We had a fantastic evening at Hiyakawa—warm hospitality, generous portions, and an omakase that reminded us why this place is so special. Chef Royce’s talent really shines in the precision and balance of each course. The shrimp nigiri was the standout for us—cooked to perfection—closely followed by the otoro with caviar, which was a wonderfully generous touch and beautifully balanced. My friend loved the monkfish liver, and I was especially impressed by the baby eel nigiri. Chef Jaimie’s dishes were also memorable—especially the steamed tofu, which was incredibly silky and tasty, with a delicate, well-balanced flavor. The perfectly fried shrimp head was a treat, and the refreshing dessert ended the meal on a light, clean note. Overall, an excellent experience and one we’re still savoring—highly recommended.
We were able to get a last minute reservation at the chefs table/sushi bar on Wednesday, December 10. We had an absolutely wonderful experience sitting at the sushi counter. 5-star service, attention to details, top quality and variety of nigiri available were the highlights. For example, chef had dishes I have never had like the mature yellowtail that is significantly tastier than the yellowtail you get in other - even Michelin star - sushi restaurants. Truly a special experience and highly highly recommend.
This was really Experience.-you’re paying for more than just food and a Miami atmosphere. You’re paying for inexperience that you’ll remember where every detail was taken into place not only were we greeted and served with the upmost of respect care as well as love for what they are doing at Kiki Yawa. For example, we ordered a cold soba appetizer, and the woman herself brought the dish to our table and shared with us how she spent two hours, pulling together the noodles with the flower that was brought in from Japan. Another example is our lovely waitress who grew up in Japan as a child and moved to Miami later in life and has loved working at Hikawa and was so warm and caring as well. Enough about the service, the food itself was so fresh and so well put together to be eaten in a special way where everything was thought of. before the meal started, we were given hot towels to clean ourselves and throughout the meal there would be constant cleaning of hands and cleaning of the table to prepare for their next course even the eating of courses was thought of where you dip the noodles for the first part and then you later, get a soup with the remaining sauce for the hot water. Or like the Sonata appetizer where you eat the fish first from a presentation and then they go back and fry the fish to have these chips fish chips that are apparently a very high in calcium Now onto the food, there was really nothing I didn’t like besides the eel and cucumber roll. I didn’t think it was anything special other than that I would probably order everything again. Sugata Mori was the first dish it had fresh fish that you ate with a ginger soy sauce and then one in the back and they deep-fried it the bone so you can crisp it into chips and serve with lemon and salt. What an experience. Gindara miso is a black miso and melts in your mouth for sure wonderfully prepared and wouldn’t say it’s the best cod miso so I’ve ever had- seas bream at amazónico was better or even paperfish Waygu gyoza- another great presentation being served with the air fryer crisp grease, which is basically cut into with your topic to get to the dumpling dumpling itself was just a very, very good and flavorful wagyu gzosa Thursday special soba- they serve this on a full board and thought of everything. They had a side dip where you would make your own wasabi and scallion mixture and then you would have the soba noodles which you would dip into the sauce and eat served with a side of tempura vegetable. When you finished the soba noodles, they would cleanser palette by bringing over hot water to that soup sauce that you made and return it into soup for you to finish drinking, which was so so so yummy because I had a hint of wasabi spice from that I put into the soy sauce.
Truly a unique and authentic experience that is not easy to find in South Florida. Celebrated a birthday here and it was tough to find a part of our evening that wasn't made flawless by the excellent staff that work here. Their sharp attentiveness and warm and welcoming service made it a memorable night along with the stunning quality of food. The chefs clearly have a passion for culinary art and it was a privilege to dine here. We cannot wait to return.
Great place, easily recommended. You can opt for an omakase-style tasting menu experience (which takes about two hours) or order entirely a la carte. Either way it's not exclusively sushi; for example the tasting menu includes some simmered and tempura dishes as well as dessert. The sushi menu has a purist or enthusiast emphasis with a strong variety of fish, flown in multiple times per week. This includes both a standard year-round menu and an evolving seasonal list. Very nice atmosphere and vibe to the place. Just right; kind of a small and intimate space, nice enough feeling without being formal and stuffy, friendly and attentive staff. I could certainly see coming back here on a return visit, perhaps a different time of year to see how the seasonal menu changes.
Amazing restaurant and an unforgettable experience! Everything was top-notch — from the warm welcome at the hostess desk to the impeccable service, perfect ambiance, and talented, happy chefs preparing incredible sushi right in front of you. The fish is as fresh as it gets in Miami. Truly 120 out of 100!
An incredible experience. The service was excellent, attentive, calm, and very welcoming. The food was also outstanding, everything tasted very fresh and delicious. Definitely try the tuna, eel, and yellowtail, they are amazing here in any form. This place is absolutely worth visiting!
Hiyakawa is a diamond that sparkles with a quiet confidence in a city overflowing with shimmer and shine. 5 stars really doesn't do it justice. After hearing rave reviews from friends since its inception, I didn't think twice when deciding where to have dinner for my 40th birthday. Despite going in with high expectations, they were somehow exceeded across the board. From the warm greeting upon entry, to the effortlessly playful spirit embodied by each and every member the wait staff, to Chef Jamie eagerly bringing us a second round of dessert, it couldn't be more clear that this team loves what they do. I've worked in both casual and fine dining, explored restaurants around the world, and extensively studied the work and philosophy of Danny Meyer. Hiyakawa seamlessly weaves elegance with fun, and I'd be hard pressed to come up with a handful of other restaurants I've been to that compare in the hospitality department. Oh, and then there's the food! THE FOOD! I could say so much about the food. But, I'll control myself and keep it brief. Everything was amazing, simple as that. The nigiri was mouth-watering, the wagyu; world class. You really can't go wrong. Two dishes that I'll specifically mention, for they could easily - and tragically - fly under the radar, are the Eel Tempura and the Lamb Chops. The Eel Tempura infused the perfect dose of Umami to our first round. I've had Lamb Chops at easily 100 restaurants, and I'm pretty sure these are my #1 favorite. I think both of these dishes are seasonal, but if they have them, I highly recommend them. As for the sushi, there's not much I need to say. They serve top shelf fish with expert preparation. They do have quite a variety, so I'd suggest taking the opportunity to try something new! Given that it was my birthday, Chef Jamie prepared a full spread of desserts, each beautifully presented, and their flavor just as vibrant. Fortunately, we were the last remaining guests, so Jamie was able to hang out and see just how much we appreciated her sugar skills, as it took us all of a few minutes to devour every bit, prompting her to rush back to the kitchen to throw together one last hurrah, which was literally and figuratively, the icing on the cake of an absolutely incredible dining experience... Along with one of the Miguel's (Hiya has TWO, and they're both fantastic) sneakily printing out a photo of me to use as a garnish on my drink. We left with our bellies - and our hearts - full. A perfect dining experience.
Amazing place! It only has 8 tables and sushi bar seating, so the atmosphere is quite intimate. Interrior design is simple yet so beautiful and memorable, just like the dishes they serve. Hiyakawa offers both a la carte and tasting menus. We went with the tasting menu and experienced all types of dishes they offer. The presentation is wonderful as well.
Service was quick and very friendly. Started off great right out of the gate. Sushi was delicious and offered some unique fish selections. If you’re an uni lover make sure you get the Japanese one in the salt water, amazing. Had to order a few rounds of uni. I also like the transition to wagyu beef and lamb chops after a great selection of sushi. The overall experience was great and would recommend to any sushi lover. Cheers.
Incredible omakase night with Chef Hiro and Royce! Truly an authentic omakase experience. Cannot wait to come back.
Just had an amazing dinner experience at this Japanese restaurant with my wife. The food was absolutely delicious, especially the nigiri which was incredible! The service was exceptional too. Miguel and our initial server gave us some excellent recommendations. It's worth noting that the prices are on the higher side, but definitely worth it for the quality and service we received. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy a fantastic meal in a great setting!
This is my favorite Japanese restaurant and very authentic by the way. The quality of the food can't be compared to other Japanese restaurants in Miami. I understand that some people complain that is "pricey" but you get for what you paid for meaning... you pay for fresh fish. Not to mention that all the staff are super friendly making the whole experience more fun. If you are a true foodie and do appreciate authentic Japanese food you definitely have to give this a try, specially the Omakase experience.
Our first Omakase experience was exquisite. The sushi was *chef’s kiss*. The photos, highlighting some of the pieces, do not do it justice. The service was impeccable. The ambience was elegant and refined. Their stoneware was beautiful. They paid a lot of attention to detail, which we loved! Will definitely return one day.

If you seek an unforgettable and authentic Japanese dining experience in Miami, Hiyakawa is the epitome of excellence. Your taste buds will thank you, and you’ll leave with memories of a meal that transcends the ordinary.
The best service I’ve had at any restaurant. Its upscale, of course it is pricey. But you certainly get what you pay for! I was eating in the dinning room (not omakase), but when I stood up to leave, the chefs said goodbye to me. I was thrown off because I am used to the chefs ignoring everyone who isn’t having the omakase course. Enough about the service- YES the quality of the sushi is amazing! I wouldn’t make this my everyday sushi spot, but I have no regrets.
The omakase experience at Hiyakawa was pure bliss. Each piece of sushi was a true work of art, crafted with incredible attention to detail. We also complemented our omakase with a few additional dishes, including the wagyu katsu, which was absolutely incredible. The interior was stunning, with tranquil vibes that made the entire experience even more enjoyable. The staff was accommodating, and attentive. This was truly one of the best authentic sushi omakase experiences in Miami—I can’t recommend it enough!
Simply delicious with a minimalist vibe. Excellent service and lovely staff all around. True art meets cuisine with high quality sushi. An absolute must if you’re a sushi fan, we shall return.

Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply treating yourself to a delightful meal, this restaurant promises an unforgettable experience. Don’t miss it!
Love this place. It’s def more laid back than the usual 10 seater omakase establishment but still has some elegant elements. If my bank account allows, this is def my go to sushi place. However it is on the pricier side so I save it for a treat. If you want to treat yourself to some delicious sushi and Japanese food, come here! If you’re a uni lover, def come here.
Enjoyed our dinner here. The place is small and on the casual side but the quality of food and attention to detail make up for it. It’s not cheap but the only items we found truly overpriced were the nigiris as it’s mostly around 15$ per piece and even if the taste is good, it doesn’t quite justify that price. We really liked the Wagyu gyozas, the tuna makis and the fatty tuna. Aubergine dish was very nice as well. Service was on point and so was communication regarding the dishes.
After a week of mid-ass South Beach sushi we ventured to Wynwood for an anniversary dinner. 100% blown away by the dishes and FOH class at Hiyakawa. Each presentation was sublime, sake pairing was thoughtful and personalized, and the Miguel x2 + Shaun team made sure every little detail was perfect. Can’t wait to come back thru next time we’re in MIA
Best Sushi spot in Miami hands down. The aesthetic of the restaurant, chefs, excellent waiters/staff, and sushi makes this a 10/10 restaurant that rivals many of the restaurants I experienced in Japan last year. Highly recommend.
Chef Hiro is a genius! This place top to bottoms immaculate and the food is only of the best quality. I’m my opinion it deserves a Michelin star!
Excellent atmosphere, Food and service! One of the top 3 places that I have been for Japanese food so far. Arigato gozaimasu!
just had one of the best sushi experiences I’ve had in a long time. From the caviar-topped scallops to the melt-in-your-mouth Otoro and Chu Toro, every bite was a masterpiece. The Wagyu bites and lamb chops were equally unforgettable, and the array of other dishes only elevated the experience further. I left feeling completely reinvented—light, refreshed, and already craving my next visit. The flavors, presentation, and energy of the place truly made it something special. I highly recommend dining here. It’s more than a meal; it’s an experience.
Hiyakawa is simply the best Japanese restaurant in Miami, the fish is incredibly fresh and the rice is out of this world! The service is impeccable and Luis the GM who is also a sommelier guided us through the sake list flawlessly and now the design...wow! A5 Shabu shabu was amazing!
Truly the most amazing dining experience of my life and when I say experience I mean EXPERIENCE. Miguel the general manager was incredible at guiding us through the dishes, pouring our glasses, and making us belly laugh. The service never lacked. Every napkin that was dropped by the table was instantly replaced and our table always wiped off every drop. Milo our server was educated on every dish and made sure we had everything we needed. I recommended this place to every person I know. You need to come here at least once. 11/10
Very delicious, very expensive omakase with literally perfect service in an intimate setting. No notes.
My boyfriend and I dined at Hiyakawa tonight for his birthday, and it was spectacular! We enjoyed our meal at the bar, lucky enough to witness the sushi making and partake in conversation with the talented chefs. The food was phenomenal, the space itself was minimalistic and stunning, and the staff was incredibly personable and made us feel extremely special. They feel like a true tight knit family unit, and it was the perfect place for us to celebrate such a momentous occasion. As we departed, we were treated to a gesture that left us feeling truly privileged. The entire staff had assembled in a single file line near the exit, and as we passed, they bowed in unison. This unexpected display of respect and appreciation was both humbling and deeply touching. It was a moment that elevated our dining experience from merely excellent to truly unforgettable, making us feel not just satisfied patrons, but honored guests. 10/10 recommend for an authentic and delectable Japanese cuisine experience!
Hiyakawa Miami is a true gem among Japanese dining experiences. From the moment you step inside, the serene yet modern atmosphere sets the tone for an unforgettable meal. My recent visit was nothing short of exceptional, and it was made even more memorable thanks to Alvaro, the owner who adds a personal touch to every guest’s experience. The service at Hiyakawa is impeccable—attentive, knowledgeable, and warm without being intrusive. Every team member seems genuinely passionate about ensuring a seamless dining journey. The menu is a carefully curated selection of traditional Japanese dishes presented with a contemporary flair. The sushi and sashimi were incredibly fresh, with each bite showcasing the skill and precision of the chefs. What truly sets Hiyakawa apart is the overall experience. Alvaro’s welcoming presence and dedication to quality make this restaurant feel like more than just a place to eat—it’s a destination for culinary art and hospitality.
Hiyakawa offers a delightful journey through Japanese cuisine, serving as a true testament to it. This charming restaurant blends modern aesthetics with a warm, inviting atmosphere. Upon entering, you’re greeted by the welcoming Miguel. The menu is extensive, the food is delicious, revealing a symphony of flavors and textures. Each course is meticulously crafted, showcasing the chef’s skill and attention to detail. The sashimi is incredibly fresh, with each slice of fish melting delicately in your mouth. Service is attentive without being intrusive. The staff is knowledgeable about the menu and eager to offer recommendations based on personal preferences. The atmosphere is perfect for both intimate dinners and casual outings in small groups. In summary, Hiyakawa is a gem in the local dining scene, offering authentic Japanese flavors and an exceptional dining experience. Whether you’re a sushi aficionado or new to Japanese cuisine, this restaurant is worth a visit.
Hiyakawa sets the standard for hospitality and culinary excellence in Japanese cuisine in Miami. The entire team, from the owner to the manager to the other employees just understands how to anticipate a guest’s needs and deliver special moments. These moments accompany what may be the most exceptional seafood quality of any sushi restaurant you can find. The atmosphere is relaxed and serene. Spent my birthday dinner here and they made it the most memorable
Exquisite selection and exceptional service defined my experience. Miguel was ideally suited for his role. I couldn't have had a more exceptional experience. The food should earn a Michelin star rating, as every dish offered an expert exploration of flavors.
Absolutely blown away. Service was impeccable and the sushi was so fresh. The rice was perfectly balanced. We did the tasting menu but of course had to have the Wagyu Sando. The wine selection was a beautiful fun funky white. The experience was top notch I wouldn’t be surprised to see this restaurant receiving a Michelin Star or two.
Well worth the time and money. Cozy atmosphere with incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff. Miguel and Milo’s recommendations never disappoint
Hiyakawa Restaurant in Miami is a true gem for anyone seeking oustanding Japanese cuisine in an intimate and stunning setting. My dining experience at Hiyakawa was exceptional. The food was incredibly delicate, fresh, and featured surprising new tastes and subtle flavors, with top-quality seafood as the star. The service was first rate, and the ambiance was absolutely exquisite. It's a place where incredible food is elevated by impeccable service and a beautifully curated atmosphere.
One of the best sushi spots in Miami. Alvaro and his team know how to create an inviting atmosphere, attention to detail, amazing service, and unbelievable sushi. 10/10, would eat here regularly.
Incredible dining experiences with the best service!!! We celebrated our anniversary here and ordered a mix of sushi and hot plates - the scallop nigiri was to die for and so was the grilled eggplant. Miguel suggested the yuzu creme brûlée for dessert and it was also delicious. Thank you Miguel!!!! All around 10/10.
Came into town for business, so glad we had the chance to try Hiyakawa tonight! We tried the tasting menu and it was amazing. The service, food and atmosphere were absolutely beautiful. Everyone was so friendly and inviting it made for a wonderful experience. Will definitely be back on my next business trip!
EXCEPCIONAL!!! lOutstanding service, a beautifully designed space, and an unforgettable omakase experience.
Amazing food truly a gem in Miami. The staff is incredibly attentive and honestly the quality of fish and the diverse dishes served are incredible. Really don’t miss out on this place if you have a chance to try it. Miguel will be sure to take care of you !
Excellent experience. The staff, Amber and Miguel, were friendly and made strong suggestions. The staff overall were all very nice to deal with. The quality of sushi was incredibly high and enjoyed every piece. Strongly recommended visiting here.
am from Japan and used to live in US before..graduated from CIA in NY 1981.and am in the Hospitality industry over 45years.been traveling many countries and had many good and bad Japanese but this Hiyakawa? is exceptional one. Food and service both are very rare to find they can or should open in Tokyo and be able to compete with local restaurants for sure I took many other Japanese there and they ALL just can't believe the level of their excellent performance very special place..love to come back again and again
Hiyakawa is hands down the best and most inspired sushi restaurant in Miami. Make sure to sit at the Chef’s Counter. We got a really intimate experience between Chef and Diner, and the service made us feel looked after without being obtrusive. If you like Nakazawa and Masu in NYC or Brothers in LA, you’ll love Hiyakawa. Great sake list too!!
Incredible experience. Very high quality and unique fish. I was on a very tight timeline to catch a flight and chef royce was super accommodating in getting everything out within 30min. Thank you chef royce, will definitely be returning!
Excellent experience! I came here for dinner and since the moment I walked in till the moment I left everything was amazing. Food is exceptional. Service and atmosphere amazing. We followed the recommendations from the server and didn’t regret. Dinner without drinks $103 for two (excluding tips). Very good price for the quality you get. Highly recommend.
“I would pay anything for this food.” It’s that good! An authentic Japanese experience in the heart od Miami perfectly orchestrated by chef Masayuki, visionary Alvaro Perez and a perfectly trained crew that takes you on a journey to Japan. Hiyakawa offers the most exquisite Japanese food, with an unparalleled service in a impressively designed space where minimalism and art collide. I’ve been many times and it just gets better and better!
Miguel and Miguel really showed us a good time at Hiyakawa. We were generously welcomed on arrival, introduced to the menu with care, and the atmosphere was comfortable, but educational. The elevated experience was full of laughs and, not to forget, incredibly fresh and delicious. We loved the Japanese needlefish from the seasonal menu, the Japanese scallop with key lime and delicate salt, and the secret combo roll with Japanese pickle was a flavorful suggestion. Both yuzu desserts were fantastic. Atmosphere is a 10/10. Loved the florals and the flowing river wooden structure.
***2025 UPDATE*** This place keep being 100/10.... ***** Outstanding service. Long list of wines and sakes. Japan has arrived in Miami. You can tell these guys know what they are doing. I highly recommend the oh-toro Tamaki with pickles (the best Tamaki i have ever tasted since I was in Tokyo). They have a seasonal menu that is very fresh. The whole evening was expensive but it's 100% worth it. I'll definitely go back again with a smile on my face.
The experience delivered at Hiyakawa is unmatched; what a treat it was to be served sushi, nigiri, sashimi, and the like, of superb quality with an impressive show of hospitality from the staff. I was very pleased with my time spent tonight. Big thanks to Luis and Miguel for your genuine hospitality.
This Japanese restaurant is truly in a league of its own when it comes to authenticity and freshness. Their commitment to serving only the freshest fish is unparalleled - no frozen fish here! They source their ingredients daily and go to great lengths to ensure the utmost safety and quality. The service is nothing short of excellent, with a staff that’s not only friendly but also incredibly attentive to your needs. The restaurant itself maintains a consistently neat, clean, and inviting ambiance. If you’re seeking an authentic Japanese dining experience in Miami, look no further - this place is a true gem.
This is my first review of a restaurant, so that should already tell you how unbelievable an experience I had last night. I came to celebrate my birthday with their Omakase experience and it was one magical journey. The quality of fish is like nothing I ever experienced. Since most of their fish actually comes from Japan, you can really taste the freshness, flavors, and textures unlike your standard Japanese restaurants. Every bite was unforgettable and every dish was unique and special in their own right, I honestly could not pick a favorite. Not only was the food perfect, the service was equally as great! We were served by the owner himself, Chef Masayuki Komatsu and his incredible sous chef. They are just unbelievably hospitable and genuine people. You can tell Chef “Masa” has a genuine passion for satisfying his customers and providing them with an unforgettable experience. Both he and his staff really went out of their way to make sure I had a special birthday. Thank you Chef Masa and everyone involved. That was an experience I’ll never forget!
10/10 I went with a friend during Art Basel week and we had such a great experience. 8 course meal we complemented it with a small bottle of sake. I also got an Anago hand roll as an addition before the dessert which I highly recommend! You’re paying for a true experience. If you’re curious about whether to get a tasting menu (omakase) or a la carte, choose omakase if you have only had basic Japanese cuisine in your life. This will open your mind up to just how many different cuisines there are in this world that aren’t accessible to us in the U.S., ofcourse unless you go to a restaurant like Hiyakawa.
As a Japanese, this is the only place I would call authentic in Miami. The balance between sushi rice and fish, is beyond amazing. For their service and quality, it makes sense that the price range is higher but its Miami so compare here to others, it definitely worth it!
My favorite and most visited sushi place in Miami! All the fish is so fresh and they change their menu a lot so every time you go you get to try something new. The staff are also very sweet and attentive. All around an amazing restaurant.
What an incredible experience. Amazing selection of niguiris, everything so tasteful and fresh. The rice was something else, perfect bite, seasoning and temperature. Unfortunately we couldn't try the omakase because our toddler was with us. But the a la carte menu has excelent choices and the maitre Miguel was spot on on the recomendations. The service deserves a michelin star by itself. Very discreet, glasses never empty and super attentious. Jerry was fantastic as our waiter and demonstrated knowledge and passion about the food that was being served. Great dining.
Hiyakawa is a truly amazing experience from beginning to end. Highly elevated in all aspects: service, food and ambiance. Definitely the best sushi in Miami as each piece melts in your mouth! Obviously rice is the most important and the rice here is perfection. My boyfriend and I feel so welcomed, Luis, both Miguels, Chef Royce and Chef Masayuki are amazing and are at the door to say good night as we leave. It's unlike any other restaurant I've ever been to.
Another high-end suhi restaurant that will not disappoint! The quality of the fish, who is imported from wherever the best can be found (often Japan and Spain), is just a present for the palate!! No fuss, just the perfect texture and combination to enhanced the flavor of the fish in its purest form. Chef Masa is welcoming, charming and unpretentious while his kraftmanship and knowledge of this Japanese art is clearly superior. A beautiful restaurant in the heart of Winwood where the simplicity of the material used for the decor, light wood waves and concrete, highlight the simplicity, perfect balance and softly rolling flavors of the fish above the lightly pink vinegar flavored rice. The chef selection/ omakase will unfortunately come close to $200, like most of the top restaurants in Miami (trust me I do miss the much more affordable restaurants visited through my trips abroad!) so it is a treat, but quite a delicious one!
Truly top notch omakase experience rivaling anything you’ll have in NYC or LA. The design of the restaurant is but a precursor to the exceptional food and service.
In my opinion the best sushi I have had in Miami thus far. Phenomenal service from whole staff. A true elevated dining experience.
The sushi and lamb chops are absolutely to die for. Owner and Chef are truly passionate about their craft. World class restaurant.
Despite being small, Hiyakawa still has enough room for two parts: a sushi counter, with Omakase only, and a half-dozen tables for larger parties offering an expanded menu. Both ‘sections’ are in one beautiful room (shoutout Bea Pernia), visible from the streets of trendy Wynwood (see picture above), and receive regular attention from the multitude of staff on-hand (I estimated a 1:3 ratio). That said, Hiyakawa was my first time in a sushiya since the start of COVID-19. My first true omakase experience in over a year. There was zero chance I wasn’t sitting at the counter. Seriously the best and most authentic Japanese outside of Japan. This place has it all, Miguel will make you feel at home, absolutely loved it. Can't wait to come back!! 5*
This was the most amazing experience overall! We were greeted by Miguel and the GM Miguel too. They took care of us the whole night. We did the omasake - chefs choice- and each dish seemed better than the one before. It was delicious! The ambiance & vibe were so sexy. It was great for a date but could be lovely for a girls night too!
It's such an amazing place, the food here is really high quality and is one of the best places I've been to for sushi. I went with a few friends and we all agreeded it was amazing both in staff service and food. I highly recommend coming here with some friends 💝
Having eaten at plenty of top sushiyas in Japan and around the world, we can safely say Hiyakawa is among the very best. We visited twice in four days and the standard was top notch both occasions. Chef Royce is so talented and personable it’s a joy to watch him work his magic at the counter. Service from Miguel and his team is flawless. Special mention to the hot kitchen chef (didn’t catch her name) rare to see such respect and attention given to hot dishes too. We also love the vibe and energy of the restaurant. Overall 11 out of 10!
Step into Hiyakawa in Miami and you'll find yourself in what feels like a japanese zen garden—an oasis of tranquility, blending serenity and sophistication. Warm wood tones punctuated by splashes of artful lighting. The ambiance hums with a gentle buzz of conversation coupled with the blissful tap of chopsticks and the gentle clink of sake ceramic cups, the latter which is selected by you from a thoughfully curated box. Now, let's delve into the food. The sake was smooth, aromatic, and the perfect companion for what lies ahead. Of course you must begin with the edamame as the opening act, a familiar tune and staple at these types of places. I was unsure about the wagyu gyoza dumpling, but my hesitation was quickly quelled and dismissed as it was super juicy, tender and flavorful. It's the dumpling diva that stole the spotlight. The sakana karaage was a crispy delight where the exterior crackles in your mouth. Next, on to the sushi lineup. The wagyu nigiri is like butter on a cloud, melting with each delicate bite. The salmon is a splash of coral elegance on your plate. The mackerel, kanpachi, yellowtail, scallop, and snapper all showcase the ocean's finest. Now, I've got to spill the beans—while everything was top-notch, the fish nigiri was the understudy, good but not stealing the show. And for the sweet finale, the yuzu cream brulee is like a dessert mic drop. Creamy, citrusy, and the perfect ending to a sushi saga leaving you with a dessert induced smile. The service and hospitality is impeccable. The staff at Hiyakawa are like culinary ninjas, silently anticipating your every need and making you feel like they are there just to exclusively serve you and only you.
The big positives are the service and ambiance. We were warmly greeted by the staff and both Miguels were our servers; both brought something to to our dinner. One Miguel was knowledgeable with the menu and the other ensured we were having a great time. He even went outside to take our picture to ensure we got the right pic. Who does that?! Obviously Miguel. Amazing touch. Now the food. Overall the food was very good but just not great. Of note was the scallop salad, the sugata-mori that was delicious as sushi but then they flash fry the bones to eat as crisps, the uni was decadent, the wagyu nigiri had a very nice smokiness to it and melted in your mouth. The decor was very tasteful and thought-out. It is very modern with very intentional details. They give you a little brush for your soy sauce, they have a chilled tear drop carafe to pour your sake and if you are having omakase they let your chose your own sake glasses. I love when places do this. For a meal that was close to $500, one would expect several WOW moments but we didn’t have one unfortunately. My take away is, the place is really good but just not worth the price tag.
the food was delicious, we mainly recommend the wagyu gyoza (seasonal), chicken karaage, shishito and scallop nigiri (seasonal)! our main complaint was that we had a reservation at 9 and weren’t seated until 9:40 but that’s due to the limited seating and previous party taking their time, will definitely be back!
The food was good, shishitto peppers were delicious, the rest nothing extraordinary. Service at first was really good, friendly, personalized. We order more of the shishito sauce and they told us that was impossible, they couldn’t get us more of the sauce. We were talking between us about the matter and I guess the waiter didn’t like our complains. When we ask for the dessert menu the waiter told us that he was sure we wouldn’t like the desserts, either the desserts over there are really really bad or he was being super rude.
I have family of 4 (2 adults, 1 teenager and 1 kid) to dine in. We sat on a table. We ordered 3 omakase ( 8 courses tasting menu), along with my kid miso soup, chawamushi, and some nigiri and a tekka roll). Omakase tasting menu costs $180/person. I ate at Sukiyabashi Jiro (Sushi of God in Tokyo) before. Nowadays people are obsessed with the word "Omakase", but have no idea about omakase and how to differentiate good or bad one. Hiyakawa omakase in my opinion is only average, not worth the money. My son had miso soup (costs $6), this is just an average miso soup, no like adding any special ingredient. Chawamushi $10, its just regular dashi added steam egg Bafun Hokkaido Uni, but they dont specify the grade of the Uni, i tasted it, i think it is Jo grade Uni only based on the color and texture of Uni. I am Shima Aji friend- but tonight the shima aji doesn't give me that buttery taste, the texture was firm and fleaky bite as usual. My daughter ordered uni temaki, sushi chef brought the temaki to her, there are a piece of uni dropped off from temaki on the plate, the sushi chef just wiped it to his hand and put back to his sushi bar ( YES, I SAW IT CHEF!!) The temaki is not even the regular temaki suppose to be. Overall i dont think it's worth the price.
I called and it led to an automated message asking me to text the number. Fine, no problem. I messaged the number and asked about the Omakase pricing - to which I was clearly told it was a tasting menu for $200/person (picture attached below). As soon as we arrived to our reservation, the vibes were immediately off. We were seated at the sushi bar, and all the chefs seemed uncomfortable to see us there. They started explaining the menu, and then we told them we were here for omakase. To which they started asking what we wanted, and we had to keep reiterating that we trusted them as we were here for the tasting menu. Finally, the tasting menu began. The chef stood in front of us and hand made rolls as he explained what they were. This was a cool experience, but the chef seemed unsure and kept asking us what we wanted, which confused us as we understood that we were there for the $200 omakase tasting menu. The waiters kept coming around and refilling our water cups, which we assumed were included, only to find out that each small bottle was $8 - costing us $24 just in water by the end. Only one person in my party drank alcohol, and when he ordered a particular sake, the waiter brought out an entire bottle. My friend clarified that he only wanted a cup, but the waiters nonstop refilled his glass without asking - costing us an extra $60. At one point, one of the sushi chefs even asked me to “lower my voice” and “stop talking so loud”. The chef eventually asked us if we were full or wanted to keep going, which started ringing alarm bells in our heads, to which I realized that maybe this wasn’t the tasting menu we had clearly discussed beforehand on the phone, and in-person. Upon realizing this, I asked the chef what the price was - to where he listed the name of every single item we ordered, but still didn’t give us any numbers. This is where everything took a sharp turn downhill. All four of the sushi chefs started to go from friendly to unfriendly, and the manager got involved to help us with the pricing. They went in the back and came back 10 minutes later to tell us where our bill was at in terms of price. I showed the manager the text messages I exchanged, and asked why this wasn’t a preset $200 meal. He responded saying “Oh, that’s for the special reservation you have to make 2 weeks in advance. Thanks for the feedback, we’ll try to make it more clear in the future.” After this, and seeing how expensive the bill was after only eating 8 pieces of sushi each, we asked if we could just have a hot item to make us full, then we would go. After I asked this, we were quite literally laughed out of the restaurant. The sushi chefs looked at each other and the manager, and started laughing at us. We immediately became extremely uncomfortable, and we wanted nothing more than to leave the restaurant. After the chef made our last roll, we said we were finished, and waited 10 minutes - or what felt like hours - for them to bring us the check so that we could leave. After seeing the outrageous $200/person bill for half a meal that didn’t get us close to full, we were so uncomfortable that we decided we would rather pay than argue so that we could leave as quickly as possible. Immediately afterwards, we all drove down the street and got Cuban sandwiches so that we could actually feel full.
First off, anyone giving this 5 stars has NO Idea what it’s like to eat great sushi. The sushi is about a 6/10 but the prices of the place are as if it was a 10/10. I thought for $250 +++ it must be world class. It’s nothing of the sort. The other reason you could charge that much for average sushi is if the place had amazing ambiance. But it’s in a store front of a low end apartment building. This space should be for a metro PCS or maybe a pollo tropical - not a super expensive sushi spot. There are about 10 tables packed in next to each other 20 feet from the street. I can’t see how anyone is paying $40 for two pieces of their nigiri and returning, thinking it was good. The dessert was tiny, a little tiny pot of melted sorbet. If it was half the price is would totally work as a go to weeknight sushi spot. But if you are looking for a dining experience, you will be severely disappointed.
Unfortunately this was not our favorite omakase we’ve had. We were told we could customize the omakase menu and asked for no uni and no scallop, of which they brought us both of those and we had to send back. None of the fish or dishes wowed us, and it ended up being $1000 for 3 people for not that much food. We were stilled hungry at the end but did not want to order more due to the hefty cost of the omakase. They also added portions on without asking us. For quality, taste and price, I feel like there are so many better options unfortunately and we would likely not be back :/
A real disappointment unfortunately. I came here in November 2025 when Royce took over and it was literally the best meal of my life. I told the everyone I knew how incredible this place was and had looked forward to coming back for months, it was almost the complete opposite experience this time. The service was very indifferent towards our table, we did the omakase menu but requested no Uni or Scallops, and the first dish was Uni where we politely asked again for no Uni for the table, two courses later was another course of Uni where we reminded them again we asked for NO Uni to which they replaced it with salmon roe (not exactly a fair swap in value), then the next course was scallops, when we reminded them about the scallops the waiter just responded “ya, but these are really good, they’re like my favorite I’ve had” lol. We are reaallyyy easy going having worked in the industry before, but when you’re paying $1,000 for 3 people… these seem like the things you shouldn’t have happening. I’d suggest looking at the bill carefully, we ordered gyozas (those were solid) to which the server said he took the liberty of adding 2 more to the order of 4, but then he ended up charging us for two full orders… which should have been 8 not 6… Then we asked for one order of the Lamb (fantastic) and they charged us for 2 orders which was a relatively small portion to have been 2 orders. All in all after tip we spent $1,000 on 3 people, all the fish was mediocre at best, the service was sub par for the amount we spent, and we overall left hungry and feeling like we had just been the victims of a robbery. I’m hoping it was just a rough night for them, but I can’t say we will be giving it another try unfortunately.
Not worth it Omakase experience. It would be a - 2 ⭐️ They called me to confirm rez, advised of special request that wasn’t fulfilled (birthday candle). The service wasn’t there for what’s the price of this experience. Extremely pricey compare to the value you are getting. The sushi quality is 5.3. We were interrupted most of the time when they were cleaning the plates, when we asked for the bathroom no one stated to walk us there or show us the way. The sushi chef was nice (used to work in nyc and understand the level of service). $$$$$$. Try it on your own and live your own experiences. Def not coming back ever to this place. The Uni was not enjoyable at all and it wasn’t from Hokkaido as stated. Not worth it.
