What a perfect breakfast stop before a day on the river fishing. We were greeted at the door with a hello and immediately seated at a booth. Food came out quickly. The portions were HUGE and delicious. We didn't need lunch we were so full. Staff was excellent and friendly. What a great start to the day. We will be back!!!
Our service was wonderful, Sarah made sure to answer all of the questions I had and was very helpful when it came to which food contained allergens. She was very quick and when I asked for something she brought it right out! Because of Sarah's caring service and attention to detail, I am able to give this resurant 5 stars. We will definitely be eating here again!
If you enjoy Black Bear Diner you won't want to miss a chance to visit this, their very first, original location here in the town of Mount Shasta. While I expected the premises to flaunt or celebrate this status in some way, I could find only subtle indications. There's a small sign outside and the menu mentions it casually. It's worth coming here, but neither food nor service were the best I've had at Black Bear locations.
The original Black 🐻 diner and original old school service the morning waitress is very attentive she makes sure your coffee doesn't run dry and the French Toast is my favorite, Congratulations on 30 years and hope you get 30 more.
The ORIGINAL - O.G. Black Bear!! This place is a MUST if you are in the area! The food was hot, delicious, and filled us all up! Sage, (hope I spelled her name right) was our server and she freaking rocked!! Thank you for such a great experience! We’ll be back again soon!
Glad our first Black Bear experience was here where it all started. During our 3 days stay at Mt Shasta city, we visited BB twice for breakfast. Kids loved it as well. Omelettes, pancakes, Egg Benedict - all of them were superb. Friendly staff and great ambiance, this is a must visit!!
Hash browns, French toast, and pancakes were good. A lot of food. Coffee is a little bitter, it would be nice to have some flavored creamers.
The food was exellent. I haven't had a better waffle in my life. It was well decorated and clean. The customer service was very good. The staff was polite and they went the extra mile for me. I was sitting next to the window and it was sunny so they went outside and put up a shade for me. An exellent place for a meal with friends and family.
Fantastic service, huge portions & great location; No black bears though ;) - We were greeted by a warm & welcoming staff, was a great touch after a day of driving / hiking. Located close to Mt. Shasta camping or hiking trails, make for a great pit stop either before or after your adventures for the day. Definitely worth stopping by & experiencing the legendary diner! No black bears though (dad joke, ha ha) Highly recommend this place!!
The food was absolutely delicious and it was fresh as well. My waiter , Nancy , was the best. She made sure I had everything I needed and did it quickly and professionally. Highly recommend this place!!
Our server, Noelle is so sweet and warm and friendly. She offered suggestions when requested, andshe was quick and attentive. I've never had a better server. The food was amazing . My husband has the chicken fried steak and hash browns, which was delicious. I had the scrambowl with a sweet cream pancake and it was perfection. This was one of the best eating out experiences that we have had in a long time. And the prices were surprisingly affordable as well. 11/10 recommend
Delicious! Wanted a quick bite during our trip and were told that we had to eat here. We came in and were seated quickly. The staff were friendly and efficient. Our server Mac was amazing. She was very attentive and kind and made sure our glasses were always full. Food was served quickly, portions were huge, food was delicious and prices were great. Overall it was an amazing experience. Will definitely eat here again.
Very nostalgic. With it being the original, I was expecting a run down, older version. I was pleasantly surprised at how retro it felt. Very good atmosphere and the staff was pleasant. The food is awesome. And if you ask for a booth, you're treated to an incredible view of Mt. Shasta.
This is the first and BEST BBD out of all of them. Love this place. Amazing variety and everything is fresh and delicious. I had the chicken fried steak on this trip and gobbled it 😋
Didn't know it was the original location when we stopped in - we had just checked the menu and were looking forward to a tasty breakfast, which we definitely got. Friendly staff (they know and love their locals, which was very good to see). Huge portions for good prices, and the biscuits were enormous. Would definitely stop again.
Well, we got here close to closing, 8:49pm we placed our ordered … and Tessa was our server, and what a delight she is!! She became our best friends, telling us we didn’t look the ages we are! Food was a 4 since the cooks didn’t change out the fryer oil… see pics! But if it wasn’t for Tessa and Tina, it would have been a sad day…. And because BBD is our favorite restaurant… we will obviously be back!! Thanks Bob and Bruce!! And THANK YOU TESSA!!
Great food and service. They were extremely busy and the staff was really great through the rush.
Great service and staff. Very quick and knew the menu. Food was served quickly and delicious
This is the home and beginning to famous black bear diner chain. This place is a great location with the view of Mt.Shasta and must visit. Friendly staff and they have lot of options on the menu with all day breakfast and lunch (yum). I tried the beyond burger with fresh bun and crisp fries!
We finally managed to get the original Black Bear Diner location, that spun off the newer branches in different cities. We visited this place twice, once for dinner and the next morning for breakfast! We were that impressed :) We ordered lots of dishes, pancakes, waffles, vegetarian omelette ( Made with egg and not a vegan option, if you are wondering) Portion sizes are huge and perfect for sharing. Garnishings and presentation of the food was top notch too. Each dish has the calorific value as well. The staff is extremely friendly, and dont hesitate to let me know if you need to customize your order. Good place for a quick pit stop if you are driving on I5, this place is right off the exit.
Great ambience and tasty food. The portion sizes are huge. The sweet potato fries are really great. Located with a great view of Mt.Shasta , this is the original Black Bear Diner. Would definitely recommend to take a stop here if you are in a road trip. We had Veggie omelette, chicken and waffle and eggs and pie.
The food was great. But our waitress Brittany was truly amazing. I watched her navigate really challenging customers under insanely busy conditions. She kept a smile on her face and was professional the entire time. If you’re able to stop here, I hope you get to sit in her section.
Convenient place to eat when traveling along I-5 at Mt. Shasta. Food is always great and exactly as ordered. Friendly employees who are genuine and not just acting that way for a tip like at some other places. Prices are really honestly fair and not too high for the amount of food you get and the quality has always been exceptional. I visit this specific location every time I travel by it which is about 6 times or more each year.
We visited there in a group of 5 and ordered different foods from the menu; so we can share. Good food, big portion size. I ordered sweet cream pancake with eggs and chicken sausages. I loved it the most!! Highly recommended!!! Vegetarian omelettes are also good. Hash browns were a bit over-fried though, but didn’t taste bad. And the view of Mt. Shasta while dining was the best!! The waitress was super friendly and served us really good!!
This cute diner has easy access near I-5 with a very quaint atmosphere, staffed by down to earth folks with whom one can strike up conversation easily. I had a simple bowl of their chili with cornbread muffin and it hit the spot. They also have clean restrooms.
Can you say...Awesome Stuffed Blackberry French Toast be sure and ASK for Whipped Cream 😌 so Goooood. Noel waited on us on Thursday and Brandy, on Friday both were very professional. It a little busy they seem to be short staffed. So if they forget something stay COOL just ask again we did and they got it promptly. Blessings, John
This is the OG Black Bear Diner and they totally keep it all together! Food was exactly as expected and described. Our server, James was excellent, professional, and friendly. I had the 4 piece fried chicken dinner, and took 1/2 to go! My husband had the Reuben sandwich w/extra sauerkraut and onion rings, and said it was delicious and satisfying.
Drove from Seattle to SoCal on my way back from a work trip and I just had to stop at the first Black Bear Diner. It was snow season and it was the perfect pit stop for a hot meal. The service was great as usual. The dining room was somewhat smaller than some of their other locations but warm and welcoming. I had a steak dinner with soup and a cornbread muffin, which was soft and delicious (kinda wish I had ordered some to go). Highly recommend you stop by to enjoy a delicious meal if you find yourself nearby.
Good food, good wine, good service! What else is there to say.!The atmosphere is easy going, the service is outstanding in competence and friendliness. The food is designed to address big hunger after a day hiking, biking or boating. The portions are generous without losing any flavor. If you're looking for a restaurant in Mt. Shasta City I highly recommend the Black Bear Diner.
I absolutely loved my visit to Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta! From the moment I walked in, I could tell this place is special, the way they present the menus and all the little touches around the diner make it feel warm and unique. The food? Simply fantastic. Every bite felt hearty and made with care. It’s the kind of spot where you leave smiling, full, and already planning your next visit. Highly recommend if you want a cozy, fun, and genuinely delicious experience!
Very charming atmosphere, so much memorabilia everywhere to see! I had the Mini Volcano breakfast, which came with 2 sweet cream pancakes🥞, 1 slice of thick cut bacon 🥓, and 1 egg, which I had fried hard. Everything was cooked as ordered, a lot of places don't cook the egg hard as asked, leaving it slightly runny. Food was excellent in taste and appearance. This is the Original Black Bear Diner location, and I was happy to be driving by and able to stop in!!
Food and service was amazing, kids love this place, and I had a little too much coffee… great atmosphere with friends and family.
Went to this location after a long day of hiking and kayaking and finishing all the food we brought with us. We got seated promptly even though it was very busy (highly suggest the bar seats). Large servings and amazing food with nice waiters :)
Fantastic diner with extensive menu featuring classic diner fare. Vibe was friendly, service was prompt. We had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and the tri-tip french dip. Food was delicious and a good value for the money. We arrived a little more than an hour before closing and they were sold out of alot of their homemade desserts so if you want the full variety, make sure you get there earlier! Would definitely recommend and would definitely eat here again.
It was my first time eating here and the place seems very homey and relaxed. The servers were very attentive. Just be very patient while waiting for your orders because it's worth the wait. The cost is affordable and the quality is good. The food is superb! I got the blackened salmon and it is seasoned very well. Will definitely come back here next time and order some desserts too. I know there are several branches available but I heard that this particular branch is one of the most delicious
Had a great lunch. Waitstaff were fairly attendant, though my seat at the bar had put me in a high traffic area, especially for the lunch rush. Took a modest amount of time for food to be made, but it came out piping hot fresh and with a massive portion for the price. Definitely kept me full for a good several hours after.
This is the best restaurant near Mount Shasta, I will definitely be coming back the next time I'm in town. The service was fantastic, all the servers were so kind and were always smiling and answered any questions we had. The food was AMAZING I expected typical diner food but it was more than that, it was GREAT diner food and they had a bunch of different options for different diets and different tastes. The Chicken Fried Steak was the best chicken fried steak I've ever had, crispy, no toughness, easy to cut, no batter taste, seasoned very well, and the country red potatoes come with bell peppers and onions and are seasoned perfectly!! They also have wonderful omelet and gluten free toast, perfect with the jam and butter! And their sweet tea is the perfect pairing for any food you get!! This is the first place where my expectations were blown away!
This is my first time ever eating at Black Bear diner. And I couldn’t have been more excited to dined in the original location. I was greeted with warm, welcoming server was very friendly. The food was bountiful and hot upon arrival. Absolutely delicious not to mention, sitting there and looking at the views of Mount Shasta. Amazing! And the water I can’t recommend enough here load up on tapwater. It’s the cleanest water you’ll ever try in your life! I hope to be back at this location again.
Had to stop at the Original Black Bear Diner, and I'm sure glad I did. Beautiful town and beautiful people. Family oriented town and I plan to return soon. Breakfast was great and Kara provided great service. Penny's is right down the freeway but I recomend waiting for this home style diner! I was one of only two customers eating as soon as they opened it at 6:00 but I was still served my entire meal at the same time in less than 5 minutes after ordering. Kara was extremely friendly and kept coming to check on me and make sure I had everything I needed and if you told me if I need anything just holler at her. I felt like she was treating me like I was her child. I mention many people will have different experiences in the touristy seasonal time for the Mount Shasta volcano area but if you really want a hometown humbled experience go when nobody else does that way you can really get an idea for their food quality and their service when nobody's looking because nobody's visiting in the winter. Also, this is the original Black Bear Diner established in 1995 and currently with over 60 locations in 11 states. This is a wonderful place, and it's nice to have something decades old, original and any little tiny town of a population of less than 3,200. Please give this place a try and you'll be happy you're dead! 🙏🏻🙏🏻♥️♥️
All there food is amazing from there Friday all you can eat catfish to there amazing breakfast. Fast friendly staff who work great as a team!!

Ordered an omelet with shreds of potatoes. They potatoes weren't cooked; except the outside edges. They were very much soft raw potatoes. Felt like the server was rushing us out. Gave us our bill, without asking if we would like other items. Which we had planned on ordering to go.
The meal was good with the exception of a fly in my drink, in fact flies everywhere in the restaurant. I didn't make a fuse there were flies at the previous restaurant around the corner ( some bistro place). Must be a Shasta thing, in my drink however not acceptable. Don't order the Arnold Palmer, not worth it.
One of the nicest places around Mt. Shasta. Prices we’re descent but the service is what makes this spot great. The meals came out fairly quickly but our last dish came out late. Our server did end up getting one of our meals for free due to kitchen mishaps. Overall, pretty darn tasty 👌🏼
The grilled sourdough burger that I ordered sat on the grill too long. The sourdough bread was darn near Black by the time I got it plus it took forever to get my food. But the taste was good.
Food and service was great, I was impressed with how fast the food came out and it was delicious. Sadly they were out of half of what we wanted but it was the end of the night so understandable. But the food was great fast and nice service.
Located in the central section of the town of Mount Shasta. Good amount of parking in the back. Was seated and left for quite a long while before the waitress took our order. Food was worth the wait! Awesome! Even though it was not crowded we again had to wait and even ask to receive our check. Poor service kept me from giving a five star rating.
I did not know what to expect and was surprised when I stepped inside. The 60s or 70s kind of music was playing and the welcoming atmosphere was just like a diner I have seen in the old movies. Growing up in Asia, I had some kind of roadside diner fantasy and this place was just like that. Lots of daddy bears(human, not real bears) were easily spotted and the staff were so down to earth. Best parts were, of course, the food quality and portion as well as the comfortable atmosphere that made me feel like that I was experiencing 'the real America' as how it was supposed to be.
Perfect place for a happy breakfast. They have started indoor dining. The ambiance is very vibrant and cheerful. The breakfast was very good. Mostly filled with passing by tourists. My only complaint with them is, their drinking hot water was not clean. Changed 3 cups, it either had lint swimming in it or the cups were not cleaned well.
This is the original Black Bear diner?! That’s awesome. You can definitely tell, the food is really good and big portions. I had the Tri-tip dip with mushrooms and onions, it was so tasty. My family had the pumpkin pancakes, bacon cheeseburger, and Ham dinner cub size. Everyone was very pleased, we had great service. My only small complaint is the limited bathrooms with long lines and the obvious poor condition of the building. The popcorn ceiling was falling down in spots near our table. But don’t let that keep you from going. We will likely make this place a tradition every time we drive over this pass. Be sure you try the Mama, Papa, and Baby Burn sauces! So good.
This is the original black bear diner and it’s pretty fun! Really great decor and vibes, and the service was great. The food is decent, but worth the price! Very cheap and big portions, but not the best food, just decent. I think if you’re up here camping though or just driving through it’s worth it to stop in. It’s really neat. I will say the new cold brew was really good!! We will likely return if we go camping up here again just because it is a cute little experience. Oh also the bathroom was kinda icky.
This restaurant with a nice ambience is the original Black Bear Diner. We had fish fry, chilly, avacado egg toast sandwich, and a sourdough cheeseburger along with wheat beer. The items were decent in taste and presentation. The choice was limited as a few items on the menu such as meat loaf, corned sandwich etc was not available hence one star less. Free parking area and clean toilets add to the convenience
It’s a privilege to visit the original Black Bear Diner in Mount Shasta. This is my husband’s most favourite restaurant and his must-visit in Mt Shasta! It’s fascinating to read the owners’s story on the paper. I like the menu printed in a newspaper style-it’s very old fashioned and adorable. Reading the phrases curved into the bar stools is fun. There’s a tiny store selling the Black Bear souvenirs inside the restaurant. This restaurant is definitely a favourite among locals and visitors.
We were looking for a quick dinner before sleeping in early while we were in Shasta and found out the original Black bear was close by. It unfortunately didn't turn out to be quick as getting a table and later the food took a long time. The food though was pretty good for us. We had a Bigfoot Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs with a Huckleberry Lemonade and a Crispy Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap. The Fried Steak and the gravy were great and the biscuits were also fresh. The wrap was pretty good as well, and the fries were fresh and crispy. The place itself needs a little cleanup, it's noticeably dusty with cobwebs and the furniture is a bit worn out. The food took a long time as the kitchen was overworked, but the staff were doing what they could. So if you're not in a hurry and don't mind waiting, the food is worth a try.

The food and service was excellent, but the bathrooms were disgusting. I stopped in on a Tuesday on my way to Medford and was delighted with the food and service. Before leaving I used the restroom and found it filthy. Assuming it was just a bad day, I stopped back in two days later for breakfast on my return trip. Once again, the food and service was excellent, but both restrooms were so dirty I couldn't bring myself to use either one.
Cute atmosphere and nice to know that we were at the original location of such a large chain restaurant. However I was unaware of their oversized portions and I'm a small woman. The taco salad that I ordered was practically the same size as my whole torso... although I'm not really sure that is necessary it was $12 and I'll have enough leftovers for about 4 meals so that's pretty cool. Also I'm a vegetarian and almost every item on the menu had meat in it and I wish there were some more meatless options.
I was really looking forward to eating at the original Black Bear Diner while on an RV trip with my father. Unfortunately his Biscuits and Gravy was cold and my scrambled eggs with my ham steak was cold. Asked the server to toss each in the microwave to reheat. What is it with cold food being served?!? The restaurant wasn't busy and they had ample servers. I love Black Bear Diner's food and atmosphere, but I don't like cold food...
The food was okay. Restaurant could use a good cleaning. The carpet edges are full of crumbs and dust. bathroom sink is coated with soap scum. For the original unit it should e the shining example …

came into the diner recently with my family i could tell the place was packed we ordered dinner the host was very nice she had gotten are drinks right away and greeted us kindly. but when it came to order a male server i believe he’s same was joey or jenny he was extremely aggressive and loud the entire time i was confused about a menu item and hes voice became more and more load . He had made eye contact with a coworker and i got the vibe she was telling him to tone it down. food was cold but at this point i did not feel comfortable complaining because this server was very rude and made us very uncomfortable we just ate and got out of there . We will return hopefully next time we will have a better experience.
Both the food and service were mediocre. My over easy eggs were almost fried all the way through, the ham steak was decent, and the biscuits were hard and bland. Point of contention, I ordered a cup of coffee, and it says it's a bottomless coffee for $3.99. I was there by myself and had 1 cup of coffee and two refills, I was charged for three cups of coffee. I pointed that out to the waitress and she said she'd get the manager to fix it, after 15 minutes that never happened so I just paid and left. Won't bother going back to any of their locations.
Our recent visit to Black Bear Diner was the worst experience we’ve had at a your chain of restaurants. Despite being excited to visit the first-ever BBD location, the reality was disappointing. We ordered hot tea, but it arrived cold, even in the kettle. We waited 40 minutes for our omelet and eggs with hash browns, only for the food to arrive barely warm. We understand the restaurant was busy, but the long wait and lukewarm food were unacceptable. To make matters worse, my plate had a salad with wilted lettuce and a piece of orange that looked like it had already been eaten. My boyfriend found a piece of plastic on his bacon, which was shocking. As the original location, this restaurant needs to significantly improve its food quality and service. This was, without a doubt, our worst dining experience.
Service was not great, food was below average and the food served was on the cold side. Pass

One of the worst dining experiences I have had in last 10 years… I understand stuff happens but twice in the same meal one of are party of fours meal was not made… put in request when mistake was found and no food came and then forgot it again … we then we were done eating an no dinner yet came they offered us to box it up so we could take and fry’s where still being cooked and not present on the plate… nobody explained what happened the waitress was apologetic and anxiously it was not her mistake… cook in kitchen was loud and speaking about their mistake with our order and was mad at us when we said no we don’t want it and we are not paying for it… it sat in counter as we settled are bill and left … last words place need a cleaning years of grime build up , wound not make it threw health department check for sure… windows were spotless and that’s all that was clean…
We ended up coming here for the first time because there were no restaurants open after 8 p.m., and this place had the best ratings among the few options available. We ordered a kids’ menu and a children’s drink for our 7-year-old, along with a salad and a small tri-tip, plus two additional sides. The food was average. The ice cream that was supposed to be included with the kids’ meal never came, so we had to ask for it again. On the bill, the children’s drink was charged as a regular drink, and there was an unexpected $5 charge for the sides. Even though my child specifically pointed to the kids’ drink on the menu, they admitted it was their mistake but still charged the full price. They also added extra charges at the end without explaining the price beforehand, even though we ordered a small meal. Overall, it was an unpleasant dining experience, and we don’t plan to return. This left a negative impression of the entire brand.
