Avis sur Szechuan Gourmet New York
Food was amazing, great service and you must get the fried intestines with string beans with chili peppers if you’re adventurous. Otherwise their double cooked pork and mapo tofu is on point without being overly greasy. Everything was a hit and our waitress Shadow was amazing with the recommendations. I’ve had their lunch special when I use to work in the neighborhood years ago. Super authentic Szechuan food in midtown NY. I came here back to back nights 😅
The food is always great and the service is unmatched - tucked away from the busy midtown west - this spot is great for the whole family.
For a girl they grew up in the province of Szechuan, this is the best Szechuan restaurant in Manhattan, also known for its friendly wait staff and amazing service. I always enjoyed eating here whether it’s a business lunch, quick catch-up with friends who who nearby in Midtown, or dinner with family.
Agree with others... simple place that’s super tasty. It is not a healthy option by any stretch, but a nice treat. I had the dumplings to start which were pretty sweet, but divine and nice blend of sweet and spicy Went simple with General Tso which can be as spicy or not as you want depending on how many peppers you take in each bite. Will come back.
We had the pork soup dumplings, crispy chicken, spring rolls, and spicy beef brisket noodle soup. Everything was delicious!
The food was delicious and the portions were generous. The staff were friendly and attentive. Overall, a very pleasant dining experience—I’ll definitely come back!
I have been here twice because I love sichuan food and explored almost every sichuan restaurant near to my office and my house. Good price, and good location.
I had an amazing experience, I saw few of the reviews here and I do not agree with them! The price is fair for the quality! The proportion is big enough! The place is extremely clean and everybody that works here is nice and happy. I’m coming back for sure 😋
Went there twice recently. Will def go back again and again. Forgot to leave a review at the first place. A bit surprised why there’s one star review. After read them figure out that if you’re not a spicy Chinese food fan, then try other restaurants. If you do love spicy food, especially original Szechuan food, go there!
An excellent high end Szechuan place near Bryant park. Century eggs a good starter, treated so there is minimal ammonia smell. Tea duck and cumin lamb very authentic and well plated. Eggplant roasted so tender with delicate knife work like ratatouille. Only issue is they recently decided to present the blood and tripe stew bowl in a rectangular wooden stand, which is fine by itself. However whomever made the choice to place the lid at an angle in a cutout on the stand... it now resembles a toilet. You are serving blood and tripe stew out of a toilet bowl.
Szechuan Gourmet never disappoints! The flavors are truly authentic—every bite bursts with that signature numbing spice, yet balanced enough to savor every dish. The service was attentive and friendly, and the ambiance strikes a perfect blend of modern comfort and traditional charm. A must-try for anyone seeking the real taste of Sichuan in NYC.
Came in on a weekday lunch, really enjoyed their lunch special! Great food, great service! Will definitely come back!
Amazing and authentic Schezuan style food. Lots of really spicy dishes, including some authentic ones like in China. A must try restaurant. I have been coming here for decades. They were shutdown for a few years and have been reopened the last 3 years. You can’t go wrong with any item - always freshly prepared, good quality ingredients and flavorful dishes. Fish in hot sauce, Kung Pao, Wonton soup and Mala tofu were superb.
From Australia, we have been here twice in the past 24hrs. Delicious, fresh food and really nice staff. Beef with mushroom was my favourite. Thank you.
The food at Szechuan Gourmet is absolutely amazing! Every dish is full of bold, authentic flavors — spicy, fragrant, and perfectly balanced. The ingredients taste fresh, and the service is friendly and fast. Highly recommend their mapo tofu and spicy fish — definitely one of the best Szechuan restaurants around!
We stayed at the Grayson and this place is literally across the street. Walked in and got very excited when I saw the rest of the clientele. We had soup and two dishes. We would have had more but the day was a huge eating day. The tomatoe egg soup was phenomenal. Tasted just as good as our szechuan place at home. The double cooked pork with pancakes was super cool. Never had something like it before. Quite spicy in that perfect szechuan tongue numbing way. The Mrs got a delicious tofu dish (bean curd) with chives. Nice and light and phenomenal with my spicy dish. Their hot oil is delicious and just the right amount of spice. We'd definitely go back. Oh and if you like quick service this place is for you. My water cup was filled almost literally before I put it down. Four times during our meal. My son would love this as he's a big hydration machine.
Szechuan is all about flavor and this restaurant did not disappoint. Huge portions and really gooood food and service for a reasonable price in midtown Manhattan. One piece of advice, maybe bring it down a notch with the oil.
This place is gorgeous and the food is sooo so good. I went here for dinner with my friend and we ended up trying a bunch of dishes. Her family is from Szechuan province and she loved the food -that’s how you know it’s the real deal. The Dan Dan noodles with spicy minced pork were a must for us. I personally loved the fried rice, and my friend really loved the mapo tofu and duck. I can’t wait to go back to try some other dishes too! Service was really nice and helpful as well.
Some of the best Szechuan in the city. (No, I don't get American Chinese food at specialty places like this.) After 4 years, I was happy to learn this restaurant has returned (and looks like it has been for some time now.) I got food to go, but the interior looked really mid-to-high end. I went ahead and got a few things to compare them to other Szechuan places in the city: -Spicy Cucumber Salad - $12.95 -Smoky Wok Tossed Spicy Asian Green Chili - $16.95 -Deep Fried Fish and Potato Peanuts - $24.95 -Stir Fried Chicken w Spicy Roasted Chili (basically three-pepper chicken) - $21.95 Even eating the food 20 minutes later, its some of the best in the city. Everything was great. The highlight was the Deep Fried Fish and Potato/Peanuts dish was something I had never had before and it was my favorite. The three-pepper chicken was good too, even with the skin left on the chicken. Definitely will be back when by Bryant Park.
Szechuan Gourmet is definitely one of the best Szechuan restaurants in Manhattan. It’s recommended by Bib Gourmand for years and we finally gave it a visit last weekend. We had their Mapo Tofu, Braised Fish Fillet w Roasted Chili, Sautéed String Beans and Braised Beef Flank Pot. Their portion was decent with a little high price but the taste was outstandingly delicious. The Mapo Tofu was one of my favorites. It was extremely soft and flavorful with mild spicy. Their Braised Fish Fillet w/ Roasted Chili was surprisingly tasty and flavorful. The texture of the fish was delicate with appetizing sauce.
Went to Szechuan Gourmet today, food was authentic and flavorful, especially the chili-oil dishes. The spice level feels real Sichuan, not American-style mild. Portion sizes are solid for Midtown. Service was a bit rushed, but overall a great spot if you’re craving true Sichuan heat. Would come back.
I made plans to hang out with a friend today and have an early dinner here at Szechuan Gourmet. Unfortunately, my friend canceled at the last minute, but I decided to go anyway since I already had reservations set. Thank goodness I went, or I would have missed out on this amazing restaurant. The décor is sort of modern Chinese with cool looking recessed lighting, plushy booths, and wood accents. I loved the whole floor plan and the way the tables were set up. There are a couple of nooks and semi-private tables and an area in the back for larger parties. It’s just on overall lovely looking restaurant. The menu is quite robust, and it took me a good 5 minutes of reading to finally decide on what to order. I got an order of pork soup dumplings, the shredded pork with sweet miso sauce and the crispy chicken with citrus lemon sauce. It was quite a lot of food for one person! Let’s start with the soup dumplings. They came to the table steaming hot (as it should be). The skin was thin, and the broth was very tasty. It was so good, and I devoured the whole order! The shredded pork dish came with shredded carrots, cucumbers, scallions, and several pieces of crepes so that you can make your own pork sandwiches. Anyone who likes eating with their hands would love this. The crispy chicken was another outstanding dish. The chicken was crunchy from the breading and the sauce was a nice blend of tangy and sweet. By now as you can imagine I was quite full. I had not planned on getting dessert, but the waiter talked me into getting their pumpkin cakes. Thank you, mister waiter, (who I did not get their name) for being so attentive and for recommending this dessert. The pumpkin cakes were made of glutinous rice and stuffed with pumpkin and red bean paste. It was crispy and crunchy on the outside and soft and sticky on the inside. Absolutely yummy. I would come back just for this. If you are in the Bryant Park neighborhood and looking for a serene spot with great food, then come here.
This is definitely one of the best authentic Szechuan restaurant in Manhattan! The portion is so generous and the price is quite reasonable especially thinking of the location. Most importantly, the flavor is so good! You can literally try any dish in the menu, you will not be disappointed.
The experience here means I'll definitely return. This place tops my local destinations list. The staff members are friendlier to some but never disappoint with delivery. My relatives all give this restaurant positive reviews. I was satisfied completely by my visit.
One of the best hidden gems of NYC. If you consider having SEVEN Michelin Reccomendations on your menu "secret." This place has the BEST soup dumplings I've ever had. The restaurant itself is clean and we'll decorated in a mix of modern and traditional themes. The staff are friendly, quick, and attentive. Prices are very reasonable. The menu offers numerous authentic, mouth-watering choices, including numerous dishes with Michelin Reccomendations, and rightly so. This trip I started with Soup Dumplings then moved on to the Moo Shu Pork. This single plate was easily enough food for two people. It was so good I was genuinely disappointed that I was too full to finish it. Having stumbled on this place by accident, it instantly became one of my favorite restaurants in midtown!
We really enjoyed this Chinese restaurant. We were 7 and they accommodated us without any problems. Food was delicious. Service very good as well. A very complete menu, with lots of different plates to choose from. If you are not a fan of spicy food, just make sure you order mild, since Szechuan food is known for its spiciness.
I ordered the Abalone and Pork Belly Plate. The sauce for this dish was excellent and goes super well with some rice. The Pork Belly was so soft and welcoming with its warmth. I'll say the Abalone was alright definetly the least interesting part of the dish. I saw some really tasty dishes across from me and I'll definetly have to come here again to try them.
Good food, wide menu options, quantity modest, prices slightly higher, not very spicy
We have traveled through 30 countries and we love to eat at different restaurants and we love Chinese cuisine! This Chinese restaurant has a Michelan indication and we love it! We ordered the orange chicken and the fried chicken Rice, which came with delicious soup. It is certainly our new favorite Chinese restaurant in New York!
This was the cutest, and coziest Chinese food place I’ve ever been. The fried rice was the best I’ve have ever had, and the king pao and general tso’s were also very tasty. If you’re looking for authentic and delicious food this is definitely the spot. Prices were reasonable, the service was very friendly and accommodating to preference
Amazing Asian Cuisine! By far some of the best Chinese food I have ever enjoyed. The duck was fabulous - crispy and moist. The orange chicken was by far the best I have ever had. It was not sweet, perfectly seasoned with veggies intricately sliced. The Chow Fun noodles were smoky and beef was tender and moist. The service was impressive. Overall, an excellent dining experience. Everyone walked away satisfied and happy!
This place serves authentic Szechuan flavors, with plenty of heat and peanuts. Their portions of noodle bowls are generous, as showcased in their spicy beef noodles bowl. It is understandably oily, with the chili, but the noodles are springy and the beef is decently toothsome. The prices are also reasonable in this area of Manhattan. Other authentic items on their menu include Dan Dan mian and fish dishes. The location itself has a cozy interior with largely wooden aesthetic. The servers sometimes felt a bit inattentive, but there are enough of them that someone will attend to you. It's a good spot on a street that has multiple szechuan restaurants, and I recommend trying it to compare.
Came here mostly for their La Ma Ti Hua (老妈蹄花 pig trotter soup). This dish is unbeatable across Manhattan. The rest is decent as well, but not particularly impressive. Pretty solid traditional Szechuan cuisine, could be a bit spicier in my opinion, probably toned down to accommodate the general audience. The fish and duck dishes are also great choices and I highly recommend anyone who hasn’t tried it give it a try here - they’re tender and flavorful, not too spicy and not too many bones. Worth giving it a shot
We came for the braised pork with abalone, and it did not disappoint. The pork was fresh, tender, and perfectly balanced with just the right hint of sweetness. The abalone was delightfully tender and free of any fishy taste. The braised scallop was an unexpected highlight — paired with bamboo shoots and broccoli, it created a refreshing and flavorful combination. Even the watermelon at the end was pleasantly natural-tasting, not overly sweet. Overall, a wonderful experience, and we’d gladly come back again!
This is my no. 1 go to restaurant in midtown. I come often not only it closes to my office, and such friendly service, delicious food with affordable price in mid town is rare! I love to try new restaurants but I always come back to this one! They made me feel welcome all the times! Today, we ordered dry pot beef with griddle cook chili and cumin, braised fish fillet with cabbage and chili, Ming bean jelly salad, wok-tossed crispy lamb with chili cumin. These dishes have different spices and flavors, and perfectly combined together. I also recommend the water melon juice and the dessert. Again, they gave good impression to my friends from Taiwan and a Spanish guy new to Chinese cuisine. (Their food never disappointed me in a single time I went. I wish this restaurant will continuously doing great in the bad economic.)
The food was really good but the atmosphere was a bit hectic otherwise the service was good and food was excellent.
Came in in a rainy afternoon shared a few dishes all were very good. Every dish was well done even if it wasn't really my taste, my personal favorites were the cumin lamb and the pork trotters. Wasn't expecting much but left with a full stomach and good memories. Overall would come back.
I like the food and the lighting in the restaurant. Some dish are a little salty for my taste but still bearable. Also the place is never too crowded so it is nice if you want a quiet time without too much of noise pollution. Service is ok. They can talk nicer to the customers. Price is quite fair for the food quality. Also, there are many other Chinese restaurants around so you can take your pick but this one is worth visiting when you are in town, I think.
Szechuan Gourmet on 39th street has such a nice ambiance, it was a surprise! It is a casual fancy Chinese decor, which I much appreciated. The menus is extensive, and there the more basic Chinese dishes all the way to more adventurous ones. I started off with the fried eggplant, which I didn’t care for that much in terms of flavor, but got my appetite going. The star of the meal was the mapo tofu, my main course. The flavors are very rich, and the tofu was heavenly creamy. It is a very strong meal, and it made me a little queasy, but I recognize that is due to me not being accustomed to the szechuan sauce, so if you are sensitive (which I’m usually not), try something less rich in flavors. But if you are not, please get it. The other guest at the table got a fried chicken with chilies, and I ate some too, and it was perfect, in seasoning, in crunchiness. Very good! For dessert, we got pumpkin cakes, which were good, but not really necessary after the excellent main courses. I am looking forward to come back and try out more things!
I got the spicy beef noodle soup and the dumplings in chili oil. I thought the soup was decent. I would have preferred it spicer and there wasn't a ton of beef in it. The broth wasn't super rich, but still had decent flavors. One of my favorite things about the soup were the pickled(?) bamboo shoots. It was actually probably my favorite thing in the soup! The dumplings were really good! The chili oil was another star of the meal and I ended up added some into my soup for more spice and flavor.
Szechuan Gourmet is a long-standing Sichuan restaurant, and its decor and atmosphere reflect its storied history. Initially, I was concerned it might lean towards Americanized “Sichuan” cuisine, but after tasting the food, I was pleasantly surprised by its authenticity. The presentation of each dish is thoughtful, showing the restaurant’s effort to stay visually appealing and up-to-date. The cold appetizer, Garden Diced Chicken in Spicy Sauce, features tender chicken immersed in rich red oil that enhances the flavor without being overly spicy. However, the chicken itself was a bit loose in texture and could have been firmer. The Beef with Silky Tofu is a bold, spicy hot dish, perfect for pairing with rice. Although the flavors are spot on, the beef itself was rather ordinary. The Trotter Soup, unfortunately, didn’t impress me. The broth lacked depth and authenticity, missing the herbal notes typically associated with traditional Sichuan soups, and the dipping sauce was just basic doubanjiang, adding little to the experience. The biggest highlight was the Roasted Chili Spiced Broth (Mao Xue Wang). This dish stood out due to its impressive variety of ingredients—fish, pork intestine, luncheon meat, beef tripe, and vegetables—all served in a beautifully designed vessel. The sheer diversity of ingredients makes it one of the most abundant versions of Mao Xue Wang I’ve had, and I highly recommend it. Overall, while Szechuan Gourmet has some areas for improvement—such as a more coordinated serving order and slightly higher-quality meats—the flavors are genuine. For a restaurant with such a long history, it’s commendable that they’ve maintained a level of authenticity in their Sichuan dishes. A satisfying experience overall.
Ordered the mapo tofu with egg drop soup and the General Tso’s chicken with wonton soup. Portions were on the smaller side, and the mapo tofu was a bit heavy on the chili paste, but the rice and egg drop soup were spot on. The service really stood out: the waiters were excellent and very kind. Overall, a pleasant experience 😊
Take out review: We have been looking forward to try food from Szechuan Gourmet for a while. For got a chance today, and we headed to the restaurant around 12:30 pm to order lunch for pick up. Seeing many people waiting at the door, I asked the person taking order about the wait time, to which he said it’s 20 minutes. 5 minutes after putting my order, I heard another customer saying, she had been waiting for 45 minutes. At that point, I sort of knew where this was heading. From that point on, every time I asked the person about my order, he kept saying that it was almost ready. Long behold, after waiting for an hour, me and two of my co-worker finally got the food. The food itself was pretty good. We loved the pancake, braised fish, and kun pao chicken. But we were still pretty upset about how our order was handled. If we knew, it would be an hour to get the food, we would have just walked back to our office, and come back an hour later, since it’s only a 5 minutes walk for us. During our waiting at the restaurant, we saw a dine-in customer literally walk out, because he couldn’t wait any longer to get food in his table. Another group of people were also pretty mad about not getting any food at their table as well. I hope this review helps the business to improve on their services, especially during the crunch hours of lunch time. If I try this place again in future, I’ll post an updated review.
Service really matters in a restaurant, and unfortunately this experience was disappointing. When the food was served, no napkins or plates were provided. These are very basic things, and having to ask for them takes away from the dining experience. Even more frustrating, our dishes were cleared before we had actually finished eating. Good service is not just about bringing food to the table — it’s about attention, timing, and respect for the customer. Tips are usually a reflection of the overall experience, and details like these do make a difference. I hope the management can pay more attention to service standards in the future.
I used to come here very often with colleagues and friends. That was before covid. The new decoration was nice but it lost all its original charm. While I totally support an establish w/ over 20 years history upgrading with deco and pricing, the food quality is not matching the change. The portion of food is much smaller that how it used to be. What really gave me bad taste was the fact it charges $2 for a small bow of white rice. That just feels wrong. How can you serve Sichuan food and charge additional for white rice. I am actually really curious if they charge white rice for takeout. Anyway, the food still tastes good. my double cooked pork was more like dry sautéed pork but still flavorful. The mapo tofu is favorable but lack of the traditional minced pork. The sauce felt premade. The good news is that there are so many new Sichuan restaurants everywhere across New York from lower Manhattan, to Brooklyn, LIC, and of course queens. Unless you work in midtown and want to grab quick lunch, there is honestly no reason to come for a visit because what you pay and what you get just don't match. And, you have to pay additional $2 for each small tiny bowl of rice, yuk!
