Ordered a team lunch for the office and we were blown away by the size of our meals! Food was great. I'll definitely order again!
First time here and had a fantastic time ! VERY impressed by the friendly service ! Salads were so fresh and filling . The owner came over and chatted with us and made us feel at home -Thank you !
Insane food always! What a way to finish off a meal with an ice cream sandwich that changes daily. Service at the bar is always top notched. From daily specials to an ever changing beer list . Who wouldn't want to make this a weekly stop. Parking is great .
Lots of drink choices, excellent nosh menu, staff was top tier
Oh my goodness, the staff is incredibly attentive, and the owner is friendly and visible. I waited tables for 27 years, there is literally NOTHING untoward I could possibly say about Celtic Cavern!
We are among the regulars who are on first name basis with the manager, chef and many of the servers. Everyday menu (some variations by day of the week) food is excellent and priced reasonably. Good selection of craft beers. Specials on St. Patrick / October Fest. Average spend $40-$50 before TIPS per person including drinks, shared appetizers, entree, dessert and coffee.
I have lived in Portland (across the bridge) for a year now and didn't know this was here because I am a hermit. BUT, now I do! I am so glad I found this place and it will be my go to until I move away in a few years. The staff are the most welcoming people I have met in this area of the country in over 15+ years. I feel like at home there; that doesn't happen often at all to me. Everything is....perfect, even when it becomes very busy, in which they are focused with people and the structure of flow. The cavern is cozy , out of main street site, has great parking (huge) in the back. I love it. I might have a favorite food also! Gotta try more to be sure ;)
Middletown sour is phenomenal . I love their take on a good whiskey sour. Everyone was friendly, fast and it was very busy. Definitely coming back. Btdubbs the pickles are delicious but spicy :)
I brought my granddaughter here for a late lunch on a referral from a friend and the food was AMAZING! The meat and cheeseboard had duck meat pastrami and two different cheeses alonf with grilled sourdough, olives, pickles, grapes and fig jam - my granddaughter's favorite! The Bourbon Butternut Bisque was off the hook! Creamy, silky and flavorful! The falafel wrap and cobb salad entrees were ample portions and way more than we could finish. Staff were wonderful, it was just a little noisier than usual, had trouble having a conversation, but the food made it soooo worth it! She wants to come back again for a girl's day out!
I love this gastro pub in Middletown, the food is great, the staff nice, and the space interesting (it is underground bug ut doesn't feel claustrophobic). I would recommend their steak salad, it was really good. The only problem is the noise; if you go on a busy night, you'll have to yell, and I don't love that.
We were in from out of town and stopped by for lunch. They were offering their Oktoberfest menu. The food was really excellent. My German husband was in heaven - everything was topnotch! We loved that they used high quality, fresh ingredients. The owner was a total delight and the wait staff were great. We'll definitely go back the next time we're in town.
This place was packed on a Tuesday night when we were there for dinner. There was a 15-20 mins wait but we were able to find seats at the bar. Service was quick there. It is quite noisy inside so that makes talking a bit challenging unless the person is sitting next to you. The place died down a bit after 8pm. We ordered the flash fried Brussels sprouts, German meatballs, and the smoked haddock cakes. Food was pretty good! They also have a big beer selection.
Leaving an exceptional review as well as a little apology. I’ve always loved the food here. I’m having a very bad week and an even worse day to the point that I’m not even really thinking straight or seeing right. Also, had a lot of food messed up at other restaurants lately and work as a cook myself. So I just walked in with the worst attitude ever. Anyway, I got home, didn’t think the sauce was given with the snitzels we got. And we called to complain and I was a bit rude. But the chef got on the phone and was so nice to my fiance and insisted he gave us the sauce and I was just certain at the time he didn’t. So I drove down to get more sauce and I wasn’t like really mean or anything but I wasn’t friendly and I just wanted to apoligize. The chef here is great and one of the only inspired cooks worthy of the title chef anywhere around. As a cook myself I admire not only his skill and genuine inspired talent, but obvious constant hard work and meticulousness combined with a perfect attitude towards his customers. No one else even tries and it’s always evident in the food and service here. This chef alone honestly gives me hope that there is still the possibility of more good hopping bars with amazing food or even just good restaurants for the future, rather than obvious laziness that most places put out. As someone who had had the worst week in my life and works in food and got accusatory I just feel so bad and I hope you guys see this. I’m just too embarrassed to call now but I’m gonna call in the morning. I feel like such a jerk. Thanks for being one of the only cool places around.
Great people here... and the food is amazing too! They had a special gumbo that was spicy, rich and all the bayou flavors. Chicken cheese steak and the steak/crostini app were 10 out of 10. Bar staff were super friendly... again - great people and great food. We'll be back!
Great craft beers, friendly staff, tasty food. Compared to a typical pub, the menu is a bit unique and upscale (in a good way—the fried chickpeas are great!) but at a reasonable price point. Good decor and atmosphere, too!
We went out to eat a couple of Saturdays ago with our 2 year old son. Both my wife and I were so impressed with the staff and how they engaged with our son. It's really hit or miss going out with a toddler and we both agreed the staff made it an enjoyable experience for us which we so appreciated. The food was exceptional- there was so much attention to detail. We will absolutely be back as we were blown away by the service from all the staff- not just our waiter. Thank you!
Four of us stopped in last night and I’m glad we did. The first thing you notice is the friendliness of the staff. They are fantastic! The service is quick and very attentive. I wish all restaurants were like this. The food was very delicious. Three of us got salads and one got the burger. None of us could finish our meal as the portions are generous. They have a great selection of craft beers as well as Guinness on tap. On top of it all the prices are very reasonable. My only regret is that I don’t live closer so I could go there more often.
If you’re looking for a cozy spot with an inviting atmosphere and top-tier pub fare, Celtic Cavern delivers on every front. From the moment you walk in, the warm, welcoming vibe sets the tone for a great dining experience. We kicked things off with the Bavarian pretzel—perfectly baked, soft inside with just the right amount of salt—and followed it up with their bacon burgers, which were nothing short of classic pub perfection. Juicy, flavorful, and stacked just right, they hit every note you’d hope for. The food is comfort with a twist, and the menu has a strong lineup of satisfying favorites. And if you’re into bourbon, this place has a selection that’s truly impressive—plenty to explore, whether you’re a casual sipper or a connoisseur. Overall, Celtic Cavern is the kind of place you’ll want to come back to. Great food, great drinks, and an atmosphere that makes you want to stay a little longer.
This is widely regarded as one of the best restaurants in the area. I’m from Colchester and had heard from multiple friends and acquaintances about Celtic Cavern. I have tried three previous times to eat here but it was just TOO busy. That is for good reason. Today on my fourth visit I was able to sit at the bar and enjoy a quiet dinner alone. I decided on the sherry butter prime ny strip. I did not make a mistake. The sherry introduces a subtle tart on the front of the tongue that rolls backward into the creaminess of the butter. The finish of the beef was juicy, earthy and presented a smoky char. One of the best steaks I’ve ever had without question. I think J Gilbert’s prime ribeye is my favorite in CT but this is a close second and it was a bit more affordable. If you’re planning a visit be sure to make a reservation if possible or else you would expect to wait. I’d certainly eat here again but during the week at lunchtime or for an early dinner. Cheers!
What a wonderful hidden gem we found! I contemplated not leaving a review because when everyone finds out how great this establishment is, that doesn't already know, I'm afraid I won't be able to find a seat to dine in! The whole entire staff works in unison along with the owner to deliver you the most unbelievable dining experience. We have tried a good number of items on the menu including daily specials, they are all cooked to literal perfection! The menu items that we have tried more than once are prepared and presented exactly the same way each time consistently. Much care and attention to detail is given to provide such a wonderful experience! Prices are reasonable in my opinion you get much more than you pay for! This is our new "go to" place, please save us a seat as we will be anything but "regular" return patrons!
11.26.22 Be ready to wait to be seated as this place is always busy (good sign). The menu is small but has a little of everything. The scallops with pork belly were bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. The soups were thick and hearty. The Mac n cheese felt like it weighed a ton. The burger was moist and juicy, cooked to perfection. And of course, we had an amazing server who was efficient, friendly, and helpful with the menu selections. This is the place to go for a perfect dining experience. Parking lot across the street or street parking available.
We got take out and the food was very flavorful and good! When we went to pick up the food, the people were nice and the place looked very cool, I would definitely go there again to physically eat there. We got 4 dishes and the Brussels sprouts. The fries were nice and looked home made. I got a carnita wrap thing which was very good! The cheese and other vegetables went very well with the pork. And the boneless short rib was cooked amazingly well, along with the polenta being very creamy and tasty. The Brussels sprouts were fun to eat and went with a nice creamy dipping sauce. I would definitely go here again, the food was great! In the photos the food was already eaten a bit, sorry!
Bacon cheeseburger was amazing!!! However most of the fries seemed burnt, and half of them were tiny pieces of fries, like the broken up pieces in the bottom of a bag of frozen fries. 🤷♀️ The very few that weren't burnt were ok but still needed salt. Service was very good.
The atmosphere is great! The servers seemed to pool together and we got great service. Although the food portions were large, each of the three food items we tried left us disappointed for different reasons. When we dine out, we do so for the food so we likely won’t be back.
