sausage gravy was really good (rare these days), thick bacon and great omelete.
I really love breakfast here! Amazing pancakes, large omelettes and delicious home fries. Staff is great and very on top of things! A stop on the NY dinner tour, great spot.
Classic rail car diner that is a part of Ithaca culture. Unique booths
Breakfast was good. I was just little shocked on the prices. But I understand. Also the meters actually work so bring some change for parking on the street.
Open almost at the crack of dawn. And the servers are good. The menu looks straightforward but is actually mildly confusing. For example, you have to mix and match different items to "assemble" a lumberjack breakfast. The French toast is priced as a singular item, so you'd have to add eggs, sausage, and bacon (all priced as sides) to create it. By that time, you'd find that the chicken and waffles, is the most honestly priced item on the menu (It's not 22, it's 25). I ordered the two eggs scrambled with sausage and swapped the toast for the cinnamon toast. The cinnamon toast was great. The eggs (amazing) came with homefries, which were okay. We were easily seated and there are booths in the back for parties larger than 4; you can probably stick six in there and be fine. Standard seating is flip down booth style chairs. Very interesting place, I'll give it that.
It’s been my first visit although I have been in the same vicinity for several months when visiting from Canada! I liked the retro look of the place however the stalls are very small and confined thus not allowing one to be comfortable specially a large man like myself who has trouble sitting on tight spaces! I barely fit today in the small booth surrounded by plexiglass windows… sorta reminds of when we were under the COVID pandemic and isolating in tiny spaces… the coffee was excellent, my eggs and toast were fine, the ham was a bit over cooked , grits were a bit dry and the sausage patty I ordered extra was not worth the price! I don’t think I will be coming back…
Food was great! Our server was not tentative. No refills on an extremely small 4$ cup of pepsi. Prices were outrageous. $13 for two eggs, potatoes and toast is insane. I suppose you could say being unhappy with prices was on us because we could have looked at the menu before we went. 4 stars
It’s always great to eat in an independent restaurant, not a chain place, and even better if it’s a diner. Extra points for being a really old diner. The vegetable omelette was tasty, and waitress was friendly and accommodating. Just one minor complaint: mushrooms should always be fresh, and never canned.
The food was classic diner fare and the service was impeccable. Really, what more could you ask for from a diner!

This place has a great breakfast. Must come eat here while in Ithaca. The service is very good and the food is worth the money. The staff are awesome!!!
Enjoyed our breakfast the other day. Amber was friendly and attentive. Pricing is a bit on the high side for diner food though. We liked the overall experience
Went for breakfast. Ordered meat lovers omlette w/ American cheese, breakfast potatoes and toast. ($17) Lots of meat, no cheese. It was still good. Also ordered 1 waffle. ($14) Yeah, don't order a waffle. It was good but $14 was a bit excessive in comparison Ordered unsweetened ice tea (small glass, $3 no free refills), no spoon to stir my sweetener, had to use the fork I was eating with. Not terrible but we won't be returning.
Great place, but way over-priced. $6 for a glass of apple juice? $6 for a very greasy sausage patty. It was $149 to take 6 small kids out to breakfast. We were traveling through so thought this would be a cheap, but good meal since it was such a cute diner. It was cute, but food was average and not worth it.
Came here after checking out a couple of outdoor recreation/sports stores (REI, EMS which is sadly closed). My husband and I each ordered breakfast food (we each had 2 eggs platters which comes with homefries and toast) and 2 drinks (seltzer water and Sprite) as well as a large milkshake to go. Service was great. Server was funny and personable. The 3 star rating is for price gouging us on the eggs. Each egg platter was $11.00 but extra $8.00 surcharge for 4 eggs. Comes out to $2.00 per egg. And egg prices have come down in the past 2 weeks both in supermarkets as well as farmers' markets here in Central New York. My husband did notice that there would be surcharge for eggs, but it was for 50 cents per egg. Good food, just gouging customers is not the best practice.
The ham and cheese omelette was good. The home fries were not. Definitely over priced.
The food and service were good however I was absolutely floored by how expensive it was, we paid $75 for breakfast for two adults and two children, a meal that would’ve cost $35 anywhere else.
Nice little dinner in Ithaca. Typical dinner atmosphere. The food was priced fairly, it tasted okay. Not bad yet nothing to write home about. I got French toast , eggs 🍳 and bacon 🥓. I had planned on getting a milkshake to go (yes at 8 something in the morning lol). Unfortunately I did not due to how cold it was inside. With it being my first time there I'm not going to place blame on anyone. Could have been that they just opened and the heater hadn't caught up to speed yet. IDK. The booths have seats that have to be folded down to sit on. Like being in a baseball stadium 🏟️. However I did notice in the back they have traditional bench seats in those booths. The waiter was nice, on point and quick. My meal came to $24.00. I want to go back and give it a second shot to see if the heat was just a fluke or not.
Very disappointed with my experience at this diner. I was really expecting more of like a family, welcome, well priced experience, but unfortunately didn’t find this here. The food is ok and pricey $$$, our order was incorrect and our waitress was rude and seemed overwhelmed, rather than in control and friendly. Ambiance was just ok, for a diner this was a let down. No free parking, wouldn’t go again.
Came here for lunch and was surprised to get pretty authentic diner vibes in the middle of Ithaca, New York. I'd say my experience was alright, but nothing special. I got the biscuits and sausage gravy, which came out to ten dollars. As a whole, prices here are pretty high on average and something that definitely hold this place back from being somewhere that is above average and a place I'd come back to. My food was average. Service was fast and effective, on the other hand. My server was super prompt in getting our orders in and food came quickly. Water was refilled quickly, so I can't hold anything back there. Overall, this place is pretty mid - food is alright, prices are a bit high. Probably won't be back but you won't die if you eat here. If you want a diner experience, you can get it here but it's not some wonderful one.

Meh. Started with burnt stale coffee and then waited over 40 minutes for an omelette & chicken fingers.... overpriced for a diner. $6 for 3 tiny pieces of bacon- come on mannnn.
We are not coming back here. This is a run-down, not very clean looking place. The food is mid, coffee tastes like machine oil and even if I wanted a refill it was never offered. The toasts are burnt and the add-Ons (paid for) never came.
Good food but the wait to get served takes a very long time, especially on the weekends when it’s particularly crowded. Getting a table was only about a 10 minute wait but the wait to get the food we ordered took almost an hour! (About 47 minutes to be exact, which is absolutely ridiculous) Classic diner decor which is nice. And classic diner food menu. Surprisingly, they charged us 75 cents for mayonnaise! It’s pretty much the only diner in downtown Ithaca - with good diner food but particularly slow service - so it’s a really a take it or leave it situation unfortunately.

Very expensive, staff was slow and not attentive and there were only 3 other customers. Burgers come by themselves, no fries or sides unless you order a the burger which costs $19.99. even then you'll be lucky to get a handful of French fries. I paid $8.99 for a very "pain Jane" burger. Just a bun, lettuce, burger, mustard. Burger was dry, thin, and unseasoned. Diner is going for the usual, small and inexpensive family owned feel yet does not achieve this. Would not recommend.
The food was just average. My grandsons burger was over done. They waitress was attentive. Automatically adding 20 % tip is sneaky. We will not return.
Do not go to this diner. No reason for the prices to be this outrageous. 20 dollars for a Mediterranean omelette? Come on people. There are better options in Ithaca, NY. Lincoln Street Diner and Sunset bar and grill. Save your money and go elsewhere.
