Best grilled chees sandwiches on planet earth. Worth the trip!
The food is expensive. But I promise its worth it! Go on a weekday if you don't want to wait in line or fight for a seat.
For many years, long before it was called the outpost, I've enjoyed outdoor lunch at the bottom of Chair 14. Very relaxing and laid back, it is a great place for a rest and to soak up some sun while taking a break from the skiing. A warm sunny day and low wind is a must as there is no wind break or inside seating. There are ample and clean restrooms available, and like all places in Mammoth free water. They've added a take out bar and the take out food stop keeps changing the name, it is currently called the Melt House, but the food is always good. You can bring your own food and drinks and just relax at the picnic tables. I've never seen it so crowded that you couldn't find somewhere to sit, and most people don't mind sharing their table with you. The have added a fire place in the last couple of years but that is usually crowded. Since it is far away from the Main Lodge, it is rarely crowded and it does feel like you are getting away from it all.
A great mello place for lunch. Big open deck with 2 converted steel containers with bench seats & gas fire place. If it's cold, windy or snowing maybe not best but if nice sunny day it's great. Food, restrooms & a bar.
Nice little spot to grab some lunch after s couple runs. Delicious grilled cheese... I got the pepper jack one and man was it good. They also have a bar and soups. Couple fire pits to chill at while eating
Gourmet grilled cheese and great selection of soups, cold beer with a great selection of local breweys. Great mountain and lake veiws So glad we stumbled upon it. Highly recommended just don't tell to many, also like the quaint setting.
Great food here and beer.. also music is being played. Has a few fire pits.. it's really cool
Best grilled chees sandwiches on planet earth. Worth the trip!

Great grilled cheese sandwiches
Get the grilled cheese sandwich
Great
Everything on the mountain is expensive, but, this location seems more reasonable in price with very friendly service. Generally, friendly service everywhere at Mammoth, but prices have skyrocketed since the mountain was sold.
There was music and two little mini living rooms made out of large storage containers with fireplaces and outlets, and also there were restrooms and it's never too crowded would go there again
Great views, great music, great beer and wine. Enjoy the warming "huts" and grab some grub from the melt house. Get up for it!!!
Love it! Hidden, never crowded, great beer/drinks and a nice environment to warm up and get lunch!
Excellent toasted cheese sandwiches and soups. Our group had a number of different ones and they were all fantastic!!!
Went downhill since Nick Brady left but by virtue of his presence a 5 star establishment through the ages. Long live Brady
Improved setting over previous years. Nice design. As usual, food is improving but not stellar.
On a sunny day, simply the best place to hang out if you are skiing Mammoth
Cool spot to take a breather and get warmed up with some fire pits
Great grilled cheese sandwiches old school patio deck... Love it
Wow... what a great place for a ski break... Amazing views!
Great food. Amazing spot to eat lunch.
Great food fun atmosphere and amazing views
cheeky cheese sandwiches, great playlist, and Andy making a lovely experience.
Great melts, lovely pair setting, great in spring
Beer and grilled cheese as far away from civilization as you can get. Boundary bar.
Amazing views especially after a recent powder dump!
Something a little different. Spectacular surroundings. Check out the melted cheese sandwich.
The only freaking restroom on the mountain that has hot water, and it's on the back side. Go figure!
grilled cheese and a great selection of canned beers.
Delicious. Goat cheese salmon capers grilled sandwich
Great grilled cheese sandwiches and fast too
Great views and cool place to hang out
Newly remodeled oasis. Great grilled cheese sandwiches
Love hanging on the back side!
The Outpost wasn't open when I stopped by. I did get to see the upgrades done over the last couple of years. Two fireplaces, the bar is now separate from the food counter. Still the best restrooms on the hill.
Every time I visit mammoth mountain for skiing I try to make it to this cozy corner to have a yummy grilled cheese sandwich. Just a heads up you should be an intermediate skier to visit The Outpost.
Great spot to stop when you want a quick break from all the blacks, or to just chill out with your kids. Only blue runs around it. The grilled cheese and soup is amazing.
Didn't they the food, but enjoyed the scenery, solitude and escaping the crowds on the "back side of Mammoth Ski Resort. Nice sun deck and less crowds on this section of the mountain. The ski chairs are old school but it adds to the experience. Wished we had spent more time on this area during our stay on the mountain.
Great place to chill with a beer and a bowl of chili or grilled cheese. You are a little exposed to the weather but convenient for backside skiers.
Fancy grilled cheeses, all kinds of brews with the backside of Mammoth as the backdrop?!? Yes please! Definitely make sure you get over to this great little retreat on the mountain!
I hadn't been out here in a season or two, but they added a melt restaurant, redid the bar area and added a fireplace. Pretty cool place to escape some of the larger crowds, although it can still get bad on the crazier days
Gourmet grill cheese and good beer. Perfect. I stopped here while riding the bike park, but you can drive up in the summer.
Hot soup and sandwiches, cold beer and 👌👌 🎶 on rotation. Outdoors with epic views. Ski in/out only 🏂🏼⛷️ (during ski season, not sure about operations & access during rest of the year)
Love what theyve done with the place! Expanded a bar and a couple lounge spots on the deck. Great mid day stop but dont be late, it closes at 3pm sharp everyday.

The Outpost is one of the coolest places to take a break while skiing at Mammoth. It’s located mid-mountain and has an awesome outdoor setup where you can relax, warm up, and enjoy the views before heading back out on the slopes. The atmosphere is fantastic. There are fire pits, picnic tables, and plenty of space to sit outside and enjoy the mountain scenery. On a sunny day it’s an amazing place to stop, grab some food, and recharge between runs. They’re known for their grilled cheese and soups, which really hit the spot when you’ve been skiing all morning. Simple comfort food, but perfect for the mountain environment. Sitting by the fire pits with a hot meal while looking out over the snow-covered slopes makes for a great ski break. The setting is what really makes The Outpost special. Surrounded by mountains and trees, it has that relaxed mid-mountain lodge vibe that makes Mammoth such a great ski destination. If you’re skiing Mammoth Mountain, The Outpost is definitely worth stopping at for a break, good food, and one of the best mid-mountain hangout spots on the hill.
Great soups and cheese melt. Only place on the mountain to get this food.
I’ve never been here but my coworker’s wife’s brother’s girlfriend said they had clean bathrooms.
Best Grilled Cheese in town during winter
Best food on the mountain ...festival vibes ...come out and get yourself some of that great grilled cheese in the sky and say hi. I also work here. Also there is beer and wine as well as the high west bar pouring drinks on the snow cat.
Best place on the mountain to eat and just hang out. I'm a little hesitant to write this review bc I don't want anymore people to come back here, it's quite crowded. Plan to wait in a line up to an hour for food at the busiest times. You may or may not find a place to sit right away, so be patient.
Wow this outpost on the backside is newly remodeled to please everyone looking to take a well deserved break from shredding the great Mammoth Mountain terrain. New outdoor Bar, fireplace, cozy seating, cornhole games, couches, restaurant grill etc. Definately a great pitstop with no crowds whilst riding the back side.

These are some serious grilled cheese sandwiches! And the sun soaked viewing platform is a great place to watch folks bomb the Hemlocks.
Great place for grub on the backside
Good time
Great in good weather
Great escape.
Shh....
Wish they didn't pre make the grilled cheese at an outdoor place (it's always cold) but it's still delicious when you dunk it in the super tasty tomato soup!
Had a great artisanal grilled cheese sandwich. Beautiful setting and great service. Highly recommended.
My favorite place on the mountain to stop for beers and food. Expensive but more old school environment.
Great stop for a beer. Hot, good food. It's beautiful up here.
Stunning views and some great skiing. Well worth the trek
Good beer choices and shorter lines than McCoy's.
Incredible food but need to be a way to figure out lines
Just fun after some skiing. Music a bit too loud.
smelled a little funny but other than that great food
Great Location, good beer, sandwiches
Outdoors drinks and snacks in between skiing
Gets a 4 since the boundary bar ran out of 2 of the 4 draft beer selections with no replacement during a weekend! Otherwise amazing views and a great seating area to hang out at. The fancy grilled cheese sandwiches were tasty but I would have liked it more melty.
Lots of seating with a few container living rooms. Beautiful backside beers. Unfortunately, that's the only alcohol they serve. Sometimes, you need a hot cider with some special sauce. Nonetheless, it's arguably my favorite bars on the mountain.

Pricey
Crowded
Cozy, open deck stop for a nice break. Limited sandwich selection, but spacious uncrowded tables.
Wow crowded but a great place to hang out
Grilled cheese not as good as I had hoped.
Gotten much, much nicer in recent years than it was before. Now there's an outdoor bar, two semi-outdoor fireplaces, and it seems like a lot more seating. The grilled cheese variety isn't bad, but none of them impressed me. And the accompanying soups, while classics, also failed to rise to the occasion. It is a ski resort, on the backside, so the fact that it's this good is a plus; but the fact that it's not actually very good in reality tempers the pricing.
Melts can be hit or miss. Sometimes the cheese isn't even melted and the melt isn't hot. Sometimes it's great. Soups are good. The place is extremely busy around lunch time on the weekend, so be prepared to wait in line for 20 minutes. The bar serves beer and wine only, no hard alcohol. There are power and usb charging outlets in the shipping containers below and to the side of the fireplaces. Just bring your own charging cable (none are provided).
Outdoor eat and drink stop. Lots on tap, and grilled cheese combos with soup. Sit on patio. Real restrooms. Food is ok and fast, even with crowds. Nice stop on a warm ski day

Expensive and not very tasty
Great food, poor service, questionable bar tending practice.
The grilled cheese sandwiches are premade. We got the jack cheese one and the provolone one. The jack cheese sandwich was decent, and at least the cheese was melty. The provolone sandwich was completely un-melted and way over-flavored. The tomato soup was basically from a can and totally unremarkable. This would all be ok, if the pricing matched the quality. We ended up paying $40 for two sandwiches and two soups. Absolutely insane pricing. Do yourself a favor and go to McCoy station instead. It's about two lifts away and worth the trek. This used to be a chili dog place, what a downgrade!
Nice place to chill and eat !your own food! Don't buy those toasts which are not worth the price at all... Plus cashier didn't even return me change... Yes it was like a dollar and few cents but it is my decision to give that tip not his...
