06.12.25 update: Some places are just worth visiting even with the extra drive. Maki-Yaki Express here in Laguna Hills is definitely a very good place for sushi. Same owners - very nice and humble two-team folks! Excellent array of dishes on their menu. I'm picky when it comes to pricing but if the quality and freshness are top notch, then I'm good with paying the price. Deeleeciousness on food for sure! The atmosphere inside fits with the adjacent stores. People come for the food anyway. Huge plus if owners are nice to customers👏👏👏 Reasonable prices and fairly quick service. A few of my favorites are salmon-mango roll, mango-avocado salad, shrimp tempura udon, jessica roll, shrimp tempura. Very accommodating on platter orders. Place is small in size, although not a place to impress your girl. This is one of THE places to go for good food!

First and foremost this place is amazing. The service is fantastic. Mom and pop shop. The owners are so friendly and welcoming. The moment I stepped foot through the doors I was greeted. They have tons of specials. Which is really reasonable being their surrounded by these office buildings. I came in for lunch on my break been passing by this hidden gem since I been working around the corner. The bento box is really good but who doesn’t like a good bento. Their salmon skin hand roll is so savory and crunchy cooked to perfection. Don’t let the portions fool you you may think that the portions are small yes but you do defiently get full. I also ordered their spider roll which was really tasty. Super crunchy and their unagi and avacado bowl is fantastic as well. If you are ever in the area and you are doubtful of coming to this spot don’t they will take care of you and ensure you that your well taken care of. I will most definitely will be returning here when I’m in the mood for Japanese food thanks guys

Hidden Gem. The food was delicious and service was very friendly. No price gauging esp on the drinks! Loved that there was pictures of menu items so it’s easy to decide. Will def come back again! 👍

This place is really good and very fair prices. I usually get the bento box but I've been trying the sushi lately. The rainbow roll is very flavorful. The staff is very friendly. Never had an issue here so far. Definitely recommend this place.

Great food here. Don't get me wrong, it's not a fancy dining place by any means, but don't let the looks fool you. I love the firecracker and the hot night rolls. Stuck between a dry cleaner and a 7-11. Usually not crowded. Good spot if you are near and happen to have a craving for sushi.

Freak place to grab a quick bite to eat such as bowls, sushi, or bento and alot more. I would recommend!

Really nice spot to pop in and get some sushi. The veggie roll was such a surprise. I usually get them with another roll just to make sure I'm getting a balanced meal, but this was genuinely really tasty on its own. New favorite lunch spot 🥰

GREAT food! Edamame, miso soup, and rolls were excellent. We had the Mango and Salmon roll, Hot Night, jalapeño bomb, and baked lobster roll. Would highly recommend this place! The inside is small but has tables to eat in. Very friendly people too!

Small, unassuming, family-run spot right next door to a 7-Eleven. Not world-class good but it's a good and a relatively inexpensive place to get your Japanese fix. Extensive menu and friendly service. This place is within our regular lunch rotation at the offices I work at.

Maki yaki is a hidden gem in Laguna Woods! Prices are great and their food is always fresh!! So hard to decide what to order because everything is so good! Family run establishment and the owners are so, so kind and fantastic at what they do.

Place we dine in everytime my son's having special awards or achievement. Place is small but always crowded because the food is great. Love it.

The person who took our order was super nice and explained what was in each roll for us. And the food was out fast. Great customer service.

CUT THE MENU IN HALF. Focus on all the best sold items. Cost of goods is too high today to be offering 50 items on a menu. Sushi IS LITERALLY THE BEST IN TOWN. Focus on that and cater to the newer crowds available in the area. This business is so successful!

I ordered the chicken teriyaki for only $14 with tax and I got a hefty serving of chicken and vegetables that was tender and juicy and extremely flavorful. The man working the register was nice and friendly and it only took 8 minutes for them to make my food. More people should check this place out and overall I was extremely surprised and blown away.

Great Japanese food

The food is pretty great. It is a little small on portion size for the price and for being a self-service restaurant. The spicy pork bowl is pretty excellent.

Small hole-in-the-wall place. The food is flavorful and they have a good variety of sushi and other options on their quite large menu. Parking is difficult during certain times of day, lots of food places and 7-11 next door.

Go to Maki-yaki Express if you are feeling like sushi and don't want the fancy restaurant...saying that reminds me of Carls Jr's pitch about their six dollar burgers without the restaurant cost. This place is not fancy its a small restaurant in Laguna Hills near Seven-Eleven. When you first walk in, you will be greeted by a very friendly Korean lady. There are a lot pictures of all the various types of rolls so you don't need to know what the roll is called just know what it looks like. I ordered the udon combo with tempura shrimp and crunch roll for about 7 dollars. My friend ordered the Spicy Tuna roll. After adding a drink this was about 18 dollars not bad for 2 people. (half the price of Niko Niko. Don't get me started on that place -1 star) If you order in you will eat on actually Japanese bowls and plates. If you order out you will get everything packed in separate packages, which is nice since every order comes with a small salad and miso soup. If you are looking for the highest quality sushi this is not the place, but if you are looking for above average sushi minus the wait and cost go to MAKI-YAKI! Highly Recommend. Great for take out!

I predict their sushi would be just as good as any other, big and popular sushi restaurant because the flavors, smell, and the taste of everything is reaaally good. Service is 5 since it’s easy and straightforward. You get your dish served on the counter, and you pick it up to bring it to your desired table. They offer everything you need to eat on a table nearby the Ordering Counter. Atmosphere is a 3, but I only say that for people who are picky. I personally don’t care much about atmosphere; I just go out to eat, so I give it a four. It’s just not modernized, and it does look run-down, but I’m very accustomed to shops (especially Asian shops) being that way. The radio plays music and ads. Overall, this shop provides you what you can’t make at home.

The man that answered the phone was very bullish with my wife and kept correcting her. My wife called in and ordered tekamaki and sakemami... They gave us two California rolls, one topped with tuna, one topped with salmon.... I mean I guess the right fish was in there somehow.

Food was very good. But after waiting almost a half hour was given the wrong order.

Food is good, but I’ve never been to a place where you have to pay for your hot sauces… we already pay for our food, so it’s common sense it should come included with packets of hot sauces, and shouldn’t be an additional charge!?!!! That’s crazyyyy

Went here for a late night snack and it said 24 hours on Google Drive all the way for irvine to find out that it isn't 24 hours and it was closed....I was really disappointed.
